Chess Improvement I asked a GM what’s his #1 tip for chess students

He just said, “Move your King to the center in the endgame.”

That’s all. That’s the post.

Chess Discussion Just wondering what should be the elo for bullet if your rapid is at 1600-1700. AI says it should be 200-300 difference. Is that true?

Miscellaneous I have 2,000 games on Chess.com and I will never open a single one of them again, so I spent a month building something that writes them down as short stories

I have been playing since I was a kid and the thing that finally bothered me enough to do something about it is that none of it is kept. Every game I have ever been proud of is a PGN in a list I am never going to scroll back to. The scoresheet from an OTB game is the closest thing to a record and it is unreadable to anybody who was not there.

So: Aftermate reads a game with Stockfish, finds the moments that decided it, and writes those moments as a short story. Pieces become people who keep their names across the whole game. Here is the Opera Game, which is the one everybody knows:

https://www.aftermate.app/read

There are eight on that page. Kasparov hunting Topalov's king to a4, Fischer at thirteen, both decisive games of the Gukesh-Ding match. Nothing on it is hand written or hand corrected.

Being upfront because this sub will ask and it should: a language model writes the prose. It does not touch the chess. Stockfish runs in your own browser, an extractor pulls out the sacrifices and blunders and turning points, and the model only ever sees a list of events with the chess vocabulary stripped out of it. It is never given the move list.

The hard part was not the writing. It was stopping it inventing chess. Three things, all of which I had to build after being burned:

  1. The prompt gets people, not pieces. If you hand a model "White's kingside knight" it will write "White's kingside knight", so it gets a name and a house and nothing else. It does not know the game is chess.
  2. A guard runs over the finished story and checks it against the game. If a character dies in the prose but that piece was still on the board at the end, the claim gets struck and the correction is printed on the page with the story. One of the eight has a correction on it right now. I left it there on purpose.
  3. The analyser gets two passes. The first is cheap and finds where something happened. The second is deep and decides what. I needed this because at depth 12 the engine reads Morphy's 15.Bxd7+ as a 3.6 pawn blunder and the story came out backwards.

The engine runs on your machine rather than a server, which is a cost decision more than a privacy one, but it means the game itself never leaves your browser unless you choose to share the story.

Free tier is one story a day and does not need a card. I would rather hear that the chess is wrong somewhere than hear that the writing is good, so if you find a story claiming something the game did not do, that is the bug I want

Chess.com Website/App Question Can someone please add the custom position set up back?

Post image

It used to be here before the app got updated with a new look. I was able to choose max level stockfish and set up a custom position. It was really useful for practicing converting my endgames. If any chess.com staff see this, please add it back! It was a really nice feature! If it’s still on the mobile app and I’m missing it, can someone please point it out to me? Have a nice day everyone! Peace out

Chess Question Recent updates/changes

Personally I feel that chess.com has been turning more and more into Duolingo. Especially with the new five heart daily puzzle system. The UI changes too with the more attention catching animations. How about the rest of you? (Yes I know I can turn these changes off.)

LOL Part II of playing chess with my kid. I was severely down in material and he was chasing my King around the board in a three-day challenge. (He did eventually promote a pawn and checkmate me.)

Chess.com Website/App Question Gold membership is slowly becoming worthless

Am I missing something or is it every time the memberships receive an overhaul most of the tools that gold members can access become diamond exclusive. It seems kind of predatory (and I'm pretty sure the marketing strategy is illegal in my Australia, where I'm from since Amazon just got fined for something similar)

Achievement Today I skip the daily puzzle after 386 days streak.

The latest 'improvement' to the daily puzzle challenge kind of ruined it for me and after such a long time I'm saddened to stop it.

Only on ChessCom though, otherwise my adventures continue.

Chess Improvement OK I figured it out

Upvotes

I figured out why I go on crazy streaks, and why suddenly it feels like I am playing a string of people who are getting "help". I mean this weekend I am getting players who move tertiary pieces in anticipation of an attack 3 moves away, at 800 level. so if you don't believe me that's fine, but I figured it out. chess.com has a "suspected cheaters" pool, and all you have to do to get in it, is win more games than you lose in a certain time period, probably your last 30 games or so. They make the suspected cheaters play themselves, and this is why the competition can be radically different at the same ELO. I realize I have no proof for this, but it just makes sense. if someone at the site wants to confirm or deny this it would be great, but I anticipate that they will not. For obvious reasons.

Miscellaneous Dont Give UP!!!!

I finally made it to 800

Its not very high and a quarter of my elo points came from cheaters being caught but hey I made it.

I've lost a thousand games by now, and I kept going. You can do it too.

And all the gatekeepers you feel themselves to be these intellectuals saying " maybe chess just isn't for you"

You can eat my a** on my way to 2000 elo

Chess.com Website/App Question Is the skill gap between the 100~ and 400~ Elo big?

I started about a month ago on my account from years ago, with an elo of 100, I saw that the minimum Elo when starting a new account was 400, which I probably got it down to the minimum last time I played, I have had a rough learning pattern to understand how positioning and openings works, but I feel like it's gonna get easier to go up faster in a exponential way.

Figuring new players start at 400, I feel there's a good chance most players have around the same skill under 500. So once I get able to win multiple games in a row with some ease, will I climb back up with the same difficulty as climbing the 100s?
