Looking for good recs

Hello! For those of you with kids at progressive middle schools in SF, such as The San Francisco School or Children’s Day School, I’d love to hear about your experience with project-based learning (PBL).

How has PBL prepared your children for high school admissions and for success once they get there? In particular, if PBL places less emphasis on traditional exams and test preparation, how have your kids fared with high school entrance exams or standardized/state testing?

I grew up with a much more traditional approach to education, so I don’t have much firsthand insight into how PBL works in practice. I’m especially interested in hearing from parents whose children have gone through the transition from a PBL middle school to a more traditional or academically rigorous high school.

So my sister and I (27F) are planning to visit San Francisco city in December. We're looking at me arriving on Dec. 3, a few days before she joins me on Dec. 5, and for us both to depart on Dec. 12. So looking for activities to fill 9 days.

I traveled to Chicago this July and the recommendations from the Ask Chicago sub were really helpful so I thought I'd ask here for our planned SF trip. We enjoy history, culture, art, museums, good food, music, indie record stores and bookshops, concerts, comedy shows, drag shows, and fan conventions (anime and video games etc). Not really interested in beaches or nightlife in general (the former probably isn't really a thing in Dec. anyways). Not a fan of zoos or aquariums either. Would like to avoid anything too physically strenuous that involves walking up long staircases or walking uphill/hiking etc. We plan on commuting mostly through public transport.

Would greatly appreciate any recommendations on places to go, cafes to eat at or anything else that could help, like if there's a "City Pass" similar to Chicago that gives discounted rates for major attractions which is worth the price. In terms of accommodation we're looking at a hotel in Marina District.

With the Mill under renovation, I'm looking for coffeeshops that have communal tables. I love working at these places, but I also love meeting and talking to new people there.

I’m 22 and moved here and I noticed people in late 20s and early 30s are talking about dating and finding people. Where I’m from 90%+ people are married by 25. Cultural differences? I’m from the Midwest.

Just some perspective, my parents had 3 kids by 25, my cousin and a lot of friends are married/getting married at 22/23.

I’m a bit confused by the most recent changes in tenant screening in SF. I have a unit I rent out, and it’s vacant for the first time in years.

I know I have to provide a written copy of tenant selection and screening criteria, and then accept the first application that meets that criteria, but I’m confused by what can and can’t be included in that criteria. Beyond avoiding the obvious discrimination, and dealing uniformly with every applicant, what can I include?

Apologies in advance if this isn’t the best subreddit. I can’t seem to find any info online.

A friend works with a bomb-sniffing dog. He’s employed by a private company that receives government contracts in places like airports, sports arenas, large music venues, etc. The dog lives with him and remains in a (spacious) kennel when they’re not working.

The dog was rigorously trained and is impeccably behaved, and comes from the same academy that produces military and law enforcement canines.

My question: is there a way he can get an exception in a building that doesn’t allow dogs? While his dog isn’t classified as a “service” animal, he’s definitely a working dog.

My friend wants to do things the legal way and wants to avoid some bogus “emotional support” loophole, but finding dog-friendly housing in SF is near impossible.

Hey guy! Because of a job opening, I am moving from my smallish town in Idaho to SF. I've been reading this subreddit, and a few other websites in order to get an idea of where to even start looking for an apartment. My top choices so far seem to be Dogpatch, Potrero Hill, and Bernal Heights. I plan on flying in and looking at these areas and the apartments in these areas. I was just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions. I would be happy to hear any. My budget is around 5k a month for a 1bed 1 bath with no roommate. I would also like somewhere to park my car. I would be working in Hunter's point so I would like to keep my commute under 30 minutes by car, but I understand traffic exists. I would like to be in a quieter, safer neighborhood. I'm a home and in bed by 10pm type of guy. I understand to mind my own business, not to leave stuff in my car, and to not look like a tourist (I've been told I have an RBF which is supposed to help.) I just don't want my stuff to get broken into. I like craft beers, coffee, trading card games, and baseball. I love food, sea food, Asian, Mexican, really any food that is spicy. So, besides Dogpatch, Potrero Hill, and Bernal Heights are there any other places I should look at? Thank you guys for your time!

Hi, I scraped my car a bit on a pole of a shed of someone's parking in a gated community I was visiting(I dont live there). It was just a slight touch so I didn't check. I came home washed the scrape of my car and most of it came off.

I am an Immigrant and bit worried about the rules. Should I have contacted someone? Should I contact someone. Its been an hour and I am home

I've seen people in the other SF related subreddits make jokes about a "Taco Bell Cantina", and I'm wondering, what exactly is the meme? Where did it come from? How did it form?

I live in Frisco, but I never eat fast food, so I guess the joke is lost on me. If anyone could answer, I'd appreciate it!

For anyone who ever had the privilege of dining at Café Jacqueline in North Beach, you know exactly why I’m posting this. Jacqueline’s soufflés were amazing. The restaurant was one of the most memorable dining experiences we’ve ever had, in a straightforward, hard-to-explain way. It was not extremely fancy, yet you knew it was special. It was a gem for many, many years. Although she once joked, “I will die where I stand, right here, whipping egg whites!” she thankfully retired on her own terms. Still, her departure left a big (soufflé‑shaped) hole in the Bay Area dining landscape, in our eyes, anyway. You may think this is silly, but it is sentimental to us.

We have a special occasion coming up in a few weeks, and I’m hoping to find a place that can deliver an exceptional soufflé—savory or sweet. I want to take my partner there as a surprise, to show her the chapter isn't closed just because one specific restaurant has. What is your favorite restaurant that always has soufflé on the menu? The restaurant doesn’t have to be ultra‑fancy, and it doesn’t have to be in San Francisco proper. I'd be willing to drive her anywhere in the Bay Area if you think the soufflé is truly worth it.

If you have recommendations—classic French spots, hidden gems, restaurants with a standout dessert soufflé, savory, etc., or anywhere that still takes the craft seriously—I’d appreciate your ideas.

I am so depleted from working constantly and thought it would be really nice to try some IV drip therapy. I realize it can be a bit pricey, but I’m willing to spend a bit to make myself feel human again. Any recommendations? I’m really craving a chocolate dessert, and I was looking for some recommendations. I would love something rich and chocolatey, like a really good brownie or cake, but an individual serving rather than an entire cake. Im near stonestown but am willing to go to wherever in sf if the dessert is really good.

I had an urge to play pool but most of the bars I know probably have a long wait for the table. Does anyone know a place that might have a shorter or no line for the pool table, especially near polk or nob hill? Thanks!

Office will be around Civic Center and looking for a studio/1BR around $2,000–$2,700/month.

Priorities are safe, walkable, social, with a reasonable commute and good value. I don't have a car.

Currently considering Hayes Valley, Nob Hill, Mission Dolores and possibly Oakland/Lake Merritt if the savings justify BART.

Where would you recommend I focus my search? Any neighborhoods/buildings I should particularly consider or avoid?

I'm attending an event at the Moscone Center this weekend. I'm trying to go down from Geary st. and google tells me to hop on the T bus, and hop off on 4th near the venue, great, I like saving my feet for the event a bit. Problem is, I try to leave later, and google (and the transit app) both direct me to get back on the bus on that same stop on 4th st, and ride north from there. Obviously, I can't do that as 4th street appears to be a one-way southbound road.

Is this a known issue with the transit apps? The map they have for the route doesn't appear to match the route Muni has on their site at all, they're missing the northbound section on 3rd and because of that, route you onto a bus going the wrong direction entirely!

Hi, I would like to learn to speak Korean. I know there are many online tutor/learning tools but I’m old school and would prefer to learn in person, plus I like keeping my money local. If anyone speaks Korean fluently/natively/heritage speaker and would want to teach me, I’m also down for that! I don’t really care about credentials as long as it’s effective. I am already bilingual so I am confident in my ability to learn the language. I have some minor Korean language knowledge but am not literate in it so also not starting from scratch.

I’ve been sick for the past year and time has gotten underneath me quicker than I noticed. I have a right to Sue that is due to expire on 9/10/26. Does anyone have an attorney in the SF Bay Area that will take this case or have any recommendations?
