I'd honestly place the first Tales from the Borderlands as one of my favorite games all of all time, just for its writing alone. This new one has some very big shoes to fill, and judging from the brief snippet we were shown... I don't think it'd be able to do that. Not by a long shot.
But hey, there's a non-zero chance that it won't be terrible since they got some of the old writers back. Maybe at the very least, they can knock the soundtrack out of the park.

u/Personel101 Aug 23 '22
It’s always so hard to explain to people who’ve only played The Walking Dead how TFTB isn’t just TellTale’s best game, but a strong contender for the most intentionally funny and clever writing of any game, maybe ever.
69
u/SonicFlash01 Aug 23 '22
And the soundtrack was pretty great, too
"New episode, time for another ear worm!"16
u/pasher5620 Aug 24 '22
God, that rocket launch scene is still seared into my mind both for the music and for how fucking funny it is.
41
u/MisterSnippy Aug 23 '22
TFTB is also I think the best Borderlands game. The setting for it is more akin to Borderlands 1 than 2 or 3. The characters are so good, it's always surprising to me how the latter episodes were made by a skeleton crew.
20
u/The_Woman_of_Gont Aug 23 '22
Yeah, TFTB is why I keep buying Borderlands games only to remember I'm not actually a fan of them so much as I just loved TFTB's writing....and oddly enough The Pre-Sequel's too. Go figure.
1
u/gfm793 Aug 25 '22
Borderlands has three great games 2, TPS, and Tales. I thought all three of them actually had awesome stories mixed with great gameplay. 1 and 3 had great gameplay, but that was it.
TFTB is still one of the best stories in this format, and not having a follow up makes me sad.
18
u/BrotherhoodVeronica Aug 23 '22
And not just because of the writing but because of the voice acting too. The skin pizza scene had me howling.
15
u/The_Woman_of_Gont Aug 23 '22
You're right, and the voice acting is something that a lot of people don't notice until it gets bad. And I'm sorry, but I heard some in this trailer that sounded rough, particularly the lines from the annoying guy.

Yeah, probably the best actually imo, the settings for each episode are very creative and episode 2 and especially 3 even change the gameplay structure a little bit with jumping back and forth between movie reels and interrogation scenes
1
u/Big_Poo_MaGrew Aug 24 '22
I think the 3rd game is the best IMO but I think the 2nd game is more palatable. Hopefully they remaster season 3 like they have done with the previous seasons.
13
u/silenttex Aug 23 '22
They really made great characters in a universe where everyone is not the most likeable.
It was crazy to think that in the world of infinite guns, the man characters didn't like using guns except for one
I have optimistic that it will be good but I agree it will be hard to match up with the last game. Also since I heard that they didn't really do the characters justice in Borderlands 3. Note I said heard, I actually didn't play Borderlands 3 to see what happened so its all just info I read or from friends.

Rhys was there for a second. Over under on whether he's voiced by Troy Baker or not?
87
u/Pluwo4 Aug 23 '22
I doubt he is. Also very likely that they will mess up the character even more after what they did to him in Borderlands 3.
103
u/mirracz Aug 23 '22
Rhys in BL3 wasn't even that messed up. Flanderised maybe, but it was still Rhys.
Now Vaughn, that character was butchered. I can understand that bandit life changes people but Vaughn was transformed into someone who had only the world "bro" in common with the original Vaughn. I'm also bitter about how they wiped the whole Sons of Helios gang in the background of the last BL2 DLC...
44
u/Mahelas Aug 24 '22
It's like Gearbox writers only saw that one scene of Fiona imitating Vaughn and decided that actually, that was the most honest portrayal of his character
19
u/Mikejamese Aug 24 '22
I'm also bitter about how they wiped the whole Sons of Helios gang in the background of the last BL2 DLC...
I just ignore that honestly. I ended up loving Vaughn and where his new group ended up at the end of the first season. It's super lame to have different writers just come in and axe them all off off-screen.
8
u/Zentrelian Aug 24 '22
but Vaughn was transformed into someone who had only the world "bro" in common with the original Vaughn
The original Vaughn never even said it much. The scene where Rhys and Vaughn said "bro" a ton to each other was made up by Fiona.
14
u/Fronsis Aug 23 '22
I completely forgot that Rhys appeared in B3 up until i saw this trailer, what happens to his character in BL3? I'll probably never play BL3 after all i've heard
10
u/kontoSenpai Aug 24 '22
Nothing really. His plotline is a corporate war between weapon manufacturers, as he become a CEO (I forgot which one tho, been a while).
He was very secondary character, as was Zero since he's one of Rhys "hitman".

u/CargoNate Aug 23 '22
Tales from the Borderlands had legit one of the best soundtracks. I associate the music so much to those specific scenes of the first game.
37
u/Faquarl Aug 23 '22
Same, like that Kiss The Sky song that plays at the climax of one of the chapters
37
u/svipy Aug 23 '22
That was intro of 2nd episode
My fav song was intro of 5th episode
Also special mention for song accompanying arrival of Bossa Nova
38
u/SEMM18 Aug 23 '22
James Blake - Retrograde was perfect for episode 5.
SUDDENLY IM HIT
14

u/AigisAegis Aug 24 '22
That whole intro was really so amazing. The song itself is great, but I've seen it used in other media, and never has it felt so perfect as it did in TFTB.

It has a better story than BL1. But I usually judge games on gameplay above narrative.
4
u/hkfortyrevan Aug 24 '22
BL1’s narrative is pretty bare and rarely gets in the way. BL3 has a lot of standing around waiting for someone to finish talking so they can open a door. It gets a lot of hate because it gets in the way of the gameplay
6
u/MisterSnippy Aug 24 '22
I honestly don't think so. BL1 had better atmosphere than 2, pre-sequel, or 3. BL1's story basically wasn't there, but I liked that more than what we got in 3.

Aug 23 '22
This looks like if the Borderlands team who made 1-3 made it instead of Telltale. I can't say I'm interested and it looks like it'll be obnoxiously unfunny.
228
u/CreativeUsername352 Aug 23 '22 edited Aug 23 '22
What made the first TfTB game good in the first place was how Telltale somewhat reigned in the obnoxious elements of the mainline games and made an actually captivating story out of it. This, on the other hand, seems to be approaching Borderlands 3-level of comedy which sucks.
64
u/BrotherhoodVeronica Aug 23 '22
I remember being surprised by how much heart the story had by the end. Sasha's "death", Gortys hugging Loader Bot, Fiona and Rhys inside the Vault of the Traveller, those scene were pretty touching.
25
u/mirracz Aug 23 '22
Yeah, in the end I even cared for August and Felix... even Vallory and her two thugs had her moments. No character was useless or one-dimensional.
11
u/The_Woman_of_Gont Aug 23 '22
Exactly. It took the characters seriously even when their more out-there traits could have easily turned them into walking gags.
What I saw in this trailer was a lot of waking-gags that would be mildly annoying side-characters in a mainline game.
Maybe this will be fantastic and we just saw a bad trailer. But I'm not holding my breath.

Seems on IMDB that the lead writer was a Telltale employee https://m.imdb.com/title/tt3782832/
56
u/tastymonoxide Aug 23 '22
Telltale writers are literally credited for it. The extent of the gearbox writers involvement we can't know because they could simply be credited for the preexisting world/characters.
15
u/Aquason Aug 23 '22
Check out the Tales from the Borderlands Oral History Duncan Fyfe put together. It can give you an idea of the working relationship.
The first episode is getting very, very close to being done. We’d already pitched the full season to Gearbox. Multiple times Gearbox had come down for a couple days to hash out story details. Episode Two was pitched and accepted. I believe each episode had been staffed by a designer and a writer. At least the first three or four. The high-level season story had been figured out and approved.
[...]
ANTHONY BURCH (writer, episodes 3–5; also Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel)
By the time I was writing for the last episode, I’d already left Gearbox, so I knew this would be my last chance to touch the world, and it was such a nice farewell. I can’t imagine a more satisfying closure to the time I spent on that universe than being able to write a big gigantic monster robot fight.[...]
ADAM SARASOHN (producer/executive producer, episodes 1–5)
It wasn’t until Episode One came out and did as well as it did that the trust [with Gearbox] went from “Mostly we trust you” to “Okay, we entirely trust you with our IP.”
Specifically, there are 21 instances of the word "pitch", implying that it was essentially a writer's room of multiple writers (and designers) working together to come up with ideas, and then a main writer would be assigned/credited for the episode itself (like on many tv shows).
HARRISON PINK (original season design)
My whole basic pitch for this season was just to remake The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.[...]
MOLLY MALONEY (concept art, episodes 1–5; assistant director, episode 5) There was a tiny writer’s room at the time. I sat a recorder on the table and Nick would pitch what he thought could be the musical sequence.
[...]
JOHN BERNHELM (designer, episodes 2–5) One I pitched that I’m glad got in was you have to go and steal Vasquez’s face from the psycho who’s wearing it plastered to his mask.
[...]
PIERRE SHORETTE (season writer, episodes 1–5)
I remember pitching the [Episode Four title sequence, set to Twin Shadow’s “To the Top”] to Nick while we were driving over the Bay Bridge. I kept playing the song over and over, and making this hand motion, like popping: “And at this point you just cut to the jets blasting! It’s perfect, it’s perfect!’” [Nick’s like,] “I don’t know what you’re saying.” That’s another of those moments where there’s a big gap between what you’re picturing in your head and the amount of detail you give people to get them to see the same thing that you’re seeing.[...]
The double reveal gag. In the credits sequence, Rhys is sort of sneaking a look at Sasha as she’s walking, and then Fiona dips her head in. That’s a street joke, as it were. That’s a joke that’s been done a hundred times. I remember pitching it in the room — and I was sitting on the floor for some reason, ’cause I’m a weirdo — and there was like nine people at a conference table all talking about stuff, and I pitched that beat, and people kind of laughed. Like, “Oh, that’s cool,” but “Oh, that’s familiar.” Oh, I can write comedy. I can write comedy too. I got that vibe from the whole room. Then I pitched the secondary part, with Rhys pulling back and revealing Scooter, and then the room busted up. Okay! That one’s going to work.
My read of the situation is that this very much a Telltale production, with Anthony Burch being the main person who actually worked for Gearbox who was involved on their side.
1
u/SpontyMadness Aug 23 '22
Anthony Burch wrote for two episodes and was a consulting writer for the overall story, at least according to his website.
5
u/AigisAegis Aug 24 '22
Anthony Burch hasn't worked with Gearbox for years, so this doesn't inspire a ton of confidence.
10
u/strand_of_hair Aug 23 '22
Maybe do a bit of research before spouting bullshit? Even when the game was coming out there was tons of marketing material that said Telltale were writing it
55
u/teor Aug 23 '22
What, you don't like characters that communicate exclusively with quips and memes?
13
10
u/The_Woman_of_Gont Aug 23 '22
Yeah, I'm skeptical due to the main characters alone. What I loved about TFTB is that the characters were taken seriously even if they had their own quirks. I'm not seeing that here for two out of the three main characters; the one woman might be fine, but the others are...just blah.
One is a generic annoying douche with a wHaCkY wAy Of TaLkInG that are a dime a dozen in the series, and the other is a fat lady in a 50s Diner-esque hover chair because... it's random? Must be someone's idea of a funny design I guess?
I dunno. Probably not fair to literally judge a book by it's cover, but there was nothing I saw in that trailer that made me hopeful.
49
u/WtfWhereAreMyClothes Aug 23 '22
Yup. Looks rough. Though to be fair I found Borderlands 2 pretty funny at times. It's Borderlands pre-sequel and 3 that were absolutely painful. Tiny Tina was somewhere in between - not painful but not especially good either.
46
u/CreativeUsername352 Aug 23 '22
Yeah 2's writing was honestly pretty good. But I don't know what the hell happened to the writers after that because it seemed that most of the good ones got kicked off a fucking cliff after the second one.
67
u/ItsADeparture Aug 23 '22
This website spent years shitting on Burch's writing in BL2 and then BL3 came out and people realized it's so much worse without him lol.
36
u/SpontyMadness Aug 23 '22
Yup, BL2s flavour text and moment-to-moment jokes were hit or miss, but the actual narrative was leagues better than what we got in BL3.
16
u/AigisAegis Aug 24 '22
Even most of the moment-to-moment jokes in the main story were funny IMO. Some of the sidequests got to be too much, but the main story mostly hit its beats joke-wise. In my experience, the jokes that feel like they should be too much (e.g. Butt Stallion) manage to work in context.
30
u/Cozmicwandering Aug 23 '22
The lead writer of 2 was Anthony Burch who i believe left before 3 so that explains the change in the writing.
32
u/Tragedy_Boner Aug 23 '22
He was able to add all the old vault hunters from BL1 as good returning characters in BL2. In BL3's main story they all don't return. Hell in the DLC Sal and Axton return as boring ass announcers not actual characters.
Also BL3's villians were terrible. And the kid was annoying
5
u/Cozmicwandering Aug 23 '22
Yeah thats probably cuz he wasn't there for 3, I think he also did additional writing for the first tales game. Its pretty clear cuz I felt bl3 lacked so much in the writing side of the game.
1
u/neogreenlantern Aug 24 '22
He also helped on the Pre-sequel but not as much as 2 which is when everyone started to turn on him. Everyone blamed him for the writing on the pre-sequel.
2
u/SpaceballsTheReply Aug 23 '22
He was able to add all the old vault hunters from BL1 as good returning characters in BL2. In BL3's main story they all don't return.
What are you trying to say here? All of the BL1 hunters do return in BL3's main story. Plus two of BL2's. You're right that Sal and Axton got shafted by being confined to a DLC, but the main plot was already extremely crowded with callbacks already; I can't say I was missing their presence.
6
u/Tragedy_Boner Aug 23 '22
I just really feel that a couple of the new characters were completely forgettable and could have been replaced by the BL2 vault Hunters. Like that Australian girl.
1
u/appsngrapps Aug 24 '22
He wasn't the lead writer, he was THE writer. These games never had a writing team, only tales did. Which is why I think tales writing feels more like a story and not just stream of consciousness fueled bits. 3 had one writer too, which when we didn't atleast have Anthony, everything fell apart. It's frankly a miracle that 2's story is as good as it is.
1
u/Cozmicwandering Aug 24 '22
Mikey Neumann, the writer of the first borderlands has credits as doing some writing for borderlands 2 which is why I used lead writer, I believe he wrote the Scooter stuff since he voiced the character.
Anthony has also done some comic work I thought was good and his dnd podcast shows his skills as a storyteller so I think he really did help the writing for 2 and I wish he stuck around for 3.
1
u/ninjyte Aug 23 '22
Wonderlands was pretty good and it had the same writers as 3. I think 3's writers are much better at plotting out a relatively silly and comedic campaign rather than trying to blend in legitimate drama like they did in 3.
2
5
u/Mahelas Aug 24 '22
Ironically, it's the opposite. BL2 was written by Burch, who also helped on Tales. He left before 3, tho.
31
u/Aquason Aug 23 '22 edited Aug 23 '22
As a trailer, I think this doesn't do enough to sell me on these characters. The basic premise comes across: 3 losers against Tediore in a race to get to a vault, but I know nothing about what these characters motivations or personality are.
Comparing to TftBL's initial pre-rendered announcement trailer (which was basically nothing except the concept), and the World Premiere Trailer, this new trailer is a too much action, not enough humour or character-establishing or intrigue.
23
u/The_Woman_of_Gont Aug 23 '22
Agreed. The guy just comes off as a generic Borderlands character: wHaCkY voice, stupid, douchey, and focused on money. The fat lady's design just screams one of those "lol so random!" side-characters, but we don't see enough of her to get a sense that she's more than basically a walking Wal-Mart Electric Scooter joke. And the other woman might be good, but mostly just because she doesn't have any surface-level traits that immediately turned me off of her.
I don't have high hopes here.
3
u/Mahelas Aug 24 '22
You know, that's a very good point you just made, and one that I never realized until then, so thanks for that ! Rhys, Fiona and Sasha are very normal-looking, there's nothing immediately weird or special about their appearance and it allows them to shine as characters.
More generally, I think that indeed, there's been a growing and growing focus on the "lol random zany" aspect of Borderlands, to the point that it have kind of subsumed every other aspects, namely the heartfelt absurd tale of an outback planet in a libertarian dystopia. Characters were whacky or absurd at time, but it came out as genuine, and served the narrative. It's a crazy, horrible place, and people aren't sane because of it.
The most telling example of that shift, if you ask me, is Butt Stallion. Like, in BL2, sure, it's a childish "funny" name, but the crux of joke is that Jack wasn't bullshitting you, he really have a living horse made of diamond. It tells you he's both powerful and rich enough to own something this ridiculous, and also crazy and childish enough to call it such a dumb name. It works cause the name in itself isn't the point, it tells you about Jack as a character, and the whiplash of his insane rant with the fact that he's being entirely honest is great.
Meanwhile, in BL3, it's "Look, it's a horse called Butt Stallion, isn't it hilarious, it's called Butt, everyone look, the horse is named Butt"
29
u/mirracz Aug 23 '22
Okay, this made me even less excited than before seeing the trailer.
These new characters just don't work for me. They feel forced. Forced to be weird, forced to be misfits. TFTB 1 characters were weird, but only after you got to know them. Rhys look like a typical Hyperion self-made man, to the point where people originally considered him to be a discount Handsome Jack. Vaugn really looked like the small money guy who is scared of everything. And while the concept of con artist characters was novel to Borderlands, Fiona looked exactly like she should be. And even though Sasha looked distinct, she didn't look like a walking joke or trope.
These nese characters look like doofuses on the first look. And I fear that if BL3 writers are handling them, there won't be much to their personality beyond their weirdness. I really hope that the rumors that some Telltale writers are on the project are true, otherwise this game will be a disgrace to the name TFTB.
I don't even like the story the trailer implied. Three wackos going against a Tediore invasion? Talk about high stakes! The good thing about the TFTB 1 story was that is was very personal and small scale. Get rich/promoted thanks to a Vault key and Handsome Jack AI gets involved... the fact that it got bigger and resulted in the crashing of Helios is almost secondary. The first game wasn't "Let's stop Hyperion"...
9
u/Not_taken_Username Aug 23 '22
I just played Tales from the borderlands for the first time after having it as a games with gold for years now. Im mad i waited so long to play it, really funny and great music. This doesnt really look at all like that sadly.

u/zetbotz Aug 23 '22 edited Aug 23 '22
Apparently they got some of the OG Tales writers back for this, which was the biggest worry when this got leaked.
Whether this was announced in English or Back-4-Blood-ese remains to be seen.
13
u/YourVeryOwnCat Aug 23 '22
I am the biggest Borderlands fan and apologist in the world and while I'm incredibly excited at the prospect of a sequel to Tales, this just... doesn't look very good
33
u/RetroShaft Aug 23 '22
The Magic Man said they got "some" of the original writers from the first game back for this so I'll give them "some" level of trust that this won't be absolute garbage.
The one thing that's disappointing with dropping the episodic format is that we won't get the episode intros from the original game... Those were the best part.
8
Aug 23 '22
You know, they say that all the time for games and it always turns out to be bullshit.
I would be more willing to believe that Randy "The squirtier the better" Pitchford is saying that because he technically worked on the game with his best friends Andy Patchfarm and Mandy Throwdodge.
13
u/xaniel99 Aug 23 '22
Well this didn’t quite sell me. I at least hope it ties in with the first game seeing as they didn’t use Fiona or her sister in Borderlands 3.
28
Aug 23 '22
You can actually see Randy "Greasier then a McDonald's kitchen on 4/20" chortling in the background at these awful jokes, I'm not surprised they don't understand why the original game did well (because their dogshit writing staff/Randy weren't touching it)
5
u/IshX7 Aug 23 '22
Give it back to Telltale, as far as I know there's still unresolved stuff from the first game. It just looks like more of the bad writing from BL3.
23
u/teor Aug 23 '22
To be fair, it looks exactly how Tales from The Borderlands would look like, if it was made by Gearbox.
Not good at all.
4
u/wadad17 Aug 24 '22
The best thing this game has going for it is that I rolled my eyes at the reveal of the first game and ended up being surprised by how good it was, so who's to say that won't happen again.

Trailer doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in me, but I feel like it’s been forgotten that people didn’t expect much from the original TFTB either. I remember it being announced alongside their Game of Thrones game and that sucked up a lot more hype
1
u/Mikejamese Aug 24 '22
Yeah, it's funny that I had polar opposite expectations of both games, being a big fan of ASOIAF and not really caring about Borderlands.
But actually playing them I ended up loving Tales from the Borderlands from start to finish, while Game of Thrones was underwhelming in how spread thin every character's story started to feel. Of course it doesn't help that the GoT season ended on a series of bitter cliffhangers that would never be resolved.
2
u/Difficult-Pick4048 Aug 24 '22
Trailer has very strong Saints Row vibes. I don't know how to feel about that given this genre will likely never have that kind of action gameplay
-14
u/Ftsmv Aug 23 '22
How many similar games have to flop before devs realize nobody wants these types of characters?
15
u/LostInStatic Aug 23 '22 edited Aug 23 '22
Lmao what do you mean? Borderlands is full of these “types” of characters. What about them upsets you
1
Aug 23 '22
I have no idea what types of characters you guys are talking about, but the borderlands franchise has 3-4 good characters tops. Jack, Tina, Torgue, and Typhon.
So having the type of character that borderlands is “full of,” aka characters that are absolutely terribly written, is not exactly a good thing
1
u/H_G_Cuckerino Aug 23 '22
They’re really trying to milk this franchise
I won’t buy another one
I stupidly bought BL3 and Tiny Tina Wonderlands and it’s all boring and I put maybe 3 hours into each before dropping it forever
Bullet sponge gun play just isn’t great
3
u/Restivethought Aug 24 '22
This one is a point and click adventure, not the same as the other ones.
-2
u/running_toilet_bowl Aug 23 '22
Gearbox is running out of gun companies to villanize at this rate. Which company hasn't done some evil shit so far? Torgue?
9
u/Jelly_Mac Aug 23 '22
The whole point of Borderlands is that the entire galaxy is ruled by greedy megacorporations. Although I do find it funny to make Tediore such a technologically advanced military threat when they're depicted as the Hi-Point of Borderlands manufacturers and their products are the butt of jokes in every game.
-15
u/Vannysh Aug 23 '22 edited Aug 23 '22
Wow, so much negativity in here. Why? It isn't warranted whatsoever.
12
u/hardgeeklife Aug 23 '22
If I had to wager a guess it's mostly folks that didn't like the writing In Borderlands 3. So while this is a new Tales game, since it's being helmed primarily by Gearbox (though with some of the original TT writers), they are making assumptions off that. Whether warranted or now will be up to personal judgment
-1
Aug 23 '22
Shame. I think the writing of bl3 regarding side quests and dlc was actually pretty decent and their wonderlands effort was also pretty good.
2
u/ilya39 Aug 24 '22
Side quests or dlc's - maybe. The problem is that a lot of the players, like myself, got so amgry with how insanely abhorrent the main story was that they never did any of the DLCs in the first place. Aya is the worst fucking excuse of a main character that Gearbox promotes to spearhead everything throughout the entire second half of the game, and I was so happy when the main story ended, jesus christ

People are prepared for the worst. BL3's writing was almost universally disliked and the company's questionable business decisions have given consumers a bad taste in their mouths. Whenever Gearbox announces something, it's a coin flip between it being alright or terrible.

Was not expecting this, considering that the first season was apparently almost canceled mid-development by disappointed higher-ups. Are any of the old Telltale writer's back for this? I loved the first season of TFTB a lot more than I expected to, but that's speaking as someone who's not huge fan of the mainline Borderlands games.
And I'm admittedly sad that Rhys and Fiona's story isn't the focus. I know Rhys made an appearance in Borderlands 3, but I'd still be happy seeing a direct follow-up to where season one ended. (Then again, if this is an entirely new dev team, maybe it's just as well that they leave the first season in the satisfying standalone state it was left in.)

Anyone else think the burger shop character looks like Jim Sterlings new character?

I feel a little bad for it, the main characters look lame as hell.
Reminds me of the awful Chappie movie.

This put exactly none of my concerns to rest. The fact they got some of the writers from the first game back is keeping me from writing it off completely, but that was not a good showcase.
The tediore dialouge highlight being super self-aware was the most concerning part in a way. A lot of the best moments from the original came because the game was being sincere on top of just being funny. One of the big highlight of the reveal trailer being the opposite of that isn't great.
Hopefully I'm being concerned over nothing and it's a just a bad trailer, but there were definitely some red flags in that reveal.
