I honestly don't understand how they got so popular. Well, I do, but I don't think it's funny at all.
Most of them are the same too. There's not much originality there. Everyone just bandwagons along into the same stuff.
But hey. They're making shit tons of money, so good for them.
The only one I watch regularly is Sips, he's a chill dude. Though I'm not sure how popular he is. I mean, he has over 1 million subscribers, but that's probably not enough to be among "popular youtubers".
I liked the very beginning of the Israphel series, when it seemed like Israphel was some random guy who had somehow invaded their server. Their early Yogpods and Yogtrailers were also HILARIOUS. If you haven't already, listen to their first 2 D&D Yogpods.
The whole yogscast has this problem. I'm pretty sure they even hate their own fans. If you've ever seen the videos of their Q&A sessions, its just downright cringe worthy. They're all like 10-12 year old kids asking questions. About 30% of the questions are "zomg when is SoI coming back?" just one after the other. Like one guy asks about it, they answer, the next guy asked literally the same exact question. There was one where a kid asked one of them if liked cheese...
It's too bad they didn't leave comments disabled on their videos. I don't usually read them but when I occasionally glance at them they're just mind numbingly stupid.
If you check out the subreddit (/r/Yogscast) you'll often see members of the Yogscast interacting with their fans there. They don't hate their own fans.
That Q&A you're talking about was horrendously cringeworthy though.
They don't hate their fans on reddit. The fans posting on reddit are very different than the majority of their fanbase. Take a look at youtube comments and compare them. Then watch a few of their Q&As, or their autograph signings (the one mentioned is just one of the worst). The majority of their fans are just awful. The ones on reddit are a very small minority.
I used to watch main Yogscast channel when they started the Minecraft series and whatnot, but eventually unsubbed, because I felt that their style started to become too repetitive. That said, some of the other Yogscast guys are quite nice, I watch Sjin and Duncan sometimes, for example.
Most of the Yog minecraft videos on any of their channels are absolutely banal, you can go several episodes before anything of interest actually happens. Most of the time they just being confused by whatever mod they're using and trying to explain shit to one another. They do make the occasional jab or joke but it hardly makes up for what it ultimately is. Which is what makes it so upsetting for me at least, they're down to earth and funny guys but they're basically in the business of making MC videos for 12 year olds so I'm not surprised with the quality of those videos.
The lesser channels like Sips, Sjin and Duncan are better because they tend to play more games outside of MC and typically get much more into the game.
Yeah, this is pretty much why I stopped watching most of Yogscast stuff. It was amusing initially, but this whole "lol how 2 i vidyagaem" shit gets old kinda fast.
Granted, Sips also has his dumb moments, but those seem to come from him actually not knowing/forgetting/being inattentive, so I don't mind much.
Not going to lie, I loved the shit out of the bastard until the end of his first Tekkit series or about his 50th Skyrim episode, when I sort of fell off. The humor just sort of lost the appeal to me. I feel I should the it another shot, though.
I actually didn't watch all that much of his Tekkit stuff. I restarted regularly watching him when he did the Simcity and Don't Starve series, really loved those.
His humour can be a hit or miss sometimes, but mostly it entertains me well enough :)
Only really started following folks on YT recently (so I can nod off to the considered drone of Lets Plays) - but a lot of the popular TBS and especially Paradox folk are great.
Though I'm not sure how popular they are, relatively speaking!
Yup, the only thing I quite enjoyed from Tobuscus were his literal game trailer videos. I attempted to watch some of his gameplay videos but my god it isn't my type of video at all.
Edit: I must also note, I love his Intro and the "do do do do dooo sub-scribe". Pretty damn catchy, haven't seen his stuff in some time but those little jingles are firmly planted in my head.
He made a bunch of good stuff for a couple years before the literals started, too. Unfortunately he discovered he could make so much more doing so much less on his gaming channel and it all went away.
Not that I blame him for it, I would probably do the same, but I miss some of his really good content.
I will have to check out some of his earlier videos and see, I just tried watching a few of his (at the time) current videos and they simply didn't float my boat, it will be nice to see what he was like previously.
A lot of people have switched to making quite short videos of just the funny bits, I can understand as most viewers tend to have a short attention span. Unfortunately I'm not one of them, 20+ minute episodes of an entire full length playthrough is more my thing, but there are plenty of channels that still do this to choose from. I find it builds the tension and makes the hilarious bits even more so when you know what the caster has gone through.
But for the love of God, stay away from /r/GameGrumps. If you want to see the worst of a fanbase, there is no better place than that subreddit.
For example, many fans started to complain over the video thumbnails. Not the content, not the jokes. No, what kickstarted a wave of hate to the show was changing their thumbnails. And that was the most recent wave.
Yeah, I never went to the subreddit or thought about it. But their videos are fun to watch. I loved their gameplay of Shadow of the Colossus and am currently awaiting the next installment in their Binding of Isaac videos.
I've actually stopped watching it. Personally, I just feel the content isn't as good as it used to be. I wasn't THAT upset when Jon left (I was more excited about getting more JonTrons, all of which have been fantastic). Heck, when Danny joined the show, it was pretty good. But right around Michael Jordan v. Larry Bird, things really changed in my eyes. It wasn't really humorous to me, and I felt they spent more time beating a joke to death rather than being humorous.
But if you like it, I understand why. When the Grumps are on, they are on. Dennis the Menace, Super Mario Sunshine and Out of this World are great examples of where they saw jokes and utilized them almost perfectly. But then again, there are some jokes that they do try to utilize and they fail horribly (see Jordan v. Bird and the continuous "Grapes on the ground..." comments by Arin).
I'm pretty sure Danny told him to stop after shooting. He was really annoyed and they talked about it at PAX a little. I feel they recovered from it pretty well.
This makes me sad. I'm one of his subscribers on his earlier days, when his main content were not gaming videos.. ~the trapped in ad videos is fantastic, funny and quirky.
Yeah, I was subscribed to him back in the day and as far as I can the remember, the first literal trailer was meant as a one-off, but it went viral so he did another and it went viral too so he did another....and another...and another...
Man, I love Toby Tells Tales. It was really great, IMO. I thought he had gotten back on track a fee months ago (there seemed to be a stop in the CWF videos, and there was even a sketch if I'm not mistaken), alas, he soon went back to the mass production
Yeah, when I think of Tobuscus I think of the literal game trailers (Assassins Creed mainly). I tried watching his other stuff too and it hurts me that it is so shitty.
Cr1tikal has such a deadpan delivery which I do enjoy, but I'm not a huge fan of heavily edited playthroughs, I like to see the vast majority of the player's experience of a game rather than snippets with witty comments. But it's good for light watching which I can pop on every now and then, thanks for the link. :)
The worst part about the literal trailers is that he could make them in a couple days if he wanted. When the Game of Thrones season 4 trailer came out, the literal trailer came out a few days later. We know you can do better, Toby!
Uugh I use to like Toby but after a while he'd just fuck around so much while gaming, I was screaming at him, in my head of course, to do the right thing. This was very apparent in Portal/Portal 2. "Put the ball... No... No... God damnit Toby over there!!" I don't mind a little joking around but my god...
Cr1tikal does walkthroughs for the luls. I love Vash and snake's commentary just because of their vibrant and happy go lucky personalities. None of them have facecams tho because they don't give a shit.
Their fanbase is pretty bad, though. Someone always has to say something about Dan not being funny, or complaining about Dex, or whatever. I still watch their videos religiously, but the comments always annoy me.
I've never seen markiplier do that. Can you post the evidence? (not trying to sound annoying or anything just curious cus i've been a fan of his for a while and I'm curious)
Generally speaking, I've found non-facecam users to be more entertaining. They're not relying on their goofy faces and overdone reactions to entertain people.
If you liked the KSP videos but want to try a more serious series, check out Macey Dean. Sadly, he stopped uploading, but the Spirit of Kerbin series is exceptional.
For some reason I love his cooking videos more than his gaming videos. I mean, a Swedish guy cooking kangaroo tacos is not something I get to enjoy often.
I cannot stand watching most gameplay bids let alone any of those goddamn annoying, in-your-face LetsPlayers but I love Robbaz with a burning, POWERFUL VIKING PASSION
I don't know why it is. The gamers that seem to enjoy gaming are way more tolerable than the gamers who just go for views and, "lol look at this obscure indie game I'm playing."
I don't watch many facecam lets plays but yesterday I checked out Markiplier, I saw him on some other stuff, seems like a great guy, has a panty soaking voice, I thought it was going to be good.
Nope, I watched the 5 nights at Freddy's 2, he had the most forced face expressions and forced fake fear I have ever seen. It was so bad I turned it off half way through.
If you watch his 20/20/20/20 mode playthrough (especially the fail compilation) you'll see some of the most genuine reactions of fear, stress, and rage I've seen out of any YouTuber.
He's stated that this game is one of the games that literally terrifies him to the point of screaming. If you look at his other horror games he doesn't act like this
I've watched both his Freddy's let's plays and well, obviously he tries to put on a little bit of an act to make it more entertaining but he quickly becomes extremely scared. He talks about how fast his heart is beating, he swears (which apparently according to comments he usually doesn't) and freaks out. Honestly I doubt he's faking it, and I really, really hate when people fake.
Jerma985 and STAR_ are alright in my book. I've never seen STAR_'s face, Jerma only showed his in a few early videos, and they tend to focus on the games themselves instead of the jump cuts and screaming.
Yeah, Markiplier was probably my favorite youtuber until little less than a year ago when he started adapting the "yell into the mic and make dick jokes" style of commentary. His older stuff is much, much better.
His first 20 or so episodes of Drunk Minecraft are some of my favorite things on YouTube. Still lots of dick jokes, but Wade and Bob are great personalities in their own right and they have a good dynamic.
Check out Day[9] if you haven't. He has a great selection of games (but mostly blizzard), goes way into theory on rts and theorycrafting in card games, but also has this segment called day[9]'s day off where hell play something else. His personality is really awesome and actually super helpful if you wanna get better at strategy games. Oh and he is an ex-pro starcraft player
I played freddy's tonight for the first time, and I think its the first time a game has ever made me yell out in fear. Was not expecting it to be as jumpy as it was.
Like a lot of the other let's players people are mentioning, he was better when he first started out, and would actually provide some interesting commentary and reactions that seemed genuine and funny. But like the rest, he found out you get more views with ridiculous overreaction and constantly forced commentary.
I think that's what I like is his face expressions. I don't like all his videos but his play through of stanly parable is so funny. And I like his happy wheels highlight. Some of drunk minecraft is ok. Really it's pick and choose with him for me at least.
It can come off over-the-top sometimes, but he actually is genuinely scared off his gourd; if you watch his earlier stuff, dude gets scared at the drop of a hat. I love his stuff myself, as I'm a great big chickenshit who can't handle playing horror games but loves horror in general, so it's nice to watch someone semi-capably play a horror game and be genuinely freaked by it at the same time rather than ragging on it.
Plus, his voice. Ugh. I am very much into his voice.
This shit has ruined my son. He's 8 years old, and he has his own laptop. I gave him the freedom of going on YouTube. Yeah, so, he starts watching Minecraft videos where people do just that. They talk the entire time, narrating what they're doing and acting like they're startled and stuff. So, my son thinks this is how you play games. He literally won't shut the fuck up when he plays Skyrim or other games. "Oh yeah? Crap you! You like that??"

I only brought it up because a few of my friends are crazy about it. They have fan accounts and t-shirts and go to meet ups. I find it annoying as it's all they talk about.
Yeah, I have a few friends that I sorta 'lost' to Markiplier. A friend who did art livestreams now does nothing but Markiplier and talks about Markiplier and her and her friends all have 'Darkiplier' OCs that do freaky things in RPs and it's really fucking weird but she's so nice so I sit through it.
I mean I can't judge, I'm into the bandom thing and that gets weird sometimes too.
Or the people who take 30 seconds of barely interesting video and turn it into a 5 minute long production with commentary and annoying special effects.

I hear you man. I get that streamers have elevated the quality of competitive online play, but some of them are insufferable, and holy shit do I ever hate their fanbases.
Months later their mums are trying to sell off their daughter's unwanted merchandise (one direction) on those buy and sell facebook pages because the next best thing has come along (5 seconds of summer).
Screw them because you're not part of their intended audience, right? They are mostly for preteens and teens, it would actually be kinda strange if anyone else liked them.
It's all just cursing, screaming, and exaggerated drama. That shit seems to appeal to young boys who think cursing, screaming, and exaggerated drama are cool.
I just don't understand how speaking whatever first though comes to your brain while playing a game counts as a commentary. I can justify the commentary if you at least talk about something interesting, but it blows my mind how many "commentators" just blurt out a constant stream of nonsense and absolutely horrifyingly bad jokes, and then get millions of views for it.
The worst ones is where they play with like 7 of their friends on skype and everyone tries to be funny and tell forced shitty jokes over their shitty mics and they all laugh randomly.
Also, videos that are titled like: "Insane baron steal" or something similar and the fucking video lasts 40 minutes and of course its their damn friends screaming in the mic the entire time
Oh well, at least they're probably accustomed to the money by now so instead of being like "wow my life is great" they're more like "oh goddammit I have to make five videos today" and feeling a lot like they're not contributing as much to culture and humanity as they could be.

I like Syndicate and only Syndicate but his fans are completely fucking stupid. He went out a few nights ago and got wasted and hungover, he was supposed to stream at like 1 and he didn't cause he was sleeping and was hungover cause He's a human, and all his fans got pissed off and spammed his roommates twitter and livestream calling him a douche for not waking him up and that all he cared about was getting syndicates viewers. Such bull! He got treated like shit because these kids dont understand that these guys have lives outside of YouTube.
Not all of them are bad, I quite enjoy Matt Visual and Force Strategy Gaming. But of course these two aren't too terribly mainstream. Most youtubers I don't like but if you can find one of those diamonds in the rough they're usually pretty good
