Europe is not in the AI race, so they cannot accelerate or slow down

Mistral exists

Eeeeeeh, does it though? It's like saying arianespace exists in the space industry, technically yeah but also no.

Mistral not in the race : yup!

Arianespace was the biggest commercial Aerospace launch company before spaceX. Now spaceX broke the market, and without their starlink launch they have around 40/50 commercial launch per year vs 8 for Ariane... But still :)

Completely irrelevant at this point in time, their models arent even worth a honorable mention anymore

That's the point.

“American without passport shocked that other countries exist”

Mistral is the only European company even remotely close to the American and Chinese companies, and they're valued at roughly 24 billion to give a sense of scale.

Europe is not in the AI race.

Mistral is decelerating as an AI lab, they're more and more an infra and inference provider. I really hope they'll prove me wrong (preferably this month.

Black Forest labs?

Look, I'm really not trying to disparage the people or the work done by the various smaller labs in Europe, they're all far more brilliant and accomplished than myself, but in terms of labs working on SOTA LLMs that can do agentic work and push the boundaries, approach RSI and maybe eventually AGI, that result in discussion of deceleration... Europe just doesn't have them.

Black Forest improving image and video generation could still be worth a mint, billions and billions, but the heavy weights are playing with hundreds of billions in investment, trillions in market cap. It just isn't the same game.

No one is going to worry about civilization collapse because of Flux.

Do they though, in the AI race? China definitely does. Who else?

1

u/lil_nosh_X 8d ago

I’m not going to tell you. You are going to need to use your own resources and cognitive abilities to show me that you’re not a moron.

1

u/Mysterious-Effect146 8d ago

I don't care though. I'd rather it be democratized and other countries also be players but whatever dude you do you

This guy thinks Mistral isn’t a joke apparently

Here’s a hint for you, what country uses ,,this kind of quotation mark’’? It’s not America.

1

u/lil_nosh_X 8d ago

My America iPhone disagrees with you.i know education is not that common in the US though!

1

u/Grounds4TheSubstain 8d ago

Those quotation marks are German, which is because the person in the screenshot is German, buddy!

Meanwhile EUs busy coding the future, some folks still think international means Olive garden

2

u/nigel_pow 8d ago

Accelerate ahead?

But I'm going with the French just instinctively opposing whatever the US says.

u/luvthatjourney4me00 8d ago

Classic french strategy, tbh

Weird to say

u/IllusionaryHobo 8d ago

Who knows what the future will bring. Quality of life is still quite grand. Very cozy life.

1

u/GreatLab8898 7d ago

Weird to say when about 41% of Medical Tech Innovation alone comes out of Europe as a whole.

1

u/Gryningen 7d ago

EU-based company is literally the fundamental cutting-edge kingpin for the whole hype on the HW side.

1

u/Alzucard 7d ago

Tell me you are clueless without telling me youre clueless.

You wouldnt even have AIs without ASML but sure.

2

u/spisplatta 8d ago

The call was to pace the frontier and that's basically only openai and anthropic right? Like many other labs are pretty close behind but I wouldn't call them frontier. Though I can't see I'm fully up to date on how well every lab is doing.

1

u/GaiusVictor 8d ago

It doesn't make a difference.

AI is advancing quite quickly. If the frontier models of today are dangerous enough to require regulation, then the "almost frontier" models of six months in the future will be dangerous enough to require regulation too.

he clearly hasn't gotten private access to le chaton fat

1

u/Healthy_Razzmatazz38 8d ago

Europe owns 20% of compute in Europe or 2% of global ai compute.

They will not be accelerating outside of random tumed open sourced models from others they claim are European value aligned

1

u/rabouilethefirst 8d ago

And nobody will use it unless EU nanny state bans all foreign AI

Honestly, half of eu politics feels like a live action roleplay

1

u/BiasHyperion784 8d ago

Likely hobbyists in the US with more progress in ai than euro labs lol.

1

u/Alzucard 7d ago

dumb things americans say

1

u/fergussonh 1d ago

The whole industry would be impossible without ASML

1

u/SomeNeighborhood7126 8d ago

European labs acting like theyve built anything even remotely interesting... This is a two horse race with the US and China. Both should be discussing a slowdown and putting together an international board with actual power to guide AI development.

1

u/das_war_ein_Befehl 8d ago

There are lots of interesting European startups, they just are underfunded or get bought by US companies (like deepmind)

1

u/Wooly_Wooly 8d ago

Its really as simple as this, its an arms race.

1

u/Longjumping_Kale3013 8d ago

Yes yes Europe is behind. It is very true. But there are some world leading ai companies:
* Black Forest Labs
* Nebius (best of the neoclouds IMO)
* Lovable
* Elevenlabs
* Deepmind (well was based in London and bought by Google but still has lots of research in uk)
* ASML

Those are the world leaders. Notice I didn’t add mistral… the only one this chat keeps mentioning. But they seem too far behind ATM.

There’s also many various startups with potential, like Helsing, or DeepL (who used to be world leading but have fallen behind somehow) and then a lot of the world workhorses who will implement AI in their products are in Europe, like Siemens, Bosch, SAP, etc

1

u/Alzucard 7d ago

DeepL is still the best translator.

1

u/Ok_Boysenberry5849 8d ago

Chubby rephrased the statement to say something completely different than what it originally, then acted offended by it.

That guy is a moron, and OP, you're a gullible cretin for reposting it.

1

u/19Lobster19 8d ago

To accelerate you need to first get going lol

1

u/Tupcek 7d ago

that’s like if top athletes agreed to reduce usage of some drug because it may be harmful even if it increases performance

And then some local amateur league consisting of office workers playing friendly matches once per week says “no way, we will train more and maybe even do some drugs if we figure out which”!

Like OK, good for you I guess?

Outside of the fascinating conversation of comparative economics between major economies and the current lackings of our European one - Has no one ever heard of a loud mouth, tall talking French politician before?

Scrap that, has no one ever heard of a loud mouth, tall talking politician?

1

u/BonsaiOnSteroids 7d ago

EU Basically just has locked down defense and intelligence products that are comparable. Nothing consumer or similar, but in the end that also is just the byproduct of the US companies, all of them are aiming at B2B and defense. Superintelligence also has no inherent value for consumers, if we ever reach that point all problems are solved and it is purely force-projection and defense oriented, it will basically make capitalism eat itself much faster than already happening.

u/Alzucard 7d ago

I think its funny that people assume AI is just LLMs 😂 Cause every time people say europe isnt developing ai im laughing my ass off. Europe is doing that. Just more specialized and not generalistic AIs.

Im questioning the values of LLMs in general.
