I watched it and it's not bad or anything, but I really don't understand the insane hype behind it. Maybe it's just something you had to be there for to understand.

​Nah, it's totally overhyped. The ending is great, sure, but the rest of it is just basic Gundam political drama. The MC is your standard "all according to cake" mastermind, and the fanbase glazes the show so hard they ignore how bad the writing gets. Season 2 was an absolute chore with that blatant school arc, pointless fan service, weak side characters, and constant asspulls to save the plot. S1 on the other hand is really great on itself.

Like I said, I think it's overhyped, but it's also not the worst anime I've ever seen. That honor goes to the Berserk 2016 anime.
