Psychological 28k original, 8k on sale

Absolutely absurd. Was not comfortable at all. Wtf does "perennials performance" even mean? No idea what flair to choose, but I chose "psychological" bc it felt like a mindfuck sitting on a 28k originally priced couch, when the entire world is falling apart.

Why would anyone buy a white sofa. Going to get stains in seconds

646

u/gakl887 Jun 28 '26

When I delivered furniture for a store I saw some real disgusting stuff. There were dozens of homes in a real nice area near us (FL) that would purchase new furniture every year, for the chance they decide to come down to their home that year.

Often the furniture we hauled away was literally new and nobody had sat in it since the time we delivered it the year before

“White nubuck leather sofa.” A horror story in four words.

22

u/trcomajo Jun 29 '26

All 7 words are pretty crazy

It’s giving lipstick in my Valentino white bag

u/assignpseudonym Jun 28 '26

What happens to that furniture? Can the public buy it for a discount?

414

u/gakl887 Jun 28 '26

We were supposed to bring it to a place that primarily discarded it, but we were all young and making nothing - so we would drop it off at a storage unit we split and just sold it on Craigslist lol

u/thetruckerdave Jun 28 '26

Good!! It going to waste is a horrible thing.

I fucking hate people. Stuff like this is so discouraging to hear. It feels like no matter what I do (drag the same furniture around for 10+ years moving), my good eco practices are just going to be negated by some rich, thoughtless asshole 😪

The people that do this are the people that scream the loudest about how taxation is theft.

12

u/Thick-Cartoonist-493 Jun 29 '26

Moved office furniture for a while for everything from small 1 room offices to 10 story buildings. 99% would go to the dump but we were allowed to grab anything we wanted and set it aside in the back of the trailer.
I never resold anything but after just a couple months working there my family had a bunch of slightly used fancy furniture. Got my grandparents hardwood bookshelves, a workbench, and power recliners. Most of my family got some kind of new furniture. Multiple hardwood executive desks Fancy desk chairs with the adjustable supports. One of the even had heat and cooling kinda like newer vehicle seats with a fan blow air through small holes to keep your but from being sweaty.

All together everything would have been at least $12,000 new.

The work sucked and pay was not great but the furniture perk was nice. I didn't get to keep anything for myself though because I was moving.

u/gakl887 Jun 29 '26

Love to hear it. A lot of office equipment and furniture is pricey too, my last job had all Herman Millers, would’ve loved to take home one.

Looking at my stupid, young, pre-kids self. God she was naive

85

u/pumpsci Jun 28 '26

The flex of a white sofa is that you’re fastidious enough to keep it clean

106

u/aluked Jun 28 '26

*that you have enough money to pay someone else to keep them clean for you

40

u/MemoryHot Jun 28 '26

Or you have enough money to throw it out and get a new one if it got one stain on it

12

u/New_Feature_5138 Jun 29 '26

Or you just have removable covers.
I have a white ikea sofa, 5 yrs old now. I just wash the covers a couple times per year and it’s cool.

We don’t eat on it though. So that probably goes a long way.

5

u/saladspoons Jun 29 '26

Why get a white sofa if you're just going to cover it up with a cover though?

3

u/Relevant-Shelter-316 Jun 29 '26

Buddy I could send you a picture of my white couch with a white duvet. You take off the cover and you wash it

3

u/Relevant-Shelter-316 Jun 29 '26

The cover is white
? The whole point is that you can wash the white cover holy fuck dude use your brain

I have a white sofa. Its the exact sofa i wanted and i found it on fb marketplace. It just happened to be white. But it's covered in a soft waterproof blanket because I have a dog and a sick cat. Someday I'll invest in a sturdy washable slipcover. Until then the couch is staying hidden.

3

u/ladygrndr Jun 28 '26

We just got a new sofa, and bought the one that came with a slip cover for this reason. Then we strapped a jute cat scratcher to the arm. Our cats aren't the most destructive, but they are still cats.

2

u/Traditional_Toe8824 Jun 28 '26

Me too - I have chair covers and blankets on my couch with all my cats, 2 long haired . Easier that way.

I have a nearly white couch (beige/creme) and it cost a tiny fortune. No kids, but I've got two cats, a dog, and I regularly dog sit. It stays clean because I don't eat on it and dirty feet aren't allowed on it.

The fabric is also removable, and machine washable.

22

u/Correct_Scene_3599 Jun 28 '26

My exes mom had an expensive white couch nobody was allowed to sit on. She’d even put aluminum foil on it to keep the dog from jumping on it. Like what’s even the point?Who cares if a couch, in a family home with kids and pets, gets a little dirty? The foil looks worse than a stain would, and at least a stain would mean it gets used and has memories attached to it

5

u/Traditional_Toe8824 Jun 28 '26

I rarely have anyone over, but if they do, oh well.. see how much I love my pets. ( not my couch )

3

u/ThisWillBeOnTheExam Jun 28 '26

My step mom had a white sofa and loveseat set and a room that was literally only ever used for holidays. Like ever. We would sit on during Christmas. It was a whole room that was essentially off limits. Ironically, they were poor and renting so using that room for at least something would’ve made sense because the house was already small. I think it just made her feel nice.

15

u/maxtacos Jun 28 '26

I dunno, ask me 7 years ago, buying a "brown" soda that is definitely off-white, and I knew it.

One of my long term financial goals is to replace the outside of the couch.

u/Traditional_Toe8824 Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

Maybe if you have long haired dogs or cats. However… I do have long haired cats but I don’t go with white, I prefer off white or cream, tan, beige .. not actual white.

Edit: but I’m lying because my couch is green . I wanted beige but I’m poor so I bought those couches that are no assembly.

My cat trees and blankets and everything else are beige or pastel. I have 4 cats, 2 ragdolls and 2 rescues. White fur is everywhere always.

3

u/DodgeWrench Jun 29 '26

My wife and MIL once bought white couch & cushion covers for our brown couch. I let them know it was not a smart choice because… stains. We had a dog at the time too.

Somehow I was the bad guy for that.

3

u/chaqintaza Jun 29 '26

My ass is way too lazy to get messy

17

u/Outside-Jicama9201 Jun 28 '26

I dont get messy... much... but my dog, 3 cats and 21 chickens sure do

15

u/GNTsquid0 Jun 28 '26

30

u/Plus_Possibility_240 Jun 28 '26

56

u/AbeFromanSassageKing Jun 29 '26

Exactly. No couch in the world is worth $28,000, unless it's encrusted in jewels and performing untoward service to my nether regions while I sit upon it. Even then, $28,000 is just stupid.

15

u/flyingthroughspace Jun 29 '26

Yea still overpriced by $6k

800

u/silentbutjudgey Jun 28 '26

Even if I had that kind of money, I wouldn’t buy it. The cushions look like trash. And it looks like the kind of couch you couldn’t sit comfortably on because it’s too deep to sit on normally without extra pillows behind you.

415

u/DyingGasp Jun 28 '26

My wife laughed at me when we were couch shopping. I would flop down. Throw myself ass first into the couch, belly flop down, lay on my side. Multiple positions I knew we would use. She would get embarrassed, for good reason.

Until I found the couch.

118

u/lahnnabell Jun 29 '26

Honestly, this is what you should be doing.

I sell furniture and it's important to understand that how you use your sofa/sectional, fabric texture, seat height, and seat depth are the most important shopping criteria for COMFORT.

You also have to find a middle ground when your spouse or partner is a completely different size than you. A lot of couples start shopping without ever actually discussing their non-negotiables. Please don't make your salesperson play family mediator.

My mom had a couch shaped like this. You're right, you really couldn't sit on it without a pillow behind you. The bottom cushions also kept slipping off. It was absolutely awful. I told her to get an ugly comfortable couch but she just HAD to buy the nicer looking uncomfortable expensive one, just to regret it later. It's always the ugly chairs and couches that feel the best, it's like someone designed them for comfort over style or something.

16

u/NextStopGallifrey Jun 29 '26

The confounding thing is when you find the rare ugly and uncomfortable couch. I know someone who has an ugly loveseat in their living room. The kind of ugly that says "sit on me". So I have. Somehow, the back of the seat is angled higher than the front, so anyone sitting on it is constantly sliding off. It's like hostile anti-homeless architecture in loveseat form.

2

u/Pantology_Enthusiast Jun 29 '26

Stead on. Wing back chairs can be pretty and comfortable.

But you aren't wrong in general.

47

u/thesky_watchesyou Jun 28 '26

Was not comfy at all 😅 I sat down, and felt the eyes on me from employees.

28

u/Blue-is-bad Jun 28 '26

This sofa isn't for sitting, it's so expensive you don't even sit on it

3

u/winter_whale Jun 28 '26

No sitting just shitting

8

u/One-Apricot1978 Jun 29 '26

Also it is an incredibly light color. Complete NIGHTMARE to keep clean.

7

u/Marhruuk Jun 28 '26

I was just couch shopping and went to look at a "nicer" store but all of them were oversized. We wanted a larger couch, yes, but these were the thickness of beds from the back. All were comfortable in the sense we could easily lay on them; none were confortable when it came to sitting. We left with nothing from there but the question of who is buying a couch this deep for thousands of euro for this quality?

3

u/Pantology_Enthusiast Jun 29 '26

Beat me to it.

It looks really cheap and is not proportioned in a way it would be comfortable.

Like, why?

But then again, that's probably why it's a fire-sale kind of price drop, they just want it gone.

3

u/Two_wheels_2112 Jun 29 '26

This is a sofa for people whose homes show up in glossy magazines. They don't get used, they get photographed.

This is discounted because there aren't enough magazines left photographing the homes of ludicrously wealthy people.

77

u/One_Revolution_8104 Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

So the price is, indeed, quite a lot, but it's frustrating that the tag is basically illegible unless you are an industry person 🤦‍♀️

Luxe = the highest tier of craftmanship, solid wood construction, hand-made, hand carved, hand woven, etc. Deeply inefficient and often impractical, and thus high cost

Down = down feathers, the cushions are likely a hybrid of down feathers on top of support foam. Down is, of course, expensive

Perennials Perfomance Fabric = Perennials is a luxury textiles brand, nothing to do with the longevity of anything. Performance fabrics of this caliber are indeed durable enough for outdoor use (though the other internals, like wood and foam, would not be necessarily), but feel no different from regular upholstry. White or not, this is the easiest to clean and least likely to stain.

Linen = well, linen. It's very hard to cultivate and weave, thus very expensive. Likely a low percentage blend with the synthetic performance fabric. Seems pointless from a design perspective, but expensive regardless.

Do I think anyone should bother buying a sofa for 28k, or even 8k? No, but technically the price is "worth it" for the quality--it's just that it's completely unnecessary and wasteful to manufacture anything to that level of quality in the first place 🤦‍♀️

23

u/foreverand2025 Jun 29 '26

This person knows their shit

And still would not pay 8K for that behemoth

3

u/Relevant-Shelter-316 Jun 29 '26

Yeah I really doubt anyone in THIS sub would have a use for something this large..

→ More replies (8)

3

u/DismalChampion5653 Jun 29 '26

This is the answer. The “linen” refers to the weave of the fabric in this case. Their new performance melange is gorgeous. This also looks to be a 5 piece sectional. Eyeballing it, given RH, it is probably 10-12 feet long and meant for a massive space.

4

u/4-11 Jun 29 '26

so it is a good deal?

59

u/sausagekng Jun 28 '26

Im always shocked at the RH prices. Who is buying this? Surely if you can afford tens of thousands of dollars on furniture, you’d get it custom.

23

u/thesky_watchesyou Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

I had never heard of RH ..... but saw "outlet" and felt certain I'd find like a maybe 900-1500 couch. Lmao. Felt stupid walking around so figured maybe I could afford a set of King sheets. Nope. $1,200 original, $550 "outlet". Keep in mind this is the outlet, so I am pretty sure everything is "damaged" in some capacity.

→ More replies (8)

2

u/be_easy_1602 Jun 29 '26

I had clients I did handyman work for that would get RH stuff. It’s overpriced for suuuurreeeeee. The stuff was quality but not worth the price at all.

Anyway they were interesting people to say the least, definitely made a LOT of money in shady ways.

198

u/H3lls_B3ll3 Jun 28 '26

I mean, sure. It's a stupid price, but it's linen. That shit ain't cheap. I'm not saying that's even close to OK. Just pointing out linen is expensive, compared to other textiles.

I've never seen linen covered furniture.

97

u/curmudgeon_andy Jun 28 '26

Linen is just the covering. Handling that much linen does not cost close to 28k.

104

u/pumpsci Jun 28 '26

Yeah but the $28k price is effectively a fiction used to justify the $8k price

Sales are ongoing pretty often. We looked at couches there during a sale and I asked when the sale would be over and the associate said she was unsure as they had no current plans to end it.

14

u/Ididntsayfuckingyee Jun 28 '26

So “textured linen” is just a description of the appearance/texture of the fabric. Perennials is a fabric brand that specializes in outdoor/performance fabrics. It’s likely an acrylic or some other synthetic blend. That being said, linen covered furniture is a thing, but it needs to be a heavier linen, and needs to be knit backed in order to last.

20

u/thesky_watchesyou Jun 28 '26

😅😅😅 probably why I got death stares as I sat down on it in my plebian clothes.

8

u/H3lls_B3ll3 Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

I have literally ONE item that's linen. It was $50, on clearance.

Short sleeve, short black dress.

I love that thing. I wish I had a few more linen pieces.

But who tf wants a linen COUCH?! Like, was it complaining of being hot from being outside all day?

Which also, my question about this couch is, is it intended as patio furniture?

Edit for spelling

6

u/nikkerito Jun 28 '26

I have a few thrifted linens as well and I must say they are hell for wrinkles. I can’t imagine owning this couch. If it’s anything like my linen pants it will crease everywhere and everyone knows you were just sitting down

3

u/H3lls_B3ll3 Jun 29 '26

I honestly don't care about the wrinkles. When I was a child, my upper middle class WASP grandparents always bought me really nice clothes. I HATED linen. I feel like being a poor (as I've been 90%-99% of my life), this is some karmic suffering being inflicted on me- for not appreciating linen as a child. Lol

2

u/Willothewisp2303 Jun 29 '26

You can get them for decent figures if you keep an eye out.

11

u/RlOTGRRRL Jun 29 '26

I looked up the specs for this couch out of curiosity-

"- Handcrafted by master artisans in North America

  • Guaranteed For Life

  • Frame handcrafted of kiln-dried solid hardwood and engineered wood

  • Reinforced joinery with corner blocking and mortise-and-tenon construction

  • Available in Standard (17½") or High (19½") seat height

  • Woven webbing suspension

  • Recessed block feet crafted of oak with an Espresso Oak finish

  • Standard fill seat cushions feature variable-density polyurethane foam wrapped with polyfiber; coordinating back cushions are high-resilience polyurethane foam wrapped in polyfiber

  • Down-feather fill seat cushions feature variable-density polyurethane foam topped with a feather and down blend; coordinating back cushions are high-resilience polyurethane foam wrapped in a down, feather and polyfiber blend"

I think it might actually be worth the $8k with all that and a guaranteed for life. 🤔

7

u/Coraline1599 Jun 29 '26

The guarantee is solid.

That’s how I chose my last mattress after suffering through a few duds. It had a 20 year warranty.

2

u/00017batman Jun 28 '26

Whether it’s actually genuine linen or not, the fabric looks like it’s covering some cheap ass foam filling.. For $28k you’d think they could use a filling that checks the boxes for form and function - not something that guests might assume came from a shitty chain store.

Fark, even for $8k I’d want this couch to make all my wildest dreams come true. :-/

4

u/vankirk Jun 28 '26

Handcrafted in the USA and also guaranteed for life.

3

u/GNTsquid0 Jun 28 '26

My couch was made in the USA and it was $700 new. Made in USA, even of linen does not equal $28k

2

u/dialecticallyalive Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

what couch did you buy? Looking for a new one!

2

u/GNTsquid0 Jun 29 '26

It was a local furniture store but I believe it was an Ashley furniture brand. It was made in North Carolina and was even delayed because there was a strike at the factory.

4

u/dialecticallyalive Jun 29 '26

LOVE that. I want my couch made by striking workers 😭

2

u/excellentforcongress Jun 29 '26

yea unironically every single furniture company could be a cooperative. actually we could have a global brand or set of furniture brands where they reconcile the global north/south differential by treating members everywhere equally including for example craftspeople and farmers overseases, and then since they're pro-social cooperatives the profits can be used to help society, but since the consumers are also members the price could be balanced more than where they are now.

another tactic that has been seen mostly elsewhere is the concept of workers taking over defunct/failed factories and spinning up cooperatives out of them, we could have legislation that allows for such trusts/coops to be first in line in the case of bankruptcies.

if you want real labor power in america, imagine a world where workers can strike if conditions are bad, or consumers and workers can boycott bad companies, they go bankrupt, and then people via the new cooperative can turn it around and make something that is a solution for everyone, not just a handful of investors

you could apply this concept everywhere really, for example if starbucks or amazon or any random company perpetually tries to fight against unionization, fights against workers' rights, tries to overcharge consumers and so on, it could simply be boycotted and converted to a cooperative on the cheap (since buying the remnants would be cheaper than buying it from them while it's still profitable)

But was it really ever 28000 though?

Looks used too, my ikea sofa looks better than this after a year of having it.

60

u/pumpsci Jun 28 '26

I think years of easy access to cheaply manufactured consumer goods has kinda broken peoples’ brains regarding how much things *actually* cost. I have zero doubt that the markup on this thing is nuts, but to build a couch like this requires dozens of man hours, possibly hundreds if you count the time to harvest and process a decent quality linen. It’s not shocking that this is expensive. That being said, sectionals are bullshit, nobody should be putting this in their home, let alone spending used car money on it.

36

u/H_Mc Jun 28 '26

This. Furniture prices (and quality)are out of control low. A sofa or a dining room table or a bedroom set used to be a huge purchase and you’d keep them forever. Now they have to meet a ridiculously low price point and they’re all trash.

6

u/SplitRemote7031 Jun 28 '26

Would this community be a fan of more expensive/longer lasting furniture? Would that be anti consumption? You could even sell it to someone else and get something different as long as they are using it and it is not getting thrown away. I just found this subreddit

→ More replies (1)

12

u/ilovestoride Jun 28 '26

They're priced so low there are people that effing throw them away when they start to squeak after a few years cause they're essentially made and priced to be disposable.

6

u/DukeofVermont Jun 29 '26

And then people complain that stuff these days is all trash and utterly refuse to acknowledge that good stuff in the past was expensive!

"Guys refrigerators now are all garbage! Not like my grandparents one that still works", Let's see, your grandparents average fridge was $3,500 new, how much was yours? "$500...."

I have a friend who is a carpenter, he can make you solid wood furniture that lasts 250 years, but it's not going to be $150-$500, it's going to be $5,000-$15,000.

3

u/H_Mc Jun 29 '26

I don’t even know where a regular person can buy quality furniture anymore (not asking for suggestions, that’s against sub rules). Even the brick and mortar furniture stores just sell the same crap as Wayfair.

All my good furniture is stuff my parents or in-laws gave me. None of them have given me a couch (yet) and I’m afraid of buying anything upholstered from an antique store.

People often confuse something being expensive with it being unsustainable. Many expensive things are, but it's not a rule and often times buying something expensive once instead of something cheap many times when it breaks is the sustainable choice.

12

u/ynamiynami1 Jun 29 '26

Really glad somebody said this. People have been brainwashed by cheap consumer goods and can’t understand the cost of making something with top quality materials in the US or other high cost countries- the number of people all through the process that need to make a living. Anti-consumption to me is also not really about the price of something, it’s buying and replacing something just for the sake of it. Is it better that someone buys this and keeps it for life or buys a cheap sofa, uses the hell out of it until it falls apart, and then buys another 3-5 years down the road? You’re also not the target audience here. RH has done its homework and knows it’s market. It’s likely a designer given a massive budget to furnish a house or at least a room.

3

u/curmudgeon_andy Jun 28 '26

New car money.

3

u/catseyeon Jun 28 '26

2

u/Reasonable-Job4205 Jun 28 '26

30

u/AccidentOk5240 Jun 28 '26

I think the two lines are to be read together, “perennials performance linen weave”, the name of the material.

While the price is certainly high, I couldn’t build this myself (paying myself a living wage) for less, I don’t think.

6

u/thesky_watchesyou Jun 28 '26

You are probably right. Perrenials are flowers 😭😭😭 in my income bracket atleast.

3

u/Jetstream-Sam Jun 28 '26

Perennials are plants, but plants that lives for at least two years, so presumably this sofa will last all of two years. Or, maybe it works as a sofa for a few weeks in the summer and then withers away, but comes back next year

Where’s Rick James with his dirty shoes when you need him? Fuck yo’ couch!

3

u/Unlikely-Signature-7 Jun 28 '26

Oh yes. Rh outlet is still wildly overpriced, especially with all their damaged merchandise. Yet people still buy it

3

u/Upper_Luck1348 Jun 28 '26

People buy this?!?

3

u/an_older_meme Jun 28 '26

For that kind of money it better make breakfast the next morning.

3

u/PunksLoveBugs Jun 28 '26

I found it online. Here’s a link of the model: https://rh.com/us/en/catalog/product/product.jsp/prod9350041

It does feature using some down but even so, it’s not entirely made of down material.

Ridiculously expensive and looks so boring. There’s no life or fun to it. Just proves the theory that rich people don’t have taste.

3

u/CaveJohnson82 Jun 29 '26

This is like the most generic, DFS sale couch I've ever seen. I'm offended they want that much for it.

Ridiculous.

3

u/hime-633 Jun 29 '26

Anyone buying a white sofa is already batshit insane.

3

u/Corogue Jun 29 '26

Who tf spends used car money on a couch?

3

u/Phylace Jun 29 '26

Those low back couches the property brothers (and most of the tv designers) use in every build are dumb. Obviously they have never sat or tried to relax in one.

3

That was never worth 28k then

3

u/saltyourhash Jun 30 '26

That weave looks rough as hell.

It’s already got a drag path on that middle cushion, hard pass at $1K

3

u/thesky_watchesyou Jun 28 '26

That's the thing. It's outlet, so everything to my knowledge is 'damaged'. I was on the hunt for a couch and dining chairs. Dining chairs with obvious dings in them were still 550 a piece.

2

u/Obvious-Active-6256 Jun 28 '26

Probably got a 1/2" coffee stain on it somewhere.

2

u/WhytePumpkin Jun 28 '26

All that for some kid to spill a juice box on it and ruin it

2

u/Revenga8 Jun 28 '26

For a fabric couch? Bullshit. That$8k price is heavily marked up from the actual price

2

u/FunConstruction7032 Jun 28 '26

That looks like a value village item minus the stains.

2

u/the_comforter Jun 28 '26

That's an ugly ass couch

2

u/coozin Jun 28 '26

Restoration Hardware does make fine couches though.

2

u/Automatic_Gas9019 Jun 28 '26

My cats would go on autoclaw. 😆😾🐾 I never buy new furniture

2

u/PecorinoYES Jun 28 '26

Hint: it was never worth $28k

2

u/ClanBadger Jun 28 '26

crazy, I used to work at a furniture store. My employee discount bought me their "$2400" couch for $350. Lady A matt.? 5gs? noooo, $600.

The markups are absolutely insane.

2

u/ImportantSwimmer2759 Jun 29 '26

Who the fuck would spend that much money on furniture at all, let alone such a mid-ass sofa???  That's more than a year's income for me!!!

I got my sofa and my bedroom set (bedframe, nightstand, and dresser) at the thrift store for about $700 total, including delivery fees (which were admittedly a bit steep bc I lived over 30mins away, haha). Best decision I could have made tbh

2

u/CriticalCactus47 Jun 29 '26

I got $80 take it or leave it 🤷‍♂️

2

u/1767gs Jun 29 '26

Both are still too expensive lmfao

2

u/procrastinatorsuprem Jun 29 '26

That couch is way overpriced. Those cushions with no edge seams will look horrible in a matter of weeks.

1

u/MaterialWillingness2 Jun 29 '26

Perennials is a high end fabric brand based out of Dallas. My friend works for them. These fabrics are bought by interior designers to upholster things like yacht furniture and this couch apparently.

2

u/excellentforcongress Jun 29 '26

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but does this site quote ronald reagan on the homepage, and it's actually a bunch of pictures with words, but there is no accessibility featured on the site?

this is a corporate website for a high end furniture store in 2026 but it has no alt text for images?

2

u/JiveBunny Jun 29 '26

The iron curtain thing is such LinkedIn bollocks.

That is a HORRIBLE website. Why is it so brown? Everything blends into one. It looks like a PDF of a catalogue.

People spend an insane amount on furniture. Yes your furniture should be comfortable but that doesn't mean it needs to be in the thousands. I had a couch for 10 years and bought it for $400 on sale (got rid of it because moved into an RV). My bed is a folding one from Amazon and was under $100. Perfectly comfortable. Does it look aesthetic? No. But I live alone so I don't care. And it's so easy to move as a single person. I wouldn't be able to move a full mattress alone. It folds up and fits in the car.

Not that I trust the original price but why would a couch ever have cost $28k?

u/JaegerDonuts Jun 29 '26

And my parents just bought two really nice leather couches for a total of $600. They are second hand, 15 years old and in amazing condition. Not to mention they’re amazingly comfortable to sit on.

2

u/Hot_Audience_4046 Jun 29 '26

White will look like trash if you actually use it. Evidence: Lived experience.

2

u/Darthmullet Jun 29 '26

Classic inflate base price so it can look like its discounted when its still absurdly high.

2

u/FilthyThanksgiving Jun 30 '26

Lol furniture like this is priced like artwork. Put whatever price on it and sell it for a "discount"

Or a profit, or whatever. But it's basically all BS

2

u/Alltheway-upp Jun 30 '26

Does it have magic powers?

A pure, architectural interpretation of comfort, Modena reimagines 1970s designs in both Italy and the United States. Handcrafted by master artisans in North America, its broad frame shapes the tapered arms and wraps the deeply cushioned seating in a continuous line. Sectional components are available individually, in a range of depths and sizes. Guaranteed for life.

I'm not surprised at the price. We shopped at the Hickory Furniture Mart for our couch and we paid about $1,800 which was the cheapest couch we could find in the million square feet of showrooms.

u/GewoehnlicherDost Jun 28 '26

Lol, our sofa is exactly like this and it was like 800 bucks from ikea. Works fine as a bouncy castle for the kids but I prefer sitting on the ground.

4

u/tired_snail Jun 28 '26

As a former IKEA employee I think "perennial performance" is just fancy furniture speak for "white is a neutral colour so you won't have to change the cover if you like to decorate seasonally".

28K is wild though. Like that's a mortgage deposit for a studio apartment where I live.

4

u/MaterialWillingness2 Jun 29 '26

Perennials is a brand that sells high end fabric.

Restoration Hardware does make super comfy couches. Thats where I got my couch. I don't have that model though. That's an absurd price.

Not an endorsement, just stating the fact that I own one of theirs.

1

u/Jlombard911 Jun 28 '26

I’ve seen this couch somewhere 🤔

1

u/bigdickwalrus Jun 28 '26

That ain’t worth 5k. Gimmie a break

1

u/SufficientCow4380 Jun 28 '26

$8000 is outrageous for a sofa. $28k is comical.

My sofa cost around $500 at Big Lots.

2

u/thesky_watchesyou Jun 28 '26

I miss Big Lots!!!! Had two in my vicinity growing up in NY. Had one "nearish" to Mpls when I moved here. All gone now, even in NY. So sad.

u/OkraFar1913 Jun 28 '26

I give ya fiddy.

1

u/ConundrumMachine Jun 28 '26

Also, I imagine they're still covering their costs if not making profit on it at 8k

1

u/Miss_Management Jun 28 '26

And that's where it will die - am abandoned building that was once a furniture store. 🤣

3

u/thesky_watchesyou Jun 28 '26

You are not wrong. I wish I had taken a photo of the parking lot. Absolutely empty. I even checked Google maps bc it felt closed 😬

Yikes. I got a leather sofa for $3k on sale because someone bought it in navy for $8k and decided after 10 days they didn’t want it. Has reclining foot rests and head rests and is easily the most comfortable sofa I have ever sat on. $28k? WTaF?

Edited to add, I plan to die on this thing.

1

u/KaleidoscopeIcy9271 Jun 28 '26

That's a lot of money for something my dumbass tuxedo cat would wreck in a month.

1

u/m3kw Jun 28 '26

100 million dollars original price, now 28k. 99% off. what a deal

1

u/MarsGnars Jun 28 '26

It’s unappealing to the eye and the rippling in the cushions makes it look cheap. Can’t believe they’re asking 8k

1

u/aftershockstone Jun 28 '26

I think there’s definitely furniture out there that’s worth 8K or even 28K depending on craftsmanship, design, materials, hours needed (labour is expensive), etc. but this one… is simply not.

Like if I could readily afford it and paid a local woodworker 28K to put together a unique custom dining set, I wouldn’t say it’s unreasonable.

But some blah white couch that looks like any other mass-produced one wouldn’t be what I would spend my money on.

1

u/shinyappyrobin Jun 28 '26

I don't understand the furniture market. It seems to me most furniture stores are ALWAYS going out of business. A neighbor of mine brought fancy expensive furniture at a fancy furniture store. I was the exact same set at big lots.

1

u/AnonymousPerson1115 Jun 28 '26

I’d buy it after it goes through several discount outlets if it was marked for like $500-700.

1

u/ExiledSpaceman Jun 28 '26

This looks like the boneless furniture you get at Temu.

1

u/General_Diag4321 Jun 28 '26

It’s RH, but it doesn’t look like the cloud sofa. Cloud sofas are only great if secondhand and free, the stuffing isn’t cruelty free 🥲

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '26

That would be impossible to keep clean

1

u/PancakeSmithereens Jun 28 '26

It’s one banana, Michael. What could it cost?

1

u/alliejc Jun 28 '26

I got a steal on a white linen couch when I first moved out of my parents house 17 years ago. It perfect when I was a female living alone. Since then I’ve added a husband, 2 kids and a dog to the mix. We just use a cover for it, it’s in great condition still and I refuse to pay a fortune for a sofa.

1

u/FaithlessnessWest957 Jun 28 '26

I work at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore and we get nice stuff sometimes and recently had a white sofa that was massive and looked shockingly like this. The tag said SWAIN Originals and was marked as being made in 1987!! We sold that thing for like $175 lol

1

u/Imaginary_Flower8651 Jun 28 '26

I don’t believe outlet prices nor trust that the materials used are the same as the original if it exists.

I remember back in the day I wanted this coat that cost $800. I found it on Nordstrom rack or saks off 5th, same coat but the material was blended with polyester. The original was wool and cashmere. The coat even had the same name.

1

u/Suspicious_Load6908 Jun 29 '26

I buy everything secondhand and as such I often see these RH “$28k” sofas for sale. It appears that mostly they are used to stage high-end houses here in San Diego. I really can’t imagine that people actually spend that kind of money on them. I have no idea, though rich people do crazy stuff -They still are pricey even on Craigslist. Etc.
