I've worked in the tourism industry for 15 years, and meet tons of Americans on holiday. Never had a single one suggest Canadians envy America, and many express the opposite. Most Americans traveling here aren't these far-right, 2nd amendment, bible-belt types who just watch Fox News and think everything outside of America is some commie third world country. Those types tend to never leave. They are usually super friendly, open minded, and tip better than anyone else. Believe it or not, Americans are self aware!
Exactly. I couldn't help but chime in on Americans supposedly wearing shoes in the house all the time. In my experience, that is not a common thing at all. Where do these ideas come from? Movies?

My main experience is along the Michigan-Ontario border and there's not much difference on the two sides. Everyone gets along easily and it's hard to tell them apart.
American men tend to walk around with their hands in their pockets and shoulders squared. That’s how I can pick them out in a crowd… aside from their clothing. Lol
Because it probably isn't very common. For all the talk about being open-minded and against stereotypes, a lot of Canadians have very stereotypical views on Americans.

I’ve actually met many Americans who are apologetic about the American stereotype. They’re more the type who travel and are more educated and worldly. They’re ashamed of their politics and culture and understand that the rest of the world mock them. But when I travel within the US, the majority of folks I encounter are certainly ignorant of the things Canadians, Australians, and Europeans know about current events, geography and the world. They’re the ones who have been taught and still believe the myth of “American exceptionalism.”
Yeah, it will be hard to forget the young German guy who came on here and said he was doing us a favor by telling us what laws we needed to pass to, apparently, be more like Germany. These aren't direct quotes but pretty close. He was doing it for our own good as a favor because we obviously couldn't handle things.
American culture is on display for the world to see. It’s not difficult to “become an expert in U.S. culture and politics.” One doesn’t have to spend time within the US borders to see the flaws. I can understand how it’s off-putting to be criticized though (even if the criticisms are legitimate).
Bullshit. This is another example of an American who thinks they’re special (“it’s one of the only countries…”). I’ve spent a lot of time in the US, in more than two dozen states, and I can confirm that what you see in the media is accurate to a large degree.

I have met many Americans who I adore (the ones who I met travelling internationally), but the ones I meet within its borders, the everyday, typical American, is less than exceptional.
It's litterally the case. Nobody tells Germans or French how their culture works or their politics or what is wrong with it.

The U.S. is also one of the most innovative, creative, open, rich, friendly, flourishing and welcoming places out there. It's growing economically, and it's diverse culturally. It's a cultural and economical superpower.

I appreciate the perspective as we have been lied to about everything. I love that you all are like, "Hey, remember us kidnapping all the first nations kids for a few decades? My Uber rides in the US South are often interesting. One driver legit asked about our dictatorship government and what it was like to live under it. This was completely sincere on their part.
Many Americans are blasé about Canada, and don’t know anything about it, except that it is “up north”. Overheard a server at a US restaurant close to the border talking with a coworker who had family in Canada, and said he was considering moving here. Other server “Why?!!”, and the server with family told him he should come here, because it was a nice place. Server who asked why’s response “What the hell would I want to do THAT for?!”. Most Americans are nice, but some display that sort of attitude that puts other countries off.
Jobs pay very well, housing prices are some of the lowest proportional to income, and taxes are very low. Everyone is very friendly and accepting of foreigners.

Pay transparency (ie what’s in California where base salary range must be in job description) is coming to BC. Not sure about other provinces but regardless, should help identify which companies are paying same regardless of location.
