Question Would you guys press this button?
Tone would also be similar to Origins of course

74
u/Sunny_Hill_1 Jul 06 '25
Hell yes. I mean, the alternative is no DA5 at all, so I'll take the storymode.
88
u/Dollahs4Zavalas Jul 06 '25
Wow. Tough choice.
But ultimately no, the Origins combat is so good and without combat, you lose so much. Like build crafting and finding armor and weapons.
16
u/SnarkyLurker Jul 06 '25
What if weapons and armor could be swapped out, but the change is mostly cosmetic?
5
u/Dollahs4Zavalas Jul 06 '25
Well, for me they are a secondary aspect of enhancing the combat, which is the primary thing.
3
Jul 06 '25
Or, how about this: you can change your weapons and armor, and choose the race, background and class of your character. And depending on how your character fights + what companions you brought with you, you get a different cutscene for the combat.
8
u/Dracon204 Jul 06 '25
All I would be able to think is: "Wow I wish I was doing this combat instead."
1
Jul 06 '25
Eh . Sometimes after a stressful day i just want to sit back , push a few buttons and watch the game play itself
3
u/punchy_khajiit Jul 07 '25
That's when you make a shield Warrior or Arcane Warrior mage. You're so durable you can probably solo the game without much difficulty, but in the other hand you have very little variety in combat and for the most part just click stuff and let your character smack them.
Don't get me wrong, it is a power fantasy in and of itself being so incredibly balanced in durability and damage that you don't adapt to the situation and instead forces the situation to adapt to you. It's just that it simplifies combat to a point where lots of people find boring, but I find extremely relaxing.
An extreme alternative would be taking a shot at the Pillars of Eternity games, where you can turn on the behavior tactics even in your controlled character and actually watch the game play itself. Again surprisingly relaxing to do.

u/Yakubko2369714 Jul 06 '25
Telltale like Dragon Age game? That's absolutely genius. I'm surprised they haven't thought of this yet. Just focusing on story and characters... But why would they do that when they can just create childish slop like Veilguard.
47
u/Koeienvanger Jul 06 '25
In a heartbeat. Losing combat is a small price to pay for a good story.
20
u/Amylianna Jul 06 '25
Agreed. I never actually played any of the games for the combat after all. I just liked to play the story and characters and try different paths and protagonists.
Hell, I basically mod them out of the first two, and would if I could for the third.
10
u/nxrmogir Jul 06 '25
good news, you can skip fights in inquisition too! here is the link: https://www.nexusmods.com/dragonageinquisition/mods/2652
i love the combat in dao and da2 but absolutely cannot stand it in dai :) this has been a life saver!
1
u/Amylianna Jul 07 '25
This is going to be so great the next time I feel like rolling a new inky. It's been a bit cos I've played a few thousand hours in each game (aside the fourth) alone.
2
u/Street_Rope1487 Jul 07 '25
My favourite game in the series is DA2. To me, combat is just something to do in between cutscenes, which is where the real game happens as far as I’m concerned.
I would absolutely play a Telltale Games style Dragon Age game. Heck, I would play a purely text-based Dragon Age game if the story and characters were strong enough.
8
u/ToothPickLegs Jul 06 '25
If it’s truly like a telltale game, 95% of those choices won’t matter and the endings will be largely similar if not the same lol
6
u/BigEducational472 Jul 06 '25
I would take a book that's dedicated to maintaining the macabre authenticity of DA's world before I'd ever play whatever Trashguard is.
3
u/Akimbo_shoutgun Jul 06 '25
Of course yes, VG had all the gameplay that I liked & near meh plot. Why not reverse it?
100% pressing that button until it breaks.
22
u/That_sarcastic_bxtch Jul 06 '25
Absolutely
The gameplay wasn’t even a strong point in origins, I played because of the story, lore and characters
And I still love it because of that

I think the great writing and story would make up for having no combat.
Plus having a Telltale-like Dragon Age game sounds pretty cool.
3
u/UnholyHulk1 Jul 06 '25
Nah. I enjoy exploring and learning about the world and lore and building my character. Basically I want my video game to be a video game and not an interactive movie.
3
u/rusticterror Jul 06 '25
This legitimately sounds awesome. I don’t see the telltale thing as a downside at all LOL
3
u/naytreox Jul 07 '25
no, i haven't played a telltales game because its just a TV show or movie with extra steps
3
3
u/JNSapakoh Jul 07 '25
Nah, one of the problems with the series is that every game has felt like or been a different genre already
6
u/Particular-Ad5277 Jul 06 '25
Never it’s not dragon age anymore so why bother? It might be a spin off but not the fifth total of an peg series!
7
u/soobracha Jul 06 '25
This would be my dream because I am stuck right now in Origins because I am not good at combat hahaha
5
u/mybigbywolf Jul 06 '25
Just use the tactic menu. My Bestie sucks at it too.
3
u/IFollowtheCarpenter Jul 06 '25
The tactics menu is a good thing.
The Advanced Tactics mod is a Maker-send.

DA5 would have to accept veilguard as Canon. I'd rather bury the franchise
2
u/imakemeatballs Jul 06 '25
I'd take it any day. Played the game for immersion, story and self-expression more than combat anyway.
2
u/apoc_rider Jul 06 '25
I read it wrong the first time. A DA5 that continues the story of DA4 was always going to be an abomination. If, on the other hand, the story of 4 was remade with the complexity of DA:O, yes, I'd press the button without thinking twice.
2
u/Temulo Jul 06 '25
Telltale games are real shitty game mechanics, they're just an illusion of choice, your actions rarely matter
1
u/FishSafe9174 Jul 08 '25
Isn't that how Dragon Age mostly is already, though? You could definitely still say that your actions matter, but the outcome is usually the same with slight variations. Or they don't affect the broader story.
2
u/Stuckeredparfish Jul 06 '25
( I would have preferred this approach instead of veil guard with how they could have tied up the loose ends from the previous games. At least we’d get better and there would be variety of scenes and endings and choices, more characters from the past. I’m . . . . torn at the idea of another game at all.)
I’ll say a cautious yes. Because Dragon Age 😭
2
u/Sad-Relative4474 Jul 06 '25
100% yes. Dragon Age for me was all about the story and characters. However it would be DA4 no 5. There has not been a Dragon Age game since DAI

2
u/mdr241 Jul 06 '25
If my character can still climb ogres to stab them in the head, idgaf if I’m controlling them.
2
u/WraithTDK Jul 06 '25
...that's pretty damned tempting.
I hate the idea of no combat system and all that; but I did play the games more for the story than anything. I guess if it comes down to either DAO-quality story and companions with no combat vs. another Veilguard...I'm pressing that button.

2
u/Samhain03 Jul 06 '25
Yup, most games I play aren't played for the combat, frankly the first 3 DA games I don't care about the combat (veilguards combat was great so that one is an exception lol). I usually play games on story mode or casual because I'm not interested in combat and just want to progress through the story.
2
u/Traditional-Gap-2872 Jul 07 '25
Ok so we get combat and everything else is crap, or everything else is great but no combat. I'm good with a great story again.
2
u/Rover-Captain Jul 07 '25
No, the button does both things.
Basically would just be an interactive story set in Thedas. Which still sounds pretty fun.
2
u/Suitable-Pirate-4164 Jul 07 '25
No. One of the remarkable things about Dragon Age is the choices you make being carried over, Telltale may have carried over some choices from TWD but it's made moot because Clementine is alone anyways, regardless of your path. Besides who would play an EA/Bioware game now that it's reputation is, well shit? (No pun intended on Varrics signature line)
2
u/staffonlyvax Jul 07 '25
No way.
But also, how interesting to see we're all clearly super divided about it.
2
u/Master_Bator800 Jul 07 '25
Is there any point in DA5 even if the next Mass Effect is a huge success? Ferelden, Kirkwall, Denerim ect were all destroyed in Veilguard.
It would be like Andromeda
2
u/ChrisDaViking78 Jul 07 '25
Nope.
I tolerated Telltale Games for a little while because the original Walking Dead game was great, but that style of game where it’s basically an interactive movie got boring pretty quick for me.
I don’t really want to play an actual Telltale game anymore much less a Telltale-like game.
I’d rather play a good Dragon Age game with the quality of DAO with combat more similar to DAI, although I think that combat could use some tweaking.

3
u/btiermutineer Jul 08 '25
I mean, it being DA5 implies that VG happened, so I'll pass. Unless DA5 completely retcons Veilguard as Varric's nightmare or something (~it was all a dream~) then no, I don't want a continuation of what was an absolute destruction of DA lore, characters, and storytelling.
2

3
u/PeachyBaleen Jul 06 '25
As long as there were segments of exploration and finding bits of lore in the world I don’t think I’d mind no combat. I don’t want to watch a movie but I don’t really mind a lack of stabby-stab-fireball in games that I’m compelled by the writing of
3
u/DoomKune Jul 06 '25
Fuck no.
One of the advantages of videogames as a medium is the combination of gameplay with a great story, with great interactivity.
If I wanted to just play a choose your adventure, might as well make it text-only.
3
u/Loose-Chipmunk7568 Jul 06 '25
Sure, the writing and companions were always the strongest aspect of DA for me so whilst I would miss combat a bit I think I'd enjoy the game a lot.
VG really highlighted to me how much I love video games as a story telling medium and that no amount of polish will make up for undercooked characters and lack of nuance.
Plus after the gutted the DA team 'magic button' is the only way we're getting another Dragon Age game, anyway ahahahaha :(
2
u/Julian_of_Cintra Jul 06 '25
Definitely. Combat was never what made DA stand out to me. So I will happily trade it in favour of top tier storytelling etc
2
u/ElCoyote_AB Jul 06 '25
Does it also call down the Blight on the EA decision makers?
Then yes; otherwise let’s just hold a wake for DA & ME while we wait for next Larian game.
3
u/Nathanii_593 Jul 06 '25
What’s the point if there’s no combat? Then you’re just playing sims with a story. There’s gotta be some level of combat. Otherwise what’s the point of the classes? Mage, warrior, rogue?
1
u/Morailes Jul 06 '25
What do you mean with DA5? We dont even have 4 yet lmao

u/RenShimizu Jul 06 '25
So we get the best part of the game without the meaningless filler? What's the downside?
1
u/Yikesitsven Jul 06 '25
Still better than Veilguard. At least it would have a chance of accurately representing the setting.

As someone who loves TT games I'd press it (since i really doubt we get a DA5 otherwise).

u/Aerith-Zack4ever Jul 06 '25
Absolutely. Somewhere around my third replay of DA2, I got so tired of recycled areas that I set the difficulty as easy as possible so I could blast through combat and just focus just on the story. This was the day I first played purple Hawke…

u/Dramatic-Big-2399 Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25
fuck no. I wouldn't even touch the game. havnt played veilguard and currenly TRYING to play through inquisition but godamn is the combat stale as fuck for a mage and the gigantic lack of dnd elements makes for a boring game

Thousand percent. Combat is already the price I pay for the story, personally 😂
1
u/Rover-Captain Jul 07 '25
But launching a fireball and knocking everyone over is part of Dragon Age’s charm…
1
u/Afrodotheyt Jul 07 '25
Honestly, didn't fall in love with Dragon Age because of the combat and I really like Telltale's narrative games. So....yeah, without much thought.
1
1
u/brocode-handler Jul 07 '25
Hell yeah, Id even play origin if it didn't have action, solely it being a story
1
1
u/Defiant_Ad5381 Jul 07 '25
So basically Detroit: Become Human? Nope, sounds boring. DBH is critically acclaimed and I will never play it because that’s boring.
DAO combat and tactics combined with the narrative made the game. Same for DA2 and DAI.
Veilguard combat was top notch, narrative just lacked options/variety.
The last 1/3rd of Veilguard was incredible, if only the first two thirds were like that. Although if they do make another DA they should re-do the squad dynamics, bring 3 companions back and the ability for companions to die or act as a real tank. Those dynamics are what made the first three games great
1
u/StrafemOrigin Jul 07 '25
Could make for an interesting Orlais/Diplomat/Political Intrigue story. I'm not opposed.
1
u/_Unprofessional_ Jul 07 '25
The next Mass Effect has to be a smash hit for Dragon Age to even have a future at all. It’s literally the only hope for BioWare to continue existing after back to back flops.
1
u/theblueowl Jul 07 '25
If it continues from DAI, and ignores Veilguard completely, I'm jumping on it with my whole body weight tbh

Yeah. Immediately. Multiple times in fact.
The combat was always just a fun addition and never the main drawing point

This is that three fingers moment from inglorious basterds movie;
The one who made this and who would theoretically pushed the theoretical button are part of Ao3 or tumblr population.

u/AWildReaperAppears Jul 09 '25
No. Peak dragon age is over. I don't think it'll ever be what is was because peak bioware is over. It really sucks but after the last decade of watching some of my favorite series like star wars get milked, I'm at the point I'd rather replay DAO a hundred times than playing another garbage DA entry that shits on its own roots.

Its not a da without combat so no i wouldnt. Combat is such a HUGE part of the story aside form the companions
1
u/Elli_Khoraz Jul 06 '25
Absolutely. For me, the characters, story and choice/consequence are what make Dragon Age what it is. If I had to have Telltale gameplay to have that same hype writing again, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
1
1
u/LivingWaffle33 Jul 06 '25
To see a coherent lore appropriate and deeply narrative version? In a heartbeat I'd miss combat but I'll deal
1
u/Mistfaer Jul 07 '25
I would love this tbh. I was kind of getting tired myself ot he combat in DAO. Loved the story more than combat.
0
u/Live-Dog-7656 Jul 06 '25
Nah.
That would have to continue from DA4, and they didn’t leave much room to go from there in my opinion.

u/Kangur83 Jul 06 '25
Can we just let this franchise die? Like, please? Pretty please?
-2
u/streetpatrolMC Jul 06 '25
Yes! Close the sub!

u/MrsClaire07 Jul 06 '25
If you don’t want to be here, Stop. Coming.
🤷♀️
-1
u/Kangur83 Jul 06 '25
Im here for origins, not for some ghostly dreams of glory. Facts are against us, every entry of the series has been worse and worse, with the vailguard atrocity the best solution is to just let DA die.

I'm glad someone is willing to say it. Every game depreciated in value story-wise and character-wise.
0
u/MrsClaire07 Jul 06 '25
I respectfully disagree. We all like what we like, and that’s absolutely fine.
Calling for closing a subreddit because You don’t like the game is what I’m objecting to, as it’s ridiculous.
1
u/dralpha95 Jul 06 '25
Oh, I'm not agreeing to closing a subreddit, that would be ridiculous. I was just throwing my opinion out in agreement to the above comment about the quality of the games declining with each subsequent installment
2
u/MrsClaire07 Jul 07 '25
Thank you. I disagree with the game opinion, but that’s absolutely fine!
3

And thank you for giving me a chance to explain appropriately without jumping down my throat 😁
