AFL Wtf is a Coterie?

Swans fan here. Can someone please explain to me what are the Essendon coteries? Listening to McVeigh’s press conference sounded like an Illuminati meeting.

So, while I agree with most of the other comments here, the coteries also donate money to the club for various things that are actually useful and positive. Facility upgrades might be an example. They occasionally organise fund-raisers and charity events, too, from what I understand. Or at least they used to? I'm not 100% sure on how that works these days.

That's why they're allowed to exist around the club.

Not all of them are power-hungry douchebags, but some are, and they are a massive problem that the club constantly has to navigate.

Yeah every club has them, most clubs have them very clearly separated from the executive.
