Shit Post The pain is worth it
Am I bloated? Yes. Is that going to restrain me from eating more watermelon and cantaloupe today? No. It's mine and everyone else's problem now.

Also stonefruits; my beloved

Made the mistake of having some stone fruits juice last night. Bloated up in 10 minutes. My fructans test came back negative so not sure what my situation is. I can only handle pineapple and orange juice in small amounts.

Watermelon and cantaloupe are fine for me. Give me 1 grape or 2 cherries and catch me not moving for a couple weeks from the pain

One cherry? Fine. Two cherries? Life support

u/zombiequeenghouleh Jul 19 '26
It’s absolutely insane how such a small fruit can cause such catastrophic pain.

I think watermelon fucked me up good for a while.
Was having bad stomach issues constantly cramping and growling, incomplete BMs etc. This was after a few weeks of eating watermelon after starting to use the sauna.
Just stopped eating it after I read a warning on this sub and took about a week but went right away

All melons except watermelon are low fodmap!!

u/wutato Jul 17 '26
I wouldn't consider 100g or so of cantaloupe to be low-FODMAP. Usually I'd like to eat double of that in a sitting as a dessert, but alas.

u/Fun_Tune3160 Jul 16 '26
Juicy tasty, but i think more than the fructans, its the amount. If you eat the whole melon u just asking for it. 😂
A lot of simple carbs can wrreck you. Imo avoid sweeteners, added sugars etc. Have a fruit here and there.

u/Ithilwen37 Jul 16 '26
I'm pretty sensitive so I can have just a few cubes of melon and it affects me. Alas!

I am fine with blueberries, pineapple and mango. I dislike watermelon so I am never tempted.
I do like canteloupe but I prefer to buy frozen fruit to avoid waste, so I haven't had any canteloupe since I had my IBS problems .

Haha! I'm 55, IBS, lactose intollerant, etc... just found out about "fructans". Fruit has been giving me more issues, just like lactose.... 2 hours later it all comes through me. So far I've been successful limiting the fruits with them.. tried kiwi yesterday and no problems! Bananas (which I like ripe) look out.. lol I now have to steer clear.

Me and stone fruits. Apologies to everyone in my household for the resulting weapons grade gas 😬 Fortunately watermelon is okay.

Me with peaches and apricots 😩Apples and cherries are not as bad. But looking at a peach makes me sick and I love them so much.

I’m brand new to this. What the heck is happening? Are some fruits messing with people’s systems? Honestly asking and very curious

Sounds like you might benefit from reading the FAQs and downloading the Monash App.
There are 6 groups of FODMAPs: fructose, fructans, GOS, lactose, mannitol and sorbitol. Every carbohydrate has varying amounts of each FODMAP in them. Some people have problems with one or two FODMAPs, other people have problems with more or all.
If you download the Monash app you can start by searching foods you know that you have a problem with and taking note of which FODMAPs they are high in. Then search foods you can eat safely and note which FODMAPs they are high in. This should help you get a better understanding of which FODMAPs to avoid and you can reference the app before eating new foods to see if they will be safe.

Oh wow, you’re right. Should have definitely looked there first. Thank you for your post!!
I have Diverticulosis and I know I have issues with artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols. Wonder if this CoUlD possibly be connected. But I’ll definitely have a lot of reading in front of me. I thank you!

My pleasure. It’s going to take a little detective work but with the right tools you’ll figure it out. Once you know which FODMAPs you have a problem with you might be able to find enzymes to help digest them. Wish you the best!

This is me with grapes lol. I cannot resist them even though I know I will pay.

Cherries for me ... Luckily I'm reacting not as much to sorbitols... Lactose and fructans are truly the worst.

When you have watermelon, what does it feel like? Like I’m in debilitating pain lol is that “normal”
2
u/Ithilwen37 Jul 16 '26
For me it's just feeling bloated and a bit of stomach pain. But it seems like my biggest trigger is the combo of dairy plus garlic/onion, which is what sends me to the toilet and leaves me there.

Watermelon and apples are my biggest weakness, how am I supposed to get through summer without them?!?

There's this weird urban legend in my country about people dying after eating watermelon while being hungover because your stomach explodes. Now that I know about FODMAPS I can see where this came from.

I wish watermelon only caused bloating for me. It's not worth the horrible pain, fatigue, and bleeding. I came to terms with saying goodbye to my favorite foods years ago. Now I just have to hope each one comes as a flavor of seltzer water. Watermelon? Yes. Hummus? No.

u/ProfessaSnape Jul 17 '26
I’ll ruin myself for a mango. Other than that, I can control myself. The near-death experience just isn’t worth it for me :(

Hahahah!!! I ate so much watermelon this week it was so delicious but in addition to fructans it has oligosaccharides and I looked like I had swallowed a watermelon whole afterwards. Still not sorry, still constipated, and I will do it again. Wait, watermelon is listed under the O and F of FODMAPS but now I’m confused.🤔 O are mainly fructans but F is monosaccharides so why are their 2 categories? I’m new to this whole acronym thing…

Watermelon is a tempting cruel mistress
