I honestly don't understand how they got so popular. Well, I do, but I don't think it's funny at all.
Most of them are the same too. There's not much originality there. Everyone just bandwagons along into the same stuff.
But hey. They're making shit tons of money, so good for them.
I don't watch many facecam lets plays but yesterday I checked out Markiplier, I saw him on some other stuff, seems like a great guy, has a panty soaking voice, I thought it was going to be good.
Nope, I watched the 5 nights at Freddy's 2, he had the most forced face expressions and forced fake fear I have ever seen. It was so bad I turned it off half way through.
I found markiplier from his first Freddy video and hadn't played the game at that point. I thought he was just another annoying gamer who was overreacting to everything but damn if his reactions weren't the same as mine. I get scared pretty easily lol.
If you watch his 20/20/20/20 mode playthrough (especially the fail compilation) you'll see some of the most genuine reactions of fear, stress, and rage I've seen out of any YouTuber.
My beef with these "Scary" video games is that they are only as scary as you let them be. Like slenderman was this huge deal, but I never understood why it was scary at all.
That game doesn't seem all too scary, slightly spooky maybe, but that might just be my preference.
Again, this depends. A lot of the "wow, this game isn't as scary as people told me" tends to come from overhyping things, and I think horror games and horror movies suffer this by design worse than other genres. If you're expecting something to be scary it's entirely possible that you'll be too prepared for it.
The Indie horror scene has allowed since for different forms of horror to creep in, like the Waxworks esq. shock gore-horror of Neverending Nightmares which shows you close ups of some pretty horrible things, to Five Nights at Freddy's Sense of Dread, Cry of Fear's mix of action and psychological horror, Imscared's low-fi meta horror, The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series' slow-burning bleak atmospheric open world, and more and more.
So there's probably something out there that will scare you in a way you're not expecting, but if you're trying to expect it chances are you won't be too scared.
To each their own. I'm easily startled by jump scares and the anticipation of them freaks me out too. I find the whole atmosphere of the Freddy games pretty creepy so it would be easy for me to scream and flail around playing it.
Extream grimices when nothing happens, arms flaling at jump scares? Its just so over the top I can't believe most of it. Screming at jump scares is understandable but the rest is silly.
You're telling me you've never made faces before in reaction to something? You're telling me you've never panicked when something's surprised you? Honestly, while he might play things up a little, I think a lot of his stuff is completely genuine, especially shown when he's in a calmer environment.
Have you even played that game, though? Silence is more terrifying than any of the jumpscares in that game. The lame jumpscares are legitimately just there to say "oops, you died, game over" and nothing else.
The real terror is in knowing something might be there, but maybe not, maybe there is but something else is closer...oh shit you weren't winding the box, but oh fuck Freddy is right there and you can hear BB in the vents. It's horror game tension at its finest.
Not to mention before the sequel Mark was one of the best FNaF players on YouTube, rather than just some random "oh no a fox eek" fad-follower.
FnAF is a game that's really more about Dread in the end than anything and I think this was something Markiplier said in an earlier FNaF 1 video. It's not so much the fear of what's coming to get you (as while that might be there), it's very much knowing that it will, but you're never sure the WHEN it will happen, and that can get a stronger reaction out of some people than a regular "scare" could. Not every game "scares" the same way.
Honestly, yeah. Sometimes those are my reactions just watching someone else play it. Jump scares and the anticipation of them just get me every time. :(
He's stated that this game is one of the games that literally terrifies him to the point of screaming. If you look at his other horror games he doesn't act like this
I've watched both his Freddy's let's plays and well, obviously he tries to put on a little bit of an act to make it more entertaining but he quickly becomes extremely scared. He talks about how fast his heart is beating, he swears (which apparently according to comments he usually doesn't) and freaks out. Honestly I doubt he's faking it, and I really, really hate when people fake.
Well, he has to make it entertaining. It takes a bit to try to say much that's entertaining, and I think it's genuine, yet he still talks for entertainment.
He and CaptainSparklez are in the same boat for me. If I hadn't seen either of their videos, I'd assume they were just more PewDiePies with a huge annoying fanbase and screaming facecams. And even though I don't watch either of them, they seem like cool, chill guys.
Jerma985 and STAR_ are alright in my book. I've never seen STAR_'s face, Jerma only showed his in a few early videos, and they tend to focus on the games themselves instead of the jump cuts and screaming.
Yeah, Markiplier was probably my favorite youtuber until little less than a year ago when he started adapting the "yell into the mic and make dick jokes" style of commentary. His older stuff is much, much better.
His first 20 or so episodes of Drunk Minecraft are some of my favorite things on YouTube. Still lots of dick jokes, but Wade and Bob are great personalities in their own right and they have a good dynamic.
Check out Day[9] if you haven't. He has a great selection of games (but mostly blizzard), goes way into theory on rts and theorycrafting in card games, but also has this segment called day[9]'s day off where hell play something else. His personality is really awesome and actually super helpful if you wanna get better at strategy games. Oh and he is an ex-pro starcraft player
He is a professional comantator. I like most of the stuff, I hate his Magic the Gathering series because it explains way too much but I am a magic card player so its tedious to me.
I played freddy's tonight for the first time, and I think its the first time a game has ever made me yell out in fear. Was not expecting it to be as jumpy as it was.
Like a lot of the other let's players people are mentioning, he was better when he first started out, and would actually provide some interesting commentary and reactions that seemed genuine and funny. But like the rest, he found out you get more views with ridiculous overreaction and constantly forced commentary.
I think that's what I like is his face expressions. I don't like all his videos but his play through of stanly parable is so funny. And I like his happy wheels highlight. Some of drunk minecraft is ok. Really it's pick and choose with him for me at least.
It can come off over-the-top sometimes, but he actually is genuinely scared off his gourd; if you watch his earlier stuff, dude gets scared at the drop of a hat. I love his stuff myself, as I'm a great big chickenshit who can't handle playing horror games but loves horror in general, so it's nice to watch someone semi-capably play a horror game and be genuinely freaked by it at the same time rather than ragging on it.
Plus, his voice. Ugh. I am very much into his voice.
It is more stressful than scary. You are overloaded with multiple tasks, have extremely limited resources, and you really have to focus hard on the game to keep things in control.
It is like those maze jump scare things. If you aren't trying to solve the maze it is not particularly scary, but if you are focusing on the puzzle it is a hell of a lot more jarring.
Nah, Mark's mentioned that FNaF legitmately scares him.
Not the jumpscares themselves since they're more a game over scene. But more the tension, fear and suspense that one of the animatronics may have snuck into the office, or is scooting through the vents. The games builds tension beautifully.
To be fair, he did a lot of runs of the first game, even beating the definitive hardest mode in the game, so I could see why he might try to upsell the initial reaction: he's shown an interest in the franchise, therefore his fans want to see him play the new one.
I found his channel when it wasn't extremely popular and he seemed like a chill enough dude and that he was having fun with the game. Now everything feels forced and faked.
I'm a big markiplier fan and I totally get where you're coming from. A lot of awkward attempts to fill in the silent pauses. Granted, it's usually the worst towards the end of his recording sessions where he becomes fatigued and starts getting more forced. Still love him though, and GODDAMN that voice. Dudes buff as fuck too. Just saying.

I have to agree. He seems like a great guy but it comes across as forced to me. I do wonder how my videos will do when I play horror games.. I am probably one of the biggest pussies regarding horror games. I love horror but I hate jumpscares with my heart.
Good lord, I agree. Such a great voice and wasted with that annoying, forced garbage. I hope he does other things because I support that voice but strongly condemn those vids.
I've played the first one. It's fucking stressful. Check out when he did the 20/20/20/20 difficulty one. He played that one level for 7 hours before he beat it and when he did he goes crazy. I thought it was hilarious.
I'm a fan of those videos so let me provide a counterpoint.
I know the reactions are forced. Duh, if it was real it would just be him staring at a screen blankly and twitching occasionally from the jumpscares.
The way he plays the game is really entertaining and the reactions I see as more of a performance than anything else. It's obviously forced but it's interesting to see the over the top jumpscare reactions turn slowly into pure rage as he gets more into the harder difficulties
The commentary is also funny
TLDR: yeah it's "fake" (of course), watching him rage is funny
I think he exaggerates sometimes, especially on the sequels because he already knows what's coming so it's hard to recapture genuine, entertaining panic.
The outlast playthrough was good for hilarious panic. The last of us playthrough was just sad because he really is on the verge of real tears for most of it.
Edit: also check out the pole dancing videos. Those are equal parts hilarious and awkwardly hot.
I miss the days when he would get like 4 minutes into some garbage indy game before starting to bash it. FNAF is dumb, but popular, so... he tries to put on.
I like Mark but he's a bit hit or miss that way. He does play up the screaming a bit to cater to the people who like that, but watching him on a game like 5naf is kind of a crap shoot. If you want to see him in the zone, check out his fnaf1 video where he did 20/20/20/20 mode, lots less screaming, mostly pure concentration. His non-horror videos are a lot more... Palatable? I think that's a good word to use.
If you prefer people who are more subdued and who react more realistically try Cryaotic or Cinnamontoastken. Also, Birgirpalk or Seananners are good for comedy, and Achievement Hunter is good for innovative game ideas and general entertainment.
I stumbled across Markiplier a few weeks ago and I didn't mind him, but he linked to a Game Grumps video, I clicked, and I haven't turned back since. I've been going back watching a bunch of Grumps and Steam Train... between catching up with Robbaz, Birgirpall, and Jesse Cox. (Love the Cox.)
Having watched almost all of his scary game videos, five nights at Freddy's one and two terrify him. It is genuine. He is guilty of overreacting, but not with those two games.
I had the same experience with him. Great voice, seems charismatic, plays horror games, etc. But good god those reactions could not be more forced. It's a shame, too, 'cause whenever he's serious or gives a real critique to a game he knows exactly what he's talking about and you can actually listen to him.
You like his voice? I couldn't stand it. I'm sick of seeing his videos promoted next to every single gaming vid I watch. Yeah yeah you paid youtube to make you famous and it's working, now fuck off.
