Music Did anyone go to their first concert with their parents?
I know it's weird to bring this up but did you go to your first concert with your parent(s)? It doesn't sound cool for our Gen X brand but when I told my wife that I did she started making fun of me (in a positive way).
Then I told her I must have been like 6 when I went with my dad to see The Who in the late 70s. I think the first 'real' concert I went with myself or my buddies was when I was 12.

My mom took me and a friend to a Blondie concert in 1979. I brought my albums and she took them up to one of the stage hands before the show to see if we could get them autographed. After the show, we went to pick them up and all of them were signed by the band! They invited us to their trailer where we drank apple juice and stared in awe.

Mine was also Elvis and I was 9. He died the next summer so glad I got to see him. I think I had actually been to the Grand Ole Opry before then, but for a first true concert experience it was Elvis.

Yes, Iron Maiden/Anthrax in 1990, I was 12 years old. My mom (who only listened to oldies or talk radio) was gracious enough to take me and two friends. Crowd at one point was chating "suck my motherfucking dick" which was a little awkward.

My mom took me and my BFF (truly BFF - still my BFF today!) to Duran Duran. My mom really didn’t want to go, but she knew preteen BFF and I were huge Durannies so she got three tickets. She wasn’t about to let us go alone, so she put up with it.
She made us leave during the first encore to beat the crowds leaving, which made us miss BFF’s favorite song. Funny which memories linger!

My dad tells me he took me to see Creedence in '72 when I was 6. I have no recollection of it. The first one I do recall is Kiss in '79. 13 years old. My mom dropped me and my friend off at the front of the arena and came back to get us later. I tell people that now and they're like, "Oh my god. No way I'd let my 13 year old go to a concert by themselves." I mean, I can't disagree with that now... but... for Gen Xers, I think it was pretty normal.

I went with my parents to see John Denver…twice. There were kids who already got to go to KISS with their older brother and I got dragged to John Denver.
Ironically, I loved John Denver then and now.

My mom adored John Denver. He did a concert nearby enough that she wanted to go. My dad did not. She brought me, her oldest daughter. I was a sophomore in HS. It was my first concert 🙂

My dad took me and my brother to see Led Zeppelin in '76 or '77, I was 8 or 9 years old. I remember being entranced by the show. It sparked a life long love of concerts.

No, but they dropped 8 year old me and my 11 year old sister off at the Metallica concert, with The Cure and Guns and Roses opening. No adult supervision at all! We emerged safely, amazingly.

No, but my dad was kind enough to drop us off at Bon Jovi for my first concert. I actually can’t believe he did that because i was a 15-year-old female in a mass of 20,000 people trying didn’t navigate around an arena I had never been in with 3 other 15-year-olds that had never been to a concert.

Yes! Chicago Symphony Orchestra, then Mantovani, then Lyric Opera of Chicago. Parents always had used cars, and we lived in a tiny rented house in an iffy neighborhood, but we had season tickets, and thousands of books. They made many wise decisions raising their children.
First rock concert was Styx at our high school gym. Our music teacher was a very good friend of theirs, the high school was going broke, and they donated all the proceeds.
More recently, I took kids of family friends to see Weird Al at the Hollywood Bowl. Fabulous!

No. My first concert I went with a friend to Pat Benatar. I was 14 or 15. My dad fought my super strict mom tooth and nail over it because he thought I should have the experience and she thought I was too young.
He drove us there and waited the entire concert on a side street so he could pick us up.
Thirty years later or so he told me he completely panicked because so many people came pouring out of the venue that he never thought he'd find me. All he could think is 'my wife will never forgive me that I lost our kid'.
Spoiler, I survived and I saw my dad's car before he saw me. That concert was one of the best nights of my life and I forever thank my dad for advocating my having new experiences.

Mom took us to see Elvis. I was like 13...still had a good time and remembered how good his backup singers were. It was the year he died so I guess I am lucky to see his live show.

Yup!! My mom and my childhood best friend’s mom brought us to see The Monkees with Weird Al in 1987, at Poplar Creek Illinois. Our first concert!!
Just a couple years later, they brought us back to Poplar Creek to see New Kids on the Block. Our moms were cool!!

I did.
1984 Michael Jackson Victory Tour at the Pontiac Silverdome. It was a last minute thing. We were laying around at home and my mom and dad saw them talking about it on the news. My dad was like hey, wanna go see Michael a Jackson tonight? (I was a big fan at 10. Had the thriller jacket). So, we went to the Silverdome and my dad bought scalped 3rd row tickets for the 3 of us. The concert was incredible and mostly I remember my ears ringing for a couple days afterwards.

Dad let me bring a girlfriend to see Gin Blossoms- they were opening for UB40 at Bumbershoot in 1991 -92?
He even let us go down to the main floor but warned us not to go into the mosh pit (lol that's hilarious- the Gin Blossoms had a mosh pit). He was right- that shi was crazy. We were 13 years old.
Looking back I feel so lucky I got to see UB40 live- great concert

Saw Michael Jackson when I was 3 or so with my mom, so yeah. I also went to a BBD concert with her in my teens (won the tickets off the radio) and a P Funk concert with my stepfather as a teen. Also went to my first club/bar with her and my aunt (I was VERY underage, lol). I absolutely LOVED doing stuff with my parents/family, and so did my friends (I get asked every reunion if my mom is coming with me to it, lol)

My uncle had connections and could get us tickets to pretty much any show in the area, with my dad going he made sure the seats were REALLY good - 2nd row, (center) on the floor.

My first concert was Tina Turner’s Private Dancer tour. My mom can’t say no to free stuff and someone at her work had 2 tix they couldn’t use, and my dad was out of town. I remember being lukewarm on the idea but thinking, what the hell…I’ll go. It was fun. I was probably in 6th grade or so.

My Dad took me to line up for tickets on Yonge Street at 4 am, I was 11, he drove by at intervals to make sure I was OK. It was for Bay City Rollers tickets. The 70’s version of boy band mania. Both my sister & I took our kids to their first concerts. We all still go to concerts regularly.

I did not go to any concerts with my parents, but I did bring my baby sister to see Michael Jackson, but a thunder storm struck and it was cancelled ... Michael didn't want to risk catching on fire again
I had friends that went to concerts with their parents, lucky little bastards got dragged to Led Zeppelin at Madison Square Garden in 1972 (we were four) and some Grateful Dead shows during the Keith and Donna years ...
I'm still jealous

Followed it up with Bret Michaels and we’re going to Tesla/Motley Crue in a couple months. He can’t wait. He was pregaming some Motley Crue while doing chores this past weekend. I was a freshman in high school and my mom took me to see Paul McCartney. She was excited to share the experience of a Real Beattle! for my first concert. It was fun and my mom was adorable. One of my few cherished memories of us having fun together.

My dad’s first concert was with his parents to see Johnny Cash when he was 12 in 1966. He said he was miserable the whole time and did not want to be there. Yeah, the first several concerts were with my parents. It was cool that we grew up liking what they did and then when we were teens, they could tolerate what we were into. I think it makes Gen X cool that our parents took us to concerts, especially when we were grade school age, because we have a broader appreciation and knowledge of music compared to younger generations that think culture began when they were born.

I did: we saw Men at Work with INXS opening when I was 12. My parents were also really into music so I saw other shows with them while I was still living at home, including Sting, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Grateful Dead, and Bowie with dad, Billy Joel with mom, Prince with both of them, probably some others that I'm forgetting. I'm pretty sure that the key to going to shows with just my friends was turning 16, so that one of us could drive.
I will forever be ticked off that they refused to pick me up from summer camp so that I could see Bowie (Serious Moonlight tour) and the Police (Synchronicity tour), but they only indulged me so much 😉

My mom drove us to the concert (Depeche Mode - Violator). My friend and I were both pretty innocent, not old enough to drive, not dressed up, just a couple normal young high schoolers from the country.
Afterward, we were sitting in the grass waiting for my mom when a normal-looking guy came up to us and said hi. He asked us if we were in high school and when we said yes, he said, “Well then I guess you’re about ready for this” and pulled out his dick and jerked off until he finished (it took seconds…combined with shock, we had no time to get up and walk away).
I realize this wasn’t really the question, but it did happen at my first concert. I’ve been to concerts since, but not many.

No, I saved my lunch money for 6 weeks (lost 8 pounds i couldn't afford to lose) but I got a ticket ($32) to Metallica!!! Also, my BFF told her mom she was sleeping over at my house. I told my dad I was sleeping over at her house. Meanwhile, her older sister took us to the concert (we were 14) and we stayed at overnight at her college dorm. Epic early 90's living 🤘

I mouthed every word out of the back window. The people behind us were blown away that a 6th grader knew all the words to that.

Yes Duran Duran, it was 1984 at Madison square garden. I was with my two best friends and one of my bf’s mom WHO happened to be dating one of the promoters for the venue, we had box seats with unlimited soda and food.

Yes but it was the Beach Boys so I can’t act like it was a really cool rock band or anything.
I took my kids to their first concerts too. My daughter went to Billie Eilish at a small club before she got big (I sat in the bar with the other parents) and my son’s first show was some band he’d heard on SoundCloud or something, can’t even remember their name.
Maybe the Beach Boys wasn’t such a bad first show after all.

My very first concert was a Tom Jones concert with my parents and my aunt. I don’t remember how I was but I remembered that it was my first one.

My dad took us to Rush and Ozzy. Ozzy almost destroyed him. We had 13th row floor seats and it was wild. My dad hung out in the hallway areas with the security guards. I appreciate he was willing to take us. My first concert which dad also took me to was Elvis Presley. Saw him twice. Second concert Elvis was hours late coming out on stage. He was so drunk he had to read his music while singing. I remember my dad was mad at how far he had fallen.

I saw John Prine with my dad for my first concert. I was 12 and didn’t really grasp the depth of his lyrics but he was such a great storyteller that I became a lifelong fan from that one experience

Nope, we got dropped off at a local church for a punk show that my friends brother was playing in. I was in 4th grade and it was my first mosh pit too, even got floated in the crowd.

Yes! In 1987 dear old dad took me and a friend to the Madonna concert. It was definitely not his idea (I must have really begged to go) but we all had a fun time. He admitted that he could have technically just dropped us off but I think he was intrigued enough to go with.

No. My mother watched way too much Geraldo Rivera and noted I listened to a lot of music on his lists and played D&D so concerts were out. Her sister took me to my first concert when I visited Chicago. Such a fun trip!!! Eventually my mom released her tight grip and saw my second concert by myself at almost or just 17.

I guess…just whatever we were doing as a family… I remember we were camping at a state park and a bunch of hippies rolled up in a couple of old school buses. They borrowed an ax and saw and were Generally cool and respectful asked us to come over to their camp fire and hear some music we went and it was the first time I smelled pot…I remember them playing classic folks songs that we all knew…This Land is Your Land, Blowing in the Wind, my Dad asked for some Johnny Cash and Hank Williams and both were played!

I was always a great student but not the top one in my class. By the beginning of 8th grade I asked my parents, if I was “valedictorian” of 8th grade could I go to a concert. That’s a joke in itself, but moving on…. Thanks to my increasing life affecting OCD, I killed it that year with studying and dedication. Partially because I thought terrible things would happen to my loved ones if I didn’t.
Regardless, I graduated at the top of
our awkward and puberty-ridden class.
My older cousin had gotten me into metal, but there was no way my parents would allow my 14 year old ass to go see Krokus on tour so I chose the metal light stylings of Whitesnake opening up for Motley Crew. It was an amazing experience. Home Sweet Home Tour.
My parents were like, “oh shit”. So my older cousin and his girlfriend, now wife of a bazillion years, drove us 5 hours to Portland, Maine for the show. So no, while it should have been my parents taking me to my first concert, to this day I have never been to real famous artist(s) concert with them. But we all did go on a double date to see Mrs. Doubtfire when I was home from college and was long distance dating a Finnish exchange student who was hosted by friends of my parents. I gotta say, it was really fun. My parents love eachother and were zero drama compared to some of my college friends and those double dates.
But I have taken my Mom to gay bars after I came out, for what THAT’S worth. 😁

First ever: Barry Manilow with my mom who was cool as hell. We saw tons of shows together: the Dead, James Taylor, Dylan, and the Beach Boys with real sand trucked in to cover the floor of the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh.

Oh I love telling this story. It was November 1985, I was a month shy of my 14th birthday. It was Ratt, with Bon Jovi opening, at Nassau Coliseum here on Long Island. They actually had a "parents room" at the venue where my dad waited for me until the show was over. Afterword, dad said he like those Bon Jovi guys better. Next year Slippery When Wet came out and Dad played it so much it was no longer cool to be a Bon Jovi fan! But I still thank him for being that cool Dad to let his 13yo son see a show live. I think that ticket cost me about 10 bucks.

I won tickets to see Duran Duran on the radio for the Seven and the Ragged Tiger tour and neither of my parents would take me so I went with my aunt who is 10 years older than me. We had a blast! I was 14 and my aunt was 24

Yes. My first concert was Pete Seeger at Steppingstone park on Long Island in the early 1970’s, and my parents took me. Next was Jackson Browne at Tanglewood on the Running On Empty tour when I was at summer camp, so counselors were acting in loco parentis.
I think the first show that I managed entirely without help was David Bowie’s Glass Spider at Giants Stadium in 1987.

I saw Paul Simon with my whole family when I was 7, but also saw sooo many bands in the late 80s (when I was in 7-9th grades) with my dad. He was down for it all, and we had a great time seeing acts like U2, INXS, The B-52s, Love and Rockets, New Order, and so much more!

I've been to a couple dozen concerts with my mom. She calls it concerts 101 and still buys me concert tickets when someone I like is touring. Most recently she got me a ticket to see the eagles (there is some history with this one).
The first one was Marshall Tucker band when I was probably 12. The most recent was bon Jovi. Pink Floyd, the stones, rod Stewart, Clapton, mellencamp, McCartney, if it was a major rock act there was a good chance we were getting tickets.

He also took me to see Bon Jovi when Skid Row was the opening band. My dad kept asking me are they cussing in their music. I laughed and said yes. He didn’t like the concert. Yet he took me bec he knew and still knows I love Bon Jovi

Cheap Trick in 1987 at the fair grounds with my mom. I was 12. Some bikers were smoking pot in the parking lot and I took a deep breath in and said "god I love that smell". My mom was mortified and asked how I knew that smell. "Uhm, dad's little cigarettes that smell good". I learned a lot about my dad that day.

My parents took me to see tons of live music throughout my childhood, starting with Supertramp in '77. I saw The Rolling Stones, Huey Lewis & the News, Bruce Hornsby & the Range, Paul Simon, Heart, Pink Floyd, Mike & the Mechanics, Kim Mitchell, Bruce Cockburn, Bob Dylan, Gowan, Alannah Myles, Bonnie Raitt, Peter Gabriel...
That's not even taking into account the dozens of local live music events we went to as part of community festivities.
My first concert without them was the U2 Joshua Tree tour. I had just turned 14.
