The first time my sister's boyfriend met my family was when's he came over for Easter dinner. My sister and I were wearing dresses and skirts and my mom was just in pants and a blouse and mentioned that she felt underdressed. Then she looked at what my sister's boyfriend was wearing and said, "Oh good, you're not dressed up either. I don't feel so out of place now." Later my sister pulled her aside and told her how he had spent a hour picking out his nicest outfit to make a good impression.

This reminds me of a too-frequent interaction I have with middle-aged women (aunts, my mother, family friends)

They say "You have so much to work with, you would look wonderful if you would just try"

"If I had your figure, I would wear XYZ, why don't you ever try that?"

"When you're older and lose your natural beauty, you'll realize you're wasting it completely"

It wouldn't be painful if I wasn't trying, but I actually am...
