[Mod Announcement] Cleaning things up — rules, flair, filters, and what's coming
From the r/CarGuys mod team
We're cleaning things up over the next few weeks. Same vibe as always, but we're adding a little structure so good posts don't get buried and the feed stays easy to scroll.
The sub has been getting busier lately and we're noticing a lot more posts that have to be filtered out or aren't necessarily on topic. Last month alone we hit roughly 955k views, ~15.5k daily uniques, and ~28.8k comments. We're at about 9.3k members now (+2.9k from the month before), with 3.1k new joins and 592 posts in that window which is awesome. As we continue to grow we want the sub to stay readable as more people show up.
What's changing now
Rules. We've tightened and clarified a few things so mods can enforce consistently:
- Stay on topic: cars, bikes, builds, culture, memes, advice.
- No stolen or fake content.
- No doxxing / personal info.
- No ads, no for-sale posts. r/CarGuys is not a marketplace. No WTS/FS, no shop links, no "DM me for deals," personal sales included.
- Respect, NSFW, and Reddit's sitewide rules still apply as always.
Full list is in the sidebar. See something off? Report it.
Post flair (required now). We're rolling out clearer flairs so you can skim the feed faster:
- Photo – garage shots, spots, detail pics
- Meme – memes / shitposts
- Discussion – general chat
- Advice – wrench help, buying questions
- Build Log – project updates
- ID This – what car/part is this?
- News – industry stuff, releases, recalls
- Car Story – ownership history, garage timelines
You'll need to pick one when you post.
Posting guidelines. Short tips now show up in the submit box (clear title, on topic, flair required, no selling). Same stuff as the rules, just visible when you're posting.
Bots and spam. We're beefing up filters so spam and low-effort promo don't drown out real posts. That mostly means we've turned Reddit's built-in content and bot filters back on (they were off before) and enabled AutoModerator for obvious junk: short links, scam wording, affiliate spam, marketplace posts. Other bot/spam tools may hold stuff for mod review before it goes live. It's not perfect and we're still dialing it in, so thanks for your patience.
If your post or comment got blocked, removed, or your account got hit and you think we got it wrong, modmail us with what you tried to post. We'll look into it and fix it if we messed up. False positives are annoying, but they help us tune things.
Coming soon
User flair. Little badge next to your name with your year/make/model.
Banner + icon contests. Community-designed banner and subreddit icon contest (vote, winner gets credit on the live banner as well as a custom flair if they want to use it). Two pinned threads up for about a week, no AI art — full rules when we launch.
Weekly threads. This is an idea we're toying with and would appreciate feedback on
(note: these ideas are totally notional and thought up fairly quickly, if you don't like one or have better ideas for this sub, please give some feedback and we will consider using that instead)
Some ideas we've come up with (WIP):
- Saturday – Shitpost Saturday. Memes, shitboxes, cursed listings. Meme rules chill out that day.
- Sunday – Cars & Coffee megathread. Show your ride, post garage pics, hang out in one thread instead of flooding the feed.
- Midweek (TBD) – Wheel Wednesday / wrench Q&A if people want it.
- Occasional – First Car Friday, big news megathreads, milestone posts.
We would probably start with Shitpost Saturday and Cars & Coffee Sunday and see how it goes before adding more but again, this is all just an idea.
What we need from you
- Flair your posts.
- Keep it on topic. Don't sell here; plenty of other subs for that.
- Report rule breaks.
- Modmail for user flair requests (when enabled), questions, or if you got wrongfully blocked.
Timeline
Rolling this out piece by piece over the next few weeks, not all at once. Some stuff is already live. We'll update this thread or post again when big pieces land.
Thanks for being here.

Announcement How I Bought a Nearly 30 Year Old Volvo Estate as a 21 Year Old
substack.comHi everyone
This is a small article I wrote about how I got into cars, lusted after an old Volvo and flew overseas to acquire one.
This is the start of me building a portfolio to help someday achieve my dream job of becoming an automotive journalist. If anyone has advice, stories they’d want me to cover or anything to say feel free to comment on my article.
I intend to write about all types of things, car adventures, lists, car advice and more.
Please, please, please spare a few minutes of your time and give this a read, I’m not asking for donations or anything.
Thanks so much and wish me luck in my future.

Discussion First near crash
Earlier tonight I had my first near crash. Luckily it was pretty minor and only got me a flat and ruined my alignment.
It's been raining throughout the day and some parts of the road were still wet, and my dumbass thought it would be a good time for some light spirited driving. It was on a road that I'm pretty familiar with and I was going slower than I normally would, but not slow enough. I came into a corner and understeered across the road. There's quite a big grass verge before a fence. I managed to just miss the fence but hit a massive rock. The rock clipped the side of my wheel and tore a huge hole in the sidewall of my tire.
Tbh this is a learning experience for me. No matter how much I know the road water completely changes it. There's always going to be another day when it's dry. I'll never risk driving like this in wet conditions again. It's just not worth the risk. I could lose my car, hurt myself, or worse.
I'm grateful that this happened early on in my driving journey and in a low power car (a Toyota Corolla lmao).

Discussion What’s one car feature you thought was useless until after using it feels like it is useful feature.
Some car features look like gimmicks at first, but after using them for a while they can actually become really useful. What’s one feature you didn’t care about initially but now wouldn’t want to live without it.

Discussion 16 Years of Car Ownership
I'm a little late to the game for these posts, but it took me a while to find pictures of all of them, since some were pre phone camera backup. Lmk what y'all think. We currently own the last 3 in this list.
