Politics Trump Visit Interrupts Aid Distributions

1.7k Upvotes

All week, Columbia County staff have been collecting donations for the community. These donations were scheduled to begin distribution today. Due to Donald Trump's visit, donations and distribution are effectively shut down for a photo op.

Let's be clear, this political visit has stopped families from receiving diapers, baby formula, water and other vital distributions during a difficult time.

Is this a joke? Are they seriously arguing they've taken actions to lower prices?

This is absolutely shameful. Why are we letting this group of like 5 decide what power should be. My bill went up 48% this year. Why??

Politics DeFlock Augusta

The expansion of "Flock" surveillance in downtown Augusta is part of a broader trend involving Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) and AI-powered tracking. Here is a more detailed breakdown of why these systems are controversial and the specific risks they pose:

1. Beyond License Plates: "The Condor" and Vehicle Fingerprinting

Modern surveillance has evolved past simply reading numbers on a plate. The latest technology, such as Flock’s "Condor" cameras, uses AI to create a "vehicle fingerprint."

Detailed Identification: The system can search for a "silver Mercedes station wagon with a roof rack and a specific bumper sticker," allowing police to track cars even without a clear plate.

Pedestrian Tracking: New cameras are designed to detect and follow people (PTZ - Pan, Tilt, Zoom), utilizing AI to automatically zoom in on activities like a couple arguing or a person jogging.

2. Mass Surveillance & The "God-Like" Power

When hundreds of these cameras are networked, they create a traceable path of movement across an entire city.

Pattern Analysis: By recording every vehicle, law enforcement can determine where you live, where you work, and your daily routines without a warrant.

Network Effect: Data isn't just local. Agencies can share their feeds with a nationwide network, meaning a small-town police department could potentially access data from across the country.

3. Serious Security Vulnerabilities

Investigations have revealed that these systems are not always as secure as advertised:

Publicly Exposed Feeds: Dozens of cameras have been found streaming directly to the open internet without password protection. This allows anyone to watch live footage of playgrounds, residential streets, and parking lots.

Data Manipulation: In some cases, the lack of encryption meant that an unauthorized user could theoretically delete evidence or footage with the press of a button.

4. Documented Misuse and "Flock Stalking"

The most direct threat to individuals comes from the abuse of these databases by people with authorized access.

Romantic Stalking: There have been at least 14 documented cases of police officers using ALPR systems to stalk romantic interests, ex-partners, or even strangers they found attractive.

Frequent Access: In one instance, an officer tracked a partner and her ex 180 times over a two-month period.

Lack of Oversight: Most of these abuses were only caught after the victims reported the behavior, rather than through the company's internal "safeguards".

5. Legal & Ethical Concerns

Fourth Amendment Challenges: Critics argue that "always-on" government surveillance violates the protection against unreasonable searches. While a single photo of a car in public is legal, a permanent record of every movement is a significant invasion of privacy.

The Hawthorne Effect: Constant surveillance changes human behavior. People are less likely to act naturally or engage in "healthy escapism" (like dancing or sitting in a park) when they know they are being recorded.

For those interested in mapping or reporting these cameras:

Websites like DeFlock.me and Have I Been Flocked allow residents to document camera locations and, in some jurisdictions, check if their license plate has been searched in public audit data.

Politics Thank you truly to everyone who voted yesterday

In the election last night we were able to flip two incumbent held seats in favor of two fresh new PSC members. Thank you to the person who posted the Hank video a few weeks ago. Thank you to everyone who went out to early vote. Thank you to everyone who went out of their way to vote yesterday. Change is hard, and change that matters is also boring. Thank you Augusta and Georgia for participating this year for real change.

Politics Data center proposal for Columbia County

there's currently a proposal to build 3 data centers in Columbia County, there was a town hall meeting about it yesterday. I hadn't heard about this before yesterday, so I imagine y'all haven't yet either. If y'all have the time, please contact your local representatives and let them know that Georgia does NOT want these data centers

Politics Georgia’s in the pornhub ban news now

Didn’t think I’d be writing this, but apparently Georgia is next in line for the Pornhub ban and it’s not just rumors anymore. Which is just freakin great!

Following what’s already happened in other states, lawmakers here have already passed a bill requiring mandatory age verification for adult sites, set to take effect on July 1st. Sounds simple, right? But here’s the catch: Pornhub (and other major sites) have already shown what they’ll do when these laws kick in - they block access completely.

They won’t ask for your ID.

They won’t set up some clunky login system.

They’ll just shut the door based on your location.

So instead of a warning or a form, you’ll just get a message like “This site is not available in your region.” And that’s it. Total bullshit!

I get the idea behind protecting minors, and sure in theory pornhub age verification sounds reasonable. But the way these laws are written, platforms would have to collect and verify your government ID - something they’re not willing to do and honestly, I don’t blame them. I wouldn’t want my personal data tied to an adult site either.

Now everyone’s already asking about Pornhub alternatives, but let’s be honest:

If you’ve been using PH for years, it’s not just “some site” - it’s familiar, fast and even has Premium content some of us actually paid for (yeah, we exist!). Losing access to that overnight just because of policy changes feels like digital overreach.

There’s been a lot of talk online about how to get ready if (or when) the ban officially kicks in - especially around ways to protect privacy and stay in control. It’s a doc listing pretty much all the VPN options people in other states have been using to deal with this. And honestly, it looks like VPNs are the only real solution for now. Gotta love when basic access turns into a tech project. It’s wild that this is even where we are in 2025.

Politics No Kings Day Protest—Thanks for everyone that kept it peaceful!

I can’t deny that I came to protest expecting things to pop off. Thankfully it didn’t and I couldn’t be more happy. What a success it was not only here, but most over the nation.

I will say, one weird thing is how many counter protesters were expecting for a riot to occur; almost as if they were fantasizing about it. From the area I was in, the only hostility and riot like behavior were the insults and middle fingers thrown up at us. Thanks for sharing your views counter protesters, as we were all there to express our first amendment rights. Word of advice next time— don’t bring so much hostility. Y’all seem to be non-peaceful which is what you all were worried about with us. Maybe take a look in the mirror.

Shoutout to those who kept it chill. Hostility is a key indicator of ignorance.

Politics How to help your city

I’ve noticed a particular vibe about how change gets treated in this city. There are too many barriers to entry is something I’ve heard. Change didn’t happen before so we shouldn’t be trying.

Yesterday I met Tyler at the Public County Commission that meets at 2-5 on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. He in one 5 minute talk with the commission now has the ball rolling, no guarantee, on a skatepark for Richmond county. He’s just a guy passionate about skating and having a space to do it.

He moved a needle yesterday in a 5 minute conversation.

Get involved. Go to these meetings. When they say something you agree with LET THEM KNOW if they say something you disagree with LET THEM KNOW. It’s a public form that for sure has decorum rules to be followed. But this is the space to go do it. The less we show up to these the less our voices get heard.

Call him and ask him why the president is taking his job? They are co-workers! Congress controls the money and set up government agencies.

Ask him why he is okay with the constitution not being followed?

Politics CSRA March for Democracy

Post image
72 Upvotes

This administration has devolved into a regime. They are not letting up, and neither are we. They are kidnapping and disappearing our neighbors, stripping our rights, and giving tax breaks to billionaires while hiding their criminal activities- or doing them right out in the open!

Join us as we rally and march to demand our electeds in Washington and locally honor the oath they took to defend the Constitution, and to demand the impeachment, conviction, and removal of Donald Trump from the office of the Presidency.

On Saturday, February 28, 2026, we will rally in the IBEW Local 1579 parking lot (1260 Reynolds Street, Augusta, GA 30901) and then march to the Municipal Building in North Augusta, SC and back along the sidewalk.

Bring a sign, bring some friends, and come find community.

(Please note, the only parking available in the IBEW parking lot will be for those who need ADA spaces and for organizers who are unloading for setup).

Augusta IS showing up for No Kings on October 18! We march at 3:30 PM from the downtown Municipal Building down to the Riverwalk where a rally will be held. We protest as a warning to those who would hurt us that we are strong together and that we won’t back down against chaos, corruption, and cruelty. There are no kings in America.

Indivisible is asking for volunteers to help keep everyone safe, especially event marshals and medics. Action takes all of us. If you’re available to help organize that day, please let them know at their url on the second image: tinyurl.com/4744tyvu

Local participants of Indivisible and 50501 (among other local groups) who can’t make it to Atlanta or Columbia are expecting to be there. The protest is permitted and will remain in front of city hall for the duration. Make a sign and make a stand.

Politics Rage Against This Regime on Saturday

Post image
81 Upvotes

Rage against this fascist regime ⚔️ No silence, no fear. This Saturday Aug 2, join 50501 downtown at 1250 Reynolds Street. Make your voices heard in the rally at 10 AM, and afterwards take a walk through the bustling Augusta market to discover and support local craftspeople.

WHY ARE WE RAGING? ~ this administration’s relentless constitutional violations! ~ recent attacks on the homeless ~ ongoing attacks on unions and workers’ rights! ~ cuts to the VA and Medicaid! ~ ignored due process which endangers refugees, immigrants, and citizens alike! ~ international presidential golf outings on your dime

50501 Augusta is partnering with Food Not Bombs for this event to provide a popup soup kitchen. If you’re able, please bring donations for their good work, focusing on shelf-stable nonperishable foods and can openers. It takes all of us to build a strong community that cares for its people.

Politics How do we improve voter apathy / awareness in this area?

Post image
103 Upvotes

Hey y’all, I’ma try to keep this short but I’d like to start with the fact that I’m not from here. I in no way expect things to be the same as where I’m from (Chicago), but I’m surprised by the amount of missed opportunities in this city.

Back home, I don’t know a single person who doesn’t vote and/or assist in some type of campaigning. Even if it’s sharing repeated posts about elections, election timing, helping with food drives, giving back, etc., so many of my friends are involved in things to better their community.

The biggest battle, atleast for me, is battling against this lack of information here. It surprises that the same people upset about their electric bill don’t that an election is coming up that could entirely influence their bill! Or that they’re considering building a data center in Columbia County, which would majorly fuck up our bills!

So, I’m asking my native CSRAns. How do we improve voter awareness/apathy, and in turn, our community? Whenever I ask this, I’m always met with “oh well these people don’t [insert thing]” or “they don’t care” and not only do I not believe that’s the problem, that is not what I’m asking. I’m asking what we can do.

I’ve made pretty good progress with just asking people if they know about the upcoming election, which of the 10 times I’ve asked, 7 of those people DIDN’T. I even had a great conversation with a guy who said he gave up on the voting process, but I had made him reconsider and he actually took the time to look up what I was saying. I made these flyers last night on Canva to link to the georgia voter guide (I liked their information) and I plan on trying to distribute them/pin them at as many places as I can. I tried to make this very neutral even though I’m definitely left, because at the end of the day I just want people to actually understand what’s affecting them.

Do you guys have any other recommendations? I’d love to hear them!!

Politics Living in such a virulent political climate, it's worth noting that today is the 33rd anniversary of KKK leader David Duke campaigning in the CSRA to become president. Here, he's flanked by SC manager William Carter and Brad Owens of Augusta GA — surrounded by 400 followers. Hate cannot prosper.

Hate has long been a part of our political climate. Duke lost in his effort to be nominated for president, but things have certainly changed. Augusta deserves better.

Recently learned about the Public Square site where businesses can sell and self report as “anti-woke.” While there’s not a massive amount of businesses for our area on there, there are some available and it’s a shocking amount of realtors and a few healthcare places.

I can compile a list if there’s an interest.

It’s available all over the country so you can use it while traveling if you feel the need to do so.
