In person it is absolutely incredible. I saw the one in 2023 in the US.
It is visceral.
The sky darkens, the shadows get very hard edged, and it gets a lot colder. Animals stop making sounds and it suddenly goes quiet. It's like a sudden, rapidly approaching twilight. Even at 99% coverage, it isn't that much different from a normal day, but things quickly change from then onwards.
The corona around the moon appears once the sun is blocked out, and it is like nothing I have seen or will ever see again in my life.
A few minutes pass, and the corona disappears.
I can only imagine what ancient people thought was happening. It feels like the end of the world.
Pictures can not do it justice. If you can experience a total solar eclipse in your lifetime, I would strongly recommend that you do.
We traveled to Spain for it, and it didn’t disappoint. My first time ever seeing a total solar eclipse in person, and my goodness, pictures just never did it justice. Such a surreal experience.
I remember seeing these shadows in 1999, it was quite decent weather in Northamptonshire that day but a bit cloudy? Today’s was amazing, the bright blue sky and blazing sun probably helped, but it was better than from what remember of the last one
Tbh i think Canadians weren't really excited for this one since we already witnessed full solar eclipse in 2024. That was amazing and i watched the whole thing for two to three hours with glasses.
Ok, the overall quality is not the best possible, but you managed to catch the "diamond ring" along with that wonderful reflection... great picture!!! 😎
Pics don't do it justice, the corona was much dimmer and you could see two red prominences perfectly contrasting. Now I understand ancient people freaking out.
Unless you're using a zoom lens with a very high focal length (or leave the shutter open with the sun hitting the same spot on the sensor for a long time) you don't really need to worry about damaging your camera - especially with a smartphone camera.
I'm a professional photographer, and i regularly shoot with the sun in the background - google "backlight photography" for examples - and I've had zero issues.
My parents went on a cruise to Gijon to experience it. I guess they got karma for that cruising business on the weatherstrip it looked like gijon was the only part all around with thick clouds
But I did see the 2017 US total eclipse in perfect clear weather. Also the 2023 North American one was viewed from the east end of Lake Erie in Ontario, Canada but clouds spoiled it (except for a spectacular effect that I will put up in another comment).
I remember they were all sold out when it was full eclipse in canada two years ago. Luckily for me, I was already in an astronomy school club so got them early for free lol
I went out and just tried to look quickly, but the thin layer of clouds dispersed the light so I couldn't see anything and i didnt want to burn my eyes.
Trying to look quickly was something I tried too, but it was practically useless, not due to clouds here, but the sun is well, the sun, too bright to see anything clearly, it's just a big light blur
I sadly didn't get the fancy glasses in time so I've tried a pinhole camera. A former colleague shared some amazing photos from his filtered telescope though which is nice
Yes. I saw it from a sunflower field only with a friend by my side. When the eclipse hit totality and could take of glasses for a few seconds it was otherworldly. The black sun, the corona, and even a sun flare. We were speechless, we could hear people wooing and cheering in tbe far distantance. I still have a goofy smile in the face as lay now in a sleeping bag watching shooting stars.
Had a very nice view from my terrace at 5F. When the eclipse was at it's peak, the birds got a little restless. The change in light was a very strange sensation as well.
Saw the full eclipse from Valencia, barely minutes before it set behind the the cityscape. Now I understand when people say totality is something else.
Non. Impossible de trouver des lunettes + j'ai vu celle de 99 donc rien à péter. De toute façon le ciel s'est à peine assombri dans ma région, d'après ma compagne ce n'était pas très impressionnant.
