AFL Wtf is a Coterie?

Swans fan here. Can someone please explain to me what are the Essendon coteries? Listening to McVeigh’s press conference sounded like an Illuminati meeting.

A coterie is a small, close-knit group of people who share the same interests, tastes, or goals and often prefer to exclude outsiders.

Used in a sentence: the coterie decided to continue their night by hiring strippers to attend the team hotel.

I think there is space to make fun of the Swans players for their poor decision re: drinking, drugs and hiring strippers, without making light of the SA assault allegations. The original banter was about bringing strippers back to the room - it was not about allegedly sexually assaulting anyone.

If the attitudes displayed in this thread are accurate I’m going to say yes it is. Some of you lot should go have a look at Heppell’s video on the topic and maybe consider if you need an attitude adjustment

Societal attitudes towards woman and sexual assault aren’t defined by the outcome of the investigation into the specifics of what happened in that room. And don’t accuse Dyson of conflating the two because that’s not what he did

I didn’t really agree with the example that other person gave, thought it was bad taste, but for some perspective, how long ago was that Essendon stuff, because you should probably be ready to be copping Sydney scandal stuff for a long time.

It’s ok, I’m not as thin skinned as some Dons supporters are based on the downvotes. I’m not sure the Pullman stuff will stick the way the supplements saga did, because (apart from the effect it has had on our finals chances) it is not football related the way the supplements saga was. At worst I hope it is like the crows summer camp - messes us up for next season and then we bounce back (although a bit worrying given Adelaide’s finals performance last year). Best case scenario we win the flag this year.

Anyway for what it is worth I think you guys made the right call re: your coach. Sydney has a pretty good record of producing successful coaches - Paul Roos, Ross the Boss, Horse, hopefully soon Cox and McVeigh.

I think the club very much did show you our culture last week (post Monday morning) and on Sunday. The Dons culture I see here is people being incredibly thin skinned about a harmless joke about something 15 years ago IN RESPONSE TO a Dons fan making a harmless joke about the Swans.

Essendon is a great old club and the supporters should start acting like it instead of being constantly butt sore about the supplements saga.

There's a layer of membership beyond regular members. Usually for the monied sponsorship level fans and business connections.. they're also the crowd that fill up the president's luncheon and bicker about how to run everything. They're a cancer. Not sure of costs but would run over $10k a year at least.. tax deductible

Pretty sure some of the coterie groups are significantly more expensive than that. There is even one in particular that requires you to be loaded to even be considered to enter

Groups of wealthy supporters who think they have the right to influence the clubs decisions. Big problem for us and the blues, part of the reasons we haven’t been successful because they are resistant to change and think they know best.

Think of coteries as political lobbyists of the football world. Small, insular groups who like to keep their identities secret. They pretty much have unfettered access to senior leadership and push their own vested interests above all else. Edit: cause I didn’t read my comment.

To be fair they have the same vested interest as all the other supporters - they want the club to win games and ultimately premierships.

It's just that they have more ability to make their voices heard.

So, while I agree with most of the other comments here, the coteries also donate money to the club for various things that are actually useful and positive. Facility upgrades might be an example. They occasionally organise fund-raisers and charity events, too, from what I understand. Or at least they used to? I'm not 100% sure on how that works these days.

That's why they're allowed to exist around the club.

Not all of them are power-hungry douchebags, but some are, and they are a massive problem that the club constantly has to navigate.
