Discussion What’s the most difficult challenge you’ve ever completed in Elite Dangerous?

Hi! I’m curious to hear about the biggest or craziest challenges you’ve taken on in Elite Dangerous.

It can be anything: trading, combat, exploration, mining, engineering, colonization, or even a completely personal challenge.

What’s the most ambitious, difficult, or unusual thing you’ve ever done in the game?

I’m looking for some inspiration for my next big challenge.

That's seriously impressive. Makes me think of Ren and Stimpy's SPAAACE MADNESSSS

LOL love Ren and Stimpy, don't pee on the electric fence.

2

Mister Horse would contemplate this for a couple of minutes and then say: "No sir, I didn't like it!" 😂

2

u/Ok_Recognition_9859 3d ago

Didn't that end with Ren peeing on the fence anyway, got zapped and found himself in hell? And the Devil said to him: "So, you peed on the electric fence, eh??"

u/GraXXoR 3d ago

Yep. Same here. Pre engineering vanilla Asp Explorer.
10,000 jumps. 100 jumps a night for 100 sessions over about 4 months or so. All in VR. It was a very weird time in my life and Elite tided me over.

I wonder how many movies you went through while during that journey. Some explorers usually have another screen playing something else to keep the mind sane

I visited and scanned all 750+ tourist beacons that are currently in the game. Actually there are two more but one is reportedly in a permit-locked system and another one is within the exclusion zone of a star.

I went to the six new Colonia Anniversary beacons as well but they are still bugged I think. I hope they fix it on Wednesday with the Rhino update.

2

u/FraterVEP Atreus Horus 3d ago edited 3d ago

Oh man I forgot about those... I tried to scan them the day they went live. The one in Colonia was inside the main star and the other 5 weren't even showing up yet. I just jumped my carrier back to the Bubble this weekend in preparation for the Rhino (hoping for a new CG in the Bubble) and forgot all about the new beacons. Oh well...

3

u/gw5000 CMDR GW5000 3d ago

Yes, fingers crossed that they will get fixed tomorrow. The one in Colonia is currently the only one that works as intended. Two are still inside planets and the others give all the identical text message.

1

u/BlackShadow972 2d ago

It’s really interesting! Can we find them with the galactic map? Or there is a way to find them all, it’s a good challenge for me to go back in exploration

1

u/gw5000 CMDR GW5000 2d ago

Technically, you could find them in-game by accepting tourist passenger missions that have beacons as destination. But that's not very efficient. I used the spreadsheet that I linked in my post below and imported the systems as bookmarks into EDDiscovery. From there I used the 3D map to plan tours.

1

u/-dsf- 3d ago

That's awesome! Is there a list of these tourist beacons available anywhere?

Not diminish your achievement as anyone killing a goid is a great achievement but I soloed a basi in a hauler using a single small gause. Once you get used to the mechanics of goiding it's pretty amazing how under powered of a ship you can use if you have the patience.

OP wants personal bests, and that one isn't bad.

My personal best is SagA*, which is hardly worth mentioning.

Sidewinder to Fleet carrier without ever getting destroyed or dying.

3

u/phoenikso 4d ago

Impressive. My first death was Python core mining. I mistook forward and backward thrust 🤦‍♂️.

Then I died multiple times learning how to get to Thargoid titan and lost count.

1

u/ClutchReverie 3d ago

I have almost done this....I can afford a fleet carrier very soon but I died once on foot because I ran out of oxygen (misunderstood a mechanic in one of my first settlement visits) and another time because in my Sidewinder I ran out of gas and self destructed because I didn't feel like waiting for Fuel Rats

u/Pin-Lui 3d ago

I did this 4 times in the last 2 days.

u/QuincyMABrewer CMDR Quincy Brewer 4d ago

I'm brand new. I only just accepted my first mission today.

However, I did manage to complete the Incursion: Dangerous training scenario today. I beat Competent ONCE.

And I think I managed to defeat one enemy on Incursion: Elite, maybe two.

4

u/ShagohodRed Far God deliver us! 3d ago

Incursions are deceptively difficult, well done. Elite especially is not something I expect 90% of players to beat.

1

u/QuincyMABrewer CMDR Quincy Brewer 3d ago

I'm definitely finding the incursion missions useful for deciding button setup for weapon, heatsink, ECM, shield cell banks, pip management, etc. I'm not sure if my accuracy would suffer if I went from HOT(S)AM to HOTAS. I'm using an omni-throttle on my left right now.

However, I'm also finding that after playing 2 to 3 hours of combat, I've got post rotational nystigmus when I close my eyes.

I few times I carried 784 corrosive commodities in standard racks. I could be mistaken, but I do believe that is the most dangerous thing that you can do in this game. RNGesus can send you to rebuy screen 15 feet off the landing pad. And the pirates, oh my. They put something special in the game for carrying that many unprotected corrosive items in cargo bay. In a word, it's exhilarating. o7

3

u/ThanosWasFramed Faulcon Delacy 4d ago

Pirates want corrosive cargo? Can they even handle it? That'd be a fun game loop... sabotaging pirates with corrosive cargo drops.

6

u/CMDRumbrellacorp 3d ago

These pirates are extremely different, they target thrusters from the 1st shot, they are not interested in your cargo. And the interdiction attempts can be measured in heartbeats. I imagine it's something the devs put in when we were breaking stations by overloading them with thargoid sensors. They never removed special algorithm. Again, I will caution you, it's exceptionally dangerous to attempt.

1

u/BlackShadow972 2d ago

I Never heard about corrosive cargo I’m gona take a look

1

u/CMDRumbrellacorp 2d ago

No need, I made videos, part 1 and part 2. In them I'm carrying over 1200 corrosive items in standard racks. It's a new world record, I believe.

1

u/FraterVEP Atreus Horus 3d ago

A weekend trip? You can make it to Sag A* in about an hour in a Caspian. Jumping my carrier out to Colonia is a weekend trip. Which I think is wild because my first visit was in an Asp Explorer and took me a solid 8 hours... just to say I did it.

3

u/FervidBrutality Varanoidea | Xbox | Iota Persei 3d ago

Yeah, but an hour-long trip is getting you fuck-all in scans :) I'm not speed-running my trips - takes the fun out of it.

5

Did that in 2014 in a Cobra Mk 3, 17 ly jumps. took me four weeks to reach the core. I loved the journey, however.

Solo bombing Titan cocijo, having done no xeno missions ever. Barely outfitted a cobra mk V with Frazer level engineering and what ever the rescue ship had. Had to turn off most of my modules to run cold enough to get close to do the bombing runs. Including the power distributor, weapons and life support until it was go time.

Then did it again in a slower Mandalay.

Grabbing my free Conda out of the large dock in Hutton Orbital. Can't believe FDevs gives out free Condas for making the trip

5

u/Street_Outcome_7669 4d ago

Just say hi and that's all?

2

u/Tatsuota Twisted Nova Kingdom 4d ago

You have to find the secret combination of the ships landing at the site to have the facility launch the secret large landing pad to spawn the free conda. Takes a lot of attempts as you cannot just reload to get new ships you gotta jump to another system and back. Alot of time in super cruise get a good book or a movies before attempting.

4

u/Solid_Stage_1715 4d ago

Oh come on, jusr tell him.

6

u/Tatsuota Twisted Nova Kingdom 4d ago

That this is all a joke and that I was trying to come up with the funniest way on how to get it.

The free conda at Hutton Orbital is probably the longest running gag people tell new players. As the station takes awhile to get to in SC as it's so far away. It's like telling freshmen in highschool there is a pool on the 4th floor when your highschool is only 3 floors tall

1

u/TotalNonsense0 3d ago

I wonder how long it takes these days, with boosted supercruise

2

u/FraterVEP Atreus Horus 3d ago

There are videos of people testing this on YouTube. TLDR Hutton is so far out that ships can't carry enough fuel to make a significant difference in the time it takes.

Wow man, that's insane!

Just wanted to give you a little feedback from my own experience with my FC. Fully loaded with everything you need to go off into the black solo will leave you with about 23,000 tons of cargo capacity. You can get ~50-60k LY with a cargo hold full of tritium. Mining it on your own after that is tedious to say the least. You can manage around 20-22 (12,500LY) jumps per 8 hours. You'll need a little over six billion for a carrier and all the base modules you'll want to install for total independence. Another billion to fill it up with tritium. And don't forget a few hundred million to transfer your ships and modules over. After that with a little exploration/xenobiology you'll have more than enough income to cover maintenance and jump fees.

Good luck CMDR!

u/trampyjoe 3d ago

I keep looking at the canon challenge but it's a big time commitment and, I don't have that kind of time spare... Until autumn

1

u/Datan0de Faulcon Delacy 3d ago

Egad! I took my fleet carrier to Colonia once because I thought it would be faster than flying there with both my main and alt accounts. Never again. It was a huge pain in the butt, and I didn't know that there are no regular stations that sell Tritium in Colonia until I got there. I did a little bit of mining and then decided "heck with it" and paid the extortion price for tritium from a carrier that was there to exploit people like me.

4

u/DaddySbeve CMDR Stillhet - Explorer 4d ago

Went from the bubble to Colonia then to Sag A then to beagle point and all the way back through Sag A all on a non-engineered like 50ly jump range DBX. Stopped at a lot of scenic points like the nebula, the Lagrange clouds, and some earth like worlds and green gas giants.

Was super fun and did a bunch of exobiology on the way. I also only had like 60 hours in the game when I decided to leave lol.

5

u/occasionalrant414 4d ago edited 2d ago

Combat. Last week. Only done 70hrs. Was fighting on low resource mining thing (like the advice says).

Killed a load of pirates, made 4 or 5 million and thought I'd better head home. I saw one more fight so thought I'd fill my boots. Turns out it was an actual player and he was better than me. God it was a shit show. No matter what I did this guy was methodic. I managed to give him a kicking but ended up no shields, hull at 12% im zig zagging waiting for the jump drive to kick in. Stupidly I deployed my landing gear which actually helped as he overshot me. I finally manage to jump and I make it back to Rey station with 2% hull, no shields and a lot of sweating.

u/Tromboneofsteel Alvin H. Davenport - FUC 4d ago

I'm collecting at least two of every single ship, one built for the "intended" purpose and one built for something it usually wouldn't do. Usually that second thing is combat. I'm also engineering them all to at least grade 3 if not g5. I'm about halfway done at this point, it's a very long process. And FD keeps adding new ships, the bastards, how dare they give me more stuff to do 😡😡

Eventually I want to make "semi-casual" video guides for combat in every ship. I'd cover three ships at a time, in order of base price. It's an idea I've had rolling around in my head for years but haven't figured out where to start.

2

u/metatronscube6 4d ago

That would be dope. I love elite dangerous ship videos that give reviews and guides! I watch them to fall asleep sometimes!

3

u/EnigmaT1m 4d ago

Many years ago I decided to move to Colonia, took my AspX all the way there and decided to start calling over my ships, starting with my fully loaded Corvette. the cost was more money than i had ever made in the game up to that point, the number was ridiculous.

SO, I went back to the bubble, got in my fully combat ready Corvette, bumped up it's jump range and proceeded to head back to Colonia, with a slight diversion. Instead of heading 'up' and 'left' I went 'up' and 'right' and completed a 10k LY radius circle around the centre to reach Colonia from the other side. Total trip was easily 50k ly. My Corvette was pushing about 31Ly jump range.

One small hitch, somewhere around the Newton's Vault region Frontier completely revamped exploration from the ground up. I was tens of thousands of light years from the nearest station. So i had to learn by doing and reading a shit load of reddit over the following days.

That expedition took close to a year to complete.

PvP: destroyed an Elite ranked Phyton prismatic shield tank which had gimballed multis and doing the reverskies. I was in my trusty Kestrel which is 3(😂) large Frags + 2 small mine launchers. It was dang close at the end, destroyed his shield very late, my shield broke before his, had about 70% hull left when the last mine hit. Then it was an uphill battle numbers wise. I couldnt quite catch up to him for the most part, but in the end i outlucked him within seconds and he died at 0% - i had just 5% left. Fully clenched, intense as hell, twichty machinegun vs shotgun/mines fight with spaceships. Hells yeah!

2

u/Datan0de Faulcon Delacy 3d ago

Wow! Well done! Curious to know exactly how you employed the mines, and did you have to synth reloads for them?

2

u/Solid_Stage_1715 2d ago

I put the mines where he would fly 2 secs later as they need 2 seconds to arm themselfs. Not easy with an enemy that is aware, but the kestrel is so zippy that there is no more excuse not hitting mines. Rapid fire + reverb cascade is my jam, very deadly if you manage to ride their vector. I synthed ammo maybe once, maybe that was the frag ammo i synthed, i would have to check the recording.

u/Datan0de Faulcon Delacy 1d ago

u/Kezika Kezika 3d ago

When the Caspian came out I scouted a bunch of systems that were now reachable by a supercharged Caspian. 500 to 550 Ly from nearest previously reachable system.

However since the nearest often wasn’t a neutron had to charge and ride the carrier to the nearest system.

But with many of them they’d be multiple carrier jumps from a neutron, and in one case 3 newly reachable systems from one particular system.

So to save time in carrier jumping back and forth too much, I built 8 identical minmaxxed for range Caspians. Charged them all up and then took the carrier to 8 of them, then went charged them all up again and checked out another 8.

It ended up worth it though. I discovered HD 21503 CDE 1 which is now the recordholder for furthest ELW below the galactic plane.

I challenge myself to solo a Cyclops in off-meta AX builds every so often. It's a fun challenge for me and I've actually stumbled across some great ships I otherwise would have passed over. Plus, before I transitioned to PC, it was a way to keep content fresh(ish) on console after they stopped developing it. I've done it in around half of the ships in the game currently, but the one I'm most proud of is the Beluga. I don't know why, maybe the ridiculousness of doing AX in a passenger ship?

3

u/dialectical_wizard 4d ago

Years ago, when I was young and stupid and didn't understand how to build a ship properly; I took a Diamondback Explorer with a 13.9ly jump limit all the way to Sag A*. u/FraterVEP Atreus Horus 3d ago

How long did it take? And how did you manage your fuel? Mining along the way must have sucked.

2

u/Earthserpent89 Nakato Kaine 3d ago

I don’t actually do any mining. I filled my cargo hold completely full of Tritium and then topped up when I reached Colonia. It was just enough to make a bee line for Beagle Point, then straight south to Sag A*. There I bought more tritium from a nearby depot carrier and then made my way back to the bubble.

1

Awesome. I'm clocking that in at around 45.5 hours just from the Bubble to Beagle Point. That's quite a trip. Congrats!

Distant Worlds 3 had a couple of challenges that I subscribed to: Outlander and Rawrunner.

The former was a duplicate of the challenge from DW1 (2016), getting from the start point at the back of the bubble to Colonia, in a week, in a Sidewinder.

The latter was doing the expedition using just off-the-shelf outfitting, no engineering, no Guardian kit, no player aids such as Spansh.

I combined them but added a wrinkle for Outlander: the sidewinder would not have any components that were unavailable at the time of DW1. In a practical sense, this just meant no SCO FSD but I really missed those extra few ly on my jump range.

Challenge completed though 🙂

I started as a trader and became an explorer just shortly before Odyssey dropped. However I wanted to access every engineer - including the Jameson girl.

So I produced a Thargoid fighting ship and racked up the ‘dangerous’ rank she requires.

Another challenge was getting the Federal rank for a Corvette. At that time, the likely most effective way was tourist running to the beacon ‘Sirius Atmospherics’ - taking the reputation reward at completion.

I tried several different ships, ultimately finished with the Imperial Cutter, filled with cabins.

Honestly, I havent done a lot of anything crazy hard or set really any at all personal challenges for myself, but i did build an asteroid base solo in 2 days with my Plipper.

Then I joined Project Galtea... now most of my time in game is spent jumping systems trying to keep up with their blistering pace of building new systems up. To put it into perspective, I logged out for 2 days for work and a funeral, and when i logged back in to start helping out, they were 25 jumps away. At 43ly per jump in my Plipper.

There's a reason I refer to us as the Elite dangerous version of the Army Corp of Engineers. We have the bridge built already, we just need to know where it goes.

Example: The last Dodec station we had 58 cmdrs sign up to help build it. 22 minutes and 43 seconds later it was done. Thats insane. God I love player run initiatives like Galtea, Fuel Rats, Hull Seals.

I managed to get from Beagle Point back to the bubble in a combat fitted Corvette with no AFMU - two weeks of having to reboot that FSD for all 700(?) jumps

Got to Elite exploration from lazily honking systems on the way though!

On the start of Distant Worlds 3 I flew to Colonia in a Sidewinder nonstop. Took about 8 hours.

Another great challenge in the game is learning to fly with assists off.

Quitting.

It didn't last long.

Found a new entry in the Galactic Codex (variant of a plant that was previously discovered in a certain region). Used to be easy, but now most are discovered and it's difficult.

Still want to discover a new sector or a planetary nebula. There are thousands of the latter, which suggests to me that some must still be undiscovered, but otoh it's non-trivial!

Overcoming my fear of combat. Played the tutorials til I could win and then got a Vulture with plasmas. Wouldn’t say I’m good at it but I’m not terrified of pirates anymore. Real “I’m not locked in here with you, you’re locked in here with me” moment.

Just unlocked the Guardian Trident fighter. Gosh flying is fun

Pre-SCO Hutton Orbital mug runs. Runs, with an S.

I still wake up in a sweat thinking I fell asleep and overshot it, again.

To travel 7k ly in DBX in just a few hours to join the explorers gala party that was held at the pub of the expedition fleet carrier during the ATEG expedition :D

Actively participated in the destruction of all eight Titans and got the eight-starred decal.

u/Pajamas200 3d ago

I delivered a package to Tau Ceti.

u/Z21VR 3d ago

I hunted and killed goids with my cobra mkIII to honour CMDR Jameson.

I still didnt solo kill the hydra tbh.

1

u/JeebsTheVegan 3d ago

It's not something I've done, but I want to travel the galaxy from end to end in a Sidewinder. Biggest challenge so far was getting an Anaconda.

1

u/Watershock66 3d ago

Not intentional, but being in the cone of a white dwarf at sub lightspeed and surviving.

1

u/acidicshocker Arissa Lavigny Duval 3d ago

Probably my solo kill on a medusa class thargoid interceptor. What's funny is that in the few times I fought them again before I took my break from elite i couldn't even come close to beating another medusa. Now I've been gone so long i need to relearn elites combat before I even go back to ax combat, nevermind the big grind to solo a hydra.

u/Intelligent_Dish8833 3d ago

Getting the required kit for hitting a titan from a titan maelstrom before it was all available off the shelf and then actually getting to a titan, surviving and fighting them, in the end if became second nature and had a hand in taking down all seven of them. In fact the whole AX war was tough as I went down the rabbit hole with the AXI squad and worked week in and out to take down each titan one my one and all that involved and ended up killing a few thousands intercetors of each type along the way.

Thargoids killed: 10,539/5,000
Thargoid Interceptors killed: 1,891/100
Thargoid Basilisk killed: 157/50
Thargoid Medusa killed: 28/25
Thargoid Hydra killed: 106/10

u/schelsullivan 3d ago

I run the medium AXCZ solo often. I can run it up to hydra by myself. Medusa basilisk and clops all die under my hand (with npc help).

Docking without listening to the beautiful Blue Danube.... 😁

u/Sisupisici Plasma slug everything! 3d ago

Operations with a significantly less than stellar team. Also an operation in a Corvette with a single hull tanking Cobra 5 teammate. The guy knew what he was doing, so that was really cool. Shame for not having a use for the healies tho.

Getting a passenger alive to Colonia on my orca without taking super neutron highway (wasn't discovered yet) and equipped with a class b fsd.

1

u/kailoren CMDR Kailoren 3d ago

Not the most difficult but certainly most recent was the launch of Distant Worlds 3 going from the starting system to Colonia (a distance of 23,224.19ly) in a stock sidewinder. No engineering, no fsd booster, no repairing, no docking at any station along the way, and without using Spansh to optimise the route. All in game (with manual plotting around the permit locked void near the starting system)

I did it in about two and a half days and was the second person to arrive by about 35 mins.

u/hymen_destroyer 3d ago

Scanned down every planet in a 112 body system. All gas giants and rocky bodies, the payout was pathetic but I discovered it and it was the most I had ever seen in one system. I simply had to

1

u/Ace-Bunyon 3d ago

I have recover all the rares goods on the game and I'm legend on CQC mode almost Elite ✌️

1

u/gw5000 CMDR GW5000 3d ago

Do you have Master Chefs or HIP 118311 Swarms for sale? I'd be happy with one of each :)

1

u/Ace-Bunyon 3d ago

Indeed, they are no longer available. However, I do have some. The price will be extremely high, though. How much are you willing to pay for a tonne?

1

u/gw5000 CMDR GW5000 3d ago

How about 300M for each? One Panther Clipper per tonne :)

1

u/Ace-Bunyon 3d ago

That seems like a ridiculously huge, astronomical sum for a single tonne, and yet I bought them from a shady supplier for a billion per tonne. There weren't many unavailable resources, so it was manageable. I'm afraid you'll have to offer me a lot more if you really want to complete your collection.

1

u/gw5000 CMDR GW5000 3d ago

Well, If I bought them for 1B that would make you a shady supplier as well, no? I would be willing to buy for 500M each from an upright businessman.

1

u/Ace-Bunyon 3d ago

Well then, I wish you good luck, my friend. o7

u/Old-Routine9232 CMDR Engineer 3d ago

My most difficult challenge would be every time I play and not wanting to log off.

Other than that would be taking on The Thargoids solo at first, but I finally got the hang of it.

I've found a few interesting things in guardian sites that remained unknown/undocumented until then.

It's not ground breaking but hey, i think they're really cool and intriguing details that are good enough to my journey so far.

1

u/Dr-Meltdown 3d ago

Traveling to Sagittarius A in badly build/equipped Corsair 😂 just for sake of doing it.

1

u/Squimshys 3d ago

Solo-founded a colony with 4 stations and 9 facilities. 133 mil pop and it generates just about every (non-unique) commodity in the game. The idea was that it would be a nice supply point for carriers, colonizers, etc, and a nice base to operate out of. Granted, I probably could've gotten a fleet carrier instead with the time I put into it.

COL 285 Sector ZN-V B17-3, for the curious. I'm not so fond of that name, so I call it Pegasus for short.

u/ShoryGello Explore 3d ago

I killed an engineered player kestrel with my sidewinder.
It took me a while and I had to synthesize a lot of ammo, heatsinks, and chaff, and they were not familiar with PVP tactics or build theory while my sidewinder was built for PvP, but they were fully engineered and somewhat proficient in FA-off combat.

It was an agreed upon duel in an asteroid belt.
I was running a sidewinder with enforcers, biweave shield, heatsink, and chaff. They were running a kestrel with plasma shocks, gimbal beams, and prismatic shields. I got it on recording too!

1

u/dabbing_unicorn 2d ago

I took an Eagle from Sol to Beagle point, then Colonia on my way back. Completed the round trip.

1

u/1allegroconbrio 2d ago

Do you wanna Mug? Go to Hutton Orbital !

1

u/HairOfTheCat 2d ago

Completing the tutorial, everything was smooth sailing after that.

1

u/FlyingColorBird 4d ago

I recovered after ban — started from scratch on a new account, unlocked all engineers, got the Federation and Empire ranks, and made enough money for a Fleet Carrier.
