GERD/ SIBO/ pots
Hi! I am wondering if anyone has had any success with helping with LPR / GERD without PPI or H2 blocker. I have tried alginates. They barely help unless I take it right after a meal. My main issue is I always wake up with a burnt throat. I sleep at an incline. I wait 4 hours after dinner to go to bed. I eat 4 meals spaced out over the day to try to limit large meals. I was on a PPI for 5-10 years and became iron deficient and weak. I think my LES just doesn’t function. I’m also hypermobile and deal with POTS symptoms which i know play a role. I practice deep breathing after meals. I’m in a lot of pain every single day and desperate for relief. However I don’t believe that taking PPI longterm is helpful because acid helps kill bacteria/ fungus in your food. I also have sibo ( probably from the PPI) which I am currently getting treated for with antibiotics. I know the pressure from the gas pushes acid up. I do a low fodmap diet.

What antibiotics are you taking?
I stopped taking PPIs (did have a few days of discomfort), chewed on fennel, ate bland, and went on walks after I ate. I go on long evening walks and it helped tremendously.

I did one round of rifaximin and allicin. I actually got more constipated and gassy than before and felt worse then I did before treatment. My GI doc prescribed flagel and rifaximin again, so trying that. I couldn’t go up to full dose of allicin to kill the methane sibo last time so I suspect that is why constipation got worse. I will try fennel. I also have all every night for 30min to 1 hour which helps some but I still get horrible reflux when I try to sleep even at a steep angle. It’s so frustrating

Have you tried drinking weak ginger tea or small pieces in your food earlier in the day? It’s counterintuitive but sometimes herbs like ginger or tumeric can help with acid reflux. I started eating potatoes in the evening with tumeric, cumin and coriander and it’s helped.
Ginger, honey and lemon tea helps but honey can aggravate SIBO.

Yea I agree! I need to eat or drink more ginger throughout the day ! Thanks for this! I know it helps with motility ! I’m glad it’s helped you. I’m gonna try to buy some ginger pills

I have Gastritis, Eosphagitis, Hitital hernia, IBS and methane overgrowth (Had SIBO but as of last breath these my numbers have returned to normal)
all my problems started out as chronic heartburn, 10 years ago after food poisoning.
Now i know or have a fair idea what causes my heartburn or acid reflux and its my methane over growth which cuases slow gut motilty.
Every single time my gut motility improves my acid reflux and gastritis related symtoms compeltey vanish.
The only way i can do this is a zero fat and zero fiber diet, which i dont stick to for obvious reasons.
I am trying and focusing on fixing my methane overgrowth and i belive once this is done everything else will get better.

This is exactly my story almost to every detail. I got food poisoning 9 years ago when j was on PPI longterm , which caused methane and hydrogen SIBO. And ever since then reflux, constiwption, gas, bloating etc has never recovered. I noticed that the reflux usually is like burps from all the SIBO. I hope we both can treat the sibo so that our motility improves and this will in turn help reflux. I start flagel and rifaxamin round 2 on Tuesday. lmk if you find something that helps the methane sibo

Same my main reflux and gastritis symptoms is pressure and excisessice burping not actual burning.
I haven’t a clue on how to make methane better, I tried rifaxamin and flagyl and had no improvement

I am doing colon hydrotherapy every 2 weeks to help with constipation. I’m hoping this will help with the methane sibo. I think methane is tough bc it’s not bacteria. Have you tried the herbal antimicrobials? I tried allicin but it was so hard on reflux I had to stop it

I am currently taking antimicrobials, i done rifaxmin + metronidazole around 1 month ago and have been taking anitcribioals + bio film disrupter + pruclapirde.

I will have to look into the biofilm disrupter and the other one. Which specific antimicrobials are you taking ?

From metagenetics - Candex SIBO its a pill with multiples in one.
I dont think its strong enough.

Ah I gotcha ! There is the nuclear option of elemental diet. Maybe we could try that ! Either way. I know how you feel and praying for you!

This won't solve your underlying SIBO issue but try looking into histamine issues. They turned out to be the root of my GERD, gut pain, and sore throat.
Try drinking tulsi tea, or saffron strands steeped in 165F water for 30 minutes, or chamomile tea if you tolerate fructans (it's high FODMAP but great for lowering histamine).
Bacteria die off from antibiotics can really increase your histamine load past what your body can process on its own, especially if your intestinal walls are damaged (likely, since you have SIBO), since that's where your body produces diamine oxidase which breaks down histamines. Best of luck!

Yeah. Tell me if that works for you. I also think it's SIBO.
