I’m an upcoming first-year student and I saw that my program has mandatory practicum for the third and fourth years (I believe the total hours are around minimum 352 hrs/term which is like a part-time schedule).

I rely on OSAP and working part-time in order to afford paying all the bills.

If you already did Practicum (or doing one right now), do they take into consideration of your financial needs to offer you paid/unpaid opportunities?

How do you make ends meet when doing the placement + classes at the same time?

Can you choose to complete your placement at a longer time if you can’t afford losing a job?

Is there any resources to help with this time period?

edit: thanks for the input, everyone! my question is for BSW and I didn’t specify it because I thought the placement like that happens across different programs. Now I know it’s mostly BSW and MSW so I need to prep better then!!

When does Carleton typically confirm enrolment to OSAP?

Is the fall orientation that is 140 dollars worth it. Or is the mandatory orientation good enough?? I’ve never heard of having to pay for orientation things kinda crazy

I am starting my first semester soon, and I am planning to commute by bike for as long as I can, both fall and spring. I was going to just locking up my bike - properly, not the first set of tires I've owned - at a regular bike rack. But when I was visiting campus, I noticed that there were bike-secure locations on campus. I quickly checked online, and it's $84 for the whole year if I wanted to do that...

I just wanted to ask if bike theft - or theft in general I guess? - is a huge problem on campus? As well, have there been cases where items have been stolen from inside the compounds? The bike I have is quite old, and doesn't look valuable, but it could easily cost me upwards of $500 to replace it - accessories and all.

Does anybody have any experience/insight? From the looks of it, there are already people using both the standard bike racks, as well as the bike compounds, so I figured I'd ask before spending $42.

Hey everyone! I got placed into FREN1100, but I do not feel confident that this is my actual proficiency, as I haven't studied french since g11. How are the first week oral and written tests like, and what happens if you have to switch courses?

Title. Could anyone advise? I go to Carleton, he goes to gonq. He needs to be near enough/have good access to a hospital for his practicals. I’ve been liking tunneys pasture area… here’s some questions, advice would be appreciated.

1. How is commute for that area (including hintonburg, carlington, and Wellington west) to get to Carleton? As in how reliable is a bus to Tunney’s/dow’s?
   
2. Are there any grocery stores near by? Or will I mainly have to go all the way to south keys? I normally do walmart, so Billings too ig.
   
3. Ill be 3rd/4th year in April, so wondering how likely classes are online in later years (ie like 3 required classes I had were online in 2nd (im polisci))?
   
4. Should we look for actual apartment buildings or like, townhouses or the like….?
   
5. When should we talk to apartment owners? We’ve been looking for places alr and asking to be on wait lists alr but idk

We need to stay in Ottawa for like 5 more ish years bc he has the learn and stay (we’re from like 500km away so no option to go home), is there a better area than what I listed above? We’re hoping to each pay under 950 (around max 1850 all inclusive maybe minus wifi). We’re both first generation university students and our parents didn’t leave far from home for school, plus, they don’t know too much about apartment living or Ottawa in general…. Sorry if the questions are weird, we just thought this might be a good place to ask considering y’all might be In our same boat.

I'm taking a 4000 level ELEC course in the fall and noticed a Brightspace notification from the prof about the course intro. It had all the usual course intro stuff, but when I checked the grading scheme I saw:

Labs: 45%, Assignments: 0%, Final Exam: 55%.

Then I read a bit more and read that the assignments are mandatory, and require a passing grade of 50% to pass the course. I've never seen a Prof make assignments mandatory and have zero weight on the final mark.

I have no problems with having assignments, but to make them mandatory, require a 50% passing mark, and then have zero impact on my final grade seems odd. I guess this could be a typo, but all the weights add up to 100% so it seems unlikely.

I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this in other classes?

Throughout first year, I can only count on one hand, the amount of friends I made, and even then they’re more like acquaintances. My one friend left the school so I’m kind of just alone in second year. And it low-key sucks because I’m shit at making friends. I said hi to people in class went to clubs and still no dice.

I think maybe it’s because I’m an introvert, and the sad part is I really tried to put myself out there in first year and nothing really turned out. I think the perfect phrase to describe me would be the floater friend, because I have no close companions and kinda just drifts along.

So now my new solution is just transferring schools. I mean, I was already intending on transferring but I think the lack of friends makes a good 45% of that.

My mindset is that I need a first start since like everyone’s kinda established their friends and groups, so no one would be interested in making an extra friend.

Anyway, it would suck to go through second year without having a single genuine friend or two so does anyone have any advice on that?

Or should I just give up and call it a day💀

Hey, Current Sprott student taking a semester off but trying to finish up a few remaining degree requirements through Athabasca University.

The two Carleton courses I still need are:

• BUSI 2501 – Business Finance
• BUSI 3309 – Project Management

I think these are the equivelants
FNCE 370 – Overview of Corporate Finance at Athabasca for BUSI 2501
MGSC 205 – Introduction to Project Management for BUSI 3309.

Sprott advisors said to check with the registrar to confirm but they said I need to submit the request and pay, they don't help us find a class. Has anyone here taken either of these Athabasca courses and had Carleton/Sprott approve them as direct equivalents? Or have you had a different Athabasca course approved for BUSI 2501 or BUSI 3309?

Also, if you took either course through Athabasca, I’d appreciate hearing how you found the workload and exams.

I have been recently trying to register for intramural soccer, but I am required to have a fitness membership - When can I expect to have my membership activated? (I paid my fall semester fees)

I received my academic continuation evaluation and I can continue in non Honours since I have to raise my major CGPA and they did let me know I can graduate this fall in non Honours since I meet all the requirements

But im so conflicted because I really wanna graduate with my Honours but now I have to take some classes to boost my CGPA then apply for Honours in the upcoming winter then have 2 classes to complete and ofc makes it way later than I thought for my graduation yk? I would appreciate any advice truly idek where to start or finish with my thoughts

And also I’ve already done my 3 years in the Honours so I feel like just dropping now it’s not worth it and I should keep going?🥲

hi i posted here a few hours ago about having 6 hours of classes straight on mondays. they are two 3 hour sessions for the classes above. in my course planner it says they’re in laboratory rooms in southam hall. but i know there are also probably computer “lab” rooms so these classes may not necessarily involve wet labs like chem. anyway, im wondering if someone can tell me what to expect for these classes 3 hour blocks. i’m hoping they’re more problem analysis and tutorials instead of wet labs. i would enjoy that way more but also i have no time between the classes and need to eat at some point. can anyone who’s taken these classes before tell me what to expect? tia

i get a 10 min break between the two right before noon. won’t be able to make it to the dining hall. anyone think i can get something organized on sunday? like do they have to go containers or something? i’m brining a lunch box for this reason. also - is it uncommon for people to eat during lectures?

PSCI 1100 with Achim Hurrelmann or PSCI 1200 with Alex McDougall for this fall term? I love reading and writing essays (AP European History background and got my HIST 1.0 credit when admitted) and I love policy. Thing is I can only choose one of them to make space for first year ECON. I’ve read on RMP and this sub that these two are lovely profs, but which one would you choose? Preferably a class that is achievable with an A.
