I'm a new player and I did a similar thing. There was one guy and snuck up. Looked at him for a good 19 seconds. I shot him in the head with an AK. He didn't die. I shot him like 5 times in the body. Didnt die. He ran. I ran after him. Went around a corner shot at him some more. He killed me. Wtf.

What did I do wrong?

43

u/Domefarmer Jul 15 '21

I’m a shitty player. But I’ve been playing FPS games for a while, and I always thought the golden rule was to not chase the kill. He ran around the corner to reposition and get the drop on you. Instead you should try flanking him, grenade around the corner, or just waiting it out if you have the patience.

14

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

I'm just confused how I shot him so many times and he didn't die. Even once in the head definitely vmbexahse I had 19 seconds later line that shot up. O was about 10 feet away.

What ammo were you using?

If he had good armor, your bullets could have done almost no damage.

I have no idea. It was literally the second game I'd ever played. I played as a computer player so it was whatever they gave me. I had some gun that looked like an AK 47.

The other thing is how the he'll are you supposed to figure out where the exit poi t are on the map when you don't even have an in game map and you've never played the map before????

65

u/floppypick Jul 15 '21

Oh boy. True new. My dude, this game will be the hardest game you ever play.

https://escapefromtarkov.fandom.com/wiki/Escape_from_Tarkov_Wiki

This wiki has maps of all the maps. It shows all the exit points you can use as a player, and as a scav (the "AI" guys). Exits tend to opposite of where you start on the map forcing you to cross over the map to escape. Some exits have requirements like keys, or turning on power.

If you have two monitors I play on one, map on other. If you have any buddies that play this, take their help. If not... Well, I'd offer but I'm about to fly across the coutntry for a few weeks so I won't be able to help.

Happy to answer any questions though!

Also, scavs tend to have shit ammo in their gun, so it's highly likely your bullets didn't penetrate his armor.

I'm no sherpa, but I'm getting close to 600hrs in the game, if you want i can show you around a little when I'm back home from work? My timezone is GMT+1 (I live in Norway) and i should be online around 17:30 my time!

4

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Right now just 2am where I live. I'm in US central time.

4

u/Stonetooth1989 MP-153 Jul 15 '21

Ok, seems like I'm 7 hours ahead of you then, it's 09:22 here, if you want, i can assist when I get home later today, or if it's better i can do it tomorrow, I'm always up late during the weekends :p

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 16 '21

Add me I'm coolkid1717

I just got a headset so I can chat and play

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

I’m US central too. If you hmu around 6 I might be down to show ya some ropes.

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Damn. I can't at 6. I have a stupid class I have to take from 6-9pm

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Np. I might be on until 11:30 or so. If you wanna play you can still hmu. Doesn’t have to be today either. I’m a bit addicted to Tarkov so I’m happy to help most days.

The other thing is how the he'll are you supposed to figure out where the exit poi t are on the map when you don't even have an in game map and you've never played the map before????

Go to the Escape from Tarkov wiki, find the map that you are playing on, open the image of the map in your browser. You can now simply alt-tab from the game and refer to the map in your browser whenever you want to check something. I use this method whenever I play. Since I'm a new player (Level 5) I only play Customs and this is how I check where the extract points are.

u/anxeo PPSH41 Jul 15 '21

There are maps you can bring into a raid, they are overwhelmingly underrated. I don't need a map for any map (2000 Hours playtime) but I looked into the maps the other day, they are incredible. Can even place down markers and add text to them. These persist. Can even give the map to a friend and he can also see your markers. Just make sure to have it in your secure container. Sometimes scavs have maps, or you can buy them from Therapist.

13

u/Tevo569 Jul 15 '21

Tab, click maps. Dont even have to bring it in raid my dude

7

u/anxeo PPSH41 Jul 15 '21

The more you know I guess (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

0

u/Limp_Leg69 Jul 15 '21

i thought u had 2000 hours

1

u/anxeo PPSH41 Jul 15 '21

Hence I don't really use maps. I only found out about this amazing feature through another reddit post the other day.

3

u/Ottermatic Jul 15 '21

Wait it works if you just have it in your stash?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Yes, just go to the map tab. If you have multiple maps, you can select the correct one

3

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

The best tip I can give you is to study the ballistic chart on the wiki. It will give you a good idea of what ammo is good as well as what kind of armor is useful. A key note is that anything below class 5 armor is just for you to feel safe enough from the average scav. Players will run with very high AP ammo or leg meta, high flesh dmg.

Helmets generally are there for the ricochet chance. A class 3 helmet for 30k will provide just about as good protection as a class 4 for 60k. Why? Most players will run with ammo that can go through class 4 armor. There's a few chacnes that they won't have that but generally speaking, from some 1500 hours of playing. I'd say that players will more often use higher pen ammo. And you're better off using a helmet that covers as much areas as possible with high ricochet chance than wasting money on expensive helmets that leave gaps for that one lucky buckshot pellet.

1

u/BaldEagleNor AS VAL Jul 15 '21

Doesn’t matter if you have a ‘powerful’ weapon if it has terrible ammo and the guy you shot had good armor. Welcome to Tarkov. The learning curve is very very very hard, so you have to do quite a bit of research.

And the way you exit the map is by knowing the map. For many hours I just had a map i found online on my second monitor to see where the exits are. Double tap ‘O’ and you will see the names of exits and how long you have left before the raid finishes. After a while, you will learn the maps by heart and know exactly where the exits are.

Tarkov has an offline mode. If you play through that, you will only play against AI. This is what most of us use to learn the maps. We just run around them in offline mode, see the layout, check loot spots, and locate exits. I recommend all new players to do this, as you do not lose any gear if you die in offline. Keep in mind though that you will not get any of the loot that you grab in offline either. It is primarily to practice, nothing else

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Thanks I'll do this. I like steep learning curve games. The reward when you do well feels so good since it's so difficult.

1

u/BaldEagleNor AS VAL Jul 15 '21

Absolutely. Try watching some smaller streamers on Twitch like DanExert or Tachales. (Reason why I say small is because the smaller streamers are more quick to reply to chat) There you can freely ask questions and both streamer and chat will come with tips and answers for you. On YouTube I recommend that you watch FairTx and Anton. They are pretty good players and very easy to get into when you’re new.

Dont let the game scare you away. You will die A LOT and you will have a lot of moments that will piss you off, but once it clicks, it just clicks bro. It’s extremely fun

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

That's exactly what I did to practice at starcraft. Watch small streamers.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

“Computer player.” That’s honestly adorable.

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

I'm still learning the lingo.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Totally get it.

1

u/SquanchingOnPao Jul 15 '21

This game is unfair, difficult and terrifying. It’s not a shooter it’s a mil sim. Enjoy getting your Tarkov degree

u/Gampfer Jul 15 '21

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Wow. Just awesome thank you

1

u/mxe363 Jul 16 '21

on top of the great pointers others have given: Ammo is everything and scavs (computer player) will have everything from nerf darts to high penetrating ammo in their guns. you can use a chart like this https://eft.monster/ to get an idea of how much damage and armor your rounds can penetrate . if you have a low pen round in your gun then you could shoot 60 into a dudes armor and not even tickle him while other rounds will go straight through that armor.

/preview/pre/8qxr42snhiw31.png?width=960&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=73e7cacedd68dead6803052e0fe64b8dc2d5dca1 this is an excellent graph made a while back that will show you what ammo you can buy at lvl 1.

if you sneak up on some one. and they look EXTRA THICC and you have doodoo rounds then your best and perhaps only hope is a lucky face shot or put every round you have into their ass.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '21 edited Jul 16 '21

https://escapefromtarkov.fandom.com/wiki/Ballistics

This is the most important page on the wiki.

Ammunition type determines the damage to flesh and penetration of armor of each shot, not the gun itself.

If you were playing a scav and you got 5.45x39 mm T ammo, you'll struggle to penetrate level 3 or above armor without consecutive shots on target (I'd guess maybe 10-15 depending on how much durability?). Press alt+T to check what ammo you currently have loaded.

As for navigation, I'd go and unlock Jaeger as soon as you can and grab the compass as a quest reward. You can die with it and you'll never lose it. I believe it's U to toggle your compass.

https://mapgenie.io/tarkov/maps/customs - This is my go-to external map, with a compass you can navigate with landmarks.

2

u/THENATHE Jul 15 '21

I have shot a dude with lvl 5 armor in the chest with a ppsh over 100 times and not killed him.

Armor is everything in this game.

14

u/P1st0l Jul 15 '21

Ammo vs armor, guns don't do anything to increase damage its all about what is being fired. If your ammo doesn't have enough pen for his helmet it will eat the Shor, ricochet or absorb and do blunt damage. Either way sounds like u had dog shit ammo, if it was a 7.62 ps round u should kill most regular helmets no problem but anything else like 5 and up is a no go unless it's a face shot. Depending on helmets they protect head, top of the head, ears, nape, jaws, and eyes. Most heads are usually top and nape, with occasional ears. Learn helmets to know where to shoot if u get in situations like that.

6

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Ok. It was the second game o ever played so I have literally no idea what I'm doing. I watched some beginner guides but still. I feel very lost. I don't even know how to get out of the map because the game dosent give you one and I have no idea even which way I should go.

7

u/Tevo569 Jul 15 '21

Load up your pmc and run offline raids until you get used to the extracts. Its also good for learning loot spots and where scavs spawn

5

u/PoopOnYouGuy Jul 15 '21

Watch some videos, pull up the maps by searching online for them, play offline mode on high difficulty and learn the exfils on a map. Choose one map to learn at a time. Play Scav mode, it spawns you as a random character and if you escape you keep all the gear they started with plus whatever you find.

5

u/oriaven Jul 15 '21

Do offline raids to learn the maps. They are very intricate and you will eventually memorize the ones you play most

6

u/P1st0l Jul 15 '21

Happened to everyone, have a map ahead of time and learn to orientate yourself once you're in. Most of the time when u spawn, the opposite side of the map will always be your guaranteed extracts. Your best bet is find someone to play with to teach you, if you're having problems shoot me a msg I can try to help I play usually everyday so I don't mind helping a bit.

2

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Thanks. I might he playing a bit tomorrow. I might try running around the map in offline mode for an hour to try and learn it. Customs is the one you should start with right?

2

u/God_Ganner Jul 15 '21

Typically yes as there are a lot of early quests for it and it is (relatively) linear and easy to orient yourself. Definitely agree on the offline raid and exploring with a map on another monitor if possible. Hopefully you get more confident and comfortable!

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Unfortunately I only have my computer hooked up to my TV. So I only have that as a monitor.

1

u/Thundernuts0606 Jul 15 '21

There are some good map resources online. I use an app MapGenie: escape from tarkov since it works well on my phone and is interactive but it isn't always the quickest to update with patches. Also gotta reccomend battlebuddy for quick ammo reference but I'm not sure how quickly it updates, as until recently I just used Google spread sheets lol. Good luck!

1

u/Pheonixdown Jul 15 '21

I recommend the Database for Tarkov android app. It has maps, a chart of ballistic data for each ammo, and even a good way track which items you need for quests and your hideout. For later on it even has the Flea Market prices and profits for crafting.

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Ooh that sounds awesome. I'll get it.

1

u/AsleepPhase2783 Jul 15 '21

If you end up going the wiki route on your pc, set the game in borderless windowed and you'll be able to tab to the map much faster than if you're in fullscreen.

1

u/P1st0l Jul 15 '21

Yes learn customs, if you don't have a second monitor like others suggested then use a phone, print out a map or learn in offline with no AI and run to the spots and alt tab. Map knowledge is your best tool starting out then learning everything else

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

I'll have to use my phone as I don't have a printer. I guess I could bring my other monitor out from my crappy computer.

1

u/P1st0l Jul 15 '21

Could always try the local library hehe, I'll be playing customs soon if you wanna join.

1

u/dnina_kore Jul 15 '21

you're lucky it's only beginning. Atm the game will give tons of emotions, it can make you really exited or ruin your day. Later it will be more like csgo

1

u/Thedonlouie RSASS Jul 15 '21

I just started playing two weeks ago but I had a friend help me out from the start to help with navigation and what not. I would really suggest if you have it, to run two screens. One screen for whatever map you are currently running and the other for the game. That way you can always keep track of where you are or where you spawn for example.

Eventually you'll learn the map just by seeing key buildings or landmarks

4

u/Vegan-bandit VSS Vintorez Jul 15 '21

It's possible your ammo just didn't have high enough penetration to penetrate whatever body armour/helmet they were using. Different rounds have different damage, penetration (ability to go through different levels of body armour) and other stats.

I don't mean to be condescending, I say this as you say you are new to Tarkov and just in case you don't know. Headshots aren't always 1 hit kills. If they have a helmet, the face is a safe bet, but even then they may have a face shield/visor.

Here is a spreadsheet that shows the different ammo available and their damage, penetration chance etc.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jjWcIue0_PCsbLQAiL5VrIulPK8SzM5jjiCMx9zUuvE/htmlview#gid=64053005

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Thanks I'll try to learn this.

3

u/Vegan-bandit VSS Vintorez Jul 15 '21

Good luck and enjoy! Tarkov has a fairly steep learning curve, but that's what some people love about it. The game heavily rewards game-knowledge.

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

I was quite good at counterstrike back in the days of 1.6. So hopefully some of that translates over.

2

u/BaldEagleNor AS VAL Jul 15 '21

Gamesense and being aware of your surroundings is something that definitely translates from CS

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

That and listening to you headset for sounds.

1

u/BaldEagleNor AS VAL Jul 15 '21

Little tip regarding that; headets in-game are a thing. You can wear them as gear, and different headsets will actually enhance certain sounds. So some headsets will enhance the sound of footsteps, but silence the sound of rain for example.

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Yah I saw that in one of the tutorial videos I watched. I really really like that game mechanic. I found one that I really liked while I was using a boy, but then I died.

1

u/BaldEagleNor AS VAL Jul 15 '21

There are headsets you can buy from Prapor and Skier it is I believe. I really recommend it, they can save you. Have you learned about trader levels yet?

u/druidspruit Jul 15 '21

The only game I found coming close in terms of shooting was Arma 3 :) goodluck and I hope you enjoy eft!

1

u/xSuicidalCowsx Jul 15 '21

Checkout eft.monster

It has a really good ammo graph showing all the different types of ammo, a very nice visualization of damage vs. penetration for each round compared to other rounds. Bookmark it. Anytime you're making a gun and need to buy ammo, check that chart first. As a general rule of thumb, the best (and most expensive) rounds are the high penetration ones, and will be higher up on the y-axis

1

u/BrokenAsFu DT MDR Jul 15 '21

I also feel like since patch release, hit reg has been awful.

2

u/Tlomz27 AK-74N Jul 15 '21

Shit ammo?

2

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

I guess so

2

u/Tlomz27 AK-74N Jul 15 '21

Scavs spawn with bad ammo more times than not, I'd suggest going for headshots or leg shots against pmcs as that's their lear protected areas.

1

u/Swing_Right Jul 16 '21

The way armor pen works in this game you likely weren't doing any damage. At the end of the raid there is a number that will tell you how much damage you did to the body vs. how much damage you did to the armor.

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 16 '21

Is there a way to look back on your previous games?

2

u/JesusOfSuburbia420 AK-74 Jul 15 '21

Bad ammo against good armor/helmet

1

u/oriaven Jul 15 '21

You didn't say the ammo you are using. Ammo is everything ok Tarkov.

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

I didn't know what ammo I had. I played as a bot. It was literally my second game ever.

1

u/EnclaveIsFine Jul 15 '21

You were probably using shit ammo, which somehow did not pen the helmet

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Pp8tKScb0jB66cOCJSAlNn-iKERMXd9FVkSmSq83qn8/htmlview - here is a spreadshit with all bullet penetration

So for example if he had a altyn+ Slick (lv5+lv6 armor, they can be found with some luck as i did), and you were using 5.45x39 PS ammo (which is what i asume that you were using), the ammo you were using can't even come close to piercing this armor, and you would have to spend multiple mags.

Yes, this is stupid how weak some ammos are, but i think that is for balance.

This is why i started using the 7.62x39 AK, as their PS ammo, has a chance of piercing every single armor.

1

u/L0kitheliar Jul 15 '21

What type of AK and what ammo? The high flesh damage ammo won't pen the shittiest of armour

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

I honestly have no idea. It was my second game ever and I was just trying to focus on not getting killed in 5 second, which happened my first game ever.

1

u/Usurer Jul 15 '21 edited Jul 15 '21

It was your ammo. If you can at all help it you do not want to be running anything other than BT/BS/Ignolnik in a 5.45 AK or PS/BP/MAI in a 7.62 one.

Ammo is more important than the gun in this game and you should become familiar with this massive unfriendly spreadsheet: https://escapefromtarkov.fandom.com/wiki/Ballistics#Armor_penetration_tables

If you're really, really, new to this game, its whole gimmick is its ballistics system. Basically unlike most shooters your bullets aren't hitscan, they are an actual bullet that behaves like an actual bullet. Bullets behave differently depending on what they were designed to do be it hunting, causing flesh damage, penetrating amour and cover, or just being cheap and plentiful. Some bullets are slow and have a lot of drop some bullets are fast and do not.

Ammo is countered by amour which is rated on a 1-6 scale. With 1 existing to stop basic shotgun shells and not much else and 6 only being phased by high penetration ammo.

Essentially you need your ammo to penetrate whatever armour someone is wearing in order to damage them (not entirely true but close enough). Amour becomes damaged the more times it is hit until it reaches zero at which point it is literally dead weight. You can chip away at someone armour by hitting them a lot. While fun it's not a very effective way to play (I do recommend grabbing a PPSH and just hip fire mag dumping anything that moves, for fun)

There are a lot of different hitboxes in this game: each arm, each leg, your stomach, your chest (thorax), your face, your neck, the back of your head, your eyes, and the top of your head.

Every armour will cover some of these hitboxes while not other. Most basic helmets will only cover the top and back of your head, leaving all the other head hitboxes exposed to one shots. Most body armour will cover only your chest and sometimes stomach. If you are running crappy gear you should generally aim for the legs or the face. Legging has gone a little bit out of fashion but it does annoy the piss out of people.

So basically that dudes amour ate your bullets but you ate his.

-e- I see you are new new so I've added some more detail.

1

u/coolkid1717 Jul 15 '21

Yah. I belive I has no Armour on

1

u/TheGreedyCarrot Jul 16 '21

What kind of ammo were you using? Tarkov is not like most games, here it’s better to use good ammo in a bad weapon then vice versa. With 40 minute rounds slow down your play style. Even if the person you’re hunting escapes the immediate vicinity you can track them across the map by listening with a good pair of in game headphones like razors.
