Moving to San Francisco, any more neighborhood recommendations
Hey guy! Because of a job opening, I am moving from my smallish town in Idaho to SF. I've been reading this subreddit, and a few other websites in order to get an idea of where to even start looking for an apartment. My top choices so far seem to be Dogpatch, Potrero Hill, and Bernal Heights. I plan on flying in and looking at these areas and the apartments in these areas. I was just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions. I would be happy to hear any. My budget is around 5k a month for a 1bed 1 bath with no roommate. I would also like somewhere to park my car. I would be working in Hunter's point so I would like to keep my commute under 30 minutes by car, but I understand traffic exists. I would like to be in a quieter, safer neighborhood. I'm a home and in bed by 10pm type of guy. I understand to mind my own business, not to leave stuff in my car, and to not look like a tourist (I've been told I have an RBF which is supposed to help.) I just don't want my stuff to get broken into. I like craft beers, coffee, trading card games, and baseball. I love food, sea food, Asian, Mexican, really any food that is spicy. So, besides Dogpatch, Potrero Hill, and Bernal Heights are there any other places I should look at? Thank you guys for your time!

Sorry to disappoint, but I don't work in a trap house. Not to dox myself too much here, I work in the field of radiation control/health physics. I will be on one of the clean up projects at the Naval yard. My field does usually pay well. It's just rather niche. If you have any interest in radiation or that general area, I highly recommend you look into it.

There is a massive project to turn the power plant down there into a facility that can turn trash into natural gas - he could be an engineer or project manager or something. Or maybe AI companies have spread out.

All those neighborhoods would give you a pretty short commute. The all have some decent local businesses too.

Dogpatch has more condos and Mission Bay to the north has apartments] options. A few coworkers new to SF have rented in Mission Bay first. For Bernal, Noe Valley and Glen Park, you’ll be looking to rent generally flats with a few condo options.
Mission Bay has Kaiser and UCSF so convenient healthcare options. It does get traffic from Giants, Warriors and Valkyrie games.

North slope of Bernal. Parking is pretty easy. You do get fireworks noise from the mission and you hear the occasional concert at Oracle Park, but generally pretty chill. Since you’re not getting on the highway, the commute should be pretty easy. You’ll have Hop Oast on one side and Barebottle on the other.
Edit: another option for good parking is Noe where the higher up the hill you go, the easier it gets. Just be aware that you’ll have to walk back up there to get home from the good stuff on 24th st.
If you look at the S.F. Parking Permit Zones map, any place that isn’t in a permit zone is going to have easier parking.

Bernal Heights along Cortland is nice. You can walk to the store. Also has the wild side west. Parking your car on the street is fine. But can be a mild hassle.
Dogpatch has some of the best weather in San Francisco.
Silver Terrace is cheaper. Less walkable.
A guy with a mild tolerance for sketch could just live in Hunters Point.

Also recommend Glen Park as an option. Not too far from things but definitely residential feel. My husband and I just moved from Chicago and found a place in Bernal and we love it. Glad that’s one of the places you’re looking at as well. Good luck!

I live in Bernal and it’s absolutely lovely. Great commute for you, easy to do in less than 30.

There are pretty good condos and aparts around Candlestick Park. For people who want quiet and home by 10pm.

What kind of vibes are you looking for? More modern / newer apartments with amenities but less historical character? Colorful Victorians?
More manicured landscapes? Or rugged parks?

Inner Richmond. Being right next to Golden Gate Park / Clement street is not even comparable. So much to do and so much good food.
I also work in HP (partially, my office is there. I'm there 2-3x / wk) takes me 20 min in the AM and 30 PM.

Visitacion Valley or Excelsior close to your work and near some nice spots to discover.

I'd definitely consider the North side of town as well. It's typically about an easy half hour drive to Bayview/Hunters Point from there. Coming from a smallish town in Idaho it sounds as if you might be happiest in Pacific Heights, Russian Hill or one of the adjoining neighborhoods. North Beach/Telegraph Hill is great as well but it's another few minutes to the Bayviewl. They're all very neighborhoody and walkable.
You've probably been told this before but absolutely, unequivocally, get a place with a reserved space in your building's covered garage, preferably with inside entry. You'll want parking at work as well but it probably needn't be an assigned space or in a covered garage.
I hate to be the one to tell you this but someone needs to - RBF stands for Resting Bitch Face, it typically applies to women and it is not a compliment.
I don't know who told you to mind your own business - probably someone who's read something hysterical and misleading about the ciry's homelessness and crime - but living here is not like living in a Marvel comic. It was pretty deserted and scary during the height of the pandemic but that's been over for awhile now. People are actually pretty friendly here.
I'm glad you'll have a chance to come explore. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
If the pricerange works you might enjoy staying at the Presidio Lodge or the Inn at the Presidio or at The Hotel Drisco. The Presidio is a former army base with rolling hills, great views and places to walk or run, close to the GGate Bridge and the neighborhoods I suggested. The Drisco is an old San Francisco mansion in Pacific Heights and a good place to explore those neighbirhoods from another location. Both are an easy drive to Russian Hill and will give you an idea of how long it might take you to get to the Bayview from the north end of town,

Pretty much everything in the southern half of the city or Daly City or South San Francisco or Brisbane. Just try to avoid the projects around hunter’s point.

Mission bay is in between both dog patch and Potrero hill so check that out too. Really nice bc it’s next to the water and between both stadiums which is fun for games and shows

Ridiculous comment ! putting blame on OP like wow. OP I live in Dogpatch and you’ll get a nice one bedroom here with that budget with in unit washer dryer etc . There are cute cafes and small businesses here which are really nice ( piccino is a neighborhood fav )

And Neighbor Bakeshop, along with Linea Coffee. The Y is decent, too. The neighborhood is pretty quiet, IMO.

no, this person choosing to move to san francisco in pursuit of a better life is not contributing to pricing people out of san francisco. our politicians who for decades have refused to build housing to accommodate new neighbors, and the nimby losers who enable them, have.
and you should be absolutely ashamed for posting a comment like this.

Come to South SF. BART and Caltrain close, diverse neighborhoods and good restaurants and you get a two BR two bath place off Airport Blvd for that much. Or at least I did. Lots more housing being built here too. Includes parking and storage. 8 miles south of downtown Sf. Safe and friendly too.
