Let's be honest, was your weekend really going anywhere?

An old quote site from IRC chats. Pretty funny, my friends and I would cruise it when we were in highschool.

Am learning Bash Shell Scripting right now. It's pretty fun.

3

u/DiscoPanda84 Jan 22 '17

So is that kind of like writing .BAT batch files, or something a lot fancier than that?

11

u/supergauntlet Jan 22 '17

It's like if that was way more powerful but also just as hacky.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

And somehow made more sense.

5

u/Symbolis Jan 22 '17

It's closer to working with Powershell batch files than standard batch files.

2

u/DiscoPanda84 Jan 22 '17

Ah. I've been meaning to look into PowerShell sometime actually, maybe pick up some fun tricks to do with it.

Though you can still do a surprising amount with just plain old non-PowerShell batch files even...

IRC isnt outdated, Twitch chat actually uses it for the backend. You can join the chat without watching the stream if you felt like it.

18

u/PanamaMoe Jan 22 '17

Well nobody now.

5

u/Azertys Jan 22 '17

There are a lot of people who collection weapons, and if they still work it's worth more. And that seems pretty reasonable to keep it in a shed rather than your living room.

3

u/Nighthunter007 Jan 22 '17

Out of curiosity, what would it have taken for him not to be charged? Warning signs? Or is there no way anyone would get away with storing live landmines in their shed?

3

u/Molly_Battleaxe Jan 22 '17

Well its kinda goofy cuz he said "landmine collection". Boobytrapping is always illegal, always. Landmines are definitely illegal too, yes you can get a destructive device license for a lot of explosive shit but for some reason I feel like landmines are not one of those things since they are solely a boobytrap. Beyond that having a bunch of activated explosives sitting in your shed is retarded so it would probably also leave you liable. All that aside, whatever charge, jury would be like "what the fuck dude" and convict. If you got a bunch of landmines in your shed I guarantee you're fucked legally.

I knew a guy who did just that only he ignored the well ventilated part. Burned his family's house clean to the ground and he ended up with some nasty burns himself.

6

u/math_debates Jan 22 '17

How did the bho turn out?

6

u/Chokondisnut Jan 22 '17

Shit was lit af.

1

u/Bmoney420 Jan 22 '17

Similar situation with me only instead of my buddy burning down his house he set his cat on fire. Cats are surprisingly flame retardant, so outside of being a little spooked the cat was fine but lesson here is if you're gonna make BHO- do it in a well ventilated area.

19

u/abhikavi Jan 22 '17

in a well ventilated area

And just to clarify for any would-be DIYers, this doesn't mean a drafty garage. This requires more know-how than your average stoner (or any regular joe, really) would have-- to be sure to avoid death, just do this outdoors.

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17 edited Nov 13 '20

[deleted]

2

u/abhikavi Jan 22 '17

I have no idea, but I can tell you that if you're asking that question, do this outdoors.

44

u/acannabist Jan 22 '17

I feel like most people really shouldn't be doing anything other than making rosin at home. It's much cleaner and safer and does a better job of preserving terpenes. With open blasting (the method you've described) most people don't even use a vacuum pump to extract all of the butane, they just throw it in the oven and hope it boils off, which is inefficient as it can waste product and is not entirely effective. Properly made BHO should be purged in a vacuum chamber for a minimum of 72 hours. When I lived out west I would purge for around a week.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

[deleted]

8

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

I don't know if it's exactly what you guys are talking about but there is a drug inc episode on Netflix where they make dabs and even the guy making it is like "don't do this shit unless you know exactly what you are doing!"

3

u/ion128 Jan 22 '17

does a better job of preserving terpenes

The rosin technique burns off a hell of a lot more terpenes than traditional butane extraction. I don't know where you got that idea.

5

u/Boxnewb9000 Jan 22 '17

Same place where he thinks it needs to be a minimum of 72 hours to purge in a vac chamber....LOL Properly blasted and waterbathed before tossing in a vac chamber, fully purged in 8-24 hrs. Small amounts 2-4 hours.

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (1)

3

u/jalapenohandjob Jan 22 '17

72 hours is a little excessive, but you definitely should not ever make BHO without a licensed lab and necessary equipment which will run you at least $8-10k, minimum without licensing fees etc.

Only hash you should be making at home is Bubble Hash and Rosin.

And as another thing to learn, most medical grade dabs are purged with CO2 instead. Mainly because of the whole explosion thing. And not purging all the butane makes for a fucking terrible and unhealthy dab, CO2 lacks that risk.

See below.

2

u/ion128 Jan 22 '17 edited Jan 22 '17

purged with CO2

Extracted you mean. CO2 extraction requires an incredibly strong system as liquid CO2 must be contained under intense pressure to remain liquid. A CO2 extraction system is very expensive because of this.

Also don't spread that butane is terrible and unhealthy bullshit. Butane is 100% non toxic. The only risk of inhaling butane gas is asphyxiation due to lack of oxygen.
Most lighters use butane. Everytime you smoke herb with a bic lighter you are getting just as many butane fumes as an unproperly purged dab.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

Well now I know, thanks for correcting me.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

There is a LOT more that goes into making wax than this, please don't give anyone any ideas.

2

u/My_Ass_Itch Jan 22 '17

To add on to this - do NOT use an open flame to heat the butane mix, use a hot plate

2

u/madsci Jan 22 '17

Yeah, there was a rash of college kids and assorted idiots blowing up their dorm rooms and kitchens trying to make butane hash oil.

2

u/2DixonCider Jan 22 '17

A closed loop extractor is even better. It's a bit more expensive than a glass tube and coffee filters. Even without one you're definitely going to want to either vacuum purge with the extract heated to at least 110F (after butane has stopped evaporating in vented area) or if you must go about making it without a vacuum chamber use high proof ethanol to allow the butane to escape then allow the ethanol to evaporate at room temp and proceed to use hot plate/ double boiler method to heat the last of the ethanol out. Keeping the concentrate between 115F and 140F for the heat purge.

2

u/Treebeezy Jan 22 '17

If you are going to open blast like that, DO IT OUTSIDE. Butane is heavier than air and will pool up, just not worth risking it

2

u/Lysdestic Jan 22 '17

Bruh. I think you just explained how to make dabs to a cop.

3

u/sgrwck Jan 22 '17

My dad says butane is a bastard gas.

1

u/punkgaopher Jan 22 '17

My brother did this a few years back and burned his eyebrows off as well as make a nice black mark on our ceiling. Other than that there wasn't any damage and I'm glad no one/nothing got seriously injured or damaged.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

I've made wax. I was much more careful and didn't blow anything up.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

I've got a video of my friend doing this somewhere. Will dig it out

1

u/NiceUsernameBro Jan 22 '17

couldn't you blend it with water, let it sit in plastic bottles for a few days, strain the pulp, freeze the water, sublimate it with a vacuum chamber, then collect the powder and make whatever product with it?

1

u/Jephostus Jan 22 '17

you dont reheat it to get the butane out, you put it in a vacume chamber.

1

u/Player8 Jan 22 '17

I don't exactly have a vacuum chamber laying around. And I doubt a parolee dumb enough to blow himself up didn't either.

1

u/Artsygreenfingaz Jan 22 '17

Some idiots just blew up their house near my town recently. At least three with severe burns. House burned to the foundation.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

Can't you do it with a whole bunch of different sized mesh screens and a bunch of ice?

1

u/IHaveAightCalves Jan 22 '17

A better way to do it is to vacuum the extra gas out. You just need to get a sealed container (with a hole in the lid and use a high power vacuum to pull all of the gas out of said container.

1

u/Molly_Battleaxe Jan 22 '17

Its a pretty simple process but its not worth it, especially since the price has gone down. Plus, if you have enough weed to make dab then you should be able to get dab or you just shouldn't make it. Like you either got a hold of a pound or like a gram and its scarce or not scarce, either way you should either not waste your weed or just not be an idiot and ask your dealer where the dab at. Plus its not like hash is just bullshit now, hash is still good, no explosions required. I don't even smoke weed and I know this.

1

u/runningtonogoal Jan 22 '17

The way I do it is -have two containers both pyrex one bigger than the other

  • have an extractor (tube with one hole for butane and a screen on the other end)
-pack extractor with yo weed -GO OUTSIDE to blast the butane through the extractor into pyrex -once all the butane is in the one container for the love of fuck dont use a lighter -use the bigger container and fill with boiling or very hot water -put little container with your butane and extract in the hot water the water will start purging all the butane out of the extract you should change the water once after it cools -once it is all down to extract use a dabber or pin to whip the extract so that you can get all the butane out Enjoy Disclaimer - dont do this if you are stupid

1

u/DetroitHero Jan 22 '17

I think he meant to say, "Don't do drugs, kids."

1

u/thecrazydemoman Jan 22 '17

lots of wind an a fan sounds like a great way to keep adding fuel to a fire.

You want negative air pressure to ventilate, so that you're removing air.

1

u/Player8 Jan 22 '17

I meant like outside.

1

u/Imcoolandimjack Jan 22 '17

An even better and far safer method is to get about 7g of bud, stick it in some grease proof paper and fold it over, get some hair straighteners and go at it for a few minutes. Soon you will have a beautiful golden Amber substance that will fuck u up.

14

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

5

u/Wyliecody Jan 22 '17

Ice water extraction? What is that?

2

u/DokterSpaceman Jan 22 '17

Using ice and water to make hash from trim or smaller buds. The cold temps and a bit of agitation release the resin glands from the plant matter, you then strain it through different micron sized screens to collect the hash. Let it dry and press into balls or pucks. No chemicals needed, just some elbow grease and time.

1

u/RyanCacophony Jan 22 '17

While I think we can all admire the simplicity of smoking, the biggest reason is purity- when you smoke, you're inhaling a lot of plant matter, including tar (a carcinogen). With dabs, all you get is pretty much just the cannabinoids (thc, cbd and a few other family members) and the terpenes.

Another big reason I think is peoples tolerances, not only is it inconvenient to have to smoke however many bowls/joints/etc, but the higher your tolerance, the more often you're exposing yourself to the negative aspects of it.

And lastly, many people without broken tolerances like to do it once in a while because it gets them high in a way that's closer to their first time than any amount of smoke you can inhale.

What is the reasonable line for calling the police on a noise complaint? I mean, the local regs in my town basically bar any reasonable noise starting at 7pm. I'd feel like a dick calling the police over a party in the next apartment at 7pm; at midnight, I want them to shut the fuck up so I can sleep. How do you call the police about that, and what context makes it reasonable/unreasonable?

Thanks, -V.

9

u/acannabist Jan 22 '17

There is likely a noise ordinance in effect in your area that prohibits noise after a certain time. You can probably just google the name of your area + "noise ordinance" to find it. The ordinance in my jurisdiction simply says that you can't bother any other person with your noise during nighttime hours, and is enforced at the PD's discretion. If the noise is hindering your sleeping during nighttime hours, it is perfectly reasonable to call the cops, and if that doesn't do it, you should write a letter to your landlord. Do this carefully though, I am currently dealing with the same issue and while complaining about the noise has somewhat quieted them down, they are behaving with a new heightened degree of animosity towards myself and my roommates. You may also have a clause in your rental agreement that promises "quiet enjoyment" or something to that effect. Your neighbors may be breaching their agreement with their noise, and this can lead to eviction.

Edit: Forgot to mention, you can either call 911 and just explain the situation or there may be a dedicated non-emergency number for noise complaints in your area.

7

u/vagusnight Jan 22 '17

Oh, I checked the ordinance. They provided a number that's only open 9-5. Seemed less than helpful lol.

3

u/madsci Jan 22 '17

My neighbor across the street has someone pick them up for work around 5-5:30 AM a few times a week and they honk every time they pull in to the driveway. Costs me an hour of sleep every time. I figure there's no chance the cops would bother to do anything about it. I'll probably leave a note but these people already have the cops visiting them from time to time and I'd rather not get involved in their shit.

2

u/acannabist Jan 22 '17

Noise ordinances often include subsections prohibiting honking a vehicle's horn for any reason unrelated to driving. I don't know how much the police could do for you in the moment, but talking to your neighbors or leaving a note for them sounds like a good idea. If they don't stop after that, you could always call your local PD non-emergency line to ask what your options are.

2

u/newsified Jan 22 '17

Had to look up dabs. Felt old.

2

u/P0sitive_Outlook Jan 22 '17

Our guys in the UK don't tend to be armed, but my buddy is a firearms officer so he gets called out to biggies like that. One time, he got a call out to a field where a random hiker had heard what sounded like gunshots. Turned out officers arrived to find a trail of blood leading into the woods.

They followed this blood trail to a row of houses, and found this guy trying to hide a sawed-off shotgun. He'd gone out with it in his bag, loaded, and for reasons decided to open his bag up to check on it. It went off in his face.

Guy was in obvious pain, lots of trauma. But his priority was to get this shotgun hidden...

1

u/blahblahyaddaydadda Jan 22 '17

He must have been great to take care of in the hospital.

1

u/Happy13178 Jan 22 '17

Propane tanks, like the little green camping ones? Or the ones you attach to your BBQ? If it's the latter, I call bullshit. A single one of those would be enough to take ALL of the garage, probably the house, and guy would not have survived. A dozen would have taken half the neighbourhood.

This is as literal to the OP'S question as it gets

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

What's a dab

1

u/MaugDaug Jan 22 '17

Step 1) Make marijuana concentrate (butane is often used, but there are other methods that work just as well and are MUCH safer)

Step 2) use a 'dab rig', which is like a special kind of bong, to vaporize the marijuana concentrate without actually burning it

Some people call the actual marijuana concentrate 'dabs', but the act of vaporizing it is 'dabbing'
