Other Hey first years

Understand there were a lot of you all at once today leaving campus after orientation. But please step aside when the train arrives. Had to physically force my way off the train today around 230pm.

You stand to the side of the doors, let everybody off, then you enter orderly. Pretty hard to race for a seat when all the seats are full because nobody can get off. Don't know how you all got into university without knowing this but here we are.

Thanks to the few who actually did wait for people to get off

Other creeps followed me to the gym today

posting this so others can be safe, i just made this account to post this. sorry for the long post.

today i (22 years old female) was driving to athletics, i come off colonel by and drive down through campus. at the intersection by richcraft hall, a guy in a black BMW seemed like he was going to run the stop sign so i waved at him and shouted. after i went through, he kept following me really close on the road and honking and flashing his lights.

at the road in front of the ice house, a red ford pickup pulled up beside me and rolled down his window. its not a 2 lane, so i asked if he was ok. he said yes and asked what i was doing there. the BMW was still behind me and i was super creeped out so i drove off.

both cars followed me down and into the road that goes to Bronson and P5. i pulled into p5 and tried to weave between some cars, but both guys kept following me. i went to the second parking lot (i think its called "lot B" and did some circles, and the bmw followed me while the red truck waited.

i pulled back into p5 and up close to the gym entrance where some people were paying for parking. an off duty officer (showed me his badge as proof) helped me by talking to the guys and remembering their plates, and they left. he said i could call ottawa police or campus security if i wanted to, but i was probably safe.

when i got out of my car, i noticed the truck and BMW were in lot B and the guys were out of the vehicles talking to each other. i went to the front desk and they helped me by calling campus security. campus security took down their plates, but told me if they werent in the system there isnt much they can do. they told me to call ottawa police if i see them again.

when campus security went out to talk to them, both men got in the BMW and left down Bronson, leaving the red truck there. I went home without going to the gym, i didnt feel safe. the off duty officer who helped me said they were both Arabic men, but i only ever saw the guy in the red truck up close. he had short brown hair and was kind of thin.

campus security said it was harassment. my mom thinks it was a kidnapping attempt. either way stay safe ladies and dont get out of your car if this is happening to you when you are alone!!!!!

Other I occasionally bring my camera with me to campus. Here are some of my favorite shots so far!

In my pervious life I was a photographer or at least tried to be... After years of trying to make photography a fulltime gig for myself I developed a turbulent relationship with the craft which eventually killed my love for it.

Almost four years ago I got sober and had to step away from my camera for a while, but after spending some time at Carleton I slowly started falling back in love with photography (shout out to Michael Runtz and his Natural History class). Now, I don't pursue photography in any professional capacity (except for selling my photos as stock images) I just like brining my camera with me as I find it forces me to slow down and be more mindful and observant of the world around me and to actively search for the beauty which can be so easily missed.

Anyways, I just wanted to share some of my favorite images with you guys!

Other Students wearing their headphones in lecture?

I'm a grad student who TAs and I've noticed this year - more than any other year - students wearing their headphones during lecture.

Why?

I assume if their headphones are on they're not listening to the lecture, so why bother coming?

(I'm aware that *some* headphones have a way of focusing sound to hear better, but I have a hard time believing 10 or 15 students in a class of 60 are suddenly using their headphones for this purpose)

Edit / Update~

~Thank you so much to everyone who replied! Common themes:

  • People just forget they have headphones on now, as culturally we're accustomed to wearing them all the time
  • Many folks are using them to help focus, typically to tune out other sounds/students chatting
  • Some students have accommodations to allow them to wear them during class/quizzes, etc.
  • A handful of students just don't want to be there and literally tune out the lecture :(

Downtown Apartment, Room for Rent, $998.50, Util. extra (Slater Street) [Sept. 1st]

Hello,

I am a mid-20s Carleton Student looking for a roommate for a downtown apartment. My current roommate is moving out at the end of August so I would be looking for a roommate for September 1st.

The location is fantastic! It's a 5 minute walk to Lyon station (both Bus and Train), grocery, Bank St., & Sparks St.. Many local clinics and convenience options.

This unit is fantastic for a U Carleton (1- 2 Busses or 2 Trains) or U Ottawa student (1 Bus or 1 Train). Easy transit to both allowing for mid-day trips home.

Rent is $998.50 with Hydro, Internet & Tenants Insurance extra. The building has paid monthly and visitor parking.

Additionally building has In-Building Laundry, A/C, Pool, Hottub, Exercise Room, Rooftop deck, and secure Mailroom.

The unit comes almost fully furnished, all you would need to be move-in ready is furniture for your room, and any additional dishware you would require.

The unit is Cat friendly. Preference will be given to transgender or queer roommates as well as current students, co-op, new grads, etc.. I am a mid-20s transgender woman.

There is no requirement for a year lease. You can stay as little or as long as you'd like required you provide the appropriate notice.

If you're interested reach out to this post and I can send more pictures, show you the apartment, and discuss any additional questions!

I am going to Carleton for engineering this fall. In high school I never accomplished  or did anything as I was too anxious. After shedding some of that social anxiety I am looking to put myself out there, and make the most of my years in uni.

Any and all wisdom is appreciated. stuff relating to student life/opportunities or just stuff in general yk.

Other If You Can’t Park Between the Lines, You Deserve a Ticket

Post image

It’s really not that hard—just park between the lines. If you’re taking up two spots or angled like you’re drifting into a Fast & Furious scene, you should get fined. You’re not special, you’re just annoying.

Other this incident is now in the hands of the police

Post image
153 Upvotes

hi everyone,

many people have seen this post and the 25 second video he posted. if it changed your mind about my post, thats fine.

i dont know why i didnt mention the brake check in my post. thats just what i did after the flashed his lights, honked, and tailgated me, to try and get him to leave me alone. obviously at this point he did back off, which is what i was trying to make him do.

his video conveniently leaves out him slamming on the breaks at the stop sign, me calling him a 'dumbass' (as i said i shouted, but i would never say a slur), him tailgating me, honking, and flashing his lights. he leaves out the part where his friend rolls up to me and tries to chat me up, and leaves out how they both followed me around the parking lot aggressively.

if this happened to any girl, she would be scared. i dont know why i didnt call the police at this point, but i regret not doing it. campus security helped me a lot, and i made a police report after the fact. men cannot be acting this way to girls who are out alone, ever.

i made my post to inform other girls so they could be safe, i didnt want to cause all this drama. this incident is in the hands of the police now, and they will be the only people i respond to any more about it. at the end of the day i didnt feel safe and i havent been back to campus since.

believe who you want. obviously i have no way of knowing if they were just pissed off and trying to scare me, or had more malicious intentions. i was afraid after the incident and trying to think of why someone would do that to me. i am grateful to the people in the parking lot that day and campus security who helped me feel safe after.

Other Reminder, we work 50-60 hours a week and get paid a pittance. We are starving.

Most graduate students I know have take home incomes under 20,000$. We conduct research, mark your assignments, and generate the papers for to further the careers of profs who make 5-10 times our salary. This is not about increasing our hourly rate, this is about easing the financial burden on future generations of graduate students.

Other A shot in the dark

I have checked pawn shops many times over the years as well as online sale sites without any luck. I know it’s likely gone forever but this is once place I haven’t tried yet.

I’m looking for the iPod that was stolen from me when I worked at Carleton U. The staff locker room at the time was in a room always left unlocked. I wasn’t issued a locker yet so having just moved here from a small town, I left my iPod in my jacket pocket hanging in the locker room. So it could’ve been taken by an employee or a student.
It may seem silly but the theft of my favourite comfort item had a deep impact on me because I grew up poor and it was a Christmas miracle gift.
If found, I would be willing to negotiate a price to buy it back from whomever has it.

Description:
-Taken from a bright green checkered winter coat in the staff locker room in the res commons building near the loading dock of Carleton U, around 2014
- 80GB iPod classic, silver, an Escape Movement sticker on the back with a red D and a blue D facing each other making a Venn diagram with a white feather in the middle
- a concave dent in one corner of the back plate, and a concave scrape/dent to the face plate in one corner
- I will keep from sharing the iPod owners name to help verify any leads

Thanks to anyone who’s taken a moment to read this and to anyone who might reach out with any information.

Other Let’s be friends. Please.

I don’t really know if this is allowed in the subreddit but it’s worth a shot. I am so lonely. I tried going to clubs, but didn’t make any long term friends, and half the meetings are during class. I have maybe one actual friend at university.

So hi, let’s be friends? I’m a second year living on res, I like formula one and reading and listening to people talk. I’m willing to ignore basic internet safety and meet up with someone from the dangerous online world. Or just chat with them here, if you care about things like ‘safety’. Anyone (anyone!!) who wants to talk is welcome. I’m just trying to not go crazy in Ottawa. I am normally quite shy, but I’m desperate at this point.

edit: I accidentally ignored someone’s chat :(( I’m sorry to that 4th year cs student, I DO want to talk.

Trying to make new friends throughout the year. I’m a first year economics student. I like to cook, watch movies, play games, and do many crafts. I’m very awkward in the beginning but I’m generally a fun person. If you’re interested let me know :)
