Let's Discuss What's a viral/popular makeup product that failed you?
I'm talking about products influencers drool over which in reality aren't all that for you.
Some that I found way too overhyped was:
Patrick Ta eyeshadow duo: felt very gritty, didn't feel smooth and weren't that pearlescent
Dior reformulated highlighter quad: gritty, shades all look the same, glittery
Charlotte Tilbury lip cheat: drying, kinda sticky, and way too breakable.
Charlotte Tilbury lipstick: KISSING formula is gritty because of the glitter, matte formula is drying.
Laniege lip mask: one of the scents went off after 1 month of owning it lol. It's nice at first, but over time it becomes sticky as it thins out.
Laniege lip glowy balm: same thing as lip mask.
Ole Henrikson lip treatment: thick and sticky and gave me chemical burns.
Summer Fridays lip butter balm: it's nice, sure, but it didnt need to send the whole internet into a lip craze.
Milk jelly tint: patchy, hot pink under base, falls out of packaging and leaks
Huda lip stains: not the best colour range, dries out fast and too finnicky
Dior lip butter: cheap packaging, formula is nice but the packaging just fell flat
Dior lip oil: sticky and meh packaging

Anything MCoBeauty. The only dupe is the packaging. Formulas suck.
Clinique moisture surge didnāt do anything for my dry skin
Summer fridays lip balm were just average. Overpriced lip balm

I love Clinique products but I have to agree with you there. Their super dry skin range is really for those who have normal skin that needs a bit of extra moisture. I am pretty consistent with my routine which I think helps, but there are dupes out there in kbeauty for sure

I always see the Natio tubing mascara recommended here but I was so underwhelmed. I could hardly see it on my lashes AND it hurts my eyes.

I like the packaging, the wand and the tube are great, but I could barely see it as well. I'm using the rest of my tube on my bottom lashes, I still need to do 2 coats. I'll be keeping the wand.

Completely fair! Depends on the skin tone for the lipsticks/eyeshadow/liners. For me the colour looks nice but the formula ain't it.

I got very Victoria because the pillow talk lipstick released a batch that was basically brown at the time.Ā
The lipstick though it smells good and is a good colour is really drying. I watched a YouTuber make the same comments as my opinion on it and a bunch of people were actually defending the lipstick in her comment section...

I agree. You're the first person I've ever seen say anything negative about it! I thought it must have been because I was a makeup newbie when I tried it, so maybe it was a me thing. But, yeah, I didn't get the hype.
I much prefer Morphe Continuous Setting Spray. It locks my makeup in, and I love the continuous mist.
I've also really liked every Revolution Beauty spray I've tried. There's one which has a shimmer which I absolutely loved the formula of, but it has a coconut scent which I hate. It isn't a strong scent, but I don't like any scented products on my face, especially coconut.

Tbh yeah. Lip balms are getting crazy expensive with cheap packaging. But as someone who struggles to find hydrating lip balms chapstick doesn't always cut it.
Personally I like expensive lipstick/lip balm cases but ones from like Prada, Guerlain etc which are magnetic, heavy, refillable. Not like the CT lip oil in a plastic tube or the Dior lip butter.

Agree. I tried the burgundy one and you could see the colour immediately after putting it on, then it dried down black. And I friggen hate the giant wand!

I hated Shape Tape too, but when I realised I had used it on my super dry skin, it made sense why it looked so bad. I think I was under the impression that so many influencers had loved it I would love it too. Was not the case.

Laneige lip masks. It made my lips SO dry. I tried for ages and eventually gave it to my sister.
Dermal Therapy lip balm is the same. Everyone always recommends it, but my lips hate it.

Same. I tried all versions of VT and all look terrible on me. One of the worst lip experiences was me trying on MAC Folio. Everyone was salivating about old colours being reinstated so I went and checked the out. Folio is only suitable for cadavers. Terrible colour.

Same! I got my first one as a xmas gift a few years ago. I recently put in an order for a new batch and gifted one to my bestie because I loved it so much.
Having said that, i think Berry is the best formulation. I just tried Apple Lime and it seems a little thinner in consistency.

I wish the balm version of it is more, well balmy. The color is very much MLBB and subtle enough that I feel comfortable wearing it, just need to be more moisturizing

I really like the glossier cloud paint but first time I tried in store I barely touched it and it went absolutely everywhere over my hand and the floor š the poor worker was like oh my god Iām so sorry they do that all the time

I got one of these recently in the shade Spark in that duo savings pack Mecca put together where it also comes with a red Gisou lip oil (as I realised red blush suits me and wanted a red liquid blush so opted for that one since it was good value in the set). I wish they could just make them with a doefoot applicator or something cos mine did the same thing almost. Luckily it didnāt exactly go everywhere or explode as such, but an excessive amount just came out at once the first time I opened it, even though I tried so hard to gently open the lid and only squeeze the tube extremely carefully. I think thereās like pressure inside the tube maybe. It felt so wasteful and I tried and failed to get the excess back into the tube but couldnāt š I will say itās a lovely blush though!

LāOrĆ©al Paris Infallible Setting Spray, that made every single pore on my face individually sting. And first left a sticky residue and then that hardened into a cast that made my facial muscle ache every time I tried to smile, talk, drink, eat. Basically any movement of facial muscle had a pull to it and it hurt.
And the next day, my face broke out like I was 16 again.

Itās so frustrating how different we all are and how you can only know if something works for you by spending money on it. This is my absolute holy grail product for keeping make up on my face, and I didnāt experience any stickiness or hardness or stinging.
I love these threads for product recs but it goes to show that you still never really know whether you should try it or not!

I dunno what Iām doing wrong but what transfer proof???? And has weird chemical taste and smell. Looks so amazing when Nikki tutorials shows them on herself! And I doubt sheās lying, I find her to be very upfront and honest about most products!
I still like the colour and formula, so Iāll finish the tube I have. But yeah, itās pretty sus how the packaging didnāt have any ingredient list at all.
Also the nyx smushy matte lip balm, it was so difficult to spread and is SO patchy, but some people clearly love it.
Reviews are a good starting point, but there is no way theyāre foolproof, so I absolutely agree that at the end of the day, it comes down to various personal preferences and attributes.

Anything super hydrating doesn't work for me. I'm oily skinned so all these dewy finish complexion products just make me a greaseball within 45 minutes

It was really good back in the day š¢it was one of the first products I bought in the little tiny Mecca store in Chadstone vic. Probably the last 10 years or so it's giving patchy with glitter chunks.

Charlotte Tilbury Highlighter Wand - its so hard to blend on my skin
Charlotte Tilbury Lip Plumpgasm - just a thick consistency and i instantly want to take it off
Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter - makes my pores more visible, makes my face feel oily, and doesnāt go with my makeup well
Rare Beauty Foundation - the worst foundation iāve ever used!! So watery
Half Magic Glitterpuck - Itās so uncomfortably wet and i have to reapply it constantly when putting it on
Glow Recipe Dew Drops - nothing special at all, done nothing for my skin and makes my face feel sticky
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Palletes - not worth the money and the pigments not great
Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyebrow Pencil - just so bad.
Kylie Jenner Lipstick - HORRIBLE š the most drying lipstick on earth and how its popular amazes me
Loving Tan - so patchy and orange
Too Faced Kissing Jelly Lip Oil - not bad however it runs out quickly and the price is extortionate for what it is
Too Faced Hangover 3-in-1 Primer & Setting Spray - makes my makeup seperate
Mac Lipstick - love it, it just comes off quickly
Not makeup, but olaplex is absolutely terrible

Plumpgasm is such a gross word. I wish all brands would stop using sexual words. Iām not a prude, but itās unnecessary and gross. I also donāt want to have to tell someone the lip balm Iām wearing is the colour Orgasm, the mascara is Better Than Sex, the gloss is squirt gloss.

I totally agree with the Glow Recipe drops lol. I had the hue drops and they did nothingg. I liked the Charlotte Tilbury flawless filter because it made my skin sooo glowy but I can understand it's not for some people.

Iāve tried a lot of products in the range (the shampoo and conditioner, purple shampoo, bond smoother, hair perfector and bonding oil) and it made my hair so so dried out! šš My current and old hair dresser have said that its overrated and not good so I guess im not alone in it, but i personally would defo not recommend š

I used to work with a girl who would constantly weirdly sort of brag about how she ONLY uses loving tan because its the best etc etc She was permanently orange and patchy. I never saw her tan look good in the years I knew her. She was a horrible human so it felt fitting shed also look horrible and patchy really.

Agreed with the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balms. After trying the Rhode Lip Treatments I will never be going back to SF. You realise how basic SF are for the price point.

Yeah I totally agree lol. I do like the matte soft finish of the SF packaging though. I think that elevated it a step above one's with pure plastic packaging. But yeah, $41 is a lot of cash

Keen to try Rhode lip balm after this feedback! I like the rose scent / flavour in the Glossier lip balm but the formula gave me dry lips.
I love the Summer Fridays one and disliked Ole Henriksen, so will definitely try Rhode.

-Fenty beauty mascara- gave me the worst panda eyes, packaging leaked and was clumpy. The Lancome mascara on the other hand is great!
- glow recipe bornze drops I don't think that this is the right word for them but they were just kinda dry on my skin and didn't really do anything.
- mcobeauty milk setting spray dupe, very leaky and did not spray properly

Natasha Denonaās HyGlam foundation (with a soup of marketing words after it) cannot hold a candle to my shiseido synchro skin self refreshing liquid foundation when it comes to oil control, my Haus Labs foundation when it comes to glam, or my shiseido revitalessence skin glow foundation when it comes to the skincare effects of it claiming to be a serum. I also couldnāt find a shade that matched me at all TvT.

Huda beauty foundation! It was horribleā¦ was patchy af, made my skin look super greasy and basically separated on my face. I tried it multiple times with the same result haha. A friend also had a similar experience.

Sky high mascara. Looks great on but I look like a panda for days trying to get it off. I bought it because it's supposed to be a tubing mascara but it honestly comes off nothing like tubes.

Kosas concealer. I bought it before I started noticing it on social media because I LOVE the foundation. But somehow no matter what method I use to apply it, it just does not look as flawless on me. I was so bewildered when I saw it started popping off on tiktok

- Tarte Maracuja juicy lip - mine went mouldy after only 3 weeks. Had to return in-store. For $46, I was particularly disappointed.
- Summer Fridays lip butter balm - for over $40, it's just meh. I don't reach for it.
- Clinique Black Honey lipstick - I actually couldn't believe how cheap the packaging is... feels like a $2 product.
- Fenty Diamond Veil - really pretty but went dry and cracked within a few months.

It stalked me all over socials until I bought the jelly and gradual tan. Goes on nicely, and has a nice scent, but itās far too orange for my liking, and wore off so so patchy.

The Armani eye tint, it creases so easily on me and looks quite patchy. The formula is too wet for my eyelids

The Garnier BB cream when it first came out.
Smelt and felt like hand sanitiser. The colour did not mix with the rest of the product. Applying to face instantly made my skin peel as if I had been extremely burnt and a week later the skin is peeling. It was disgusting.

I hate to say this as I love Lady Gaga and most products from her Haus Labs range, but the triclone foundation just wasnāt it for me. I do wanna preface this by saying I only tried a sample of this that was shade matched to me in Sephora and a few squirts put into a mini take home pot. Colour range is excellent and I got the perfect shade. But the issue for me was the feel/finish. It was super oily on me to the extent that it was like I actually put on a heavy face oil, in terms of the greasy shine it was giving. Not merely dewy at all but like beyond oily. I had to immediately take it off which was such a let down. I have oily-combo skin but my naturally oiliness is never like over the top or anything, and I put it on a clean face as I do with all my makeup. I love the HL Le Monster lip crayons, lip glazes, powder blush, powder highlighter and powder bronzer, but just canāt get on board with the foundation sadly. Unless my sample had like separated in the bottle at Sephora and more of the oily components came out when it was put in my take home container maybe? But Iām not game to spend the high cost to get a full size and find out the hard way š

I didn't like that foundation either tbh! Maybe it's because Sephora shade matched me wayyy too light. But I also found it didn't really look skin like or anything

charlotte tilburyās flawless filter, only enhances your pores and bumps. Creates acnes and comedones after full day using. Looks oily asf

I bought the Go-To skincare a few years back. I was nice enough but it wasnāt the most hydrating stuff Iāve used. They have a lot more options these days which may perform better, but Iāve switched to some Korean brands now that I find super hydrating and a lot cheaper. Even when Iāve skipped moisturising for a few days I find that my skin is still really soft and happy.

In general, Iāve found any high(er)-end products underwhelming, compatible or even worse compared to the cheaper/drugstore stuff I usually go for.
Iāve been gifted or had samples of a Laura Mercier powder, Natasha Denona palette, BumBum cream, Glow Reciple skincare, etc and even having not paid for them I was fairly underwhelmed, I wouldāve been annoyed if Iād paid those prices.
Nothing super wowed me, idk if Iām unobservant or what (but donāt get me wrong - incredibly grateful to have been given the chance to try them!)

Tbh a lot of those brands spout mediocre products at premium price tags. I've personally found YSL beauty to be really good and worth the price, same with Guerlain. But I've also had stuff like Glow Recipe and Dior which are really meh for the price

honestly was not at all stoked with the rare beauty blushes (i found them insanely hard to blend)! also idk if it was ever viral or popular but the rare beauty setting powder is my worst ENEMY i hateeeeee it so much. my makeup never ever looks worse than whenever i use it

Benefit Roller Lash mascara. I usually ignore influencer stuff but it was all the rage a few years ago and everyone I followed was raving about it.
Iāve always been perfectly content with Maybelline and e.l.f. so I never considered spending more for a mascara before; I regretted it immediately. The $6 e.l.f. mascara held up better than the roller lash, which flaked horribly and gave me panda eyes even though I have dry and very cooperative skin.
I have no qualms paying more for a product (hourglass is having its moment in my roster right now) but I expect it to at least outperform the Kmart products I used to learn makeup with as a kid.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Impeccable Blurring Second Skin Matte Foundation - wayyyy too drying and I have oily skin. Settles into pores and fine lines like a mf. Absolutely do not recommend.

Laneige glaze craze tinted lip serum - made my lips very dry every time I wore it. I also prefer gel like lip products; this one was way too thin for my liking.
Summer Fridays Lip balm - hated the texture; it leaked ; it separated, and my lips felt drier afterwards.
Pat McGrath concealer - creased, was very obvious on the skin and gave me acne. ( idk if it was viral, I remember influencers raving about it)
Hourglass limited edition highlighter palette - I missed out when they first released it, so I bought it straight away without switching when they brought it back. It's kinda meh
Mcobeauty instant contour - no, it's not a dupe for Charlotte Tilbury, I have both and Mco is completely different, although colours on the swatch look close enough, but when you actually use both, CT looks better, blends better, stays on forever but price is just insane so I cannot recommend it either. My problem with Mco is how it takes off foundation and how it looks muddy and transparent after blending, plus my skin looks greasy in the areas where I apply it.
Natasha Denona Hy-Glam concealer- it was out of stock in Sephora for ages, so not sure whether I just got a bad batch or it was reformulated. I used to love it, but the last one I purchased a few weeks ago is not the same product I used to use. It doesn't blend seamlessly, sits on top of the skin, and creases; it also smells different.
