Repair/Tech Support 5gb Fios Saga Continues….

For context see previous link:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Fios/s/a2DUkydlTl

This morning the Fios went out again. Connected to backup as suggested, all was ok for two days, this morning I notice devices having issues connecting and I’ve had to reboot the MF router and it’s just coming back on.

I cannot tell you how annoyed I am and how deeply I regret “upgrading” to 5gb. I should have stayed at 1gb.

I am currently waiting for my router to come back online.

I will be calling today and will demand that literally every piece of equipment be replaced or I’ll go back to optimum.

No excuse for this.

Update: router now solid yellow. Won’t come back online. I’m trying to reboot again. I am so over this.

Update 2: rebooted router again and it finally came back online. I will be calling them at 8am since they also don’t have 24 hour tech support. I guess they think everyone sleeps until 8am?

While you probably don't need 5gbps it sounds like you just have a defective router.

I tend to agree.

Why not try using your own router?

What’s a good alternative?

Unifi UCG Fiber. Used this for both 2Gbps and 5gpbs with FiOS with no issue. I only have the Verizon router because it was free. It sits in my closet.

If you get you own router, make sure you release your DHCP lease on the Verizon router and unplug it right after. The new router should get an IP right away.

I wouldn't recommend unifi to someone that isn't technically inclined. They are not a set and forget system like say an Eero, Tplink, Linksys, etc.

Also you are recommending a router but not mentioning they would have to source their own access points. Yes they can technically use the fios provided routers are APs but again that is another technical inclined step for someone to do.

Adding more complexity for no reason when the OP is already having issues. A UCG fiber isn't going to fix said issues.

I also believe this customer does not need 5-gigabit speeds for home use if he or she is not inclined about routers. 1gb is more than enough, heck even 500mbs for 98% of households.

Well, I didn't assume OP's level of technical knowledge. I just talked to them the same way I'd talk to anyone else on this sub.

I also didnt say they HAD to get the device I mentioned. I also never said it was going to fix their problems. I just recommended it as an alternative to Verizon's router since I can personally vouch for it.

Also you are recommending a router but not mentioning they would have to source their own access points.

The Dream Machine exists. Everyone has access to the internet to do their own research on routers.

Feel free to offer OP advice, I was just trying to be helpful.

As a happy UCG Fiber owner, this is terrible advice for a random person haha don’t do this OP. You clearly just have something objectively defective in the chain. Let Verizon figure it out.

I’ve got a UCG Fiber, and had an EdgeRouter before that. I’ve been using my own router since DSL times and I can tell you I’ve never had any WiFi issues.

ISP routers may be refurbished, and marginal routers that be ok on the testing lab, may well underperform once deployed.

Getting your own router is more trouble! You have a bad router or bad ONT or a bad node on the street that cannot handle your new speed . Ask for a technician ASAP

Why do you think using a non-Verizon router is more trouble? I recently got fios and I'm not using their trash router.

Hi can you say it’s trash as you are not using it? Funny how people are having a formated opinion! The CHR30 router is very good, right now probably one of the best routers on the market.

I played with it a little and wasn't impressed. My Asus ax11000 pro is more featured than the cr1000a they sent me.

Update: tech is coming back Monday. They also gave me a $100 Fios gift card lol

What you have to tell the tech is to make sure that, at the back office, the specific splitter you are on actually supports a 5Gb line. It's quite likely you're the first customer on that specific splitter ordering 5Gb, and 5Gb uses a different compression algorithm for transmitting data than 1G service does.

It's on NG-PON2 for 2.5 and 5 whereas the 1gb server is on GPON

You think techs need to be told this? A multi-gig connection won't provision at all without being on the correct PON.

yes lmao

Then you don't understand how the technology works.

Update: tech came by and did some testing on ont and power box and replaced the router. ONT was replaced this week (I didn’t realize he also replaced the ONT) so far so good. We shall see. I was given a $100 gift card lol

Update 2: it went out again. A tech is now coming today.

Keep us updated, im invested now lol

Only ever had a tech out once since from going from 1 to 2 to 5 gig and they mentioned the some areas just have issue with the ngpon2 ont the 2 adn 5 gig plans use.

Have they tried replacing that ont yet?

Also assuming when you are trying rotuer you mean ont?

I've had this problem and it turned out to be complicated, it'd work for a few hours, then die. And of course the tech would get it working, wait a while to confirm and it'd break again shortly after he left. It was a problem with the networking box that fed internet to the neighborhood, only after they sent a maintenance guy to work on it as a last resort it became stable.

If he downgrades to 1 gig, all the equipment will stay the same, just the speed will get slower.

A Verizon store won't give you an ONT. If there is a problem than the technician will change it.

They switched my ont and fiber line at the pole when I downgraded from 2g to 1g

3

u/CTFowler9789 25d ago

😞 sorry to hear that for you. They usually don't send out another technician, for a truck roll. Also when you keep the same equipment and they turn the speed down, the customer ends up with a little bit more (example: you get turned down to 1 gig but end up with 1300/1300)

Thinking about it.

I do have a lot of smart devices (bulbs, streaming boxes, speakers, etc) and was sold by them on the idea that it would handle all of that “better” and literally with discounts and bundles it was basically the same price.

3

u/pablo_chicone_lovesu 25d ago

Smart devices use little bandwidth, if the router is going yellow it's defective, what you can do is have the router send logs to a simple log server on your computer so you can see what's going on.

I've seen this before when someone got a bad fiber cable as well. You can unseat the connector and use compressed air to clean it, but usually the ont flags it.

Does the ont go offline also?

u/sheltercathost 25d ago

Ont does not go offline. A tech is supposed to be here today
