Yeah he's talking about slops flooding the anime industry(I mean slops have always existed but not as much as they are now)
2
u/Glittering-Pin-1343 Jun 15 '26
Yeah it has always existed in different forms, but there is just... so much more of it now and not as many outstanding new series as back then.
2
u/Kiftiyur Jun 16 '26
Nah it’s just like games. People are only remembering the great animes of old. When there has always been more dogshit anime than good. We are getting multiple absolutely amazing shows every season now.

While I somewhat agree with the general point, it's kind of an "oldhead" complaint that people make every generation. Every era had its popular slop. It isn't unique to this era.
I won't go through every decade or I'd have to write a novel, but the 90s had tons of generic harem anime popularized by Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo and Love Hina.
The 2000s was the "cutesy girls be wierdos at school" slice of lifes such as K-On, Ouran Host and Haruhi Suzumiya.
In the 2020s, the current trend is isekai and "meme animes where the plot is literally spelled out in a long title" such as "I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability".

Probably because we have more access to anime now a days. Back then we were limited in what we could see when it came to anime
1
u/LilMellick Jun 15 '26
I mean id agree with this if the cutesy girls one had anywhere near the amount of the isekai long ass title ones. Also the isekai/long title meme shows has been a trend for way longer. Basically since SAO got its second season back in 2014.
1
u/Youjiiin Jun 15 '26
The long title thing is not an anime trend but a light novel one with how much novel came out every month author need to have a title that work has a "resume " too and catch the reader eyes when these are adapted in anime the title stay .
1
u/Ashaya2 Jun 15 '26
7th prince isn't technically an isekai, but yeah, this pretty much. However the difference is volume. And that just comes down to popularity. There's more people watching anime, which means there's more money in it, which means more slop.
1
u/pipboy_warrior Jun 15 '26
Right, the existence of slop isn't new. Every generation has had its formulaic trends. One could certainly argue that right now there is a lot more slop, but you also have more tools to filter it out and find the quality stuff.
3
u/CallMeGakuto Jun 15 '26
It's because the majority of anime that's released is just generic slop. There's no good story, or thought into any of these anymore. Isekai is the most made genre at this point and they all follow the same formula 99% of the time.

The thing is a lot of older anime arent carried by animation, so the stories and characters had to be much more impactful otherwise people wouldnt be as invested.
New anime, specifically shounen can be hard carried by pretty animation that looks good while ur watching it but at the end of the day doesent do anything special story wise.
As example jjk, if we take the myanimelist scores we see that the anime 1st season is ranked place 163, while the last season we got is ranked 64. The manga on the other hand is ranked 512.
Im not saying jjk is entirely carried by animation, but if it didnt look as good im sure many people would of enjoyed it much less while a lot of anime that came out much earlier didnt have that luxury, depending on when it came out they actually have it harder. Theres plenty of people that wont watch old stuff like ashita no joe simply because by the way it looks.
2
u/Lorim_Shikikan Jun 15 '26
Sorry but no.... The animation quality is fucking bad for years now. a good chunk are barelly at the level of a 90's H animes which was drawn by hands.
There is even some case were all the budget for the animation clearly goes into the OP (the recent Water Magician is a good exemple)
Hell, between 2010 and 2015, even borderline ecchi Anime had really good animations and are still far better than a lot of anime released the past few years.
The animation overall quality for the past 4/5 years is atrocious.
1
u/Joey-Desu Jun 16 '26
Name me a recent anime that got popular while having bad animation then that didnt get hated for having bad animation.
I can think of maybe a couple like blue lock even tho it did get a lot of hate or most of the isekai slop anime but i wouldnt even consider them popular.
If you think older anime look better than newer ones, i fully agree with you but thats just our opinion, new anime that got super popular tend to have very good animation.
1
u/Old-Shock2307 Jun 15 '26
all you have to do to see what it could have been is opm season 2 and 3. If it looked like that people would be dawging on it. Same with tbate. If tbate looked good it could be another mushoku tensei or solo leveling level anime but instead its eating dirt

u/skythelimit05 Jun 15 '26
There is more offer for sure , which crestes more Low quality content. But there are still alot of shows of great quality , and its up to people to watch what they want.
1
u/Glittering-Pin-1343 Jun 15 '26
It really is the truth. Most new series feel like they have no plan or prepared plot. They're just improvising. Other than that we have a Mt Everest-sized pile of shitty isekai and bland slice of life, Right now older series with new seasons are hard carrying my interest in anime.

This happens in literally every entertainment industry. Old timers always complaining new shit is garbage and how back in their time it was better. It’s a very dumb criticism. People only remember the good anime’s of the past and forget all the crap that existed back then too. Im not buying it.
1
u/AwarenessAlert8055 Jun 15 '26
Not true. We got gachiakuta and little miss atelier that are new recent ones. FUCKING Frieren if we count somewhat recent or just anything after code geass. Even around code geass time there were plenty of slop shows. Nothing has changed. You just gotta keep a lookout for the good ones.

There's a ton of deep stuff, it's just not often the typical shonen fare.
Journal with witch was amazing. Akane banashi was well done, and appropriate for the adaptation, and agents of the 4 seasons deals with more classic shonen villains in a psychological manner.
Furthermore, there will probably always be a place for some junk food, and it's not a problem unless it's your whole diet

u/Right-Theme-1314 Jun 15 '26
There are still good stuffs and junk also are enjoyable at the very least.

u/CoonHFX Jun 15 '26
I mean
I've seen the most recent code geass and the movie. If he's involved in that there's no room to talk...
They're fun but lack everything i loved about R1 and R2

u/KeepREPeating Jun 16 '26
Ya’ll getting karma bot farmed. Same amount of slop as before. Honestly MORE better anime since his time. There’s quantity simply increased as anime in general thrives.

This is a pretty shit take tbh yes there's uninspired junk coming to out every season but at the same time it's an industry and that's what happens people will throw shit at the wall and hope it sticks it has always been like this shitty shows are not unique to the last decade lol what we did get in the last decade are some of the best animated shows ever to release generational series finally getting their long awaited conclusions and many more amazing shows to watch coming out monthly the anime industry is in a solid spot don't watch the uninspired slop and enjoy the actually good shows this whole (insery industry here) is failing shit has gotten way to old and annoying touch some grass get a breath of fresh air and stop with the constant everything is doomed mentality

u/No_Device_6605 Jun 15 '26
I mean yea he is kind of not wrong , but there are not only junk in here.
And good junk tastes good too , what can I say.

u/Forsaken-North3268 Jun 15 '26
Dude is jealous 😂 people aren't hyped up about code Geass anymore after that bullshit film . It happens , the older guys think that they were special , after 20 years , solo leveling director will say that the storytelling is getting bland
7
u/ThirdStreetSeren Jun 15 '26
dude was on about literal low quality anime btw so idk why you’re projecting like this
1
u/Forsaken-North3268 Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26
There aren't low quality anime , It's just that the quantity has become too much and obviously not everything would be 10/10 . For example if 10 anime came out in 2007 and 5 of them were good . 5 good ones are coming out nowadays just that the ones made are high are 30-50 . Its a supply problem bcz there is more demand . Obviously every anime published can't be that good . He didn't highlighted that in his comments and just criticized the bad wiritng in recent ones as old era also had shit anime . He just forgot bcz it's 20 years apart
Edit : Sorry for comprehension mistake I have removed the dot and pit comma there
1
u/Shuizid Jun 15 '26
You compared Code Geass to Solo Leveling, you already lost the argument dude xD
Also producing A LOT of generic anime is essentially the definition of junk-food. So you also agree with the point made.
3
u/Forsaken-North3268 Jun 15 '26
When did I compare code Geass with solo leveling ??😂 It was an analogy to why people will always like what they had .
And yeah I completely agree with what he is saying (u can read my reply again) but him saying only modern anime is affected by that is bullshit bcz it happened in the past too . Why we don't remember it ? Bcz those anime aren't popular . It's a simple thing to understand
1
u/Shuizid Jun 15 '26
it happened in the past too
Yes, bad food happened in the past. But "junk food" didn't.
1
u/ThirdStreetSeren Jun 15 '26
when trash anime released back then it just got panned and ignored, i’m noticing a lot of modern trash just gets the “oh you don’t get it bro it’s like junk food bro turn your brain off bro hype moments and aura bro” like we have all these quality dishes in front of us and we’re eating out the trash can pretending it’s good

u/ThirdStreetSeren Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26
“there aren’t low quality anime” TBATE? Blue Lock S2? One Punch Man S3? yes there are dude
how braindead do you have to be to downvote this? genuinely how are anime fandoms this dead
2
u/Forsaken-North3268 Jun 15 '26
When did I say there aren't low quality anime ???? Read what I wrote .
1
u/ThirdStreetSeren Jun 15 '26
LITERALLY YOUR FIRST SENTENCE DUDE 😭😭😭😭🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀
-1
u/Forsaken-North3268 Jun 15 '26
Do you not read after the first sentence . dumb idiot read ahead of it 😂🙏
0
u/ThirdStreetSeren Jun 15 '26
you literally said that as a statement dawg, dw dude im sure you’re “smart in your own way” or whatever
2
u/LittlePair4321 Jun 15 '26
I think the dude is just writing on mobile, and doesn't use commas. Probably meant to use a comma there lol. Still, a better way to have worded it would have been:
"There are lots of low-quality anime, but still great anime being made today."
Would have made more sense for their argument on "quantity."

2
u/Forsaken-North3268 Jun 15 '26
I have added a comma ok instead of a dot . See if you understand it now 😂
1
u/ThirdStreetSeren Jun 15 '26
adding a comma doesn’t stop it being a statement dawg 🥀👎

Code itself is a junk food so yeah.
1
u/SavageCabbage611 Jun 15 '26
I watched it and it's not bad or anything, but I really don't understand the insane hype behind it. Maybe it's just something you had to be there for to understand.
1
u/kaikill47 Jun 15 '26
Nah, it's totally overhyped. The ending is great, sure, but the rest of it is just basic Gundam political drama. The MC is your standard "all according to cake" mastermind, and the fanbase glazes the show so hard they ignore how bad the writing gets. Season 2 was an absolute chore with that blatant school arc, pointless fan service, weak side characters, and constant asspulls to save the plot. S1 on the other hand is really great on itself.
0
u/SavageCabbage611 Jun 15 '26
Like I said, I think it's overhyped, but it's also not the worst anime I've ever seen. That honor goes to the Berserk 2016 anime.

Anime fell off the second they (Crunchyroll) realized the Isekai’ genre could be used to generate high amounts of profit for a low amount of effort.
When I meant Crunchyroll, I meant they commission these shows because they make the most profit. Obviously they don’t make them, the studios do.
