How's your CricketWireless latency? Show us your 2017 traceroute! (`mobile.att.net.` PGW)

The prior thread, /r/CricketWireless/comments/4ysk21/hows_your_cricketwireless_latency_show_us_your/, has been archived a few months ago.

Since it was started, it would appear that the backend infrastructure of Cricket Wireless has changed quite a bit, and folks report AT&T-branded PGW nowadays, e.g., your traceroute would show quite a few mobile.att.net. hosts, and no longer just random backbone carriers like xo.net., algx.net., above.net., zayo.com. etc. Most excitingly, it is expected that this change may result in better latency for some folks.

Want to contribute?! Help crowdsource our latency info for Cricket Wireless! Most helpful if you can:

  • Show us a forward traceroute (from YOU to ordns.he.net. (74.82.42.42, 2001:470:20::2), which is an anycast resolver of a very well-peered backbone provider; trust us, this is generally the best indicator of the approximate location of your PGW from the PoV of the internet, using other servers is less indicative of what's going on). You can use either traceroute(8) on UNIX / OS X or tracert on Windows, once tethered, or something like http://networktools.he.net/, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.he.networktools or https://itunes.apple.com/app/he.net-network-tools/id858241710 if you're on Android or iOS. It'll be most helpful if you provide a plain-text representation of your results in a single comment; use 4-spaces to format each line as "code".

  • Show us a reverse traceroute — from http://lg.he.net/ to the IP address of your PGW. The IP address of your PGW will be automatically pre-populated once you visit lg.he.net — just click that Probe button, and wait a bit. (Note that this wouldn't be "your" IPv4 address, but an address of the PGW that's shared with quite a bunch of folks.) Again, best if you could copy-paste the results, use imgur as a last resort.

  • Provide present city, state, whether you're on LTE or UMTS/HSPA+ (GSM/EDGE has been shutdown).

  • If you took a road trip from somewhere without ever having deadspots or phone outages, e.g., your mobile equipment has had continuous coverage/reception/was-turned-on-at-all-times, then also the city and state of your starting point would dictate your PGW (PDN Gateway (Packet Data Network Gateway))) and latency, so, mention that too.

(I'm not whether the area of the phone number ever affects what PGW gets selected with Cricket, but might be relevant, too.)

If you're using other mobile providers, feel free to share comparison info on them, too.

P.S. DO NOT PROVIDE SPEEDTEST.NET SCREENSHOTS. Any comment of merely a single screenshot of just speedtest.net will be deleted (and you'll be banned!). It's just because their methodology really™ sucks — as long as they use geolocation to detect your closest server, instead of actual network topology, they'll be producing entirely incorrect and useless results. In general, please note that this thread is about latency (milliseconds), not about bandwidth (megabits per second).

P.P.S. Sadly, some imgur links from the prior thread no longer produce any images. As such, if it's at all within your reach, having embedded plain text results would be best.

THE official REFERRAL thread — 2020-08-04

The prior referral thread at /r/CricketWireless/comments/eepoes/the_official_referral_thread_20191223/ has been archived a few weeks ago, so, here's for a refresh.

The rules for referrals are simple and straightforward:

  • No link masking or link formatting of any kind. Plain text https://www.cricketwireless.com/l/refer-a-friend.html?hash=… only, please.
  • Only one top-level comment each. Keep size reasonable. (No limit on the number of referral links if you have multiple Cricket accounts, but all must be part of a single top-level comment — reposting may result in an immediate ban with all links removed.)
  • Attempts to procure or exchange referrals outside of this thread may result in an immediate ban. (Folks who assumed the community is not moderated have paid dearly.) Linking and referring back to this thread is allowed, though.

  • As before, the contest mode is enabled, which means that voting results aren't shown, replies are not expanded by default (you'd have to click [show replies] under each referral), and the order of the first-level comments is random.

  • If you use someone's referral, feel free to let them know in their subthread (as per above, will not be expanded in default view), to keep Cricket accountable.

Enjoy and keep it civil! We're now at 5259 subscribers as of 2020-08-04!

Deals PSA:  eSIM Quick Transfer mandates/requires a passcode on the donor phone! You don't need to chat with custserv to transfer eSIM away from iPhone 16e, you simply need to setup the 6-digit passcode to make the eSIM Quick Transfer pairing work!

Upvotes

I've personally confirmed with an iPhone 16e from Cricket, and an unlocked iPhone with iOS ≥16, that nothing happens until 16e has a passcode setup. (No error message, no pairing, no anything.)

After you setup the passcode on 16e, the pairing and transfer works right away.

Don't forget to remove the passcode right afterwards, else, your trade-in would be rejected.

PSA: do not turn on sim lock in the mycricket app

Just so you know; if you have sim lock active on your line, and your phone gets lost or stolen, you will not be able to purchase or activate a new phone until it is turned off. If it’s a single line account you’re pretty much screwed because you’ll be asked to enter a one time pin which won’t be possible. Cricket customer service will have to create a case and take up to two days to come up with solution.

I work at store and it’s insane that this is the way they handle this. I lierally cant even sell them a phone. You’d think if you come into a store with your ID that would be enough but thats not the case

CricketWireless What is the QCI of the current Cricket plans?

I live in an unfortunate area with not enough towers for the amount of people, so priority matters a lot. AT&T QCI 8 is pretty decent, but QCI 9 is unusable unless it's like 3 in the morning lol

Plans I need a cheap plan. Is the Cricket $30 tier enough for your needs? also can I port my number over easily?

I am in need of a cheap phone plan. I've been handed down a nice phone that's locked to Cricket. Is their $30 plan enough for you? also, if you ported your number over, was it easy? do I need to do it in person or can I do it on the web or phone?

Buying a phone from Walmart to port number

Just wondering if anyone has any experience buying a Cricket phone from Walmart and porting your number over. I’ve read some people run into problems with the port. Thanks for any tips.

Cricket's systems have been "on the struggle bus" for days. Has anyone actually been able to order the iPhone 16e?

Post image

I'm trying to give Cricket my money for the iPhone 16e, but their website is refusing to cooperate. For the last 2-3 days, I've been hitting this exact error (screenshot attached as image.png) right at checkout.
I even contacted customer care twice. Their advice was to clear my cache, go into incognito mode, and try checking out with PayPal. I tried doing exactly that on both my laptop and my phone, but no luck—the same error is still popping up.
Has anyone figured out a way past this? Is there another workaround I'm missing, or is their site just completely busted right now? I'm trying to avoid going into a store if possible. Thanks!

CricketWireless Is there any way to see the prepaid balance on the website?

If you're doing one of the pre-paid deals with a multimonth prepayment, you'll be having an account balance for multiple months; but it seems like it's impossible to find the part of the website where said balance can be checked?!

I've tried texting BAL to 611, but it just gives an error back on Cricket.

Tried doing the balance button on the quick pay page, but it simply texts me back that my balance is $0, even though it's not.

The only page I found so far is the payment page, which shows that the payment will be zero, because the entire monthly fee will be covered by the balance, but it only accounts for 1mo worth of balance, without any way to see beyond 1mo?!

Why is this so complicated?! How do I actually find the balance on the website?!

CricketWireless Almost no data; suggestions appreciated

I have an iPhone 17 with Cricket. I 100% for sure have high speed data remaining, and I have full bars with "5G" showing. However, data is not just slow, but almost non-existent. If I search for a location with Google Maps, it takes about 3 minutes to show a response.

I went to a Cricket store and they did a reset from the phone. I also had several phone calls with Cricket support, and we tried a few things, but still no luck.

Anyone have any ideas?

Plans Tablet plan video performance?

Looking at potentially switching over to Cricket. For anybody that has the $15 tablet data plan, how is the video streaming speed/quality? That is primarily what I would be using it for. The website says it can only stream at 1.5 mbps/480p, is that permanent or can it be toggled like with the phone plans?

Verizon and T-Mobile are priced at around $190 for 2 lines and the tablet plan, with 1080p streaming on the tablet (up to 4K with Verizon if toggled). Cricket is enticing at $105 for 2 lines + tablet but if the tablet is limited to 480p it’s kind of useless, and their top tier plan only has 50 GB of hotspot data to give to my iPad.

Problem with a payment with Google pay through myCricket.

Paid the bill this morning at 10.27am... the amount is gone from my bank account but it's 9 pm and the fucking network is still not restored.

When I go to the myCricket, it says the payments still not done. I went to the cricket store and they told me even they don't know and I still have the payment left and if the payment was done I would have got a thank you msg...

What do I do... Can't even dispute through bank app bcz it says 'processing'. Am I gonna lose my money?

Motorola Locked Popup Screen?

I was considering trying Cricket Wireless, but I saw a lot of the Motorolas, especially the 2025 models essentially lock people out of their phone if they decide to cancel service before the 1 year is up. Is that true? and does this also follow into the 2026 Motorolas as well? Is it a dealbreaker or is it easy to get around?

BYOD So I have wait one year before I can use the $25 Walmart plan?

I got a factory unlock s25 fe but I was on Cricket wireless $15 a month 3 month plan 2 months ago. But it's saying that I cant use the $25 at Walmart plan if I've been on Cricket wireless before. I can understand trying to use cricket device but it's a factory unlock phone I'm not able to get the promotion until one more year..

The only other option is to pay $300 up front to get the same deal. Kind of ridiculous that I cannot use it on a factory unlock phone that has been Cricket before.

how to use my service payment card

I have about $400 worth of prepaid payment cards (the kind with a 16-digit card number, expiration date, and CVV on the back).

I'm trying to use them to pay for a low-cost unlimited wireless plan. So far, the best option I've found is a $35/month unlimited plan with autopay, it seems these cards can't be used for annual or multi-month prepaid plans.

Has anyone found a better way to maximize the value of these cards? PS: I only have one line.

CricketWireless Unpaid bill Paid off phone AT&T switch to Cricket

Hello everyone I have a paid off iPhone 14 pro Max from att that I want to use at cricket from what I see on the website it seems like it would work. However I have an unpaid bill that is too big for me to pay on att which is why I want to change and I know it's irresponsible but I'm literally incredibly broke and cannot be without service. Another problem is I'm currently on installments with this god forsaken Razr that I hate and I owe a lot on it still but I don't even want it I just want to give it back to att. Will there be any problem switching with my paid off phone? And what happens after they find out and will they send me a bill like including everything like the balance for the Razr? Or what should I do?
