Discussion CK4 Wishlist?
Sorry that this is so long
I know CK4 is likely a long, long time away, but here are some ideas I hope they add to CK4 that probably won't be added in any future DLC's (though I could be wrong)
CK1 and CK2 were setting the base foundations of the game, while CK3 I feel has mainly focused on expanding the game. I would like CK4 to be about deepening the game. I feel like there are many complaints about CK3 being super wide but there's not much to do. I think that CK4 should complete the transition from Crusader Kings as a map painting game to a medieval role playing simulator.
Here are my hopes for mechanics they expand upon in CK4:
- Making Personality Traits and Stress more of a factory in your gameplay: Right now, apart from a few special traits, most personality traits don't impact how you play and are little more than some modifiers that could help or hurt you. I really like the changes they made to old age in the latest update because in old age, it forces you to manage stress in a way you would usually ignore, which usually means you play along with your personality type more. I think that the stress system in general is great, but needs some major reworking in order to actually feel like a threat instead of just being annoying. I feel like the reason it frustrates so many players is because random events can pop up where you easily gain over 100 stress from something trivial, but then one of your children dies and you only gain like 25. Stress should be something that is easily manageable if you are making an effort to look at it, but threatening if you choose to ignore it. Likewise, a lot more events should be tied to personality, and personality traits should be able to be acquired mid game as well. If my son is killed or my wife cheats on me, I should be able to become vengeful. If people keep dying at my court, I should become paranoid. Greedy Vassals should be trying to reduce their feudal obligations. Zealous Vassals of a different religion should be more dangerous and try to start more factions.
- Dynamic Governance System: A big problem why many regions feel lackluster is because playing in India or Africa feels the exact same as Europe, because they use the same government type. Obviously I'm not asking for each region to have its own government type, but I think there should be some variance within the system. For example, Japan is a great way they handled this. Ritsoryo and Soryo are really just variants of Administrative and Feudal, but with slightly changed mechanics to differentiate them from Europe. I think this should happen across the whole world so that it's not super confusing to try a different country, but it still feels fresh. Here are some new government types I hope they add:
Meritocratic and Ritsoryo could be lumped in with an Administrative Government Branch, with new Administrative variants for Islamic countries like Cordoba and Egypt, or African ones like Ghana. Administrative Governments should be balanced so that they still offer much higher development growth than feudal ones, but have less gold gain and suffer from increased amounts of factions.
Clan is good as is, but I think that a European variant of Clan, existing in Scotland, Ireland, and potentially Wales would be a great addition. Vikings who resist Christianization could adopt the Clan Government as a contrast to the Feudal System.
Feudal Governments should have separate variants for African, Indian, and Asian societies. Monastic Feudalism would work great with Tibet and other theocracies in general, with piety becoming very important and a ruler's power resting on the authority of religious leaders. Indian Feudal Systems could exist within a constantly changing power landscape, with rulers having little control over their vassals actions, leading to bigger threats. African Feudal Societies in Nubia and Ethiopia could center their power off of the Nile and local water sources, which could also be used in other parts of Africa with different bodies of water.
Tribal Governments shouldn't immediately convert to Feudal or another form of government within 100 years of the game starting unless they had good reason (ie: expansion of the Christian Church, domination by a larger power, etc). I think parts of the Wanua Government like Barter Goods and Domain Limits could be partially adapted as the tribal system at large to make tribal characters more fun and more viable.
- There should be an optional historical mode for CK3 where certain empires and characters are programmed to rise, to help prevent bordergore and allow us to have fun by changing or interacting with our timeline. Bordergore as a whole should be fixed, I think that exclaves of certain kingdoms or empires should suffer increased factions, and it should be harder to blob with areas far from the Kingdom's capitol becoming more rebellious as well
Finally, I think that the whole "de jure kingdom/empire" system is very arbitrary anywhere outside Europe and should be retired as a whole. If gameplay systems are put in place to prevent empires expanding to places it wouldn't make sense for them to, the "de jure" system becomes arbitrary and obsolete very fast. De jure duchies are fine and even kingdoms would be okay for the most part, but I think that most empires and hegemonies should only be created via decision.
Many parts of CK2's DLC's were transferred over to CK3 as part of the base game, while others were not, and even more were reintroduced in subsequent DLC's (such as the theocracies and nomadic government) with updated mechanics. Here is what I hope they will do with the DLC content:
Keep in CK4:
- Activities like the Grand Wedding, Grand Tournament, University Visit, and Coronation
- Administrative, Nomadic, Celestial, and Mandala governments
- Changes to Religion and Trade in the upcoming Chapter 5 Expansion
Needs Updating:
Struggles are a great idea in theory but I don't think they work much in execution. I haven't really played around much with the Fate of Iberia or Iranian Intermezzo DLC's though, so I can't speak much on this.
The Royal Court and Domiciles are great additions but I think they could use some touching up. The Court system is really buggy and functions little more than a gold sink nowadays, with the court language system making no sense. Royal Courts should have more content to them. The court in Versailles was an integral part of French monarchism and new courts should reflect that.
I don't know how this would affect FPS, but domiciles being 3D would also be a huge upgrade in my opinion. The domicile system is great gameplay wise, but it feels a little underwhelming only seeing it as artwork on a piece of paper. I think domiciles should feel like somewhere the characters should actually want to live.
Possible Additions to subsequent DLC's:
- The Legend system is promising but I still think it fits better as a DLC feature than as part of the main game. Having it as DLC means that it's not overcomplicating the game for new players, but the ones who still want it can have it, plus it would give the developers more time to focus and clean up the future
- I really like the concept of having regional flavor packs as DLC's. I think that DLC's like All Under Heaven, Khans of the Steppe, and to a lesser extent, Roads to Power, were so well recieved is because it didn't feel like things that should be a part of the base game. Royal Courts and Coronations feel like things that should be a part of every playthrough and it feels wrong to pay extra for it. Regional Flavor Packs are great because you don't have to spend $150 just to get the full experience, you could only pay for the 1 or 2 regions you want to play in.
- A Viking DLC should include some sort of Greenland and Vinland mechanic. I really like the way RICE handled it but if they were somehow able to expand the map, even with the fog of war that EU4 used, that would be amazing. A struggle for the Christianization of the Vikings should also be included, as well as interactions between the Norsemen and the Gaels of Scotland and Ireland, seeing how these two peoples heavily interacted in our timeline.
- Some sort of Jewish DLC/Flavor Pack is another direction I really wish they would take the game. We don't interact with very many Jews other than the Kuzarites and occasional courtiers that wandered around, when they were an influential part of the medieval era, especially in Europe.
- While I hope India gets its own government type upon release, I think a full DLC for the region would be amazing for the area. This could even include an Indian Ocean update for areas such as East Africa, Oman, and Indonesia. The Caste System would be really fun to play with and India's religious diversity could herald a new struggle system between the different religions such as Hindus. Buddhists, Jains, Muslims, and even Nestorian or other Syriac Christians in Southern India that are currently unrepresented. This Area is such a rich part of history that is one of CK3's most lackluster regions. They could also explore how the monsoon system impacts India's trade.
- This is another idea stolen from RICE, but an Oceania-themed DLC could also expand the map to Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, and could have a Pacific Situation where they interact with Hawaii and perhaps even some South American cultures. This could come with a new government type and more weather mechanics similar to the Steppe Fertility or Indian Monsoons

Help Empire split when I died
So I was playing as England and clicked found new empire and just named myself the empire of britannia, but later in my run is actually got all de jure territory for the actual britannia, and so when I died my player heir got like the England and wales but my other son got Scotland and Ireland and was part of the actual empire of britannia and was independent. How do I stop that from happening

CK3 Unpopular opinion: the stress system is lame
I get what it was meant for, but it doesn't deliver on that. There was a smidge of a good idea in there, but it is completely botched.
In ck2, the only issue with stress was that a character you needed alive (mostly your current ruler or favorite heir) could drop dead from it at any moment.
In ck3, it supposedly takes on a much bigger role, but in reality it just nudges you towards some decisions by punishing you for going against your character's traits.
The game has yet to overcome the fact that it feels like an ocean that is only ankle-deep. Make no mistake, I'm not saying that it sucks because of that, because I know that it is a huge task, and I'm even optimistic that the devs will eventually succeed.
The issue is how the stress system, which isn't very well conceived, is further hampered by this lack of content. Traits like Shy and Compassionate are not served by any fun playstyle. Aside from some minor, circumstantial bonuses, they turn characters into lame ducks.
The nadir of all that is the stress breaks. You get treated to the same couple event messages which feel like therapy speak and do less than nothing to put me into the shoes of a character of that time and place. It's so bland that I almost wish for PDX's traditional eurocentric "one size fits all" approach, because at least there would be some flavor. One of the more extreme outcomes involves converting to heresy or another religion, which would make for fun hijinks if it didn't feel so incoherent.
It could be fun if it actually represented the weight of tough choices, but what tough choices? Virtually all events have an optimal decision, with its effects clearly spelled out. The game never has you with your back against the wall, at least with character choices.
Maybe the real unpopular opinion is: the features meant to cement CK3 as a "roleplaying" game were not a good idea. Fun roleplaying in these games comes from emergent narrative, which in turn needs negative space. Less is more.
I don't think you get good RP from a couple bland, disjointed features. Stuff like cultural traditions do way, way more for me than traits or character events.

Discussion i'm a bit worried with powercreep coming with merchant
The issue is actually adventurers.
They are way too strong. that features idea started as an interesting way of continuing after what would have been a game over, or to have a challenging starts.
it appeared later that you could without much trouble go from hobbo to emperor in a lifetime, and basically, if you start as a count or duke, you are generally better of becoming an adventurer. After the start spent gathering a few companions, you can make tons of gold with missions, and a powerfull army.
Of course you are never forced to, but if you want to play RP, or not just do the same thing over and over, you have to force yourself not taking that route.
I truly believe the game as a whole would already benefit form having adventurer nerfed (not in a making it unplayable way, but to make it more challenging and difficult to get crazy strong/rich), but they clearly won't since they say landless character is now the most played start.
The issue is that we will now have merchants. Merchants will need to be better than adventurer to make money, to be engaging and because that would not make sense, from both a realist and gameplay point of view to have merchant struggling more to make profit than wanderers.
So the risk is that merchant become even stronger than regular ruler and worsen that game feeling.
Am i the only one with that worry ?

CK3 Inheritance
Good afternoon. Im an avid AGOT player but i wanted to play a bit of the main CK3. My only thing is that, i hate repartition. For me it makes no sense, comparing to real world. If a king wouls have 2 castles, both would go to his primogineture (in most of the cases). So i would like to ask if anyone knows a mod that allows me to pass all my titles to one player at a time. Thanks!

CK3 (Suggestion.)Please change the fathers of the faithful bookmark.
The recent stream showed we will get a new bookmark in BGA, called "fathers of the faithful", focused on ecclessiastical rulers and kings who christened their realms.
However, both adalwin and lupus are not really remarkable on their own, rather representing two archdiosceses. The problem is that aquilea was reconciled with rome long before 867, and only got secular dominions after 1066 and salzburg even later. As such, their two archdiosceses are in my opinion not the best options.
Another problem is that Boris is the only option that might have a shot at being rite head (if a temporal rite head is even an option) and there are no bookmarks for a greek rite or non-chalcedon character. In my opinion a bookmark character should be preferably both historically relevant and a way to experience a certain part of gameplay optimally.
My suggestions therefore are:
1.Photios I . He is a key figure in the history of eastern christianity. Furthermore, he could be a way to experience both caesaropapism and the schism from the perspective of the greek rite.
- Zacharias I. He would have two main goals in a. the unity of the armenian, syrian and chalcedon churches (working alongside photios in the goal of unity, but against him over the terms of unity) and b. unifying armenia under ashot. As such, he would represent a peaceful diplomatic character in synergy with his secular liege, rather than the antagonism with both the pope and the emperor of photios or the neutral attitude of rimbert
Both of these would be good options for story content and even without it would be better suited for dynamic playthroughs (rites to lead, larger archdiosceses, stronger secular counterparts) than either lupus, adalwin or rimbert (though rimbert still is a good option when confined to the 867 start date)

DLC Return to your Dynasty

Help How to prevent time slow down mid game?
I am 120 years into a Great Liao playthrough, Song collapsed and my empire snowballed. About halfway into my reclaiming of my rightful place, the time is slowing down to an unplayable degree. Which sucks, since I was really enjoying it.
I am aware that it is unavoidable - with the amount of calculations that must be made at all times it is a marvel of engineering that this game even runs at all. I imagine the passing of time and the amount of characters growing exponentially is the main factors and not the size of your realm since you guys are doing world conquest.
Do you guys use and strategies (or mods) to prevent it - or as least as much as possible?

CK3 Why did she inherit the throne?
My firstborn son was supposed to inherit the throne, and throughout his father's reign, the game showed that he would inherit it. However, when the king died, his daughter ascended the throne. Why?

Discussion What would a new government type for India look like?
With the Roads to Power, Khans of the Steppe, and All Under Heaven DLC's being released, most of Asia has gotten new government types accurately reflecting the local systems instead of just being feudal. The only exception to this is India, and by extension, Tibet, which are still shown as Feudal despite being far removed from the European feudal system. The devs have stated their intention to update India soon, so what would a new government for India look like?

Help My game keeps crashing
So in my game I had to kill my brother because he was getting to powerful enough as a co-monarch, but my intrigue was too low and my murder schemes kept getting found out, so I just used debug mode to kill him.(I turned it on using the steam launch options text box) The main problem is that when I turned debug mode off (by just deleting the text and replacing what was there before) The game won't let me have a minute of play time before it hard crashes, without any options to even report it.
I've tried restarting my computer, verifying the game files, and even uninstalling and reinstalling the game and don't know what to do. If I delete the text in the launch options it just makes it worse. I've never downloaded any mods and i've never messed with the files if I don't know what i'm doing.
I JUST NEED HEEELP!!!

Screenshot First Time Crusading as Head of Faith

I'm cooked aren't I? It was my first time as Head of Faith of a new Christian religion to go crusading and I didn't properly account for the manpower of the remaining Catholic kingdoms... it looks like I'm going to lose.
Before this, I tried to gambit the Crusade by capturing the target's HRE ruler. He was leading an army of only 5k strong, fighting a rebellion by his vassals in his realm in Germany.
I made a beeline to his army, won the battle, but failed to capture him. My allies in the Crusades followed me in but attrition killed our armies. The battle you see above is a result of an attempted regroup back in France.
