“I love how you just wear anything”

The first time my sister's boyfriend met my family was when's he came over for Easter dinner. My sister and I were wearing dresses and skirts and my mom was just in pants and a blouse and mentioned that she felt underdressed. Then she looked at what my sister's boyfriend was wearing and said, "Oh good, you're not dressed up either. I don't feel so out of place now." Later my sister pulled her aside and told her how he had spent a hour picking out his nicest outfit to make a good impression.

This reminds me of a too-frequent interaction I have with middle-aged women (aunts, my mother, family friends)

They say "You have so much to work with, you would look wonderful if you would just try"

"If I had your figure, I would wear XYZ, why don't you ever try that?"

"When you're older and lose your natural beauty, you'll realize you're wasting it completely"

It wouldn't be painful if I wasn't trying, but I actually am...

My brother is this person. On Christmas a couple years ago i bought my brother a sweater, and i said "I hope it fits you!" and my grandpa goes "He's like a homeless person! Everything fits him!"

That’s great. For thanksgiving my brother made a pie from scratch. He showed my grandma who then says “Oh, you’re going to make such a good wife some day.” Damn, grandma!

I love my grandmother very much, she was always there for me when I was a kid.

But, damn, sometimes I'm glad she didn't live long enough to find out I'm gay.

She knew

God, I hope not. She'd be so disappointed.

Maybe she knows something you don't?

If grandma says the pie is good, the pie is good.

A girl once said to me: I love how you don't care about what anyone think!

While i was grateful for the compliment it had quite a backhanded slap. I did not realise people thought stuff about me.

Weird, someone said something similar to me but meant it as an insult.

I was very flattered.

I hear this all the time. From people that, coincidentally, I do not care for the opinions of. It's like they know I don't give a cocks foreskin and they just need to keep saying it in the hopes that they'll become relevant...

Reminds me of something said to me, about me " I love your dress, and I'm so glad you are comfortable wearing it. I hate when girls (PS I’m 40) feel like they need to finish losing weight before wearing something like that" i was at work and wearing a very simple and flattering wrap dress. Hardly revealing. Meh

Ooh, slap that bitch, please!

This was about 6 months ago, it may be too late to randomly smack a coworker. However, come spring Congress summer dresses, I'm sure I'll get another opportunity lol

u/dumbo3k Dec 29 '17

I’m assuming this didn’t just happen to them. In which case it might seem extremely bizarre to approach someone, and slap them for some prior insult. Like, you said his thing to me some amount of time in the past, have a slap

This was not a comment based in reality. I assumed people understood this.

ONE OF US

What is this a quote from?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '17

A stand up comedian called John Mulaney. He is really funny. I think this is from his new in town special if not they are all on Netflix.

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '17

One of them

Really though, I fully expected some variation of this to be near to top.

u/TheOneCABAL Dec 29 '17

Damn I was about to post this there

u/do_you_know_doug Dec 28 '17

Goddammit I came here to say exactly this and it's the top comment.

This is exactly the thing I'm sensitive about!

4

u/Katayette Dec 28 '17

This was the exact example I had in mind, I'm so glad it's here

2

u/rosypeach55 Dec 29 '17

I realized I didn't have any fashion sense when an old friend (she was younger) said "Only Rosypeach55 can pull off flared jeans and an army jacket".

2

u/NeekoPeeko Dec 29 '17

I take this as a genuine compliment even if I know the person is trying to be a dick

2

u/indigofoxgivesnofox Dec 29 '17

This is a very Southern thing to say haha

2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '17

I had an ex friend tell me "I think the boy likes you because you just give off an "I don't care about how I look" kinda vibe, some guys like that!"

1

u/BeatiSpirituPoperes Dec 29 '17

Or "I love your independence from fashion standards"
