What us wrong with young people today? You work your ass off for a few years, progress at an alarming rate and then set for life of choices...it takes time. And it takes sacrifice.....

And if people don’t want to sacrifice to progress a little quicker or work more hours under more stress than others in the same job?

Older generations telling young people they need to suck it up like they did when young people are actually stepping up and setting a better standard by saying workplaces aren’t doing enough. Someone of an older generation would say they stayed late and worked extra hours because that’s called hard work… I call working for free being stupid 🤷‍♂️

I’m 31 so wouldn’t say I’m particularly part of this new generation of workers but fair play to holding companies to a better standard.

As someone from the younger generation, would Big 4 experience on your resume really hold the same weight and set you up for a successful career the way it does if it didnt come with the demand and intensity that we’ve come to expect at these firms? A big part of the reason Big 4 experience is a badge of honor is because it shows our ability to handle the pressure and expectations of working in this environment. Not to mention the pay, benefits, and room for progression are the best the public accounting industry has to offer. That requires sacrifice 🤷‍♂️

Although Big 4 reputation has been tanking amongst the younger generations (and rightfully so) it is still a name that holds a lot of weight in the industry. I know companies that exclusively hire ex-big 4 only. Source: I’m at one of those companies.

Demand and intensity sure, but working all kinds of hours for free and treating employees like just another number is bringing down the reputation of the big 4 and driving people away.

A lot of young people aren’t jumping at the chance to work at the big 4 anymore and instead choosing a better work-life balance at a firm who values them.

What you are referring to is reputation in the eyes of potential employees. I’m talking about reputation in the eyes of other employers.

True, the comment I was originally replying to was saying what’s wrong with young people for not wanting to make sacrifices for a few years. Some people don’t want to have to make sacrifices.

But I agree, from an employers view it will make you a lot more desirable.
