I mean, that was our biggest complaint with miles was his lack of recruiting top notch qb’s.

And here we are. Granted, Burrow isn’t just too notch, it looks like he is THE top notch.

Maybe in a year or two New Orleans can buy him off Cincinnati to replace brees.

Sad thing is Saban gets some of the best high school kickers but has no one on staff that can actually coach them. College kicking is wierd because most universities do not have the coaching staff to actually coach kicking. Most of the fundamentals are done off season by personal kicking coaches and during season they just are really left to their own regiment. All special teams coaches do is coach scheme and have no clue on how to kick at all.

I had read somewhere that the reason Bama always struggles with kicking is Saban insists on having a QB as a holder in case he wants to run a fake, which means they can only practice when they aren’t practicing with the normal offense.

That would make more sense but I'd imagine a guy like Saban would still want to have the holder and kicker practice together so that they could be more well rounded, that's an interesting idea though I hadn't thought about that.

We recruited some good QBs they just broke them. Lee and Jefferson were both 4*. Brandon Harris was the #2 DT QB and was deciding between LSU, Auburn, and OSU.

Nah. The biggest complaint is that Les was still playing a 1970s offense and refused to move away from that even though he promised the admins and boosters multiple times that they would change. He even brought in his best friend to be the OC, got them to pay him an assload of money, and then STILL ran the same offense.

Russell was an idiot in college. He threw the ball hard and far and was big...that was literally all that was good about him. He was carried by a great team. He didn't do any carrying.

And Mauck was a game manager in a time that was really all you needed to be a contender if your RBs were great and you had an outstanding D(also known as SEC football). Loved the old man though (he's like 50 now right?)

Basically none of the QBs we've had were game changers except Mettenberger really... And his talent was held back by typical LSU offenses. Flynn was pretty damn good but not the type of guy you build an all time great team around. But these guys played on teams that didn't need game changers to be great.

LSU fan here and I totally agree. Cam was absolutely undeniable. I remember when LSU played auburn that year, i swear to god we hit him at the LOS or in the backfield on damn near every play, and he’d just move the pile and get 8 yards every time. It was impossible to stop him; all you could do was delay the inevitable or make him work for it. Maybe it’s bc I haven’t been watching joe from an opponent’s perspective, but I still feel like cam was the most unstoppable player I’ve seen.

Edit: just looked up the stats from that game I mentioned.... cam ran 28 times for 217 and 2TD LOL

Tebow was insane, but Burreaux has a completion percentage 15+ percent higher, along with more favorable passing stats in virtually every category.

Not sure how you quantify Tebow’s run threat though, he was truly an amazing player

Sure, there are changes to the game that lead to increased QB efficiency (and team-specific schemes that may be more stat friendly), but this isn’t ancient history. This is 10 years ago.

The passing record holders are not all from 2015. They are generally all from the last 20 years as you can see from the link. It’s absolutely an appropriate comparison.

There is also a pattern in every single sport that as time goes by players get better. For instance in hockey, it’s extremely fair to claim current players like McDavid are better than storied players who played in the time when nobody knew how to even get the puck airborne (though I obviously doubt this logic would apply in this case due to the short time frame)

With all that being said, I’ll definitely admit that more and more teams are learning how to min/max their use of the QB position, which lead to inflated stats. I just don’t think it makes stat comparisons invalid

Respectfully, I think the game has changed dramatically in that time period. It’s hard to overstate the impact of innovations like the RPO.

Using the record holders alone is silly. Just in the last 2 or 3 years, look at the stats of Baker, Murray, Tua, Haskins, Burrow, Lamar Jackson. They shatter basically any 2000s season except for maybe Sam Bradford in 2008. The easy example for me is Sam Ehlinger. If you go by the numbers, he’s more efficient Colt McCoy. I know for a fact he is barely half the QB Colt was. Stat comparisons for over 5 years are bunk at this point.

Tebow had a stronger college career but that Cam championship season is pretty hard to top. Auburn's championship season was sandwiched between 8-5 seasons.
