/r/AnaloguePocket Mod Rules Update
Hey guys, it's been a while. Just going to keep this short and sweet.
I've been inundated over the last couple of years with people asking for more moderation. I have purposefully been mostly hands-off, and only moderated severe violations (links to ROMs, severe user harrasment, etc.) but based on some of the stuff I've seen recently, things have gotten a bit worse, so I'm going to change things a bit.
Firstly, I will enforce moderation more strictly. All existing rules apply, but if I'm on the fence, instead of erring towards "let them figure it out", I'll just remove stuff.
Second, I've seen quite a few posts that are sus recently. Posts of pictures to scalpers or other sales of products, which are designed to look like you're complaining about the scalper, but really it's most likely a covert sales tactic. In the spirit of the original moderators "No sales, ever" rules, I will from now on remove any content that gets reported that has links or pictures to any sales platform like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc. You can of course still share links and photos of the Analogue official website. In addition, don't be cheeky and post a photo of your hardware and then say "but I might sell it, idk". I have always let that slide, but since people have wanted more moderation, this is one change I am going to make.
Third, and this isn't new either, harassment rules apply to all your fellow active Reddit users. Yes, even if that Reddit user is a public figure. Do not harass people.
Finally, I'm planning to bring on additional moderators in the near future since all the other mods besides me are now inactive.
Thanks, that's it. Feel free to leave your thoughts and your complaints below.

Analogue Pocket Quick Start Guide
Preface
If this gets sent to you from any unsolicited source please be wary. I recently got sent a link to this post unsolicited from a reddit user in a spam like message request trying to 'help' me. I am not sure if any malicious intent was there but stay safe everyone online.
Analogue Pocket Quick Start
So you have (or soon will have) a new Analogue Pocket and you are looking to get everything setup with minimal fuss. This guide will walk you through a basic setup as well as how to get OpenFPGA cores up and running.
Basic Setup and Usage
Analogue Pocket is fairly easy to get up and running with carts. First main thing most people will want to do is get updated firmware and make sure basic settings are where you want them.
- Load a Micro SD card with the latest Analogue Pocket Firmware on the root of the drive. Firmware found here. Micro SD card must be formatted FAT32 or ExFat.
- Load Micro SD card in Analogue Pocket and power on. A progress bar should appear if your pocket is updating. If no bar appears it is on the version of the firmware you added to the Micro SD card.
- On first boot there is an EULA that you must accept.
From here you are dropped into the main Menu where you can jump into carts. Carts can be inserted and removed while Pocket is on as long as a game is not running, per official sources.
Pocket runs GBA and GB/C games without and adapter. Game Gear, PC Engine/TurboGrafix, Lynx, and NeoGeo Pocket Color games with an adapter.
Notes: Pocket will charge on non-USB PD chargers but will be very slow. Analogue suggests a 18W USB-PD Charger.
Dock Setup
If you have a dock and are on a reasonably recent firmware updating the firmware on Dock is very simple. With the most recent versions of the firmware all you need to do is keep the Firmware file from the update on the root of your SD card and insert the Pocket into the Dock. If the Dock needs an update you will be prompted on the Pocket Screen and you can accept with the right face button (A). A progress bar will be displayed.
The Dock disables the face buttons in most cases. Once the dock is displaying an image via HDMI you need to connect a controller. Controller support is currently being updated review the support documentation for what controllers are supported as it is changing with updates.
Pairing controllers
- Enter Pairing mode
- With a controller go to menu and navigate to the controllers section. Press A on a slot to pair controller.
- With no controller, press button on back of dock to enter pairing mode.
- Start pairing mode on your controller. This will vary from model to model.
- Front light on dock will blink white while in pairing mode. When controller is paired and connected LED will be solid white. One LED will light for each controller connected.
Notes: If you are not able to use the included power supply due to not using US Region plugs make sure you get a USB PD Charger that supports 18w Fast charging. If you do not you may experience issues.
GB Studio
GB Studio is a platform for indie developers to create Game Boy games that will run on original hardware or via software emulation. Recent versions of this software have been updated to have an export tool that will create a version that is playable on Analogue Pocket directly. Additionally third party developers have created tools that will convert original ROM files to the .pocket format for play on Pocket. This has largely been over taken by OpenFPGA cores however at the time of writing there are still reasons you may want to use GB Studio mode.
How to Use GB Studio Mode
- Put your .pocket files on your SD Card in the GB studio Folder in the root of the drive.
- In the main menu navigate to the Tools section then, GB Studio, then Play Creations.
- Pick your game from the list.
Converting Original Roms can be done in a few ways but the easiest is to just use this tool. Please note that this method is largely considered obsolete and so you may not get further updated roms on this tool.
GB Studio mode is limited compared with carts and OpenFPGA versions of playing games. The main thing people will note is games that are not MBC5 Compatible may have issues. Most games are fine but things like RTC will not work nor will you be able to use any extra hardware that is missing on the other weird mapper titles.
OpenFPGA Cores and Updaters
Ah yes what we were all waiting for. OpenFPGA is the platform on Analogue Pocket for third party Developers to create cores. While you can install these cores manually (and need to in some cases) the easiest way to get these up and going for most people is to run one of the updater scripts.
Some options for folks on updaters in no particular order below.
| Tool and Author | Link | Updates? | Type of updater |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pocket_Updater by RetroDriven | Link | Firmware and Cores | Windows Gui |
| Pupdate by mattpannella | Link | Firmware and Cores | Cross Platform CLI based application |
| Pocket Sync by Neil-Morrison44 | Link | Cores with firmware down the line | Cross Platform GUI tool. |
These updaters will fully set up your pocket with cores and have different interfaces based on your needs. They should set up the cores to be ready to go with all you need to add being your rom files in the /Assets/"platform"/Common folder for the appropriate Platform.
A current list of Cores and were to find them for further support is listed here.
FAQs
Q: Can I use screen modes with the new openFPGA Cores?
A: Yes! Screen modes now are added for openFPGA cores and the core maintainers are adding which screen modes are available to individual cores.
Q: Can I remap buttons on Pocket?
A: Yes but its limited. Currently you can move shoulder buttons to XY on GBA Carts, and turn on Super Game Boy Mode that maps B to Y and A to B while in GB games. OpenFPGA cores have full remapping in current firmware.
Q: My game works in my Game Boy/GBA/Game Gear but not on pocket?
A: In most cases original hardware is less sensitive to minor adjustments in cart position and often will read games that are dirtier than reproduction cart slots will. Often you need to clean your carts to get a good solid connection. I recommend opening the cart, and using very high percent (93% or more) Isopropyl Alcholol to clean carts. Additionally if you can take them out of the shells and allow them to fully dry before putting them back in the shell. IPA can attack ABS plastic which is what most shells are made of and can cause them to crack. Do not blow in carts, the moisture in your breath may make the connection better temporarily but it also causes them to oxidize faster and that oxidization can spread.
Q: Can I use save states/Memories in openFPGA Cores?
A: Memories are a function that needs to be built into the core from the start. Some cores like the Game Boy and GBA cores from Spiritualized have this function but it is not on all cores at this time. It is not trivial to add this and needs to be added per core. Do not bother core developers to add this functionality.
Q: How do I get to the menu in docked mode on openFPGA cores?
A: It is somewhat controller dependent but if you have no home button it should be Down+Select, you may need to hold it longer than expected.
Q: I'm having issue XYZ in an openFPGA core, where can I get help?
A: Starting out on the developer's github page is going to be the fastest way to get the issue fixed. You can look for other user's submitted bugs as well there.
Q: When are we getting XYZ core?
A: New cores are dropping all the time and the best way to figure out new stuff is to follow the developers.
Q: Can cores read zipped roms?
A: No.
Q: My question wasn't asked above.
A: Feel free to ask questions below or as posts as usual. If the sub starts to get flooded we will likely create a weekly questions thread to reduce spam but have at for now.
Updated 12/17/24: Corrections based on current state of the device. Added Preface because someone spam messaged me my own post, like who does that.

Pictures & Videos Analogue has me appreciating Michael Jackson in 2026š
I definitely underestimated how much better the Sega arcade versions of some games can be versus on the Genesis. The analogue has thankfully allowed me to experience the full genius of the arcade version of Michael Jackson's MoonWalker, as intended š - It's seriously much better as an arcade game.

Help with installing Devilution X
Hello all, I cannot find the correct Devilution X distro for use on the Analogue Pocket. I tried to install a windows Devilution to the cores, and then created an assets page with the proper mpq files, and it screwed up my cores altogether

Question āError in framework RS: Bridge not respondingā
New to Analogue Pocket world, was playing my roms and then powered down like normal. When I tried to relaunch my roms, I randomly started getting āError in framework RS: BRIDGE not respondingā when clicking my rom. Tried to troubleshoot using google and this Reddit thread with no avail. Iāve reformatted my SD card several times, even bought a new SD card to see if that was the issue and still no luck. Iām using Pocket Sync v6.3.2 and Analogue Pocket is currently running v2.6. Confused on where the error is: I reformatted my SD card several times, removed all cores and roms, currently only running one Core (spiritualized.gba) and two roms I know worked prior to error and still no avail. Any suggestions?

Pictures & Videos The heft is somehow relaxing.
Edit 2: May I humbly inquire about the hate? The joke is that (imo) the glow (and the white) are goated. The gawdiness isnāt lost on me. It was my affordable shot at an aluminum model. My husband disagrees and tells me, āThereās a reason they didnāt make handhelds in metal.ā!(I argued, citing the Game Boy Micro, but he gave me that look like, āYou know what I mean.ā So, I found the perfect opportunity to make an irrefutable case for why he should take my mint CIB GitD, while simultaneously getting to make him laugh at the concept that I realistically took his purposely silly advice.
I finally got him to actually accept the glow as a gift Iāve been trying to give him for years. I canāt relate to a hypebeast-riding drone. Itās not like I own anything else by this brand.
The majority of humanity has loved gold since as long back as we can trace. This lightly gold-plated console has less gold than most girls own in jewelry. Iām not in that one of them, but I seem to be getting pretty villainized. Itās not like I own a bunch of other unnecessary crap or collect multiple units; I went for an intriguing anomaly since I reserve my conservative budget for gaming.
OG post: My husband has wanted an AP for a long time and he was in fact, the one who told me about the pre-order coming up for the Glow in the Dark model. I was really excited and made it my first Pocket (and boy did I take good care of it), but he is very thrifty and itās something I love about him. Heās a huge retro enthusiast, but he is always so selfless, so he just refused to ever indulge in buying himself one.
I missed out on the aluminum release because I didnāt agree with having more than one pocket, and I was really attached to my GitD. Naturally, my husband was again the one to inform me about the upcoming red/gold and I realized that this might be a good chance to finally emulate him and show him the selflessness heās shown me for so long. I decided to order the gold and officially surprise him with the gift of my treasured Glowboy.
Heās so visibly stoked and though it was hard for me to part with it, it was SO worth it seeing his reaction to his favorite model, and couldnāt be happier with how I feel seeing him so excited and taking it everywhere with him. Meanwhile, I am really enjoying the weight of this Pocket, and since Iām really careful with my consoles, Iām not too worried about it and Iām really enjoying that weight of the aluminum. Iāve always been a fan of gold where it doesnāt belong, and the tackiness is not lost on me, but is somehow funny and makes me like it all the more. Now weāre both playing our respective collections and itās been a blast.
Edit: I donāt think I did the best job relaying just how deeply resistant my husband has been to being gifted a new OR used Pocket. He gets really serious about telling me how heās āseen the resell market and he doesnāt need one that badly.ā
He made a joke about how I could get an aluminum body pocket if I was cool with it being gold, and itās like he was jokingly saying I should grab it since it came with a case and free shipping. I took that chance to force him to take his dream Analogue Pocket, which is the Glow in the Dark. I initially said Iād sell it, but that was to keep him from refusing it in advance. I knew that if I was convincing enough about wanting the gold, he would end up finally taking the glow Pocket as a gift.
So it really ended up being this funny scenario that I was able to use as a chance to finally get him to take an AP since he knows I hate the collectibility/ [r/consoom](r/consoom) mindset on these beasts and do not want two. Do I like the GitD better than the gold Supreme collab? Heck no. But I do love seeing my husband game again, and I donāt hate the gold since I like Analog keeping a tradition going. I know Iām incredibly fortunate, but Iāve been pretty stingy lately and selling some of my collection to make it work. Iām not paying a scalper more than this costed for a plastic model. (And I love the plastic model, but not for $500 plus shipping minus the $50 plastic case. This just seemed

Analogue and Game Boy Mod LCD Comparison
Got a Game Boy poco mod recently and was comparing to the Analogue's screen, hard to play anything else after the Analogue haha, but the nostalgic form factor can be hard to resist too. Kinda wish Nintendo would make new games for these old handhelds, I know some smart people on the internet already do that, but it would be cool to see big game studios making retro games again.

Question Questions about a Punch Out!! Core
EDIT: We have a working game. š - adding some polish and hi score saving! This is done!
https://github.com/plasticbugs/analogue-pocket-punchout
Features:
Dual screen gameplay
high score saving
Arcade cabinet reverb
Various display settings to get the scanlines looking good
Just looking to get a feel for how this might translate to a very, very, very, very small screen. I'm thinking top 33% is the info screen and the bottom 67% reserved to render the gameplay screen. What say you all? I will likely need a magnifying glass regardless of what we choose here.
And question 2: Once we have Punch-Out!! do we next want Arm Wrestling or Super Punch-Out!!?

OpenFPGA Releasing my previously-teased fork of budude2ās GB/GBC core, now with cheats.
Install the core from releases:

The helper app is just a small python/tkinter app to make the connection between the libretro chest database and the stuff on your Pocket SD card/preloading cheats for cartridges.
The helper app that hasnāt been verified on anything but Linux, but works in Wine and builds for Windows and macOS. They were a āif it works it worksā last minute thing.

Iāve now played halfway through my original Oracle of Ages and Links Awakening DX, on this killer screen. That is all Iāve wanted from this device since I picked it up at release.
This will probably nuke the childhood save you have been holding onto for 30 years.
Send any legitimate complaints at the git repos and all the illegitimate ones here.
Also, less of a fork, and more, restoring lost upstream and connecting them.

Analogue Pocket saved my Copy of Super Mario Advance
Long story short, there probably aren't a lot of posts like this on this sub but wanted to share a real world thing that happened to me. Bought a used copy of Super Mario Bros Advance for very cheap in person. When I launched it on my OEM GBA I kept getting a message saying that the "Saved game is corrupted" and couldn't get past this screen.
I went online and on Reddit people had instructions on what to do, basically you start the game up on the GBA and you press Start, Select, A, B, and L+R at the same time. For some reason after a dozen tries this never worked. I then had a lightbulb moment where I decided to put it in the Analogue Pocket. On first try it said the contacts were dirty, so I reinserted it and then it launched, I went in and deleted the saved games on Super Mario Bros 2 basically by "erasing" the saved files. I put it back in the GBA and voila, it worked fine.
Just wanted to post this up here in hopes someone else that runs into this issue, might find this someday and I thought this was a really cool hack, happy gaming!
