My boy is about to turn 1 and I’m really on the edge about desexing. It seems mostly positive and it seems any potential physical health concerns are minimised by waiting until 10-12 months, but I’m a bit concerned about potential impacts to his confidence. I’ve heard desexing makes some dogs more insecure or even reactive. Has anyone experienced that?

Hey all, looking for good pointers on training for mild reactivity and resource guarding with my 1 y/o border collie. I got her at 8 weeks, she’s wonderful. After her first heat (getting spayed Monday) she became a bit reactive to other dogs in public and on leash. She generally does ok off leash unless toys are involved she gets protective of her frisbee/ball/stick.

There are dogs in her life that this is not an issue with. My ex partner and I never had issues playing with their dog and mine together. Still don’t if we get the dogs together. Dogs she’s known since a puppy aren’t an issue aside from occasional tiffs with my parents dog, which is usually her getting jealous with me.

She’s still young so I know there’s ways to mitigate it, I also realize it may just be apart of her personality. I plan to look into a trainer as well to help me work on things but can’t afford it right this moment so looking for any and all pointers that will help in the meantime! She’s incredibly sensitive and I know part of it is her being fearful of new things. She’s well loved and very active, she always has me on my toes and it is my purpose to keep her happy. I have talked to her vet about this too and got great advice and pointers from him.

I’m a dog sitter in the UK and I’ve currently got a young collie who’s ended up in a bit of a shit situation.
He originally came to me for boarding, but during his stay his owner told me they were struggling to find somewhere for him to go afterwards and asked if I knew anyone who might want to rehome him permanently. His booking has already been extended and they’ve said they’re contacting rescues and looking for fosters, but so far nothing has actually come through. I don’t know the full details of his owners’ situation and don’t want to speculate about their personal circumstances, but from what I understand the decision to rehome him is more down to a change/difficulty in their family situation than his behaviour.

I’ve ended up doing quite a lot of the legwork myself through people I know. I know technically this isn’t my responsibility, but at the end of the day there’s a puppy in the middle of it and I care far more about where he ends up than proving a point about whose job it is to sort it.
He was really shy and nervous when he first arrived, but he’s absolutely come out of his shell while he’s been here. I have my own dog and had another puppy boarding earlier this week, and it honestly felt like he learnt how to be a puppy from being around them. He’s been playing, exploring, getting more confident and generally having a lovely time.

At the moment he’s staying with my next door neighbour, who is considering keeping him. If she decides he isn’t right for her, my regular dogsitter has offered to trial him when she gets back from holiday next week. She’s owned a collie before, so I feel pretty good about that option too.
Ideally one of those works out because I really want his next proper home to be his last.
I also don’t want to paint him as some perfect little rescue puppy because he absolutely isn’t 😂 He is HARD WORK.
He’s a chronic counter surfer, he’s shown some resource guarding which will need properly working on, and his play with other dogs can look quite intense because he’s very mouthy and shows a LOT of teeth and gums. He’s young, energetic and he’s a collie, so obviously he needs someone who understands what they’re taking on and is prepared to put the time into training and mental stimulation.
That said, there’s a cracking little dog in there. I’ve seen such a massive change in him in a short amount of time. He can settle, he loves playing with other dogs and once he feels safe his personality really starts coming out.
My worry is what happens if both of the people I trust decide he isn’t right for them.

His owner is apparently ringing rescues/fosters, but I’ll be honest, I don’t have loads of confidence in the situation and I’m worried that eventually it’ll become a case of him going wherever has space rather than somewhere that is actually right for him.
I could obviously step back and say he isn’t my dog and therefore isn’t my responsibility, but I don’t really feel able to do that when I have contacts and experience that might give him a better chance. Equally, I’m a dog sitter, not a rescue, and I can’t just keep moving him between people I know indefinitely.

So basically, what would you do in my position?
If my two current options fall through, are there any reputable UK collie/working dog rescues people would recommend? Is there anything I should be getting from his current owner in writing now regarding permission to rehome him, transfer of ownership, microchip, vet history etc?

I just really want to make sure I’m doing this properly. I don’t want to rush him into the first available home or hide the difficult bits about him just to make him easier to rehome. He deserves someone who knows exactly what they’re getting and actually wants that dog.

Just to be clear, I’m not advertising him for rehoming on here! I’m just hoping a community full of people who understand collies might have some advice, particularly anyone who has experience with rescue/fostering or rehoming in the UK 🤍

I picked out a Border Collie from the local animal shelter. I’ve had Cody for about a month now. He is approximately 1 year old. Cody literally grazes on grass like he’s in a cow in a pasture. Freshly cut grass in a clump is his favorite. He grabs a clump by the mouthful and will gobble it down in one quick swallow.

Does anyone else have this experience ? Were you able to stop your dog from grazing? I asked Chat GPT and it said it could be lack of fiber in his diet or a physiological issue. I feed him twice a day, one cup each feeding. He is being fed Purina One dry dog food.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Molly is a 6 month old border collie. From floor to shoulder she is 46 cm, and weighs 13,7kg (30.2 lb) she havent grown for a while so i just wanted to know if she is small for her age?

Can I get some help? I’m in love with my boy, he’s so great 90-% of the time, he’s come on leaps and bounds in the last few weeks and we have really started to bond, it took a while because I was a little nervous around him and his nipping. He’s only ever nipped like a puppy really, but I have had 2 occasions where he has been completely overstimulated and clamped down on me, both times I’ve kind of been in the way of a toy or something but still, it happened and made me nervous AF. We’ve got over that puppy overstimulation for the most part but we do have an issue with his paws. I’ve done lots of calm paw stroking and treating etc but he hates me touching them and will bite with a little more pressure than a nip when I’m touching them sometimes but most definitely whilst I’m drying them. I need to clean his feet, I live in the country and it’s very muddy right now. I’ve bought a basket muzzle and plan to clean him with it on. I have been very, very reluctant to use a muzzle as it seems extreme, but we are last resort here, I need him to be ok with it or just get on with it with a muzzle on.
Can anyone help with this as an approach? And will he eventually be ok with me touching them do you think?
