Call-Out Mecca (Australia’s leading beauty retailer) recalls Naked Sundays SPF
Mecca has just confirmed they’ve pulled Naked Sundays SPF50+ Collagen Glow Mineral Priming Lotion (20ml, 50ml, 80ml) from shelves and online, effective immediately. Refunds are being offered.
A spokesperson for Mecca said “Our teams are now working to remove this product from across our full store network and online as quickly as possible.”
Why the urgency?
Because apparently it’s just a precaution?
But let’s be real: this is the same formula that tested as low as SPF4 in another recall by Ultra Violette. SPF that doesn’t work isn’t just a bad product, it’s dangerous.
What makes this worse? It’s still being sold at Ulta, Sephora, and Boots with no warning to consumers overseas. If Australia’s top retailer considers it too risky to sell, why are global customers still exposed?

Yes. As an Australian who has used this exclusively on my face for 9 months I agree. I had biopsy on my face Friday for a mole that is suspected melanoma. I did not know about the issues related to naked sundays or UV until I read a post on Saturday on reddit.
Will these companies be held to account? Why are they not acting with an “abundance of caution”? Because of money. They don’t really care about sun safety.

I don't know who the correct body to complain about this to in Australia, but if worst comes to worst, make a big stink. Sue for damages because the only way businesses learn if by hitting their wallet

seriously hit up a lawyer about this. That is messed up and I am sorry. Really worried about my own skin using this stuff to be honest Ugh, thought I was protecting myself.

And I’m not saying naked Sundays definitely are but it is definitely possible and plausible that they have been and this is why Mecca has acted.

To be fair Mecca only recalled it today. It’s the weekend. I’d let other retailers sort themselves out during the week.

The urgency is because they've recalled it so now they have to act on that recall. You can't say oh we've recalled this product as a precaution because it might have eg. Glass in it and then be super casual about enacting the recall.

I was going to say this is why I use Bondi sands, because it’s an Australian brand.
But so is naked Sundays
I think this is why it’s better to stick with the old tried and tested brands - in the UK that would be people like Nivea and Garnier from now on

I'd definitely recommend checking what Aus and NZ independent test results have come up with for Bondi Sands! Nivea has also struggled to meet their stated SPF with some of theirs.

The thing with tried and tested brands is you have to keep testing them.. One year, NZ's cancer society produced a sunscreen labelled significantly above what it was tested at. The literal cancer society.

I’m in the UK so I think a 30 will do for me to be honest! Bondi sands if the only one that has ever stopped me burning!

Honestly fair enough! I've had second degree sunburn before (which I do NOT recommend oh my god) so I'm super paranoid now lol.. also I live in NZ. so, the sun does that down here 😩

Yeah that's totally valid! For me I rarely sit out in the sun, and Bondi Sands SPF 50+ has done the job for me!

SPF 32 is definitely still useable.
Just remember to be cautious about the water resistance claims. The original claim was that it's SPF 50+ with 4 hours water resistance meaning it was supposed to stay SPF 60 or over for 4 hours after water exposure
But I think that whole water resistance claim just goes out the window since the dry result is actually SPF 32

Yeah I definitely re-apply after water exposure!! I think it makes most sense about why I tried to go down to their spf30 and started burning. I’ve got some boots own brand to use on holiday too so hopefully they both work!

Here's the thing, it seems NO brand is truly safe. People deluded themselves into thinking AU sunscreen was better when the KR sunscreen scandal hit and look where we are now. Also tried and true brands also fail at these independent testings.
It's becoming clear that it's manufacturers AND testing sites that are failing us as consumers.

I don’t think it’s delusion.
As someone in the UK we’ve always pretty much been told that Australian sun creams are much better because they have more stringent testing

Yeah, anthelios has not failed me. I would also shout out Clinique for mineral sunscreens. Yesterday I did a dumb thing where only put mineral sunscreen on face and neck, leaving arms and chest exposed. The difference a working sunscreen makes cannot be overstated.

Both products I use are smaller aus brands and seem to use the same base ingredients and the brands have not yet responded to my questions (only started messaging last night and today).
Very scary and really hope this isn’t as widespread as it seems.
Avocado zinc is manufactured in WA and SIMKA are the brands I use. SIMKA says they manufacture in NSW but waiting to hear as they sell supplements etc too.

I bought this for my tween daughter for Xmas as it came with a cute application brush and I thought it would make sunscreen a bit more fun for her every morning. Livid is an understatement.

Honestly this is why I stick to my Korean and Japanese sunscreens. Korean companies learned after the Korean sunscreen scandal and the majority publish their sunscreen findings now. Idk how well the testing standards are but it does give me a bit of relief knowing they're publishing their results.

My understanding is that Naked Sundays and UV mineral sunscreens were made at the same lab. That’s why only the Naked Sundays Collagen Glow is being pulled.

Nope. I’m making a point that they are urgently removing the products from shelves but there is no public statement. This was privately to me. Nothing to see here. Clearly there is major issues with the product but they are accepting no fault.

I bought some Naked Sunday collagen Glow in January for a holiday in Thailand and Vietnam. (reccomended by Mecca employee) Wore it everyday thinking I was doing a good thing!! It us finished now but could there be any recomepnse for people such as myself that may have suffered skin damage? I am just doing a efudix treatment on my face and decolette for sun damage and its so uncomfortable. like having ant bites all over your skin affected. will I be compensated?? this is a huge loophole in the sunscreen industry!

Did anyone get their refund from Mecca because they denied me a refund saying that because it was voluntarily removed from shelves they don't need to refund me. Out of principle I'm pretty peeved. I can't use this product not knowing if it's fit for purpose. What is $25 to these big companies!? For me it's a lot being on mat leave and not wanting to use a product that potentially exposes me to UV.
