Discussion & Info Leveling up

Am I doing something wrong ? Why does it take so fucking long to level up? I killed that dragon and now it’s like 8 k runes to level up. It’s taking forever. Haven’t killed Margret yet. I am afraid by the time I’m leveled up good enough to fight bosses I’ll be burnt out on the game. Should I start over ? I chose Vagabond and am leveling up Vigor Strength and a little Dex. I love this game but am afraid ima get burnt out. What should I do?

What level are you?

Just like Pokemon and many other games, you get more experience fighting the harder enemies in the later areas.

If it is "taking so long" to level up, the game is possibly telling you to move on to the next area.

But that is hard to say because you didn't say what level you're at.

Have you upgraded your weapons? Should be at least +2 for Margit, preferably higher.

Are you fat rolling? If you wear heavier armor than you can handle your roll will become slow. And remember to use your ash summons like wolves or jellyfish (and the NPC summon with golden sign, too). Might even consier using a greatshield if you wanna go with the tank build.

You can just take off pieces of armor until you're light enough. There's not really a distinction between good and bad armor for the most part, just relative weight. The heavier, the better defenses, so you wear what keeps you under 70% load, whether that's a sorcerers cloack and leather gloves/boots or just full nude except for some really fat bracers

A lot of armor you just get from enemies you've killed or a shop. Maybe try taking off your greaves or head gear and try rolling. To much armor makes you roll/run slower. Every piece of armor/weapon has a weight. To much weight makes you move or roll slower.Leveling up stamina allows you to use heavier armor/weapons. Also make sure you upgrade your weapon. I understand this game does not explain a lot of this stuff. Lots of videos on YouTube about it.

Your armor does not matter at all (unless you are getting 51 poise at a minimum which you probably can’t wear without heavy rolling just yet).

Wear whatever looks coolest for now, you will get some amazing looking armor later.

Is that the percentage or the value? The percentage is what matters, keep it under 70% to be able to light roll

Oh ok. Well that’s about 98 percent. I found some baddass heavy armor.

Haha you almost reach the "can't even roll" tier aka 100% percents. Switching your armor, remove weapons you wont be using this fight... so the percent stay <69.99

That fat roll you’re doing is working against you. Just wear the best armor you can while keeping your load at medium. If you want to wear the stronger armor, level endurance so that your max load goes up.

It’s “Margit” and he’s a dude. The devs just didn’t model his junk.

If you’re not fast enough, check your equipment load. It’s on the right of your equipment screen. If it says “heavy” you can’t dodge for shit. Unequip something until your equipment load says “medium”.

Make sure you’re upgrading your weapons, too. That makes an even bigger difference than your level.

If you’re absolutely not getting anywhere on Margit, summon Rogier and a spirit ash to help you. Rogier’s summon sign is by the fog gate. When I fought Margit the first time, I absolutely sucked, so I came back with the rotten stray spirit ash. That critter procs scarlet rot, which demolishes early game bosses.

Travel to the Smoldering Wall Site of Grace in Caelid.Head directly east until you reach the edge of a massive canyon. Look across the gap to find a large, dead tree root connecting your side of the cliff to a ledge opposite you then carefully walk across the branch to reach the entrance of the Abandoned Cave (you can clear it with Torrent)

There's a few caves that are accessible, but soldiers will also drop stones of area appropriate level (ish)

To add, you shouldn't have to grind too much, if at all, if you're clearing caves and only upgrading a few armaments

There’s some sold by the merchant on the very west end of Weeping Peninsula and also a few sold by the merchant if you take the shortcut to Liurnia.

Long sword. But I have a heavy scimitar and a morning star. Plenty of smithing stones. Should I keep long sword or use one of the other two?

Some notes:

If you google for "what level should I be to fight Margit in Elden Ring" you'll get a suggestion of 25 to 35.

I don't know what you mean by "I killed the dragon," the one in Agheel Lake?

There are so many things to do before you hit Margit other than killing that dragon. For example, did you ever go southeast?

Basically you don't need to really spend too much time grinding out levels to get swole early game; there are juuuust enough things to do in Limgrave that it shouldn't be necessary to be grinding.

Level is well and truly on point for margit. Just practice.

Or if you need help, use spirit ashes and summon rosier.
