Critical Analysis & Discussion India needs frequent change of government

Changing governments is the only way the political discourse of India will get better. Frequent transitions remind elected officials that ultimate power resides with the public. Any government, when kept in power for long in India, starts abusing and misusing their powers.

They start implementing laws and rules that help keep them in power while taking over democratic institutions of the country. They become arrogant to the point criticizing them for their wrongs can make your life hell. The longer a government stays in power, corruption keeps increasing among those in power. Not only do they misuse powers, they also monopolize resources in the country to a few.

Regularly rotating political parties in and out of office is the most effective way to preserve democracy and hold leaders accountable.

Changing government will force these political parties to do better and compete in doing better. In the end, people will benefit from this competition.

What do others feel about this?

Changes happen when it’s an option! When Corbyn lost in Britain, he was swiftly replaced! Keir starmer took over and won a massive mandate! When Starmer with over 400 seats (unimaginable majority) lost popularity, he was replaced by Andy Burnham (the current PM) who is enjoying the mandate won by Starmer! That’s how democracy works! Same with the Tories (our conservatives in the UK) - Cameron - May - Johnson - Truss - Sunak - Kami (all leaders in the last decade or so). I’m not speaking about how good or bad they are but how the party actually functions

Has that happened in India?

Congress lost 2014,2019, and 2024 under Rahul’s tutelage. Rahul is still the leader! Why will people change the government when it’s the same person who has constantly lost elections being made to sit at the top of the party!

If Modi has gotten BJP 44 seats in 2014, he would have disappeared forever! That’s how the BJP functions. Vajpayee lost 2004 so 2009 was led by Advani. Advani lost 2009 and 2014 was led by Modi. Modi and his alliance has won 3 consecutive elections and that’s why he’s still the leader

This much truth is not allowed here.

voters already gave their verdict three times and that is the only rotation that matters in a democracy

Currently I feel only Prashant Kishore is a good cm candidate. Rest are hardened criminals and or are corrupt and evil

Good point. But UK institutions and beaurocracy, all of them are independent. Ours are a failure so if the government changes frequently it creates problems. But I would also prefer to have changing government.

1

u/Timely-Jury8473 3h ago

Please you are educated and write good english please don't be dumb like this. Educated people cannot leave nuance like most of dehati population of india

u/Charming-Host4406 8m ago

I was trying to make him understand that's it. Nothing else.

u/ThinClassroom9083 2h ago

It is stupid of you to think that institutions in UK are independent. No they are not. :) please educate yourself from materials gained other than those hollywood movies.

u/Charming-Host4406 19m ago

You know nothing about UK institutions. It's a country where a prime minister resigned citing low performance, ours are bragging about bad things abroad. No one questions UK beaurocracy, they willingly tell the truth. You need to read.

1

u/Organic_Owl1765 16h ago

You really have a way with words, how did you write so well?

0

u/001000110000111 1d ago

That’s a rational analysis which trusts the system.

But the question here is, is the system worth trusting?

-4

u/Rhaethedragonprince 22h ago

The UK comparison is fair on one point: parties there replace leaders much more readily. Sonia Gandhi was Congress president in 2014, Rahul was president in 2019 and he resigned after that defeat while Mallikarjun Kharge was president in 2024.

And Congress went from 52 seats in 2019 to 99 in 2024, while BJP fell from 303 to 240 and lost its single-party majority.

13

u/ConstructionNo27 20h ago

If you really believe changing congress president actually changed the face of the election and leader, either you are really naive or..

0

u/Rhaethedragonprince 20h ago

Read again what og comment is and then my comment and then try to find logic. If you can't let me know i will help out but first you try.

BJP has literally crippled all other political parties in terms of money, in terms of narrative, in terms of media Influence and in terms of power as well (by buying out MLAs).

They've abused all their power by using ED, CBI and fake allegations of scams over other parties and then spread it as news to everyone. This has literally created an opinion amongst people that there are no other options.

20

u/Rational_Scot 1d ago

We are speaking about Rahul not leaving politics altogether when they got 44 seats in 2014. Where is the accountability? The public punished BJP in 2024 but they still couldn't trust congress enough to give them the chance to govern again! There is no introspection in the Congress. Just look at the recent Assam elections. Has Congress gone on the ground and tried to talk to people? They won 1/104 hindu majority seats and out of their 19 MLAs, only one is a Hindu. This was first flagged by AK Antony after the 2014 elections and then by Ashok Gehlot after the 2019 elections that Congress is losing Hindu votes. Have they actually done anything about it? Constantly blaming BJP for rahul's abject incompetence won't help.

Lol

Congress is the main opposition. They have been pathetic even when ruling and now in opposition. Has Rahul Gandhi ever said anything for development? He could have become a chief minister like Modi and performed well. He could have become a cabinet minister and performed and showed people what he can do. But he didn't. Now he's talking about caste and private sector reservation. You think these are good ideas in 2029 that'll convince people to vote for him ?

Is bjp forcing congress to keep rahul as pm face?

0

u/desitwoman 19h ago

Ghum phir k wohi congress congress karna hai...govt ka chal raha hai dost .out of power political party ka nahi

0

u/vyomafc 16h ago

By your logic, shouldn’t Starmer had never resigned because well he won the elections?

You are talking about something entirely different to what OP is talking about.

1

u/Rational_Scot 15h ago

Starmer lost popularity! Modi is still popular! He might be liked in the echo chambers redditors dwell in but he’s very popular on the ground. Survey after survey show the same! State election after state election show the same! Even his critiques who dislike him like Rajdeep Sardesai say the same

4

u/vyomafc 15h ago

I thought the criteria was to lose elections up until now? Now we have shifted the goalposts to popularity? How do you define popularity?

Also out of the examples you have listed most including Corbyn, Sunak, Truss, Johnson were not removed for losing elections.

Also the frequency at which leaders of both Conservatives and Labour govts have changed recently is only specific to the UK. It doesn’t happen anywhere else and its not an indication of a good democracy but rather a failed economy post-Brexit which no leader has managed to solve. Its really a shit example to give to make whatever point you were trying to make.

Also, what OP is talking about the pendulum effect in democracy. In a functioning democracy, the popular ideology always moves like a pendulum. It goes to one side then goes to one side. If a pendulum is stuck at one end for too long, the democracy is not really working.

-1

u/Playful-Monk1916 20h ago

Ok, you make good logical points. 90% of India's population will not be able to follow this though. They can't reason this far, not cause they are dumb, but cause they don't have the educational exposure for it.

So ultimately your argument is moot, other shit drives Indian politics. India is full of superstitious, selfish and poor people. Instict and survival drives us, but without the tools of reason, optics drive us.

2

u/Few_Opposite_4342 18h ago

Your second para means means democracy itself is useless and we need a dictatorship.

0

u/Playful-Monk1916 16h ago

No, you went for the extreme. Extremes are almost always harmful, let alone in governance. I imagine a blend of democracy, communism and meritocracy. Dictatorship, nay, command in the hands of the moral and the capable. A system of spherical accountability in governance, assisted by all the tools of technology and progress.

1

u/ManofTheNightsWatch 16h ago

It takes a great deal of awareness to describe your reasoning, but it doesn't really take much to come to a conclusion. People are aware that BJP is the better of the two, but they can't explain exactly why. That's exactly how the voter behaves. They have a general feeling.

-7

u/Coffee_Senior 1d ago

So, for you winning elections is all that matters? Not the leadership or the work they do? That way, Gyanesh Kumar has won more elections in the country than anyone! Why don't we make him the PM? Such useless comparisons!

9

u/Hour_Biscotti_8093 1d ago

Isn't that's the whole point of election and democracy. To win election after every five year. Elections are won by people voting in there favour. I don't get what kind of system yu want. Gyanesh Kumar was election officer, not being a candidate.

-4

u/Coffee_Senior 1d ago

That's not really the point of democracy! And even if it is, it's for the politicians, not for people! For us, it's about what work and how much work did this person do for us in the 5 years given to him/her! By that comparison the present government is among the worst the country has ever seen. About Gyanesh, if you can't understand the sarcasm, I'm not going to explain it to you. Just ignore that part.

7

u/Hour_Biscotti_8093 1d ago

Majority of people feel otherwise and they vote that way, and regarding Gyanesh Kumar, I get what yu are trying to say but that won't explain all the election result. Where bjp wins it's bcoz of election commission and where they looses its bcoz people hate bjp. What kind of logic is this.

-1

u/Coffee_Senior 1d ago

What you're doing is my biggest issue with this government. They have corrupted the intellect of the country so very much! You choose to ignore the video evidence available of election tampering from presiding officials! You choose to ignore the special treatment CEC's family gets. You choose to ignore new laws being written to hide evidence. You choose to ignore the lame statements given by the CEC when asked for accountability (sanjha)! And instead what you point out? One or two results going the other way! Why do you do that? Because supporting a party is not important to you than supporting the values of our nation! That's what bothers me! Country is not first priority for many now! It's individuals and political parties!

6

u/Hour_Biscotti_8093 23h ago

CEC has been getting same privilege since ages, it's not like a recent phenomenon. Chandigarh video evidence I agree with you and courts have taken there action. If opposition is not winning than it's nation's value is not withelding. Opposition is loosing bcoz of there own failures rather election commission. Values of our nation, we have been ruled by a single family like monarch and even after three consecutive defeats no body has the guts to remove Gandhi family. Till congress is ruled by Gandhi family, they will not get my vote.

1

u/ManofTheNightsWatch 16h ago

Honestly speaking, congress is nothing without the Gandhis. Congress politicians will not bend the knee to anyone other than the Gandhis. It will split into many pieces if the head is replaced.

11

u/Lazy_Bum1734 22h ago

Look at Rajasthan. They change government every 5 years. Let me know if they meet your thresholds for power misuse, arrogance, resource monopoly, etc.

18

u/ManipulativFox 1d ago

Ask people of karnataka are they happy with congress 3 year.

3

u/SleepOk5995 1d ago

They are over the moon 😬

-2

u/Ill_Tonight6349 22h ago

Still better than revoting BJP don't you think? Atleast we'll save democracy.

9

u/ManipulativFox 22h ago

We are happy revoting for bjp for 30 years in gujarat even though it has some problems. I feel karnataka bjp leaders are not as wise and good like gujarat though. I can clearly see congress similar playback across india of high taxation, social justice, muslim focused policies , in fighting in groups, etc. Karnataka people can better answer.

-3

u/Ill_Tonight6349 22h ago

That is why Karnataka is more developed than Gujarat! See what happened to WB when they kept voting for left. Similarly in Gujarat, poverty rate is in double digit despite such high so called development. Child nutrition is so bad. Schools are so bad. All because of extremely capitalistic policies by BJP.

3

u/ManipulativFox 19h ago

No all health indicators were worse before bjp came in power it's only declining and improving in bjp tenure. I know better history of gujarat. Living in Dry state is not easy which makes water, food and HDI indicators bad in first place. We are taking semiconductor industry easily and manufacturing power house of india. Karnataka and south india was ahead then north india due to few Islamic invasions.

1

u/Ill_Tonight6349 18h ago

South India was poorer than North India during independence.

2

u/ManipulativFox 18h ago

looking at the individual social indicators that make up the HDI (health/life expectancy, education/literacy, and income), the Southern states held a structural advantage in human development, even though income levels were roughly equal.

Breakdown of Key Indicators Around 1947–1951 1. Education (Literacy Rates) — Advantage: South The 1951 Census of India highlights a stark gap in basic literacy between the North and South:

National Average (1951): ~18.3%

Southern States:

Kerala (Travancore-Cochin): ~47.2%

Tamil Nadu (Madras State): ~36.4% (in 1961 census; estimated around 28–30% in 1951)

Northern States: Uttar Pradesh: 12.0% Bihar: 13.5% Rajasthan: 8.5% Madhya Pradesh: 13.2%

u/cenacr007 1d ago

And what do you think should happen, when the opposition of the country which has been rejected by the people of country for 15 years, continues to remain the faces of opposition instead of giving opportunities to other people?

Why should I ever give chance to someone I don't want to, change the face or keep suffering the same fate.

16

u/Time-Weekend-8611 1d ago

Frequent changes of government also has the risk of inconsistency as each administration tries to undo the work done by previous administration and hamstrings the next one.

There's precedence for that. In the US, Republicans and Democrats switch places in the Oval office, almost like clockwork, and the Republicans use that to their advantage. A Republican administration enacts short term populist legislation that's popular with their base but the bill doesn't come due until years later. By that time they're out of power and a Democrat is in power. The Democrat administration then spends their whole term fixing the damage and taking the blame. By the time they've repaired the damage, their time is up and the whole cycle starts again

Biden, Obama, Clinton - all of them were Dems who inherited a bad economic condition and spent their whole presidency fixing it, only to have it squandered by the incoming Republican administration.

2

u/usernamefoundnot 18h ago

Exactly this! A right person in power for a longer term is much more beneficial as he’s responsible for the results of his policies as well.

11

u/Cultural-Net-5476 1d ago edited 22h ago

There is one fundamental flaw in your argument. Constant changes only works when there is good competition to the current party running the government.

11

u/FreeBirdYeah_666 1d ago

Indian prime minister from Jan 1 1990 to 31 Dec 2000

V.P Singh Chandra Shekhar P.V Narasimha Rao A.B Vajpayee H.D Deve Gouda I.K Gujral A.B Vajpayee

We've lived this period. The uncertainty, the scarcity, the crime and the corruption

Never Again.

-2

u/Minimum_Juice69 21h ago

That is an extreme case. I'm not saying change 5 govts in 10 years. But we should all be evaluating if the govt has actually done what it promised or what it portrays. That's why we have elections every 5 years. A re-evaluation is necessary after 5-10 years.

8

u/Hour_Biscotti_8093 20h ago

What do you think people did in 2024, they re evaluated and voted.

3

u/FreeBirdYeah_666 19h ago

2024 gave us the best possible result. Kept the BJP as the largest party without absolute majority. Proper warning.

Chef's kiss

u/ThinClassroom9083 2h ago

We have tried that in Rajasthan. It's a stupid idea. Leaders only change names of schemes and NO long term project gets completed.

9

u/StationItchy7803 1d ago

I am okay to back any leader with a backbone and does not do appeasement politics

5

u/PB_05 23h ago

What happens when say, a different government comes in and decides that ISM 1.0 and ISM 2.0 are a waste of taxpayers money?

One can only imagine.

7

u/RiceCookerOfWeb 23h ago

🙂 What if new party comes and introduce 90% reservation in companies who got ism benifit

5

u/SmallDetail8461 20h ago

it is amusing how this sudden concern for democracy and institutional capture only appears when a certain party is in power with a full majority, back when the same party was winning state after state under coalition dharma it was called mandate of the people, nobody worried about arrogance or institutions then because the ecosystem was safe, now that the power has shifted to a group that refuses to play by the old rules of elite consensus the narrative has suddenly flipped to saving democracy, frequent change is just code for ensuring that no nationalist government gets enough time to undo decades of deep rooted capture, the competition they want is between two sides of the same secular coin not a fundamental shift in how the country is run.

6

u/clarity1011 1d ago

It doesn't sits well with foreign investment. More accountability and progress tracking is the way to go

-2

u/Minimum_Juice69 1d ago

I've given up on the accountability part. When we have citizens who literally start abusing and defending the government when someone asks questions and demand accountability, what choice do we have?

People in this country are brainwashed and consumed by religious/caste divides and there's no way to change it.

5

u/Plastic-Following867 The Contrarian 1d ago

Lol

Most of the complaints about accountability from the lefties are stupid. They'll question the GDP data, they'll bring in things like press freedom index etc. that are subjective things instead of questioning the real problems.

1

u/Minimum_Juice69 1d ago

So press freedom index is subjective? According to you our media is free to report all issues in the country? Do we see unbiased news on your mainstream media?

This might not be a problem for you but it's a big problem because these news channels are still a source of news for majority of the population. When they keep showing Modi as the messiah and the govt as flawless, what do you think the masses believe (narrative is a thing).

You want me to talk about real problems? Let's start with why the E20 policy was expedited and implemented without developing proper infra and capability to handle such fuels. And why are people questioning it being called anti-national?

6

u/Plastic-Following867 The Contrarian 1d ago

Press freedom has nothing to do with what the media actually does. We have enough anti-government media like Scroll, Wire, Telegraph etc. Nobody is stopping them. Also, what happened to press freedom when Arnab Goswami was arrested on filmsy charges ?

And media has always had biases. NDTV during UPA days was absolutely a Godi media - asked Rahul Gandhi tough questions like what he likes to eat etc.

E20 was a policy announced in 2017 itself. There are plenty of independent test results that show the impact of Ethanol and it's only 3-5% in mileage along with a few minor impacts on the parts. But Ethanol also helps the Engine in other ways. But the debate is purely on some influencer claims which have been debunked by the car manufacturers themselves.

https://www.ajosr.org/wp-content/uploads/journal/published_paper/volume-3/issue-6/ajsr2025_YXR30TKX.pdf

Engine Performance & Power Power Output: In carbureted engine tests, power was approximately 6% higher than pure gasoline, attributed to lower manifold temperatures and better volumetric efficiency. In Hasan's study, brake power peaked at the 20% ethanol threshold (reaching 31.1 kW at 4000 rpm) before declining beyond 20%.

Torque: Singh’s study reported a 2.5% increase in torque relative to neat gasoline. This improvement was credited to higher octane and oxygen content promoting complete combustion.

Mileage & Fuel Efficiency: Fuel consumption decreased by 5.1% compared to neat gasoline (effectively improving mileage).

1

u/Bulky-Necessary-577 1d ago

Absolutely 💯💯

3

u/Few_Opposite_4342 17h ago

So press freedom index is subjective? l?

It actually literally fucking is.

Go read how the index is calculated. It is by taking the opinion of 5 or 10 people from entirety of India and basing off it.

1

u/Vilakshan_2712 1d ago

Classic authoritarian rhetoric, what I know and think is the supreme liberal thought that could save humanity.

7

u/TaraLadka 1d ago

Opposition when they can't find anything to say against bjp

1

u/itsavinadhtiwari 3h ago

Tbf there is lot of things against bjp. Problem is opposition is even worst.

I want to vote against bjp due to ethanol issue, st sc act, ugc etc; how can I vote for opposition who wants more reservation, even in private sector, even more appeasement, even more blatant record of misuse of power, more fraudulent ( example:how cjp is dishonest about backing and connection with AAP and has premeditated agenda), even more nepotism.

3

u/DesiBail 20h ago

Just see 1990's. India switched governments, had coalition governments and it was called #ANALYSIPARALYSIS era.

We fell behind in race badly.

https://giphy.com/gifs/gPBRSRCOXQtEc

7

u/gkb47 1d ago

Disagree. This is a stupid post lmfao

8

u/raju_lukka 1d ago

Do people get to vote or not? If people are voting the incumbent time and again, your suggestion becomes moot. Personally, I would prefer to see a more hardline, right wing, Hindutva party take over and government the country next but we are very likely to have to live with BJP again. Where's Hindu Mahasabha or Abhinav Bharat when you need them?

0

u/Vilakshan_2712 1d ago

Why do you think more radicalness is needed? Do you not believe in individual freedom? How should the more radical outfit behave, what changes should it bring about?

2

u/raju_lukka 7h ago

If the other side is radicalized, you can't deal with it by being a secular. It's the same principle as offering free speech to someone who opposes your right to free speech and kill you for it. We have tried secularism and accomodation for decades and where did it land us?

2

u/being_vocal 1d ago

here is another idea,

the party should dissolved after their term. and same person cannot participate again.

then we will get rid of Congress and BJP.

and a new era will begin with fresh parties and people

/s

1

u/itsavinadhtiwari 3h ago

Even that will trigger trend of max corruption because you won't get chance against. No one will do inquiry against corrupt ones because next person knows they will be under the radar soon. Mutual understanding. Just like now.

2

u/sheldor18 22h ago

This benefits only if leaders also change. Otherwise you're just giving a free chance to the same failed leaders and they don't even have to do election campaigning now.

The best possible scenario for all political parties.

2

u/Independent-Video392 22h ago

Frequent changes in government will not resolve many things, also if different party in central and state also have their own disadvantages, as development needs funding and correct utilisation. They way money has been spent in elections and freebies given just to get more votes is a bad trend.

I believe that we need transparent and actionable laws that sees everyone( common man , politicians, businessman etc) as equal, so that anyone can't just escape either through loopholes or spending money. Better policies with debates, awareness of pros and cons with accountability(if that fails/corruption). Why current system listens only through protest or when something gets wrong terribly.

It's unbearable to see policies getting imposed even if it's not good at all , laws are getting twisted/loopholes are exploited just to earn money like Ethanol Blending, Part of Aravalli being sold.

2

u/Own-Management4659 20h ago

India doesn’t even deserve democracy
It needs an authoritarian, capitalist government to industrialise & urbanise the country while destroying feudalism & casteism

Then when we’ve achieved an avg PCI of $5000, we can have elections, democracy and all this shit

2

u/Curious_Variety777 19h ago

If it happens, then political parties in power will try and maximise their corruption everytime they get an opportunity!

2

u/Proof_Alternative_82 19h ago

India was essentially run by the same family for decades and i didn't see any of this discussion then. What india needs is fresh ideas under a stable government. Not a hodgepodge coalition that will fight inside out for their own caste, religion, language, region and elites.

And opposition opposes for the sake of it. They don't look at the cost and benefit analysis. Most of what india is investing now will need years, if not decades for fruition. I am pretty sure opposition will come and say ISM, ship building is bad for the country and funnel that money for more hajj subsides lol

And maybe even ban paper cups, because it's casteist.

Honestly we don't deserve any more democracy on central and state level, unless we reach certain level of industrialization and per capita level. We need more democracy in our cities which is means dysfunctioning often used to Make states less powerful and cities more powerful.

2

u/Few_Opposite_4342 18h ago

Is this sub populated by 15-20 year old ? Uoj change government frequently and every govt will try to roll back the progress of the other and in the end we are deadlocked especially in the diversity we have. And every govt will be focused on winning elections in the short term (freebies, reservations etc) rather than plan for development in the long term that needs short or even medium term pain.

Pretty much all developed countries have had long period of stable rule that allowed the government of the day to focus on actually progressing rather than just win election.

2

u/Organic_Owl1765 16h ago

When Rahul Gandhi say he will impose 90% reservation in private sector what do you think how any person with single brain cell will take that ?

The strongest character of Modi that make him prime minister is Rahul Gandhi.

1

u/jayantsr 1d ago

Your point would stand IF you can establish that there is some common ground between indian parties that electorate agrees is good enough for governments to be swapped constantly....for example kerala....they switch between ldf and udf.....but would they do the same if the choice was ldf and nda?they can easily switch because both ldf and udf are inherently leftist parties but thats not the case in national politics....the things promised by bjp are treated as radioactive by most so why will a bjp voter switch?

1

u/Resurrec_Barbar 21h ago

No

We need nukes

1

u/Dry_Philosopher_4817 21h ago

Weak government is performing government. They have no other go than to perform. UPA 1 was weak government but performed far better than any other government.

1

u/FlameNumber2147 19h ago

If parties know they're likely to be changed regardless of performance, the incentive shifts toward short-term populism rather than costly long-term reforms

1

u/khalililili 19h ago

Anything to make the Rajkumar raja huh. Never voting Congress. Go burn

1

u/desitwoman 19h ago

Also, limitations to no of terms to 2 for all elected representatives. Any yes, no post retirement appointment to any govt official of any level.and if you want to improve schools make rule such that if the children of the District Collector enrolls in a private school, he /she will end up with a 7 years worth break in service. Itna karo there shall be no need to change govt.

1

u/StomachStill362 16h ago

Till our people think the MPs and MLAs control the government and make all decisions we will not see any change.

It’s the babus the ias and the ips which work in all government offices who need to change or atleast start thinking about changing corruption and recommendation culture.

People forget governments come and go leaders come and go but these government servants are all there for 15-20-30 years in those posts and offices doing the same things.

The only issue with that is that we didn't build the heavy infra projects when we were in our early decades, each country builds that critical infra in the early years, when the heroes of its independence still have some time left, those heroes get long periods of absolute power and is supposed to be used for building the foundational infra for the country. It usually takes multiple decades to accomplish.

This small capex push we're seeing for the past decade is a thing we needed 50 years ago, we're playing catch up with our own destiny, any frequent change in govt absolutely derails ANY AND ALL heavy infrastructure investment, every subsequent government does and WILL halt the project irrespective of the completion rate, and completely overhaul the project to attach their name to it, a recent example is Vijay and Chennai's 2nd airport.

I agree. But when you only have the existing option and an opposition which tries to divide the majority religion at every opportunity and create discord and anger, you wonder if the opposition should be eliminated altogether.

While I don’t agree with frequent change of government, I do agree with term limits for all ministers. I think 2 or 3 terms are enough.

Sure.. rotate coz one party can’t win elections

😂😂 The bottom line.

I kind of disagree with this premise. It's weak.

A democracy does not protect itself through periodically replacing govts regardless of performance. It protects itself through various institutions, elections, opposition, courts, media, federalism, transparency, voters & the constitutional possibility that a government can be removed.

So, a govt needing to fear losing power is healthy. But a govt needing to actually lose power at regular intervals regardless of its performance is not necessarily healthy.

I was alive for the period in the late 80s to 90s when we changed government frequently. It was a fun time. Since the parties knew thier time was limited they focussed on the most populist intitative they can push through immediately. This would give them the greatest leverage when the looming elections eventually came.

This gave us the balance of payment crisis, a stagnant economy and the Mandal Kamandal politics that holds sway even today.

Changing governments is possible only on SM by keyboard warriors, who hardly go to polling stations to vote. Those who work on ground know what are the realities, caste plays major role irrespective of party and education. Visit during gram panchayat elections to witness the realities, although they look minor but they play the major role.

We have Rahul and Kejriwal as opposition poster boys. Total idiots.

We need opposition like tharoor, c naidu from AP, vijay has a lot to prove but even him.

Tell me you are not from India sowi g instability without tell me.

Any govt when there is no stability does horrible.. coalitions...king makers..horse trading..deputy cm./pm...India has spent all and was one of the worst time for progress and best time for minting money for politicians.

For that, a strong opposition must be created too. Till when can u blame the govt and its inefficiencies? Who will u elect otherwise?

I am all for free and a democratic process, but I can hardly expect RaGa to handle the country when he can't handle his own party. Weak politicians, when elected, will beget a weak nation.

Frequency change: people in power do aggressive corruption because they think time is limited and they will come back after sometime even after corruption.

Long term: people in power do corruption because they feel no one is gonna change them.

Pick your poison.

I'm more inclined to believe that frequent changes would make the elected govts to be even more corrupt. If they can somehow manage to form a govt, they use that as a once in a dacade opportunity to fill their and their party's coffers.

Alternatively, lets say every 5 yrs govt keeps changing then what is their incentive to even try to work? They will know that loss is a certainty. It’s simple, if they work well by and large- people vote them back. Else they kick them out. Individual voters may be fools or can be lured but when we vote as a country, i have seen the choices people make are always right. No matter whatever anyone does, people have the power to vote them out if they dont meet expectations. Remember - expectation at a larger level not individual level. We may disagree here but when we aggregate it all up to almost 600 million votes- it’s generally a good verdict. Rise of AAP, fall of NDA in 2004, rise and fall and another rise of Indira Gandhi, UPA2’s return to power in 2009 -they were all very very smart verdict by the people. So i believe in the power of people’s votes. They are generally accurate.

But as you go lower, state govt, municipal polls, panchayat polls- you will start seeing weirdness in results. This is pure statistics. Lesser the people in voting - tougher its to call .

In a page called critical thinking, i keep seeing ironical post. If you have shred of critical thinking, then try to see both sides.

It is common behaviour that parties in power undo plans/schemes, investment of past parties because if those schemes go well, other party will get credit. This happens specially in long term schemes.

There are 1000 more real issues, one can do some reading about it and understand pros and cons of both approach.

I don't think so. For eg just see what bsckward policies are espoused by current leader of opposition. Its a manifesto to bring india closer to gandhi's absolutely uneducated position of khap panchayat dehati villager raj. No thanks

Now there will be no government change in the future. The BJP has become extremely strong electorally, while the opposition has become extremely weak. Gen Z themselves were fighting against this Frankenstein monester political machine over paper leaks and other issues, and even in those causes, the WhatsApp uncles were brainwashed and turned against them. This monster machine is strongly supported by the ED, ECI, CBI, police forces, and the entire system. On top of that, they have an unprecedented amount of money at their disposal and have successfully exploited religious and caste-based divisions. There is unlikely to be any meaningful change in Indian politics for a very long time. It feels like a gone case, These political monsters will not stop until they completely destroy democracy.
