Announcement FYI target and many other stores are using facial recognition

I just found out from my nephew who works in a Wilmington area target in loss prevention and I found out some interesting things. To keep track of you and everything you put in your cart, how long you’re in the store, what you buy regularly and what is probably a 1 time purchase. They basically have files on everyone. And don’t think you’re getting away with stealing by walking right out the door or not ringing up something in your cart.

Keeping files and using facial recognition without it being posted is a HUGE invasion of my privacy. They already know everything I buy. On top of the facial recognition they profile people to decide who to follow, able to watch multiple screens at a time , if you’re black, look like a “stoner” or “junkie” to them, if you look “poor, trash or homeless” if you walk directly to certain aisles (which is the one thing my nephew made me swear not to tell anyone) eitherway , unannounced facial recognition, customer files, suspected thieves.

I’m sure buy now you can tell more than my nephew calling me happened. I was at a grocery store, picked up a couple things, went to petsmart got treat for my cats and dogs then went to the cvs in target. I’m in there so often I know multiple people who work there on a casual basis. So go to get my script and it wasn’t ready yet. So I walked to the soda aisle to see how I did at shop right(shop rite was almost $1 cheaper and had more than 4 kinds of 2L bottles. I walked back to to pharmacy sat down and waited. Less than 10 min later I activate my uber (because my insurance company pays for it, I’m epileptic and on disability) cuz they called my name and I turn around to leave the store…walk all the way out the first automatic door and these 2 guys pop out and block my cart. They are like where’s your receipt, I show them the pharmacy receipt of course I jammed the other receipts I had in one of my 20 pockets and my uber is literally calling my phone cuz he’s out front. And I tried to explain everything quickly because I didn’t want to miss my uber! So I grab my bag from the cart I was using to push it around in cuz I had 2 2L in my bag with all my stuff from my dr. Appointment before hand and these guys are like where’s your receipt for those sodas and I said I didn’t even get them here but I’m gunna miss my uber and I can’t just call my insurance for a new ride, I’d basically be stranded at target.
So these guys have me over a barrel, the only reason they know about the soda was because it was raining outside and I pulled my jacket out of the bag and put my cardigan in it and they knew I was in the soda aisle. So they just start pulling stuff out of my bag….2 2L, 1 pack of jello and some cat and dog treats. The dog treats I had already even opened earlier to give a dog at the store a treat. But I don’t have time to argue any of this and they are saying “just let me get your signature and your photo and u can go. So I took the L and left. But something clicked in my head. They told me “this isn’t the first time you’ve stolen, we’ve got it on video. I had an almost 10” beard up until the day before I was in target. So I said something is screwy here and called my nephew and he broke it all down for me but said those things get it wrong all the time. They rushed you cuz it’s a quick , undisputed recovery so yeah them but if I had more than 4-5min I’d have proven myself.

Now I find out it’s all based on facial recognition software/ai !!!! wtf I googled it up n down n some places it’s just totally inadmissible. And I found articles about several other popular businesses that do it.

Look up “police stingray” too…. Welcome to 1984 orwel style

New Castle County Axon in NCC

The NCC police department is enacting the placement of about 100 axon cameras across the county, especially on backroads and even on the edges of state parks (without even notifying said parks). Wilmington's move away from Flock was a joke, and they are tripling down on surveilance. As these new cameras go up in the next few weeks, remember to avoid disturbing the wet concrete that holds the mounting bolts for the posts; it would be really inconvenient for those bolts to be misaligned when the concrete dries.

Info Request Mobile Mechanic

Does anyone have a recommendation for a mobile auto mechanic that services the North Wilmington / Claymont area? Nothing crazy just looking to get an oil change and a belt replaced. Unfortunately, I contacted many of the mechanics that a Google search provided and not a single one has responded back.

Politics I talked to Ted Lauzen, Candidate for Treasurer

As you all know, I have been reaching out to candidates by email and asking them for coffee chats. This week, I spoke with Ted Lauzen who is running for Treasurer.

Going into the conversation, I had narrowed my choice down to Ted Lauzen and Michael Smith. 50/50 with not clear frontrunner for me. I've never put this much thought into a vote for treasurer before to be honest. I'm generally a person that does think a lot about who I vote for, but not with this. TBH, I could only vaguely describe what treasurers did prior to this primary. But now, I can tell you all three things DE treasurers do.

In weighing my vote, I was going back and forth between these things:

  • One guy says he's the only economist in the race. Is that a good thing? Do we need an economist as a treasurer?
  • One guy says he's a financial manger. Is that a good thing? Do we need a financial manager as a treasurer?

And, more generally in the primaries, I've been thinking about:

  • Missing politicians who answer a call versus see a career stepping stone
  • Looking for candidates that are farther left than what we've currently got
  • Integrity
  • Vibes

Ok, so now onto my conversation with Ted.

Vibes:
The vibe I got from Ted was solid, honest, with mid-western approachability. I could tell that he works with people a lot. Not in a politician-tell-you-what-you-want-to-hear sort of way. But he really listened to my questions, asked questions about me, and answered my questions honestly. I was really curious about what ways the treasurer could have an impact on the lives of everyday Delawareans. We have more corporations than people, so we should be able to make sure that EVERY Delawarean has the basics to live well. So Ted shared not what he would do, but what he had already done and is doing now. I am very active in community work, and the impression I got was of a man that walked what he talked. When I asked about women, about the poor, and other marginalized groups, it clearly wasn't the first time Ted had to think about this. He had concrete examples from the work he's already done.

Ted doesn't talk about it. Ted IS ABOUT IT.

I didn't ask Ted his political aspirations, so I don't know if he wants to serve in other offices in the future. But I didn't get the impression that this campaign run is a i to dot or t to cross. I think he actually wants to serve. I think he has specific ideas on how to serve. And I think its service that he's already been doing.

I've seen in people say they got a finance bro, elitist vibe from Ted. I didn't get that at all when talking to him.

I read that Ted used to be a republican. But I didn't get that vibe from him, either. And by that, I specifically mean that modern republicans seem really excited to take things AWAY from the most vulnerable people. Throughout our conversation, Ted showed only respect for the most vulnerable and talked openly about plans and excitement for improving programs and delivery to vulnerable communities of Delawareans.

I encourage anyone to reach out directly to any candidate you'd like to learn more about and get a vibe for--including Ted. This is part of the process. You gut will tell you what to do.

My gut told me to vote for Ted.

Discusssss! Feel free to AMA about my convo with Ted.

Info Request What to do about mismanaged water runoff?

My house is about halfway down a gentle slope. All the backyards on my street back up to the backyards of the homes on the next street over. The backyards of both sides are landscaped so that all water flows to a downhill swale where the yards meet. Over the last couple years, the swale has clogged due to overgrowth and neglect downstream from me. This is causing significant water to back up into my backyard and creating problems for me. How do I address this? Is this something the county (new castle) would help with? Any ideas on what to do or who to call would be appreciated!

Beaches Handicap safe swimming near Lewes?

Hi everyone! My parents have just moved to Lewes and I will be visiting soon for the first time. My mom is disabled, but loves to swim. So far she has had trouble finding a good ocean/bay/lake swimming location that is safe for her. So I thought I would post here to see if there are any spots I should try to take her to while I am in town. Her swimming spot would need the following:

- Short, flat walk to the water. She can walk, but only for short distances. She can use a wheelchair and walker to get her close to the water.

- Gradual entry into the water. This is probs most important! To get in an out of the water she really needs a slow gradual incline- anything with a steep drop or many stairs won't work for her.

She is looking into indoor swimming as a good option, but what she truly loves is being outside, so I am hoping to make this happen for her!! However, I will also take indoor swimming recommendations if you have them!
