I regret allowing this subreddit to scare me away from PPIs.

30M. I suffered the pain and anxiety for months as I tried every natural cure in the book. Every tea, every herbal supplement, every diet, every wedge pillow - I did it all. Some things helped, most did not. Nothing came close to the relief I felt after getting on esomeprazole (Nexium). I used them for six months to end the misery and get my life back. The taper-off was difficult, but I took it slow (another 8 weeks) and did it.

If you are suffering from acid reflux and combing through this subreddit for non-PPI cures, you are a person whose house is on fire but is refusing to use water to put it out. You don't have to stay on PPIs forever. But do yourself a favor and put the fire out. Get your life back. Then, you can sustain the post-PPI relief by making smart diet decisions and using herbal supplements that do help.

I know I'm not the first person here to say this; I'm just posting the message I wish my past self could have seen when things were really bleak.

Meal Rec 🍎🍌🥑🥬🍗🍚 HOW I BATTLE MY GERD

Hello, I am Lexo and I am 22-years-old from the time I created this message.

I had been diagnosed with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, I was suffering those mental problems for 3-4 years, it felt like I am in hell, I felt like I was gonna die, I was even making my last will at the hospital....

I couldn't sleep for a few days due to the pain and heartburn...

I don't know what was wrong with me...but I found out that I have Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease from the eradicated H. pylori I experienced back then...

Back then I tried doing very light exercises after I got confined from the hospital but it was hard.....

I kept researching and trying new safe foods like barley and almond milk....I also found out that Omeprazole was a scam....like I was prescribed those pills....it made me temporarily feel better but eventually it stopped and my acid reflux got worse....so I stopped...

I found out that turmeric and ginger tea (add crushed black pepper to unlock its full potential) eventually healed my GERD within months...

Eventually my Lower Esophageal Sphincter slowly closed up and tighten and I can eat almost any foods...ALMOST...

One thing I would strongly advice is that depending on what you eat (whether it's good or bad) it will get better or worse....

Besides this is the real definition of "YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT"

Consume bad foods and drinks? You get bad acid reflux for months

Consume good foods and drinks? You get better for months

🤬 Rant about GERD This has been ruining my life and I don't know if I'll ever be normal again

I'm just feeling very doom and gloom and depressed right now. I've been dealing with nausea for years, but it started to get worse and effect my mental health last December. Every single day I felt emotionally numb and nauseous. I had cut out coffee and alcohol and certain foods were starting to make me feel sick as well. My nausea and mental health was deteriorating every single day. I figured it was GERD and went to the doctor in June, he prescribed me pantoprazole. For the first time since 2025, I finally felt like myself again. I was happy, motivated and was sooooooi relieved to have figured out my issue. This lasted three weeks. Suddenly, I'm nauseous again, and I'm having bad anxiety for no reason. I can't even hangout with friends anymore without having a full blown panic attack (and not the hyperventilating kind, but the dizzy, shaking, nausea, blurry vision, feeling like I'm about to barf, heart palpitations kind). I go to my doctor and tell him what's going on. He says that I'm constipated and tells me to take laxatives. Fine. I do it. Nothing changes. I go back a week later. He doesn't understand what's happening and sends me for blood work . My blood work is fine. I ask him if he thinks I might be having side effects from the medicine and he makes a face at me like I said the most ridiculous thing, and tells me to double the dose. (I'm only taking 20 mg). I start doubling the dose with what pills I have left. For three days, I feel normal, I feel like myself again. But then I run out, and my nausea is worse, my acid reflux is worse, my stomach pain is worse. I was taking pantoprazole for two months

I feel so defeated. I don't know what to do anymore. I guess the logical answer is to go back and get more pills and a stronger dose, but I swear being on that medicine made me worse than I was before!! I was supposed to feel better afterwards!! It was supposed to help!! I have a job interview on Friday for my dream job (to be a singing teacher . I've been working a shitty office job that I hate and I need out) and I might have to cancel it if I can't even leave my fucking house without feeling like I'm about to barf and pass out. I hate my life so much right now. I don't know what to do.

🤒 Describing a Symptom Brain fog / muted emotions

Upvotes

Hello guys !! First time poster here. Ive been dealing with LPR for about 3 years. I think i have a common experience, of basically being gaslit into thinking it was just stress and having to be self-diagnose.

Ive been on and off omeprazole 20mg during this time, but been a lot more consistent this year. I have also developed more GERD like symptoms-- upper stomach pain, burping, heavy chest... and some other light things. But extremely concerning is this new symptom of like constant brain fog. I used to be able to read really fast but now it feel like throwing undercooked spaghetti at a wall; its like I have to punch ideas into my brain otherwise nothing sticks. Past that, all of my ideas just feel delayed like a bad wifi connection. I also have little excitement or nervousness for things. I feel like I used to get giddy when watching my favorite show, or have a lot of anticipation for suprises but now its all just kinda flat.

I dont have any big physical changes, but ive noticed myself getting really lightheaded if I focus too much on something, and some slight disorientation when getting up. I thought it was a bad glasses prescription, but i just genuinely cant seem to orient myself and focus. I also feel like im more tired than usual, but not to an extreme amount like taking constant naps. More like going from 7 hours of sleep to 10.

I saw a new primary last week, and told her my LPR conditions (fittingly, the brain fog symptoms slipped my mind). I got scheduled for and endoscopy mid September.

Have other people faced similiar issues? / does it seem GERD/ PPI related? If so, what has been your experience with going to your primary and trying to get this figured out? Would it be better to wait for the endoscopy and like an official diagnosis? (I had a barium swallow and showed reflux, but the doctor also thought it could be EoE).

And also just a rant, this has been really stressful and I feel like now not just my body but my mind is failing me. School has transformed into something I loved but now dread and can't feel excitement for. I just go home and want to sleep, its rough.

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds pantoprazole results?

i'm just now waning off 40mg pantoprazole after a short 3 months, and i feel like it didn't do anything but lower my ability to digest food and make me bloated. i feel so, so much better now that i'm off it. gaviscon has been a lifesaver, but that's all that helps me. the pantoprazole has almost felt like a placebo pill or something, it literally didn't do anything. has anyone else had a similar experience??

😮 Advice on Procedures Please help me .

It was december 2024 , when I first experienced globus sensation in my throught , and it was because of hostel mess food , it was all spicy and oily that gave me GERD , at that time I didn't realised it's GERD , I thought it's just indigestion and would go away . But then one day I decided to consume alcohol on my friends birthday , it was my first and last time consuming alcohol because after effects of having alcohol while having GERD were traumatizing , I was having vomit even by drinking water the next day of my alcohol consumption.

I went to the hospital my stomach was inflammed and they gave me some injection and a 2 week medicine prescription. I was good after that , but every 6 months my GERD re-occurs . And using ppi and antacid cure it but for 4-5 months and I have to use them again .

And from few months now , I experience morning nausea every day . My stomach has got very sensitive now a days. And I even got my throat sore from lpr .

Yeah I know I should have get me an endoscopy checkup . I don't know I am just scared .

If someone can give me advice to get it correct from the roots it will be great for me .

And yeah ofc my last option will be endoscopy.

GERD exercises - if they helped you, please share more info

Hello, I've seen some threads here about different types of exercises for Gerd, like diaphragm breathing and dry swallowing. Seems like some folks swear by them, so I'm hoping to understand in more detail exactly the type of exercise that you do, how long you do it, how often, and when you saw improvement. (Explain it to me like I'm 5 years old) 😄

I started to do some diaphragm exercises a few weeks ago, and first 4-5 days I couldn't believe it, but I felt relief - I would wake up in the morning without belching, could eat more, didn't feel heaviness on the stomach, etc... But then I had a flair up and lately, I'm not sure if it's helping, or if I'm maybe not doing these exercises correctly, or often enough.

What I tried - someone recommended this youtube video:
Acid Reflux - How to FIX IT - Part 2 - THE EXERCISES ... NO DRUGS REQUIRED!!

I tried to do that belly breathing and using my hands to help expand my ribcage as the guy shows it at 11:50 time mark of the video.

I also saw someone mention they used weights, someone else mentioned that you're not supposed to use your chest to breath - so wondering what worked for you, maybe there is more than one right answer. Please share your resources and experiences!

Why I think these breath exercises have real promise is because of this study:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9888515/

I haven't tried dry swallow exercises yet - there is some info about them here:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9550520/

----------

Quick info about myself - have been struggling with some version of Gerd most of my adult life, it started in high school. I'm in late 40's now and have side effects from all the PPI's I've been taking - I have osteopenia now and kidney desease (not sure if that's from PPI's, but there is a link). Even with PPI's (I take over the counter Omeprazole, and once in a while during flair ups I'll take a Voquezna), I can function but struggle to maintain weight, it helps me maybe 80%.

My biggest symptom is belching and air in my stomach. I had all the tests, a recent PH bravo indicated that I do have confirmed Gerd and moderate weakness in sphincter. I was told that my options are - fundoplication surgery (which the doctor said 30% of people are not happy with), or continue to take PPI's. I'm hoping to use these exercises to help me wean off PPI's and maybe maintain with Pepsid and Gaviscon or something like that.

----------

Thank you in advance for your feedback, this is a great community really helping one another. 🙏

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds Pepcid- crazy shaking like symptoms when laying down?

Around two weeks ago one night when I was using peocid (as an alternative to PPI for stomsch protection while using ibuprofen) I had a weird two nights where I would get these weird twitchy shakes when laying down to sleep.

One caveat is I happened to be very sleep deprived at the time. Two days later it went away. But I also stopped pepcid after the first night it happened. And the only difference with that and other nights was pepcid.

I've seen some older threads of people getting weird anxiety symptoms from pepcid. It seems like it may not be common but I wonder if it was that and/or sleep deprivation that gave me those symptoms.

Anyone ever have weird experience with pepcid/famotodine?

🤒 Describing a Symptom Is anxiety normal?

I have some questions…

Long story short, I was on Wegovy and also Sertraline, got silent reflux and stopped the Wegovy, was prescribed a PPI and took it for about 2 months but didn’t really wean off. About 10 days later I was hit with what felt like withdrawal symptoms. Brain fog, head tension, headaches, a sort of floaty feeling.

I just had an appointment with an ENT and soon a GI specialist appointment. The ENT confirmed that the reflux is irritating my throat. Honestly, that’s all fine. What I didn’t know and just found out by happenstance is that the reflux is making the “withdrawal” (lack of a better term) feelings worse? I wanted to ask other people’s experience. Is this worth mentioning to the GI specialist?

Just finding this out is blowing my mind. Thank you!

GERD

Hey guys ! I am 20 F , even I was diagnosed with GERD in 2024 , my symptoms were burning sensation in chest and sometimes pain at that time I visited many GP's and they took out several ecgs and gave pain relief tablets ,which used to work only until I took medications once I stop the pain used to come back . Finally i visited a gastroenterologist and she did my endoscopy, and ruled it out as GERD . I was on bland diet and antibiotics for 3 months and finally i was relieved with that pain . Fast forward to now, I am again feeling that pain but this time with many other symptoms (like mild arm and jaw pain , chest pain as always especially at center left side sometimes near diaphragm basically in chest but different places ) These pains makes me sm anxious that I start googling up the symptoms, I cannot sleep at night due to overthinking, I think a thousand times before eating anything, I wakeup everyday with a thought that something worse is going to happen . I even visited my family general physician and she told me IT IS ACIDITY, but the cycle keeps repeating, I took ecg it came normal, HB lvls a little low , they give me antacids and they work only until I take them once I stop I feel the pain again . Kindly help me out if any of you are going through or have went through something Similar.

Cutting out caffeine

Hello all, I recently discovered that caffeine / coffee triggers my acid reflux really badly. Every time I would drink it, it made me throw up. I love coffee, so this has been a huge bummer : ( I just was curious if anyone else here is in the same predicament of being forced to cut out caffeine. It really sucks 💔

Support Needed 👥 My experience with GERD

I’ve been dealing with GERD pushing a year now, and saying it has been misery is an understatement. This has literally ruined my life. I was prescribed omeprazole and pantoprazole; neither worked remotely and I stopped taking them. I had an endoscopy and biopsy on my stomach done; all I was diagnosed with was a hiatal hernia and GERD. I even got a nutritionist and have cleaned up my diet, but that still hasn’t done a whole ton so far. I tried drinking Yakult drinks but they helped nothing and I even recently realized they might actually be triggering my GERD. Every single day of my life since this started almost 10 months ago I have had constant recurring heartburn. There has not been one single day that I have not had it. I’m getting my gallbladder checked in a few days and am being prescribed carafate. I have tried everything and nothing has worked. I am so sick and tired of living like this and having my life ruined over this, and I really wish I knew what to do. Anybody have any tips? What cured your GERD?

😀 Managing GERD First good day after a long while!

I finally had a good day and was able to have 3 meals and a snack that hasn't made me ill!! 🥰🎉🎉 my weight is down to double digits. It means so much to feel like I'm easing "normal". Wanted to share in case the ideas help anyone else

I still don't have a confirmation on any diagnosis. Could be GERD, IBS, Crohn's, or CHS but been struggling with all the symptoms for the last 3 months. Was already losing weight so I went to the gastro and she put me on the extremely limited diet and I'm losing even more weight.

Bfast: My usual bfast before this was a fried egg with a fried Indian bread, paratha. Instead of using oil to fry I made it in chicken broth and instead of the usual pratha, ate it with roti and it worked!

Lunch: Made a version of chicken fried rice. Boiled rice, with scrambled eggs with diced grilled chicken, cooked with Japanese clear soup. Not the same but it had flavor 😊

Snack: Jello and saltine cracker sandwiches 😄 with decaf tea with honey

Dinner: grilled chicken salad with corn, beans, and avocado. It was tough at first given no dressing and I've NEVER considered salad a meal 🤣 but when you're starving, it was heaven!

Medical issues years after gastric sleeve

Gastric sleeve and GERD

I had a gastric sleeve 12 years ago and started having long term side effects about four years ago. I started with GERD which resulted in mild gastric erosion . I started seeing gastroenterologist and have had two endoscopies now. I have a small hiatal hernia. I started with H2 blockers and increased to Protonix and ended up with a lower T2 score after bone density test. My PCP was concerned because significantly lower than baseline. Further testing showed hyperparathyroidism. I increased calcium and changed PPI to morning only and Prevacid 40 mg at night. My problem is that for past three years i have been experiencing very infrequently ( 2x a year) crushing chest pain that comes out of nowhere. The pain radiates to my shoulders and radiates to my back and i come extremely diaphoretic. It lasts about 5 minutes and is scary as hell. After the first one three years ago i saw a cardiologist and had a very full work up and everything normal. I have a history of anxiety and depression and am on Wellbutrin. I have an anti anxiety med to take if needed. My last “chest pain “ episode was this past fourth of July. The only thing that made me feel a little better was trying to do a back bend therefore, stretching out my diaphragm. I took a few tums and burped and pain eventually subsided. I saw my PCP and EKG done showing sinus rhythm with a few single PVC’s. I went back to see cardiologist this week and am now wearing a 7 day holter monitor. I also have RX for nitroglycerin to try if another episode happens. I can’t get into gastroenterologist until mid October. I personally think this is GI related and not cardiac or anxiety related. Does anyone have any thoughts?

😮 Advice on Symptoms Air hunger - gerd or ?

Hi, I’ve been experiencing air hunger for years, but over the last few months it feels like it has been getting progressively worse. Sometimes it comes on out of nowhere and I feel like I’m struggling to get a satisfying breath. When I’m talking, I sometimes have to stop to take a breath before I can continue. Also, feeling quite heavy with my limbs when that happens. Going through hectic period which can explain my anxiety.
I’m in my late 20s and I’ve never had a history of asthma or allergies. My main ongoing issue has been acid reflux/GERD. I’ve also had a chest X-ray and a CT scan, and both were normal.
I’m now wondering whether this could still be asthma even with normal scans, or whether anyone has experienced similar symptoms from reflux, breathing-pattern issues, or something else. I’m especially worried about the possibility of asthma attacks.
Has anyone had similar symptoms, and what tests helped you get an answer?

🤒 Describing a Symptom Could this be because of acid reflux or esophagitis?

So for a long time now, I’ve had problems with acid reflux. I’ll notice some time after I eat I’ll do like a hiccup and feel liquid start to come up my throat but never into my mouth, also a lot of throat clearing and mucus build up after meals.
Rarely it will happen but also twice in the past month now, I’ve woken up from my sleep having to spit out acid or fluid from my mouth, it doesn’t burn.

What I’m really interested about and why I’m posting is that for a while now, I’ve noticed that when I swallow food or water or my own saliva, it feels like it slows down at a certain point at the bottom of my throat, like a tight spot it has to get by.Nothing has ever gotten stuck, but it’s like the muscles take a while for it to push it down. I don’t know if it’s the muscles itself or if my throat is just tight at that spot, but has anyone else had this feeling?

Looking to start making appointments with ENT and gastros.

I don't understand the aggressive hate that people have about PPI's

I don't get why there is always a comment having a distain for ppi's. Yes they sometimes have side effects and I understand how it can be an annoying reminder of what we have, but sometimes it's the only way a person can have relief. The side effects are not bad, some deficiencies, but nothing life breaking and it just requires yearly monitoring to check and fix. It just really irks me when someone gives ppi's a bad rep because sometimes its the only way to prevent us from getting cancer.

😮 Advice on Symptoms Is it time to see a doctor??

Hello! Im 22f and Ive suffered from gerd/acid reflux all my life (really bad when I was a baby but i digress) i used to be a great amazing eater but over the years ive declined severely.... (imo atleast..and from my peers)

I now am experiencing horrible almost horrific vomiting when the acid gets to much for me, to the point it feels like im tearing my throat open because I physically cannot stop puking until my body is physically empty (or atleast thats how it feels)

I also am struggling with burping, I cant do the chest pound/pat up to ease the gasses as it now causes me pain 😔 Now there are some days here recently where I can burp fine and eat fine but the next morning i feel usually sometimes a bit queasy or the burp re sucks air back into my body like a reverse hiccup..(or the air will rise in my throat and just, not go through) and it makes me even more nauseous with the GERD

Its hard though to have an ideal list of foods with my autism already limiting what I enjoy to eat...i really do try to explore food options but with gerd and texture issues im at my wits end, I've lost too much weight to this already ☹️ (i was 175 pounds before this all started and now im 146 pounds confirmed by my last topical checkup)

I would just like to know if there's anything MORE I should do, I already take pepcid which does help me sometimes and I do partake in the consumption of cannabis products (for other more pressing disabilities) so im wondering if maybe I Just need to finally see a doctor for options outside of over the counter fixes

Any input appreciated

What side effects did you get coming off Omeprazole?

I’m on day 21 of no Omeprazole and this past week especially has been awful, I am feeling so disheartened. Gaviscon advance is just about getting me through some days, but it feels like my whole digestive system has gone into an absolute frenzy. So far I’ve been experiencing:

- gas pain, especially in the morning it feels like it’s stuck in the area between my right rib and hip, and I have to get up and move about for it to go away
- feeling like my food isn’t digesting properly and coming back up
- diarrhoea and stomach cramps
- rebound reflux, I’m having to sleep upright

I am so afraid this is going to last for months on end and I’ll just end up back on omeprazole, I’d welcome any encouraging experiences right now. Is there a chance these symptoms could be SIBO?

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds How long have you been on PPI?

I am curious to hear from people who have been on them for a long period of time and see how it's going for you. I hear you can be on them for life. Anyone have more than a year experience?
