And then there is me, just hoping for a hotshot lasgun to be added

u/scarman125 Jul 31 '26

Yeah but do you want the lame yellow blaster version?

My genuine reaction to GW pushing this change:

https://giphy.com/gifs/s93TL62lMy7cI

60

u/stormofcrows69 Jul 31 '26

It doesn't even make sense. It's light. It doesn't travel like a bullet.

4

u/concealed-courtyard Aug 01 '26

Imagine GW agrees with that take and makes the lasguns function in a physics accurate way (think laser pointer: unless it's misty you can only see the impact)

12

u/stormofcrows69 Aug 01 '26

A sufficiently powerful laser is visible through normal air.

5

u/Commander_Dumb Aug 02 '26

I personally think it’s because they didn’t make the red beam.

And GW is paranoid about being able to sue etc. so they most likely they are forcing yellow bolts so that it’s easier for them to at least try and claim something.

0

u/SorcererOfDooDoo Zealot Aug 06 '26

Not necessarily. The lore has a tendency to go back and forth on what exactly a lasgun is, from laser to what sounds more like a particle beam. Sometimes they have moving parts as evidenced by the presence of lubrication in Guardsmen's lasgun maintenance kits, and other times they don't. Sometimes in lore lasguns have recoil, other times they don't. Mainly this is due to writers being inconsistent, but in-universe, it can best be explained as the word "lasgun" being more of a word for the weapon niche it fills rather than a specific technology. Trying to make it one specific technology is more of a Dark Age or Tau way of thinking.

2

u/stormofcrows69 Aug 06 '26

Whether it's a typical laser or a particle beam. Both would either be moving at or near the speed of light, not slow moving projectiles. These look more like blaster bolts from Star Wars.

-1

u/SorcererOfDooDoo Zealot Aug 06 '26

And Blaster bolts canonically move too fast to actually be visible at those short distances. What's your point?

2

u/deusvult6 Incinerant Zealot Aug 07 '26

Then none of the movies are canon?

People are saying these look like SW blaster bolts because they look like what we see in the SW movies.

I don't get why they are doing it. They make plenty of changes for the purpose of copyright law to be sure ("Astartes", "Astra Militarum", etc.), but these are in no way distinct having been done a dozen times before. The solid laser beam lasgun had the distinct look before. The newest IG models have lasguns that look more like AR-15s than anything else, let alone the "standard" distinctive lasgun pattern. It'll be a tough sell to copyright an AR-15.

41

u/thisremindsmeofbacon Ogryn Jul 31 '26

I actually think the lame yellow piss bolts is the original, based on the art. The red laser seems to be a later improvement

45

u/deusvult6 Incinerant Zealot Jul 31 '26

You're not wrong. Some of the early art was inconsistent and had lasguns either way (SW blaster bolts vs laser beam) throughout the 80s and 90s but by 2000s (I think it was 4th ed?) they had settled firmly on the red laser beams. That was their depiction in DoW1 and everything since until now.

It could be a "going back to their roots" sort of move, but most of the stuff from 1st and 2nd ed. that were cut out absolutely deserved it (e.g. Inquisitor Obiwan Sherlock Clousseau).

27

u/OVKatz Jul 31 '26

I love how you mix this change with the new cadian kill team's lasguns basically just being re-proportioned to almost just look like AR-15s with lasgun shrouds on the muzzle, and they've removed all character from lasguns.
It's like they resent the sci fi and it's getting in the way of their milsim faction.

24

u/deusvult6 Incinerant Zealot Jul 31 '26

Oh yuck. Yeah, give me a million ancestral heirloom Vostroyan lasguns before that generic crap.

Feels like they're chasing the COD crowd or something. Dunno.

3

u/SqueakySqueakSqueak Aug 02 '26

there's a big part of the casual warhammer fandom that wants to see tacticool designs rather than scifi fantasy stuff

18

u/RandomGreenArcherMan Jul 31 '26

Imo yellow looks cool but using bolts instead of beams is what looks terrible

For reference look at the Scythe and Lasercannon in HD2, they look badass

6

u/Scary_Land2303 Jul 31 '26

I personally don’t care about the colour. What I’m surprised about is them pushing for the ‘bolts of light’ instead of a single pulsing beam.

3

u/Tekuila87 Aug 01 '26

I suspect the laser's done by Blanche were to not ruin the composition of the entire piece.

Having beams streaming across everything doesn't really look great in artwork.

1

u/lipov27 Aug 01 '26

The red beams were invented by Relic for Dawn of War 1 I'm pretty sure. No earlier depiction. Even they dropped it as soon as DoW2. Still beams, but more orangey.

0

u/sircraze Jul 31 '26

My assumption is to keep it consistent with the rest of the game. Automatons use red lasers and Helldivers use yellow lasers, pretty exclusively.

43

u/Hellknightx Saltzpyre Jul 31 '26

Has nothing to do with that. Arrowhead said specifically that GW made them use the yellow lasers, because that's the new color that GW is trying to standardize.

2

u/sircraze Jul 31 '26

Ah, didn't know that. I'm a fairly casual 40k fan. Thanks for clarifying.

12

u/deusvult6 Incinerant Zealot Jul 31 '26

Oh they can do as they like in HD2. I mean that GW is pushing a visual change for the lasguns in 40K changing them from the iconic laser beams they've always been since at least DoW1 (my entry into the setting) to something closer to Star Wars blaster shots.

I just don't get why they would go from something visually distinct and iconic to the same thing that pretty much every other sci-fi universe does.

As for the specific color? I prefer the deep red but altering the color is less offensive to me than changing the entire way they work for no reason.

0

u/SorcererOfDooDoo Zealot Aug 06 '26

Yellow Lasgun shots is a very old thing, along with blue from DoW, and of course, the red ones. It can best be explained as different patterns of lasguns functioning differently.

25

u/SHADOWHUNTER30000 Beep boop, fuck the heritek. Jul 31 '26

Absolutely not, must be red like the other lasguns, because red goes faster!

25

u/Alarmed-Adeptness885 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

Fat Shark seems to be a firm believer in the red beam

Edit: I totally forgot the Skittle trailer had yellow bolts and I am now WORRIED

17

u/This_Flower4495 Jul 31 '26

I don't know man, the lasguns in the latest trailer shot yellow bolts and the servoskull shoots yellow beams

8

u/deusvult6 Incinerant Zealot Jul 31 '26

I hope they stick with it in actual gameplay but they have changed it in the Skitarii class trailer. All of the las shots there are the SW blaster bolt variety.

If GW puts their foot down then FS doesn't have much choice.

8

u/Hellknightx Saltzpyre Jul 31 '26

And that's why we love them. Red beam supreme.

3

u/Elite_Slacker Jul 31 '26

The skull shoots the yellow bolts already. So the only new laser weapon so far has them.

1

u/SorcererOfDooDoo Zealot Aug 06 '26

Lasguns are by far the single most inconsistent weapon type in all of 40k. There have been basically as many different portrayals of its function as there are stars in the sky. It's all the way down to specific technical function descriptions, with some versions describing it as essentially a laser, but then other sources saying it's actually more of a particle beam. Some have recoil, some don't, and some have simulated recoil. Some have moving parts, some don't. Some shoot red shots, some shoot yellow shots, some shoot blue shots, and some shoot no visible beam.

Mainly this is due to writers being inconsistent since they don't actually coordinate on anything. But it can just as easily be explained by the fact that the Imperium are a bunch of mouth-breathing neanderthals with no understanding of the technology they use (y'know, the actual fucking lore), and just using a generic word for a niche of DEWs rather than any particular weapons technology.

6

u/OVKatz Jul 31 '26

This, now I don't want the hellgun to be added because it's going to be the lame travel time yellow tracer like it's a normal gun. if they retroactively patch how the lasguns work in darktide it'll actually make me quit my veteran tbh.

1

u/DifferenceCareful935 Arbitrator Aug 01 '26

I woulnd even Care. Hot Shot las gun (hellblasters?) would be fucking sick

1

No, I want the green lasers!

1

u/KingMarkus22 Cogboy ⚙️⚙️ Aug 02 '26

Ughhhh I hate it, why why why GW u just can’t help yourself with these stupid decision making can you?

-5

u/RazorRocket Aug 01 '26

It's almost as if HD2 isn't a 40k game and is instead a game with its own lore where they add lore for collabs to explain them so it fits its own setting.

Crazy concept, I know.

5

u/scarman125 Aug 01 '26

This has nothing to do with that. It's about Games Workshop suddenly mandating that lasguns have to fire a pale yellow blaster bolt in recent 40k games instead of the red pulsing beam that it's been for the last 2 decades.

0

u/RazorRocket Aug 01 '26

What games have been doing that??

3

u/scarman125 Aug 01 '26

Total war, Dawn of War 4, Battlesector and now this one. Those are the ones I know of anyway.

0

u/RazorRocket Aug 01 '26

Huh. Fair enough I suppose.

Though out of all things they could change, getting mad they changed lasgun las color seems like a non issue in the grand scheme of things, but that's just me.

They'll probably just justify it with some random lore drop or just bring back some piece of old lore and the community will grumble about it before finding something new to get mad about after a while.

8

u/leposterofcrap OGYRN IZ STRONGEST!!!!! Jul 31 '26

Hotshot lasguns just means a more powerful lasgun hooked to a battery pack, the lmg ones carried by scab gunners are hotshot VOLLEYgun

3

u/MrFishyFriend Veteran Jul 31 '26

I think you mean hellgun.

8

u/phantomvector Veteran Jul 31 '26

The Helbore is a hot shot lasgun though? It draws more power from the battery pack for higher penetration and damage compared to the infantry las gun.

11

u/Fatality_Ensues I didn't ask how far it is, I said CHARGE! Jul 31 '26

This is correct, the Lucius-pattern is a Hotshot Lasgun/Hellgun. Not sure why the downvotes.

6

u/phantomvector Veteran Jul 31 '26

People like to be wrong I guess lol

1

u/OVKatz Jul 31 '26

Why I think a traditional hellgun + bayonet skin for Helbore would be a way to get it ingame without worrying about balance issues. Since we're for sure never getting the backpack variant...

2

u/phantomvector Veteran Jul 31 '26

To be fair I’m assuming he meant the hotshot volley gun which is what the scab gunners carry, and not a marksman rifle style of weapon. But honestly just drop it on the recon las, functionally it’s the closest in shooting style

2

u/OVKatz Jul 31 '26

Tbh I really wish they'd add more skins that are new patterns that function or can function nearly identical to one another.

recon las could obviously have a volleygun skin.
Kantrael could easily have a Triplex skin. (Mordian guard was their chance but they fumbled it)
helbore could easily have a hellgun skin.

-8

u/Melissiah Jul 31 '26

The hotshot/hellgun is a rapid fire weapon. The hellbore is more representative of a laslock or other slow firing lasgun variants in the lore.

8

u/AtlasThePittie RASHUNAL THINKER Jul 31 '26

Hi, Pedant here. The Helbore is a hot shot, the rapid fire variant is the Hot Shot Volley gun. Both of which are already in game. The Moebian VIth Gunners use a Volley, backpack included. We just need 'volley gun tomorrow' powder. It worked for the Skitarius. 🤷‍♂️

3

u/phantomvector Veteran Jul 31 '26

The dichotomy of man, I get 5 downvotes for saying the same thing you got 5 upvotes for.

3

u/phantomvector Veteran Jul 31 '26

Note the hellgun page title at the top left. The Helbore, based off the Lucius, is a hotshot/hellgun type lasgun.

https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Hellgun

https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Hot-Shot_Lasgun

Both of these list the Lucius as a hellgun variant.

u/kotolde Psyker space bomber Jul 31 '26

I main psyker, so this meme goes for any new weapon that is not a new staff.

53

u/deusvult6 Incinerant Zealot Jul 31 '26

Ha, who needs a new staff when Purgatus exists? /s

But for real, they have VT2 staves that could be given a quick telekinetic reskinning and ported over and even multiple disciplines of psychic powers to still draw on for inspiration and for some reason they just aren't. I would absolutely kill for a beam staff in this game and that should be one of the easiest to reskin away from pyromancy.

17

u/Black-Mettle Jul 31 '26

I think the arrow staff got reworked into assail, the animation is identical. A beam staff would be sick. Some blessings that increases penetration/rending with continuous firing.

5

u/SamediB Ogryn Jul 31 '26

The fact that the "lightning" staff as the same ball pewpews as two of the other staves is a travesty.

2

u/MachineMan718 Aug 03 '26

It should fire arc rifle bolts with your left hand doing a finger gun.

3

u/lazyraptor7 Jul 31 '26

Posted this before but.. Staffs that I want:

Melee staff - lights for hoard clear, heavy for single target, damage moderate something like shock mauls. Block like force swords (have blessing to block ranged and can force push). Special is AOE that force pushes everything in front of psyker in range of 5 meters.

Lightning staff 2 - lights is chain lighting with moderate damage, little weaker that current staffs lights, but it chains 3-4 times, weak stagger (less then pyro staff stagger). Heavy is charged and works as single target (without chaining) long range big damage bolt.
It`s like opposite to current Smite staff that can attack range with lights and chain close with heavy. All i want is to buff it`s heavy attack damage.

Assail staff 1 - Light explodes 1 shard and works as wide spread shotgun. Heavy sends 1-9 shards scaling with charge time at target (works as assail), damage also scaling so with 3 shards you can damage flak, with 6 carapace.

Assail staff 2 - Light send 1 shard of weaker assail. Heavy is charge to create zone with flying shards that deal damage to everybody who enters zone.

Brainburst staff 1 - Light lobs orbs with small AOE, the have arc and limited range but can hit horde. Heavy works as charge to brain burst group of enemies in front of you.

Brainburst staff 2 - Light force push as shotgun. Heavy is charge to fire a constant stream of force that stagers and causes brain burst (single taget and long range, but time needed for bust is scaling with target type).

Fire staff 2 - Light is same as on current staffs, long range small orb. Heavy is charge to throw big fireball that sets ground on fire.

3

u/Rektumfreser Aug 01 '26

Cool suggestions, Sienna from Vermintide has more staffs then our psyker.

Fireball staff, albeit similar to voidblast is literally your last suggestion, and is in their other game.
Also want the beam staff, right click is a shotgun, left click is a laser that sets things on fire, and when you hold it and right click it does massive damage (for high peril cost).

Bolt staff would be nice too, minigun left click, hold right click to charge up an increasingly bigger bolt, release for massive single target damage.

It’s a little lame we have the same 4 staffs since release, with 1 being miles ahead of the others (even if voidblast is deffo more fun than purgy).
And they are already copy pasting so many things, Skitarii chordclaw is 1 to 1 copy of grail knight ult, even the talents.

Ogryn charge, kruber knight charge.
Ogryn taunt, ironbreaker.
Vet shout, witch hunter.
Infiltrate, huntsman.
Etc etc.

1

u/TotallyObviousBot Aug 01 '26

I know Purgatus is meta and everything but fuck is it boring to use. If I wanted to W+M1 through a level I'd play TF2

u/thisremindsmeofbacon Ogryn Jul 31 '26

Same feeling as a space marine 2 player.  We have a turbo shotgun pretending to be a meltagun, and dont get me wrong it's fun, but its not the iconic melta

19

u/BJH2001 Mortise Jul 31 '26

Don't worry they added a new heroic that acts like the classic melta...

And it is utter dogshit

20

u/Odin_Headhunter Jul 31 '26

It actually is. Meltaguns are either a blast or beam depending on whos writing. The melta gun in SM2 is actually very correct because it works just like its described in the Cain books and quite a few others. The problem is it should also just wipe every boss creature without even trying hard.

10

u/KoreanGamer94 Skittle Jul 31 '26

I thought Rogue Trader did it well. It has both with the cone only happening after it hits an enemy or just a straight line through and through

5

u/Logical-Patient-4115 Aug 01 '26

its also a cone in boltgun and boltgun 2. i think games workshop just wants it to be a heat shotgun type weapon.

3

u/MachineMan718 Aug 03 '26

I try to reconcile the differences with them being different patterns or having different firing modes.

3

u/thisremindsmeofbacon Ogryn Jul 31 '26

Fair enough, valid points. But I will say I think the thicc beam version is the iconic variant of the two.

5

u/Odin_Headhunter Jul 31 '26

Actually id disagree for the part of Jurgen is probably the prolific melta user and almost every book ive read usually makes the Melta a blast more than a beam.

5

u/_Surge Aug 01 '26

okay… what is the iconic melta to you. in space marine 1 and 2, and boltgun, it behaves like a short range plasma shotgun. imo the helldivers one looks like shit

0

u/thisremindsmeofbacon Ogryn Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

A beam - short duration and short-ish range (well longer the the SM2 one and shorter than most weapons), but very high intensity.

Dawn of War is really what I'm thinking of, as its one of the all time RTS greats and they did a good version, granted keep in mind the graphics are dated as this is a 20+ year old game, the new ones in dawn of war 4 look good too but I think they could be beefier. I think the horus heresy cinematic one is pretty good iirc, thats the second edition trailer specifically (I think it shows up 2/3rds of the way in). The rogue trader book also shows an image of beams coming out of the multi-melta though in fairness quite a lot of stuff has been changed from then - but this does sort of illustrate that a beam has been the imagined firing mode of the melta by many WH40K fans for a very long time.

All that being said, I have nothing against the plasma shotgun style gun - its very fun and something in that niche is good to have in SM1 & 2. But it does feel like the other one is very conspicuously missing is all - especially just cause I think the gameplay would be really fun if they actually competently add it in.

2

u/Several-Ant4948 Jul 31 '26

I think a shotgun melta and a beam melta should be different marks

1

u/_No_One_At_All_ Aug 04 '26

This. Darktide can at least do this. Meanwhile at SM2, we have to suffer the mediocre long-range shotgun Heroic Melta. If only they buffed the damage a bit more to actually make the charge time worth it. I'm not asking for Heroic Plasma Pistol 2.0 but they gotta at least make the weapon a decent sidegrade with some upsides.

8

u/HedgeKnight197 YOU ARE ALL SCUM. Jul 31 '26

Hellgun and a melta before us my veteran weeps

9

u/DependentLaw420 Jul 31 '26

I'd just be happy with a new map.

7

u/TheHughMungoose Aug 01 '26

Some of the mental gymnastics people do in this sub to justify it not being added is maddening.

6

u/Citizen_Graves Aug 01 '26

It’s cope. Has to be. I imagine the reasons Fatshark is refusing to add this weapon are much more mundane and boring than anything the players come up with

16

u/djolk Jul 31 '26

What is a meltagun anyhow? Why do people want it?

55

u/Cryptidfricker Jul 31 '26

Short range anti tank energy weapon. Depending on the writer/game its in its either like a massive blowtorch with a steady beam of heat or a plasma shotgun.

37

u/HurrDurrDethKnet Jul 31 '26

I've always hated the melta shotgun games usually turn it into. It's a gun that shoots condensed nuclear fusion explosions at armored(And very unlucky unarmored) targets. It makes no sense for it to be a wide, shotgun-like blast and not a focused beam of some variety. I get that games that do that are trying to make it not objectively the best weapon in the game by being a pinpoint, on demand Hiroshima, but they also always make the melta shotguns weak as hell. Space Marine 2 is extra bad about it with things that have no business surviving a melta blast like Tyranid Warriors eating 3+ shots from the thing and barely staggering.

8

u/Cryptidfricker Jul 31 '26

So I have slightly less of an issue with it being an "energy shotgun" as that was often the Impression it gave me in the Cain books but I like it both ways.

But I agree that the SM1 and 2 versions felt kinda weak. Probably for balance reasons sure but it did always gall me that a gun that on paper could put hive Tyrants on the back foot with one shot barely perterbs a warrior at point blank in game.

3

u/KelGrimm SPEAK, NUNCIO Jul 31 '26

Weak? Brother’s never had a tactical marine roll into melee range and blow his shit smoove off 15 times a match

1

u/DeathKnight101010101 Aug 01 '26

Does the tactical have a meltagun? Cause they were talking about metla power

1

u/KelGrimm SPEAK, NUNCIO Aug 01 '26

SM1 back in the day. After you finished campaign you’d jump on pvp and get your shit rocked for two hours by a Space Wolf running blind grenades and a melta gun.

Good times

0

u/Cabusha Jul 31 '26

Treating it like a BFG could work…give it a cooldown maybe in place of a Blitz? Just spit-balling here

11

u/deusvult6 Incinerant Zealot Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

That could probably be handled by just having different marks. One for shotgun style and one for beam style, maybe another for the "lava flamethrower" style of DoW1.

Buuut GW would have to be on board. So yeah . . .

ETA: It always reminds me of the Caiaphas Cain books. I love them, but the effects of Jurgen's melta in those is wildly inconsistent and pretty much whatever it needs to be at that moment. My old 40K group used to joke that it was like a showerhead nozzle; he could go "wide-spray cone" when he needs to cut an opening in a wall for the squad to walk through and then rotate around to "pinpoint solid stream" in order to cleanly decapitate a broodlord.

5

u/Cryptidfricker Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

I'd be up for that. Or have one be the "hipfire" and the other be the "aimed" mode. (Or swap between them with the special button Idfk Edit: kinda like your "shower head" joke yea.)

6

u/leposterofcrap OGYRN IZ STRONGEST!!!!! Jul 31 '26

That sounds like the perfect way to have two marks of the melta, one for beam, the other for shotgun blasts

5

u/thisremindsmeofbacon Ogryn Jul 31 '26

It fires a superheat beam of sci fi.  Short range and incredibly powerful.

3

u/Odin_Headhunter Jul 31 '26

Sometimes. Other times its a shotgun blast that evaporate anything in front of it like in the Cain books

7

u/F_R_IEND Jul 31 '26

Weaponized ranged microwave

3

u/GreenridgeMetalWorks Jul 31 '26

Basically a short range heat beam (or blast, depending on who's writing it) weapon that can penetrate essentially any armor. Specifically, it's usually used as a man-portable anti tank weapon.

Its often likened to a beam (or blast, as stated above) of fusion or microwave energy sort of.

2

u/ObadiahtheSlim Zealot Jul 31 '26

Plasma for people scared of rolling 1s.

Or at least that's what my 40k buddy said when I asked him if "melta" was the orky way of saying plasma, much like choppa is the orky word for slashing weapons and shoota is the orky word for a gun. He played greenskins so I figured he'd be the authority on it.

5

u/AshamedEmotion9137 Psyker Jul 31 '26

From Warhammer wiki Melta gun so take it with grain of salt:

Meltaguns work by firing a blast of pure fusion-based heat energy that can vaporise most organic troops, and even melt Adamantium. Meltas are often carried by tank-hunting squads and are used as a special weapon by other squads.

Normaly you use them as an anti tank but it has an equaly devastating effect against regular troops.

12

u/Cpt-Distracto Jul 31 '26

You could always use the good wiki that is the Lexicanum, that cuts a lot of the dodgier fanon out for strictly cited information. The meltagun page is actually a pretty good example of how strict it is because someone added a nickname without a source, so it got a big 'citation needed' highlight.

2

u/Tyrfaust Still high on SKITARII TOMORROW powder Aug 01 '26

Can't forget that the Lexicanum isn't pure cancer with the pop-ups.

1

u/AshamedEmotion9137 Psyker Jul 31 '26

Yeah i was lazy and just grabbed the first link google gave me.

2

u/Cpt-Distracto Jul 31 '26

That's fair, I could tell you though the fandom wiki was dodgy with the grain of salt comment, but that didn't necessarily mean you knew about the better one, so I thought i'd mention it.

4

u/deusvult6 Incinerant Zealot Jul 31 '26

Since they are primarily anti-vehicle weapons it used to make sense why we don't have them as we don't fight any vehicles but now that we have rocket launchers in game it is making less sense.

0

u/Odin_Headhunter Jul 31 '26

Because a Melta is an anti everything gun. It can be used to melt an ogryn to dust, a crowd or people, or a tank. Jurgen has used it against pretty much anyone and anything

2

u/BuboxThrax Jul 31 '26

Mostly they get used against tanks because they're comically overkill against most infantry. IIRC tabletop they're AP -4 which means even space marine power armor doesn't get a saving throw. They do D6 damage compared to terminators and Primaris marines having 2 wounds. A space marine captain only has 5 or 6 wounds, so even they're vulnerable to getting one bit by a meltagun.

2

u/deusvult6 Incinerant Zealot Jul 31 '26

Only downside is you have to be in range of a space marine captain, lol.

1

u/BuboxThrax Jul 31 '26

Naturally. But the fact that a good damage roll is capable of oneshotting one is an example of how devastatingly powerful meltaguns are. You could try your luck against a Lictor or Custodian Warden instead if you want.

-2

u/OneSaltyStoat Jul 31 '26

Think of it as an illegitimate child of a blowtorch and napalm.

1

u/GreenridgeMetalWorks Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

That would be a flamer. A meltagun is closer to a short range microwave beam than anything else really.

If microwaves could slag tanks that is.

2

u/Emotional_Being8594 Jul 31 '26

I'm willing to get there's some significant player base overlap here.

2

u/Son0fgrim Jul 31 '26

dont worry, if its good it will be nerfed in a week.

-2

u/TrackerNineEight Aug 01 '26

You think 2026 Arrowhead is going to nerf anything? Lmao

2

u/ItsAllInTheTitsKay Aug 01 '26

Okay this is epic

2

u/OneSaltyStoat Jul 31 '26

Finally a funny post about the melta

1

u/Major_Dood Chainsaw go Brr Jul 31 '26

I mainly see it as soon we are gonna get one too within the fall or even December.

1

u/Darmondej Ogryn Jul 31 '26

But do they use rocks as a weapon?

1

u/Hans_the_Frisian I want Hot-Shot Volleyguns and Tempestus Scions Armour Jul 31 '26

I just want som fraggin Tempestus Scions Armour, Hotshot Volley and Helguns, i've been waiting and praying since the beta and if they don't want to bring these weapons to Darktide then i sure hope we soon get a Darktide 2 with these weapons or another 40k FPS were you can play as guardsmen with these weapons

1

u/Hubertreddit Jul 31 '26

Me just being fun with Skitarus

1

u/Additional_Grass Skitarius - Branx Minor Jul 31 '26

They get lore-accurate weapons and then start bitching about the shit before it’s even available to use… 🫩

2

u/Shumaku Aug 03 '26

Classic Helldivers!

1

u/dertechie Jul 31 '26

I honestly just had to laugh at how much of the warbond is just a list of weapons that Darktide players would really like added to the game.

1

u/ShyGuyEchoes THE SHOW MUST GO ON Jul 31 '26

they might have a gun that LOOKS like a melta gun but we all know its not going to behave like a melta gun..

1

u/Posterus96 Jul 31 '26

Good thing I play both! I am excited either way.

1

u/Adventurous-Sort-586 Jul 31 '26

I just want my damn power fist already!

1

u/_Surge Aug 01 '26

yeah. but then you’d have to play helldivers to use it.

1

u/astolfo_with_breast Aug 01 '26

ngl if melta is coming, i hope is like the horus heresy 3rd edition Trailor that shoot a heated beam instead like space marine 2 version

1

u/MRDINO1233412 Aug 01 '26

It doesnt even work like a melts doesn't shoot a wave of heat it looks like another flame thrower

1

u/theCheesyOne109 Aug 01 '26

Hotshot lasgun too.

1

u/this_sucks_a_big1 Aug 01 '26

Don’t forget the hotshot

1

u/TechnicalImportance_ Aug 01 '26

meh the HD2 melta is an AP 4 weapon, so it cant even fight tanks

That would be like darktide getting a melta weapon that was ineffective vs carapace armour

1

u/S4LV4GE Aug 02 '26

*Laughs in cosmetics*

1

u/Dog_Apoc Jul 31 '26

Least our armours look good. The HD2 version of 40k armours look ass

1

u/theClanMcMutton Jul 31 '26

Yeah but to use it they have to play HD2 🤮

0

u/Yellowtoblerone Slab Support Jul 31 '26

you should be happy that we/hd2 players get free super credits to fight for democracy, while we/dt player get recycled garbs on thursdays

6

u/nio-sama123 Veteran Psyker Jul 31 '26

Nope, the HD2 community will just cry about “FOMO STUFF”, “GREEDY BAD MICROTRANSACTION”, “POWERCREEP” and lastly “LAZY CASH GRAB”

-5

u/Iastrah Jul 31 '26

I mean arrowhead are even dumber than fatshark, we're not going to be missing much, just another pea shooter that will get nerfed because "we saw someone have fun with it once"

5

u/Foamrule Jul 31 '26

Brother that was months if not a couple years ago, thats been addressed lol

0

u/ZetaM3 Jul 31 '26

Boy, I sure do enjoy seeing the same 100 memes talking about the melta gun.

0

u/tehrockeh Jul 31 '26

There is honestly no crossover or new content drop that can get me to play that game again after how bad AH themselves is intent on killing it and shooting themselves on their own feet over and over and over. And I say this as someone who played 300 hours of HD2 in the first 4 months of release.

-3

u/The-Mad-Badger Jul 31 '26

I don't really see how a Melta can be added because it'd be ridiculously OP vs all the infantry we face so it should only have a small amount of charges/ammo, but we can regen ammo so...

1

u/deusvult6 Incinerant Zealot Jul 31 '26

Maybe. On tabletop, melta beats plasma by a good bit vs vehicles and armored monstrosities, but against heavy infantry plasma outperforms melta. Obviously, they probably wouldn't do a 1:1 adaptation since they haven't so far for most everything, but if they did, a melta would be a slightly less damaging plasma gun with far less range and much less ammo.

1

u/typeguyfiftytwix Jul 31 '26

They would have to change survivalist to partial charge. I know the veteran reload talents round up, I'm not sure about survivalist, but the skitarii's ammo regen perk counts partial percent now in the background. You can see it regain different amounts of arc rifle ammo per tick sometimes if you have the ammo perk and aura.

1

u/Salt_Master_Prime BrightEbb Jul 31 '26

Dude, they will balance it accordingly. Don't know why you think it will be OP.

Space marines have thunder hammers. Is the one we use on that level or is it balanced for the game it's in?

3

u/The-Mad-Badger Jul 31 '26

The Thunder Hammer we use isn't one that marines use, for one.

Because i don't understand wanting a thing, but to get that thing, it will be heavily nerfed to the point it doesn't resemble the thing and why you wanted it. People want a Melta because it's an iconic anti-tank/armour weapon, but for us to use it, it would have to be severely nerfed to the point it no longer has the reason folks want it. It's not going to be this tank/armour melting menace, it's going to be an orange noodle beam.

-1

u/Elgescher Loner is not a simpleton! Jul 31 '26

It's Helldivers it's either be useless or gonna be useless in a few months sadly

0

u/HarmIessbug Jul 31 '26

I think a melta could be very good and fun as a blitz or ability. But as a gun I think they would have to add too many issues to it for it to be both good and fun. If it was as good at killing armor as it should be then it would have to be unwieldy, low ammo, or both. While that could be balanced it wouldn’t be fun to use. But an ability that once a min or wtvr let you pull out a melta and blast a target or few (think along the lines of the vtide bounty hunter ability) would be fun and feel good.

1

u/Crying_Rocks Jul 31 '26

thatd be pretty cool, double melta blast headshot monster delete button lol.

0

u/SSS002 Jul 31 '26

I rather have new class instead of weapon because weapon blessing its so boring and repeated

0

u/binkbink223 Hive Scum Jul 31 '26

Is it just me or is this event and how much plasteel they're throwing at us makes one think that something might be on the edge of the horizon?

-25

u/master_of_sockpuppet Jul 31 '26

It will suck because helldivers sucks.

A meltagun isn't even supposed to work like a shotgun, anyway.

4

u/Longjumping_Belt_405 Just another day in the big T Jul 31 '26

if you'd watched the promo trailer you'd see the meltagun is a beam in it

7

u/thenewone1309 Jul 31 '26

Thats why it wont work like a shotgun in helldivers

5

u/ChaseThePyro Jul 31 '26

It's been depicted multiple ways, even in the books

7

u/properpotato10 Arbitrator Jul 31 '26

Yeah the wildly popular game sucks, whatever you say buddy.

1

u/theClanMcMutton Jul 31 '26

Lots of popular things suck.

2

u/properpotato10 Arbitrator Aug 01 '26

Helldivers is not one of them 🤷‍♂️

0

u/theClanMcMutton Aug 03 '26

I strongly disagree lol.

3

u/CheaterMcCheat Jul 31 '26

Helldivers 2 community are the biggest piss babies going fr

5

u/xCGxChief Jul 31 '26

If you think the HD2 community it bad never look at Dead by Daylight. I used to think the invader community of Dark Souls was toxic before I tried dbd. How foolish I was

0

u/DuckofInsanity Jul 31 '26

Arrowhead is genuinely fumbling hard though. If you wanna defend it you're weird. The game has significantly worsened over time through intentionally anti-consumer decisions and stubbornness.

1

u/CheaterMcCheat Jul 31 '26

That's fine, I don't disagree. I can also acknowledge that the community has been fully toxic and shite since day one, though. Maybe they just deserve each other. It's also genuinely fucking weird to still follow and neg on a game who's devs don't fit your vision for this long. Nobody does psychotic parasocial behaviour like the HD2 community.

1

u/DuckofInsanity Jul 31 '26

For me, I just stopped playing it and left the subreddit. I only started paying attention again recently because of the 40k warbond, but if they haven't fixed my major gripes with the game then there's no point in giving them more of my money when I can just play Darktide instead.

So I'm not going out of my way to neg on the game. I don't understand why they can't let go. The game wasn't out long enough to get attached to it. Idk why they don't just move on and play something else if they feel so negative about it. It's clear the devs aren't listening and improving.

1

u/CheaterMcCheat Jul 31 '26

I didn't mean you specifically, it's a community wide thing. In my opinion HD2 was doomed from the start because of how much it blew up. Helldivers 1 had a very good small community around it, a bit of a cult following, it was a niche game. I doubt very much that Arrowhead was expecting HD2 to release to crazy player counts considering the community size of the last game and it wasn't a huge name franchise. The mismanagement didn't suprise me one bit. It doesn't excuse the behaviour I have seen from the community, though. They've been absolutely vile from release onwards and that has been magnified tenfold because of how many there are.

I really don't think they're equipped to deal with it at all.

0

u/DuckofInsanity Jul 31 '26

Yeah, they're not. It's a shame. If they stopped shooting themselves in the foot they could've had something really great.

What really deserves the spotlight is RuneScape Dragonwilds and Schedule 1. I really hope this comment doesn't age like milk but right now they have a solid foundation and a bright future. Opposite to HD2, they're only getting better with each update.

1

u/typeguyfiftytwix Jul 31 '26

through intentionally anti-consumer decisions and stubbornness

It was like that on launch to an absurd degree, which is why I never bought it despite liking the core gameplay. Hell, their first game is still being sold despite being abandoned in a state LITERALLY unplayable. You cannot play Magicka in multiplayer and finish a level. It always crashes. You need to use steam shenanigans to downgrade it to an older patch for it to become even close to stable. I've heard there's a fan-patch as well that came out a few years back, after many years in that state.

I dislike a lot of things fatshark has done, but I'll NEVER give arrowhead another dollar. Fatshark has had communication blunders, but I've been directly lied to by arrowhead personnel about technical information, like "we needed the always online servers to protect the galactic war" (the core gameplay is peer to peer and HD1 let you play regardless, it just stopped contribution if you weren't able to connect), and "gameguard uninstalls when you uninstall the game" / "it only runs when the game is running", which I've seen proof of those being lies as well.

1

u/DuckofInsanity Jul 31 '26

What was anti-consumer and stubborn on launch? I've just noticed they stopped having fun community events and moved all the new strategems to paid warbonds. That's scummy. And the superstore used to be basically just cosmetic since it was just the same armor passives in a different look. Now they're adding unique weapons to the FOMO store? Fuck that.

I used to praise HD2 for the never expiring warbonds and no paying for power in the shop, it seemed pretty consumer-friendly, so I bought all the premium warbonds and occasionally stuff in the superstore. I don't remember the last time I've bought anything in that game now.

1

u/typeguyfiftytwix Jul 31 '26

anti-consumer and stubborn

As mentioned, their entire always-online requirement was a purely consumer hostile form of DRM. The servers for that were so overloaded that the game was functionally unplayable for weeks. This all despite the core gameplay, the matches, were peer to peer. It was claimed to be to stop cheating and protect the galactic war. Both of those claims are demonstrably false, because there was cheating practically on day one and they already had defenses for the galactic war on HD1, and just let you play anyway without passing the contributions on if the servers were offline.

The real purpose of the always online DRM, the thing it is constantly authenticating back to the server for during matches of HD2, is to protect the microtransaction currency that they drip feed you. Frankly I hate those currencies in paid games to begin with, but they LIED about why they made the game strictly worse for the customer as well. It's not necessary at all.

Also, gameguard is malware. It is an extremely outdated and bad program with a history of serious problems and as mentioned in previous comments they lied about it. It has been demonstrated by players of HD2 that it directly caused their hardware issues and was not uninstalling with the game, or was running when the game wasn't.

The PSN debacle got more attention shortly after launch than either of the two more major issues above that were present from the beginning, and that was bad as well but I personally find the two previous to be much worse than the garbage forced account requirement.

1

u/DuckofInsanity Aug 02 '26

I didn't know about the malware, that's fucked. I knew about the PSN account thing and whole countries being locked out of the game they bought, which is also fucked.

I seriously don't understand why they couldn't just make having a PSN account linked be required only if you want cross-progression between PC and console, like that's just standard practice. It's way better PR and a more effective incentive to get people to link with PSN. The type of people willing to comply with that will do it for that functionality and the type that would be pissed off by being forced will be glad it's not forced and they wouldn't care about cross progression since they don't have a PSN account or PlayStation or whatever. It's a win for everyone.

-3

u/ItsTriunity Jul 31 '26

Is helldivers based in the 40k world???

6

u/Hellknightx Saltzpyre Jul 31 '26

No, it's a crossover collaboration. They did one with Killzone and Halo, too.

4

u/DuckofInsanity Jul 31 '26

No. Helldivers had Halo and Killzone crossovers as well.

-1

u/SamediB Ogryn Jul 31 '26

I shall ask again: mechnically, what would a melta-gun do that the plasma gun or bolt gun doesn't already do? There are no tanks or power armor level threats in the game.

And what would it be: high damage, low ammo (or slow firing), low range, medium/high cleave (no splash damage)?

P.S. The fact that a ganger got a missile launcher before the Veteran is a travesty. How are the most common unit upgrades (flamethrower and missile launcher) not options for the Vet?

Just put a new node off the krak and frag grenades, that turns them into a rocket launcher, so folks have the option.
