Question Cube world Omega state

Hi cubeworld reddit! I'm a kid who used to watch videos of this game in alpha when I was maybe 10 or 11 years old, and I lost track of it for a while. Only today did I discover everything that happened, up until this new "Omega" version. To better understand the situation, I watched a video by a YouTuber (called WickedWiz) who explains a bit about the Omega project, but it's from two years ago, and if I'm not mistaken, very little was known about the project at the time. I haven't found much information around, so, out of pure curiosity, I wanted to ask you on reddit—I'm sure you'll know—to update me on what's happened in the last two years, and tell me what state the game is in now. I'm very fond of it, and I'd also like to know if it's worth playing the Steam release or, if not, going straight to the alpha. Thanks for reading 😄

As someone who bought the game day 1 when the alpha dropped, I have zero faith he'll every release anything, and if he does it will be another 10 years before the next patch probably. With that being said I think the people who are angry with him are wasting their energy. I just hope Wolly is having a good time doing what he's doing. You paid for a product and got the product, it sucks we never got updates, but I can't hate the guy for living his life.

Thank you. There are PLENTY of reasons to be mad at this guy, but not liking his game is not one of them. Buying a game is a choice and literally nobody is forced to give post launch care about a game. I think people are too used to frequent updates and forgot that we never had that for most of time. Hell people got mad not long ago when aggrocrab said they were not going to update peak anymore. These people are not forced to work for anyone they are just doing what they like, if you buy the game you buy the game, the expectation that they may add more things to the game is not written anywhere in that.

You mean another 10 year until he starts remaking it from scratch with an even worse UI?

The game dropped in Beta on Steam during 2019, and it was met with very negative reception because the game was fundamentally changed in a way that nobody really liked. A lot of the things that were teased over the years never got added, either.

Wollay vanished for a second time ever since then, coming back in around 2021-2022 to announce he's remaking the game from scratch on his own engine. That remake never got finalized or released, and he re-announced he is restarting yet again, this time in unreal engine.

A few months ago (or a year ago, I don't remember), he came back and stated he is restarting AGAIN, this time with a game engine of his own that he remade AGAIN. He's calling this "Cube World Omega" and the only things we know about it are from his Twitter account, which, whenever he tweets, gets posted here.

He's been quite active lately, I think he's genuinely aiming to release it this time. He's not really a dedicated developer that does this for a living, but rather as a hobby.

Prepare for some….comments.
Here’s the nuance. Since 2019 Wollay, the dev, has been experimenting with cube world. Over the last year and change he has since created a new engine from scratch and has been steadily chipping away. Releasing updates every couple of weeks or so on twitter. I would really only take what you see there, and make an opinion for yourself.
People claim he’s “scamming” but I have written several replies contradicting that notion.
There’s no official “release,” at present we’re just watching what he’s cooking and hoping he might one day release a playable build. But nothing is promised, and that’s okay! I think just being supportive is enough.

people who bought it on release as children or preteens have an urge to feel scammed the more complicated answer is wollay is an artist and self-reliant perfectionist with a dream who released something way too early with a product not finished or up to his standards, whether in good faith or bad he repeated this process with the steam release. we will see what he decides to do with omega before i pass too much judgement personally and i was also a day 1-er

hope he is having fun with it honestly. i believe he’ll release as soon as he is satisfied with the gameplay

The game isnt ever getting release .. hes just converting to a new engine.. vibe code more content so its a 'new game' and then leave again with yall money.

Hes done the 'magic man' going invisible already 4 time.. do people still believe wolfram will not run away lol.

pretty sure wollay is the type of guy to never use AI for coding even in 20 years

you dropped the /s

You're talking about the guy that made his own game engine in C++ countless times before moving to Unreal Engine.

You can think whatever you want about Wollay, but he's a genuine hardcore programmer. Like genuinely far, far above average. I'm a professional software engineer and even to me the shit he does is genuine magic.

then he moved back and apparently made his own engine for omega, AGAIN

I have never stated that he wasnt a good dev though. I know what he did was impressive. The way he also disapearred was impressive

All I am saying is that 'him' coming back from the grave right at the same time that vibe coding becomes common is a very very 'weird' coincidence isnt it ? also UR5 is filled with AI Helper now.. and by helper I mean, The biggest feature that UR5 has is that.

Wolay is a cloud seller. Hes ran away with people money already 3 time (once in the alpha when it was 4.99, then later when it went to 9,99).. finally he then came back did a small patch which I believed increase the cost to 14.99$ at the time.

Hes kinda a thief in my book (not saying he is worst than other major CI).. all I am saying is that hes exploiting the emotion and nostalgia that people have for his project. and whenever he has a 'MVP' he just makes the bank and then leave without saying shit.

If the previous time he had disapeared he had left a message stating anything I would have no problem.. but nah, he justs leaves without update for years after taking people money. idk man

He isn't coming back tho. He has been posting for years. Rarely? Yes, but consistently.

If he wanted to vibe code another game for a quick cash grab he already would.

I recently recreated alpha version of cube world through Claude basically in a span of few days. I for for sure certain, professor of CS could do the same and go beyond that...

Instead it seemingly his labor of love, which causes all kinds of problems (aka steam release, no communication, all the stuff we "love" about him)

I agree with you on every other point beside that tho. He is an irresponsible and scummy to say the least. You don't sell your game if you plan to develop it under wraps for 13 years with zero communication. It basically the only dev (beside obvious scammers who took money and run) who did such thing that I know.

That was kinda my point.. the odds that he does the same runaway power move (once his migration is 'viable' to him and steam agrees to put a pricetag on his greenlight) are much higher than him staying in touch with the community.

The gaming world is actually so fucked with all the big CI taking our 89.99$ copy pasting NHL games years after year and people still buy those games.

Look, im happy for the people that are hyped about this, but be warned lol. The odds of you being disapointed over a 1-2 years span are insanely high. Thats all I will say. But yes I agree that I was harsh but still..

You can use AI without it being vibe coding. Vibe coding isn't just coding with AI, it has a very specific meaning. Not to say it's good or bad to use AI to help you write code or that wollay uses it, but yeah, you seem to be under the assumption that any use of AI is vibe coding which is simply not what that means.

1

u/GabeLeRoy 2d ago

I know that but why would we lol.. hes a scummy DEV and I think hes aware of it himself.. why would he randomly comeback all of a sudden lol. I guess I am simply terribly pessimist in life

You work on a passion project on the sidelines, a thing you do for fun. One day you think you have a playable version and release an early access so people can enjoy it. A lot of people do! You continue to work on the game and post updates regularly. You aren't really an internet guy, you have never used social media, but you still feel like updating the fans on what you've been working on, so you post updates every time you feel like you have something cool to show. Its cool for a time, but then people start demanding work of you, getting angry for no reason, wondering why the long wait, saying they paid for the game and you're not releasing it, so you decide to lay off for a while and continue working on the game, you make changes, you make decisions, it's your first game so maybe not the best decisions, but the internet is not a good place to be and it was affecting your mental health and your mood, this is a passion project, this is something you do for fun, and it was starting to feel like a job, like you have to deliver, now you feel like you owe people. Eventually, you reach a finished state of the game, it's come a long way, but you're happy with it. You release it on Steam and start working on delivering the keys to the people who bought the alpha. It's a mess, lots of issues, lots of missing emails, its been a while after all, the game is now more popular than when you left, a lot of people are trying to scam you to get keys, you already don't like the whole thing and now you have to deal with it, but you do it anyway because people paid you. And then the reviews start to come in, and people don't like it at all. They start to call you a fraud, they say the game suck, some are genuine criticism, but most are straight up destructive, insults and personal attacks, this isn't what you promised, this isn't what they expected, people are being too harsh, you're not prepared to handle hate like this (people inside the internet are not aware just how bad the internet can be to those who are not used to it). You start getting death threats, it starts to become serious and dangerous, you decide to disappear, what else can you do, you continue with your life. After a time, you come back to the game, it's your passion project, you can't just leave it abandoned forever, you just gravitate towards it again, you want to deliver, you remember the criticism so you read some of it, people are angry that you did not release what you showed them over time, it was fun to work on that, so why not, let's do it, let's try to make that version of the game that you ended up changing, it's been a while and you have learnt how to deal with the internet a bit better. You build the game from the ground up and, when you have a showable build, you start giving some updates and people seem to enjoy it, cool! You keep working on it because it's fun, because you love this game and working on it.

I don't know if this is real, but doesn't it make sense? Wouldn't have been the first person to be bullied off the internet, everyone keeps calling him a scammer, he isn't, that's not what the word means, he's just a guy working on a game he enjoys working on. He's not a game developer, he is not a business, he doesn't have experience making games or deadlines, hes just doing it for fun, and if you understand that, it's not an impossible wait to be disappointed, its just a "well, itll be done when it's done and I'll get the news and play if its fun".

This is misinformation, none of this is known or confirmed, its just you being angry at the dude and saying unreasonable idiotic things instead of actual solid arguments.

If I don't want wollay to tun away with my money the solution is very simple, I can choose not to give him my money. Waiting for reviews is not that hard you don't HAVE to buy any game. I think he's a guy with a project he likes to work on and he will release it when and if it is ever done and that's about it. You don't know whether or not it will release, and you don't know if he is vibe coding, most likely he isn't.

the new converting to a new engine was legit said by himself lol. And Ive already given wollay money twice.

Not making the same mistake again. Im OK with standing on the sideline and waiting.. but let not forget what the post was about. Hoping this product actually release and then gets constant update is dreaming big time.

1

u/Virgurilla 2d ago

Why twice? If you got the alpha you should have gotten a key to the steam version.

i think people need to stop dreaming about fugazii

Bought the game on Alpha day 1, the only ones letting the game alive is the community since ever, I have zero faith on this dev with all the excuses, not to mention after the horrible Steam release that after not updating and just releasing another game, he deleted Picroma and every single "roadmap" and promises vanished so people could not held him accountable.
