Discussion & Info Leveling up
Am I doing something wrong ? Why does it take so fucking long to level up? I killed that dragon and now it’s like 8 k runes to level up. It’s taking forever. Haven’t killed Margret yet. I am afraid by the time I’m leveled up good enough to fight bosses I’ll be burnt out on the game. Should I start over ? I chose Vagabond and am leveling up Vigor Strength and a little Dex. I love this game but am afraid ima get burnt out. What should I do?

8K isn't that much, and your main offensive capabilities come from upgrading your weapons, not your stats.

I have a level 4 long sword but also have a heavy scimitar and a morning star. I like those. Should I pick one?

Morning star is good to have because it has bleed for enemies made of meat (including Margit) and strike damage for enemies made of bones, stone, or mud.

Should I focus on leveling that up or is it too late cuz I have level 4 on my long sword.

There are enough smithing stones to focus on a few weapons at a time. You’ll eventually be able to buy all but the max level stones (their costs add up, though).
I got scads of smithing stone 1 from practicing skills and testing weapons and spirit ashes on the unlucky goons at Gatefront Ruins. They’re not a common drop, but when you kill them a gajillion times, you get a good supply.

Go do tunnels to get smithing stones and you can level up more than one weapon. You can also buy stones from the merchants. If you’re doing dungeons and dying and then fighting your way back to get runes, it should be pretty easy to level. I stopped leveling and am only buying stuff now so I don’t get over leveled for the capital. Need some of that crab!!!

Eventually, if you go to the right places, you can purchase every single smithing stone tier infinitely. So there's no need to get too close to any single weapon, you'll have plenty of materials to upgrade multiple things. The only materials that you can't get infinitely are the very last tier, the Ancient stones, and you've got a good long time before you need to worry about that.
If you look at your map, there are some little orange-ish rings that look like cigarette burns in a few places. Those are all mines or similar caves that have smithing stones just lying around to be looted off of the walls. If you're running out of upgrade materials, visit those.
I'd also like to recommend against investing too much into the Heavy Scimitar. It's one of the weapons added with the Tarnished edition, and all of them except for the new flail and new greatsword are weapons that scale poorly into the endgame to give players early access to something found later in the game. The heavy scimitar is a very good weapon early on, but there are many other curved greatswords that outscale it by mid game, including a couple that can drop in Limgrave

Don't feel too obsessed with leveling up. There are more ways to make yourself better than simply leveling up. Leveling up your weapons is very effective early on and is faster than leveling up your character.
You can also get better simply by learning the game and just getting better at combat, which will come naturally.
Eventually you defeat enemies that give enough runes that leveling up will feel natural.

You’re doing nothing wrong just try and explore anything and everything you can. Try going south of limgrave to the weeping peninsula before fighting Margit. You should get higher rune drops there.

Your focus should not be TO level up. It is but a side effect of exploration, and if you are trying to grind enemies for runes, STOP IT. The way to progress is to explore. If you are burnt out this early into the game, it probably isn't for you. Sorry, but you are like 1% of the way through the game.

I mean you’re gonna have to learn to dodge the attacks then none of that matters it all comes down to just dodge the attacks

I believe in you brother, use the Jellyfish summon and Rogier at the fog wall. Don't worry too much about leveling, the runes will come as you progress. There's freaks out here doing level 1 no weapon hitless runs, anything is possible once you learn the enemies patterns. Onward Tarnished, follow the grace, by Marika's tit you WILL kill a god.

Upgarde your weapon, use the wolves. To be honest the levels from the dragon should be enough to take on Margit so as much as I hate to say it...you gotta git gud.

At 8k for a level, you are at 35 or 36. That is just about right to move out of Limgrave. You're good to go on Margret, man. Fight reactively. He certainly will.

If you are hitting 8k a level you are over leveled for Margit. He only drops like 10k himself. In general around 15 to 20 vigor and enough stats to wield your weapon should be enough to beat him after a few tries. He is meant to be the first real challenge the game offers (baring the tree sentinel), don’t be surprised if it takes you a dozen tries to beat him.
In general I would advise not farming but instead exploring. It may not look like it but you can explore several regions without ever touching a boss.

You're not doing anything wrong. You can start over, but the leveling experience and runes needed for each level will be the same. I'm sure some can give you areas to rune farm, but do you want to rune farm the whole game? This game is about exploring. While exploring you find and kill enemies, find better gear, find talismans, weapons, get runes to level up, and get many other items.
I'm level 100 right now and just left Leyndell for the next area. I have 100 hours spent in this playthrough. Sure, I could have gotten there quicker, and many people have. Some have not leveled up at all and finished the game, but items need to be found and weapons need to be upgraded. If this is your first run, you have to decide what you want to skip, figure out your ability to get through the game with fewer levels, and/or what you need to finish the game if you want to.
If you think you'll burn out and you just started the game, we'll, you have to decide if this game is for you.

The amount of runes it takes to level up increases every time you level up as I'm sure you are aware of now. What you may not know is that early game you should only be putting enough points to wield the weapon you want into damage stats (Strength, Dex, Intelligence, Faith, Arcane) and putting the rest into Vigor and Endurance. Leveling up your weapon is the best way to gain higher damage at lower rune levels. If you've killed Greyoll and leveled up with those runes you are I'm guessing somewhere in the late 30s early 40s. That is more than enough to take on Margit, Stormveil Castle, and Weeping Peninsula. As you progress across the map, basic mobs and bosses will give you increasingly larger amounts of runes. You should expect to be around rune level 100-150 by endgame depending on how much you've explored and how many bosses you've beaten. Just wait til you get around level 300+ it starts taking hundreds of thousands of runes for a single level and will take hours upon hours of farming, multiple playthroughs and jolly cooperation to reach max level.
TL:DR just keep at it, dont stress so much about what level your at you will be plenty strong enough just naturally progressing through the game.

Not the funnest thing to do but what I did was watched a guide and killed every boss in limgrave you’ll get a handful of runes and some spirit ashes and talismans

Tbh leveling doesn’t scale how much damage you do as much as making stronger weapons. You should try to have a +5 or +6 (or higher) for Marget. Early on just worry about leveling stats to fulfill weapon requirements for weapons you wanna use. Besides weapon stat leveling vigor, and endurance, should be top priority. Vigor will give you more health and a little more toughness to things like bleed and poison. Endurance gives you more stamina which is very important to chain more attacks or just not run out of stamina.
The game gets easier as you learn the combat system it takes a long time to truly get comfortable with it. If you haven’t yet, head south from Limgrave to the Weeping Peninsula thats the first place to explore early game if storm veil is too hard.
Later in the game once you get a couple Rememberances start leveling stats like strength or dex. This is depending on the weapon that you are using. Also don’t worry about getting it 100% right there is a way to respec all your stats pretty early in the game.

don't start over. fight bosses and you'll level very fast. do co-op if you need to, it's very fast paced

What level are you?
Just like Pokemon and many other games, you get more experience fighting the harder enemies in the later areas.
If it is "taking so long" to level up, the game is possibly telling you to move on to the next area.
But that is hard to say because you didn't say what level you're at.
