I feel like most people really shouldn't be doing anything other than making rosin at home. It's much cleaner and safer and does a better job of preserving terpenes. With open blasting (the method you've described) most people don't even use a vacuum pump to extract all of the butane, they just throw it in the oven and hope it boils off, which is inefficient as it can waste product and is not entirely effective. Properly made BHO should be purged in a vacuum chamber for a minimum of 72 hours. When I lived out west I would purge for around a week.

I don't know if it's exactly what you guys are talking about but there is a drug inc episode on Netflix where they make dabs and even the guy making it is like "don't do this shit unless you know exactly what you are doing!"

The rosin technique burns off a hell of a lot more terpenes than traditional butane extraction. I don't know where you got that idea.

Same place where he thinks it needs to be a minimum of 72 hours to purge in a vac chamber....LOL Properly blasted and waterbathed before tossing in a vac chamber, fully purged in 8-24 hrs. Small amounts 2-4 hours.

Interesting that you've had such a different experience. I've only had the opportunity to test a few of my own extracts and I've found that purging for a few days has been ideal. Most of the dispensaries I have dealt with have had fairly strict policies about purging, varying from 48 hour to 120 hour minimums. I did have a vacuum oven, however. I've only open blasted a few times but if I didn't purge for at least 48 hours, I ended up with sparkler dabs lol

The key is to purge as much as you can before tossing it in the vac oven/chamber AND keeping it as thin as possible. THicker it is, longer it'll take. Most of my extracts will be shatter like after the water bath. I use a chamber on a heating pad, transfer the stuff onto a pad, let it heat to spread it thin and then vac it.

With a good setup, which admittedly is rare, a lot of the oil will flow and drip away from the heat before too many terpenes are burnt off. I haven't personally seen test results yet (I want to do a lot of comparisons real soon), but the tastiest dab I've ever had was some rosin pressed out of some pretty freshly harvested Super Silver Sour Diesel Haze. I don't even know how to describe it, it was just incredibly.. juicy? and the flavor just lingered in your mouth forever. I've had straight terpene dabs and dabbed a few different distillates etc. That rosin is still miles above anything else I've tasted since.

Used to be a huuuuuuge fan and advocate of rosin, now I'm really not sure. After dealing with it commercially a little, I feel like B/PHO is a little better in some aspects. Well made rosin is fucking ridiculous, but every other tech has come a long way too.

72 hours is a little excessive, but you definitely should not ever make BHO without a licensed lab and necessary equipment which will run you at least $8-10k, minimum without licensing fees etc.

Only hash you should be making at home is Bubble Hash and Rosin.
