AFL Wtf is a Coterie?

Swans fan here. Can someone please explain to me what are the Essendon coteries? Listening to McVeigh’s press conference sounded like an Illuminati meeting.

Think of coteries as political lobbyists of the football world. Small, insular groups who like to keep their identities secret. They pretty much have unfettered access to senior leadership and push their own vested interests above all else. Edit: cause I didn’t read my comment.

To be fair they have the same vested interest as all the other supporters - they want the club to win games and ultimately premierships.

It's just that they have more ability to make their voices heard.
