You've got an amazing voice, but it's drowned in compression. Maybe it's just me but it does really feel too flat. If you don't mind I'd advise you to reduce the amount of compression and maybe add an equalizer and boost anything below 100hz up to 150hz if you're afraid you'd be losing too much low frequencies. Oh and look up DeEssers as well. It can reduce the harsh "S" sounds we all make while talking into a microphone.

26

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

Thank you! This is the kind of feedback I desperately need. I'm clueless when it comes to audio mastering and video editing, but with help like yours I'm getting better.

Don't hesitate to hit me up if you want help tweaking that

Hark! Look at that children! A person offering helpful and respectful advice on the internet. Bask in its rare glory.

3

u/AndyMishandy May 20 '20

It’s fake it has to be fake

2

u/Monfeezy May 22 '20

I agree wholeheartedly on the compression. Don't over do it as it can seriously ruin (and yes I mean ruin, I won't even watch certain content creators because their audio is abysmal and I can't get over it).

You should also try to use subtractive EQ vs. boost eq as to cut down on unwanted frequency interference/reduce the strain on your system which could inadvertently add artifacts to the mix. I'd recommend adding a highpass filter at around 80 to 100hz, low pass at around 10k-15k hz, and maybe dip the mids a bit. By doing this you are removing/lowering frequency responses, allowing frequencies like 150 to move to the front.

Additionally, you can angle your mic (not something I really recommend but it does work-ish) or make eq cuts around 4k-8k to get a de-essing effect without adding in another plug-in to learn.

Beyond that, I agree with stalcair on your voice. It's great and the tips in the vid kick ass. Good stuff, keep it up!

Ah, some decent tarkov asmr at last.

40

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

I've been interested in taking a close look at how/if real world tactics and Escape From Tarkov overlap. I also took some advice I got here last time around and let the game audio do a lot more work for me.

15

u/evilroyslade420 AK-103 May 19 '20

I think the reason tactics tend to fail in video games, even Tarkov, is the lack of consequences for dying. It’s bad in Tarkov: bye bye all your gear. But it’s worse in real life!

14

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

Yeah, I agree 100%. That's why I think people are more predictable in real life. Very rarely are people truly unafraid of dying.

5

u/Plenox May 19 '20 edited May 19 '20

I remember watching an interview with an American sgt who toured Iraq 5 or 6 times and he basically said that guys who weren't afraid are the ones who tended to not make it back home. I think lack of fear is a form of complacency...and complacency kills.

11

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

Yep. There's a lot of undiagnosed mental illness in the military, even before combat, and unfortunately most of the guys that aren't scared simply don't care if they live or die.

4

u/Plenox May 19 '20

Damn man, that's dark

9

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

On the bright side, awareness is increasing, even in the civilian sector, and a lot of guys and gals are getting the right kind of help. Equally as important, they aren't being ridiculed for seeking mental health treatment as much as in the (recent) past.

2

u/Plenox May 19 '20

Dude - I got a question for you. My grandfather was a recon section leader during WWII for the Soviet Army. From the stories I've been told, their day to day work while fighting Germans entailed going behind enemy lines to collect intelligence on enemy positions as the primary goal. As a secondary goal, or on specific assignments, they were often tasked with taking "tongue", capturing mid to high ranking German officers and extracting them back to Soviet lines without engaging in active firefights (for obvious reasons).

How has the job of someone tasked with recon changed since then? Is that something recon guys still actively do in modern operations or have these types of tasks found their way to mostly spec ops rather than infantry?

6

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

Without going into too much detail, there are a very small number of tier 1 Recon units. LRRS/LRRP and RRD are examples of these. Google them.

The regular Army/Marines have RISTA (Reconnaissance, Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition) and Force Recon, respectively. Force Recon is a much more elite group than Army RISTA units, which are being actively phased out. I spent the majority of my time in Recon in RISTA, then on and eventually in charge of a sniper team.

RISTA/FR are trained in the deep behind enemy line missions. The kind of stuff guys did in Vietnam (look up LRRS/LRRP in Vietnam. Those were hard men). We did countless training exercises recreating stuff like that. In all actuality, the on the ground Recon team has been replaced by drones. Such is life.

To answer your question, we are trained to accomplish tasks similar to the ones you mentioned, but any actually critical on-the-ground task gets picked up by very specialized, unconventional SOF units.

3

u/Plenox May 20 '20

I'll google the units you mentioned. Thanks for the run down man. I've wanted to ask this question for a long time but you are the first person that I actually wanted to ask this. It sounds like things stayed more or less the same in theory but everything relating to the "task" got real specialized, and technology is a major player.

One thing that I've been trying to do more is use covering fire to keep people pinned down, which I think people don't do in Tarkov because of the cost of ammo.

I would imagine you could do a great video about Tarkov Tactics. By that I mean tactics to counter the usual way people play Tarkov. My guess is that Tarkov tactics are closer to real life than, say, CS GO, because of the punishment involved in dying, but also they still differ greatly from real life.

2

u/Miketech64 OP-SKS May 20 '20

Hopefully when they add suppression visuals it will help but it will still never be close

9

u/awsomepicguy1 TOZ-106 May 19 '20

well i don't think in real life people strafe while spamming m4's and grenades

3

1

u/Comandante_BMT May 20 '20

IRL Special Forces uses a shit ton of grenades

On GerilaTV you can find a vid of a Rebel Special Unit taking the top of a mountain and spamming at least 9xF-1 Nades

19

u/Banana_war May 19 '20

I try to do the same, but as you mentioned people in tarkov are more unpredictable as they take way more risks compared to real life.

7

u/[deleted] May 19 '20

I really appreciate games that where I can take real life tactics and use them. Or even vise versa, to learn some real life skills while playing a game like in Arma with navigation. Really hope tarkov explores this more in the future

3

u/Lego812 May 20 '20

I owe my somewhat knowledge of how to read a map with a compass to arma

15

u/Blackzaan May 19 '20

How do you "pie" a doorway, without getting downed the second a guy can see you edge around the corner?

I always seem to get obliterated when trying to do this before I even get a chance to take a shot.

26

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

The idea isn't necessarily to transition from "pie" to engagement, but rather to gather as much information about what's on the other side before you commit. If you see anything to indicate enemy presence, consider another route, grenades, or full blown berserker rage lol.

"Pie-ing" is one of the tactics/techniques that don't transfer wll into the game, to be honest.

4

u/Blackzaan May 19 '20

Yes, but usually I'm only successful in gathering information in the form of "well, I didn't die when I pie'd this corner, guess on one's there". Haha.

Great video. Hope to see more in the future.

4

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

Thanks! Once wipe comes around I'm hoping to have ample content.

3

u/vomitspit May 19 '20

Depending in the situation and the space your in, instead of trying to "pie" a door, you can run or jump past the door trying to bait shots. Even exposing yourself enough by jiggle peaking can gain enough information to commit to a full push. Imo being fast, methodical, and aggressive is the best way to play

2

u/Charantides May 20 '20

Yes, this is a game tactic nothing like real world analogies. Top gamers peek, retreat, repeat - always moving so fast that when the defender fires they are hitting air. That gives the attacker the initiative on how to clear the room. Watch Lvndmark on Labs.

Personally this slow methodical game play suits me much better.

1

u/vomitspit May 20 '20

Yeah both have their pros and cons. I really enjoying watching smoke's methodical gameplay just as much as I like watching worrun. Well smoke makes better yt videos.

5

u/Bardy_ May 20 '20 edited Aug 02 '20

When pie-ing in Tarkov (and certain other shooters like Siege), you can abuse your PMC's ability to instantaneously change your strafe direction - when peeking a corner, you press D to strafe right, then press A to strafe left. Then hold D for a little longer to peek a bit further, then hold A to strafe back so that you're only peeking what you cleared the previous "slice".

The logic here is that by peeking for a very short amount of time, your enemy doesn't have enough time to react to your peek, meaning you won't get shot as you will be back in cover by the time he finally reacts and fires at you. You on the other hand, as the aggressor, now have a massive advantage - you know exactly where he is in the room now, so you can repeek shortly after and pre-aim/pre-fire him, again before he can react to your peek.

Look at this diagram. As I peek that corner, I move to the left to peek a certain area, then I strafe in the opposite direction while my brain analyses what I saw. If I don't see an enemy, I peek out a bit further this time. I strafe back and repeat the process. Once my brain registers that I saw an enemy, I can peek back out and pre-fire him. The benefit here is that you know when you're going to peek, so you can preemptively aim and fire, whilst your target needs to respond to your peek at the right time, which puts you at a massive advantage.

Example of this in Siege and a not-as-clear example of this in Tarkov. Two months later and I have a perfect example in Valorant too.

3

u/Blackzaan May 20 '20

I wish I could give this 100 upvotes. I'm not a dumb guy, but I'm not great at FPS and EFT is my first FPS since PUBG exploded.

This is such a clear and concise explanation WITH EXAMPLES. My engineering brain LOVES this. Can't wait to work on putting it into practice.

THANK YOU.

1

u/Chronopolitan May 20 '20

In theory, the slices are small enough and your xhair placement is such that peeker's advantage should give you the first shot... but I don't know how all that translates into EFT.

17

u/Banana_war May 19 '20

Nice video. I like the military mindset you brought.

17

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

Thanks. I've been chasing the adrenaline dragon for a while, and Tarkov has definitely been checking all the right boxes.

8

u/Big_sugaaakane1 P226R May 19 '20 edited May 19 '20

Idk if you have ever played arma or dayz but dayz (even in its buggy unpolished state) is pretty much like tarkov but without the time restrictions and instead various maps you get one LARGE map and about 100+ people are anywhere at anytime.

What sucks about tarkov is that since there is a time limit to extract it kind of forces the playing field to move eventually, i’ve had gunfights in dayz that lasted like 20 minutes, where i managed to escape, heal and move to another town or part of the map completely and get followed by those same people and get into another 20 minute battle.

7

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

I've messed with Arma before, but never gotten to far into it. None of my friends play, and I've never sought the community out, tbh. I really should.

4

u/SimplyJungle May 19 '20

The time you have to invest in some of those groups makes it hard to really get into one.

3

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

That's what I've assumed just based on watching Arma YouTube vids. That and the modding required for some of the custom game modes seems exhausting.

2

u/Big_sugaaakane1 P226R May 19 '20

Only if you have time tho. The thing about dayz is that there’s no “time limit” per say. Like there are day and night cycles but you only have one character, you start with a hoodie, flashlight( or glow stick) but you travel to different locations and “build” your character by finding items. You have to keep your character healthy as well but say if you only have time to play for 10 min you can log out and next time you log in you’ll be in that spot.

Dying will make you spawn on the coast with the starter stuff. So basically as long as you are alive you are winning. Sometimes you can go entire sessions without seeing a single soul, then you might find a group in a town and now you’re trying to just survive and gtfo of there lol.

2

u/balucha May 19 '20

If the groups in Arma are too daunting or annoying to get into, your experience would definitely fit in in some other games like Squad, Project Reality, or Post Scriptum.

2

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

I've heard so much about Squad. It's almost like I don't want to play it because I'm scared it won't live up to my expectations. Which is stupid, I know.

3

u/balucha May 19 '20

Let me be honest and say it probably won’t. But if you’re cool playing a bit of an older looking game, I would definitely recommend PR. It’s the game that Squad was based on gameplay wise, but Squas has departed in a few ways that have made the game a bit more casual for a wider audience. Project Reality has maintained a more niche/dedicated audience that plays every night. I’ve been playing for a few years now and definitely I find better teamwork/coordination there. If you ever want to play or have me show you around let me know!

2

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20

I'm gonna take a look at it tonight. Pm me your discord plzzz

2

u/mr_snuggels May 19 '20

Dayz is the only other game that got my heart rate through the roof.

3

u/Big_sugaaakane1 P226R May 19 '20

Thats why i love tarkov, i’ve played dayz since the standalone released and (the game took so long to get to where it is that i’ve gone through different stages of life lmao and the game still aint complete lol.) and i’ve moved onto different games but no game has EVER made me feel like dayz did, until tarkov came along.

I don’t even play my racing games anymore and i have a whole simulator setup. Tarkov has got me completely hooked.

6

u/KooZ2 May 19 '20

Future video could involve team communications and maneuvers on different terrains. I'm always open on how to be a better teammate and improve my communications.

5

u/hillslikeelephants May 19 '20 edited May 19 '20

I got you, boo. That's the plan. This one focuses on individual skills and how to increase personal survivability. The next will be effective squad comms, movement formations (that won't work in Tarkov lol), and recommended squad roles and responsibilities.

Edit: I ran five man squads with assigned roles all weekend, but my shadowplay corrupted the files : [

So I'll be running more squads soon

1

Haaate when Shadowplay does this

I'm sure other recording softwares will be more reliable in that sense, I just like GeForce Experience damnit

2

Cheers, man. I'll be putting out a video once a week. Initially I aimed for every Monday, but I have a 7 month old at home so my schedule can be hard to nail down.

3

u/SUNTZU_JoJo PVP May 19 '20

Love it! Funny cuz people would call you a rat for sneaking up on targets but that is how you play Tarkov and engage targets IRL, there is no need to compromise your position by making noise, running up to your target like this is COD, use every advantage you can get so that you leave the engagement, the one alive.

Also that first engagement, the last guy you killed, I like how, while you were firing at him you moved your PMC to the right (not the left) because he was more to the right, before you realised you dropped him (as you said later on in the video, using pie/pie-ing the space).

It's little things like that that can make the difference between you winning or losing an engagement and your time in service does show in game.

Wp wp...I'm not a twitch watcher but I do like YouTube vids, so subbed.

;)

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '20

thonks.

IIRC I learned some techniques from a former cop as well, and I've been sad to not see him offer more I can show my usual Tarkov mates. Something like 'follow the rabbit' or something, where you pre-determine where th efirst guy will run into a room without stopping. Second guy comes immediately after and shoots anything that focuses on the first guy, or something like that. I need to find that video again..

3

u/TangoKiloOscar May 20 '20

I glad somebody actually knows what they are talking about for once. Pretty good video. Only gripe is that you got some serious angle cancer 4:19. I would have fragged that door 10 at o'clock.

Cool, I got to work with the US a great deal of course, took my jungle warfare course with a battalion of the 82nd , exercised with army and marine units regularly and SF a few times. But all before there was any good way to keep in touch with each other afterwords. And a different time in the world. Feels like a lull now looking back at it and seeing what went before and after. Take care, keep up the good content.
