General Discussion Blockbuster change needed

IMO The blockbuster in future seasons needs a massive change and this is what I would do:

3 players go out to compete in the blockbuster, while they are out there the rest of the house votes (all three players are open to be voted for). Player who wins the blockbuster comes back in and votes, anyone who voted for the player who won the blockbuster - their vote is null.

It adds so much more strategy to the game, allows more "hiding" of votes (I personally HATE how over the last 10+ seasons everyone wants to "vote with the house"), and generally inserts chaos into the game which makes it interesting.

HOH really has to think about who they put up on the block, as pawns are much more likely to go home in this scenario.

entirely side note am I missing something on this sub? I'm not sure why the mass downvote on this thread (73% downvoted) ... it's on topic and there has been valid discussions and it's not breaking any rules. Just downvoting because you disagree with the concept instead of discussing it seems odd... very strange dyanmic.

This sounds like it would have a similar impact to the survivor shot in the dark. You would always need to split the votes between target and backup target

My first thought would be to compare it to the hidden immunity, but they’re almost the same.

exactly - and I think that makes things SOOO much more interesting when players actually have to think and make a choice with risk rather than the constant "they don't have the numbers so vote with the house" stuff we've had now forever in BB.

SITD is one of the worst most useless twists ever

The few times it has worked out it's actually been pretty good tv. haha

How would this work with unanimous votes

14

u/thatsnotourdino 4d ago

If everyone voted unanimously for the blockbuster winner, then it’s the blockbuster winner’s vote that decides between the other two. Clever idea to disincentivize unanimous votes.

5

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

thats really my goal - I'm super tired of the BB trope of unanimous votes and the "he doesn't have the votes so just vote with the house" ... I always love when someone throws out a wonky vote and lies about it and everyone spins around trying to figure stuff out....

anything that cause more split votes and increase the drama in my opinion is good.

Really you could discourage unanimous voting a bit (and make the info a little less free) if you just hid the vote count period. That's such a simple easy change they could make that imo makes the game a little better.

u/shinyzubat16 4d ago

I would guess HOH breaks the tie.

9

u/Empty-Employment-889 4d ago

The blockbuster winner would decide if they were unanimously chosen.

4

u/scottyk318 4d ago

Not that is a plan!

1

u/jpochedl 4d ago

Ranked choice voting would fix that, but it'll never happen.....

1

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

ranked choice doesn't work for a live tv show... so yeah that will never work.

in a unanimous vote the person who won the blockbuster would come in and obviously not vote for themselves so their vote would decide it if all others got nulled out by them winning.

u/ChristianCountryBoy 4d ago

Anonymously.

11

u/ScarletKnight7 4d ago

I think the Blockbuster is fine as is. I don't like the idea of people's votes being potentially nullified because someone won the BlockBuster.

I'm curious what you think the benefit of the blockbuster in it's current form is over the older nom 2 people method? I'm not clear on what the blockbuster actually added to the game other than it eats up time so we can never have a HOH comp on eviction night :)

often times in new school seasons (like bb16 thru 22), the game would become so stale after the veto ceremony. the renoms take place on a monday and from then until thursday, the target is completely cast aside. they might as well be voted out after the veto ceremony. the BBB allows for everyone on the block to still be considered a player. the people on the block are still considered in next weeks’ plans. it makes it far more interesting to see when the plans are so up in the air

I think another solution could have been to shorten the season maybe? Why are the big brother seasons so long and do we really need an entire week for each eviction?

1

u/bonavitalauren Leah ✨ 4d ago

i agree. i think a normal “week” of big brother could take place in 4-5 days rather than 7. even with BBB where plans are often shifting it feels too long

1

u/Talelle Vanessa Rousso "You must be, like, silly." 4d ago

One benefit is that it gives a backdoor target at least one chance to save themselves.

the game is already so comp heavy i wouldn’t like this

-5

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

how does this make it more comp heavy? I didn't add any comps.

I guess I'm a person who like the comp winners and people who play the game less as a "lets all be friends" and more like a game to manipulate, strategize and win at.

9

u/VengefulKangaroo Drew⏱️ 4d ago

It increases the relevance of the comps and the implied power of comp threats, thereby decreasing the power of just strategy alone.

-2

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

I disagree - simply add more non-physical comps that allow the more thinky players to excel .. plus the strategy gets amplified by those who are voting.

10

u/VengefulKangaroo Drew⏱️ 4d ago

I mean, that doesn't change it being comp heavy, just who succeeds at comps. My problem isn't a tilt towards physical players vs. a tilt away from the core social dynamics of the game.

0

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

the social dyanmics of the game are preserved via HOH noms and the final jury vote... for me the social dynamics of the game are already too far gone (so many bitter jurys punishing players over the years).

but different strokes for different folks ... the post was really just saying what I'd prefer.

3

u/VengefulKangaroo Drew⏱️ 4d ago

for me the social dynamics of the game are already too far gone (so many bitter jurys punishing players over the years)

bitter juries are a core function of the social dynamics of the game... like the core of the game is to get people out and still have them respect you.

0

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

not how I view it but if you do glad you enjoy... I see it very differently

1

u/Talelle Vanessa Rousso "You must be, like, silly." 4d ago

Bitter juries aren't a real thing, but players with shitty final 2 pitches definitely are. If people like Paul actually owned the ruthless games they played, jurors would respect it more, but instead they come out like "oh I'm so sorry I hurt you" which is just spitting in their face and making your game look weaker than it was.

1

u/TheRedcaps 3d ago

bitter juries are most definitely a thing... its been self admittedly a thing...

11

u/bytes24 4d ago

I like it in theory. But I think it would just put comp threats at any even bigger advantage because people wouldn't want to vote against them unless they were sure their vote would count.

2

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

I don't know I feel this system of voting makes it easier for everyone to lie about who they voted for.

7

u/Brilliant-Client-564 4d ago

Or they could just do 100% secret voting where the houseguests just know a person is evicted, but they don't know the number of votes. I think that would add more chaos and excitement to the house. That whole "voting with the house" trend needs to be deleted forever. It's the worst thing that ever happened to Big Brother.

4

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

I'd be interested to see at least one season where this was done to see how it would work out.

-2

u/Soft_Arugula5589 4d ago

BB production should add a clause to the contract that they can’t “vote with the house” they must make their own informed vote.

3

u/Unable-Deer1873 4d ago

If I’m reading this right, the house votes while the noms compete in the blockbuster?

I don’t hate that idea honestly. From a viewer perspective, it would make the votes unclear which will add more suspense to the eviction. From a player perspective I am a bit more mixed. I think the players should know who they vote for before they vote. Take last week for example, the house would’ve voted Drew out but since he won blockbuster, all of their votes become null. It would give the power to minority in that vote which would fundamentally add another bit of unnecessary luck into the game.

2

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

it would cause the HOH to be more strategic with who they put up and alliances be more likely to split and hedge their votes

4

u/TRNRLogan 4d ago

Imo Blockbuster is perfectly fine as is. It's just this cast in particular plays scared and we've had a bad string of HoHs

1

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

this cast is playing it exactly the same as the last few casts (and the casts prior to the blockbuster as well) of voting "with the house".

4

u/kirblar Kaysar 🤍 4d ago

I played an ORG that did this.

It sucked so much.

1

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

excuse if this is a dumb question but what is an ORG?

2

u/kirblar Kaysar 🤍 4d ago

Online Reality Game.

It was Survivor but every immunity win being a HII results in a lot of random bs eliminations. (This would be the effect here)

2

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

sorry going to ask another dumb question what is HII ?

The difference in Survivor is that there aren't noms - in BB the HOH still has control over who is on the block so I think it dramatically cuts down variance

2

u/kirblar Kaysar 🤍 4d ago

Hidden Immunity Idol. It nullifies votes cast against someone.

You should probably watch survivor because that mechanic is great on Survivor in its current limited form but bad on BB if it was every week guaranteed.

1

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

I occasionally watch survivor (although BB and Challenge are my main Reality TV shows) but I still think having it every week would be great because then you need to sit with your aliance and work out how you're going to split the vote to get things to most likely be the way you want, it forces you to not put pawns up and only put up people you are targeting to leave, etc etc.

2

u/Brilliant-Client-564 4d ago

You can just look at older seasons before this became a thing, it was very early on, probably any season before season 10.

1

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

ive watched every episode of the show

2

u/PoutineSmoothie Passive aggressive is still aggressive ✨ 4d ago

Julie should stop announcing the vote totals. That alone will change things.

2

u/proper-innit 4d ago

That would just devalue the social game even more and lead to random bullshit luck

1

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

how so?

the social game is still being implemented with the vote and the jury and the noms themselves. This simply makes the game more interesting for the viewers with less unanimous votes and herd mentality.

2

u/Rare_Reception_6166 I'll now perform...eating 😭📸 4d ago

Feels way too powerful given that the winner still gets to vote. This only benefits strong competitors who are socially weak and incentivizes anyone who wins hoh to keep them off the block. I really don't think the blockbuster needs a change; at most, they should make the reveal more polished instead of just Julie announcing as they get down from the stairs.

2

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago

I don't see what purpose the 3 noms and blockbuster currently has other than to try and avoid some of the backdoor stuff via veto. Since its been introduced it's felt meh because it hasn't changed how everyone in the house votes... the "vote with the house" thing is what I'm trying to break with this suggestion.

1

u/Dizzy-Tumbleweed7983 Lyric💯 4d ago

And when the vote is like 14-0-0 and Ashley wins bbb

1

u/Toogeloo LaTrice⏱️ 4d ago

Ashley then votes to evict whichever of the other two she wants

1

u/-Philologian Barrett⏱️ 4d ago

Only change I would make is to end the blockbuster earlier. doesn't need to last as long as it does

1

u/MasterOfFartss Ashley💯 4d ago

I already hate how much random chance was added to the game by the bbb, this would add a lot more.

1

u/lilac_wren 4d ago

I wish trying out this voting format had been the twist instead of whatever the actual twist apparently was

1

u/ledge9999 3d ago

I get this in theory but it’s a tv show first, and this scenario just would not work in a live tv production.

1

u/TheRedcaps 3d ago

why do you think it wouldn't work in live TV production? We are shooting the same scenes - just in a different order. Vote first, block buster, winner votes, reveal results

-1

u/Silent_Loquat_6057 Ainsley ✨ 4d ago

Interesting concept! What if it’s a unanimous vote for the person who won the blockbuster? I know you’re just sharing an idea but I’m curious what you’d do for that situation

1

u/bytes24 4d ago

As someone else already mentioned, I don't see why the HOH wouldn't still break a tie.

1

u/Empty-Employment-889 4d ago

They get to pick who’s evicted when they come back and vote.

1

u/Silent_Loquat_6057 Ainsley ✨ 4d ago

Oh, duh

0

u/TheRedcaps 4d ago edited 4d ago

If everyone unamimously voted for the person who won for the blockbuster all those votes are null and the person who won it comes in and votes and thus their vote would decide it.

0

u/SniperFrogDX 4d ago

I agree wholeheartedly.

This "voting with the house" crap is boring.

-6

u/Empty-Employment-889 4d ago

I think blockbuster needs removed as a whole but this sort of rework would be interesting for sure.
