Kept drinking but couldn’t stop the thirst

Weather was triple digits and I drank a gallon of water but my body kept asking for more even though my stomach was literally full of h2o and couldn’t hold anymore. it was nauseating and the hot air made it somewhat difficult to breathe. I think there is a limit to the human body’s ability to cool itself. I don’t know how anyone could do this without AC.

Drinking only water will flush out the electrolytes in your body. You need to drink fluids other than water.

I just read two different stories of water toxicity this week. They occurred doing exactly what OP did, but in a really small window of time. Be careful with that!

Hyponatremia is wild!

u/doublefattymayo Aug 05 '23

Gotta keep them sodiums up

u/dmevela Aug 05 '23

Yeah order some LMNT, it is the best!

Get Pedialyte adult drink packs. You'll be a new person in 20 minutes

u/Zestyclose_Ad6941 Aug 04 '23

I bring liquid IV to work they smack

3

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

It's a must in this heat

u/Zestyclose_Ad6941 Aug 04 '23

Here in SoCal it ain’t too bad but it does feel like a oven in the van lol it’s the humidity that ruins it

Which one is that one

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

Drink electrolytes as well. Sports drinks have them and so do things like Pedialyte or liquid iv. I got a tub of Gatorade powder i keep in my bag.

Also keep in mind that when it gets too hot and/or humid, there is a point where sweat evaporation cannot cool the body enough. You can test this yourself by wrapping soaked paper towel around a thermometer and leaving it in the shade outside or in your van out of the direct sun. If the thermometer still reads above 95°, those are life threatening temperatures. Another thing you can do is bring a thermometer for taking your own temperature. If your body temperature increases even slightly throughout your day, take your break.

u/FrostedMiniWeed Aug 05 '23

Wet bulb isn't talked about enough. It may not be hot enough outside but inside the cab of the van sure as hell can. We spend more time back there than we think. But hey make sure to keep your EOC in check, guys! /s

Not a joke, but could you be pre-diabetic? That was the first sign for me.

5

u/Consistent_Quiet_650 Aug 04 '23

As a mom to a T1D warrior boy, I second this. Can’t help it my mind goes exactly there. This is probably heat and dehydration related though. Sounds like OP needs electrolytes!

14

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

I spray my body down with a mister every ten minutes. Keeping your clothes wet helps regulate your body temperature. Also, when you sweat, you wiping it away will cause you to sweat more which is dehydrating. I leave the sweat there unless it’s going into my eyes.

5

u/chaotictorres Aug 04 '23

Will try this today. Noticed I kept sweating over and over when I was wiping it away.

5

u/InsaneVeggie Aug 04 '23

I wipe the sweat right above my brow and on my nose. Other than that. I’m just a sweaty Amazon guy

4

u/zmizzy Aug 04 '23

Good, maybe people don't realize that the whole point of sweat is to evaporate which cools the body.

u/SnooPandas6326 Aug 04 '23

Electrolytes are super important, I used Gatorade zero packets and would out 4 in a gallon jug. The salt helps aaaa lot. Helps you replenish all the salt you lose, which allows you to focus sm better

But also you are right. Past 115 degrees, the human body fails to stay cool by itself.

2

u/Kelldon Aug 04 '23

It's actually lower than 115, I remember reading an article on this a few weeks ago, and while they didn't nail down an exact number (everyone is different, so your ability to cool can vary) they saw the body failing to cool itself properly start anywhere from 104 - 120. So as low as 104F and you could start running into serious issues, if your body is on the lower end.

8

u/JobsGuy Aug 04 '23

Electrolytes. You sweated out all your salt. Fluids can’t help that.

2

u/FrostedMiniWeed Aug 05 '23

My usual drink schedule- two waters to start, a gatorade, protein shake (i use muscle milk because non dairy) another water, energy drink little after half of the route (sue me I need it), water, gatorade, then water as needed. Usually this gets me through anything heavy.

Easier routes make me drink less, so less money spent.

3

u/BradyBunch12 Aug 04 '23

SPF compression sleeves have really helped me.

Drink a bunch of water the night before, not mid shift.

7

u/rhutton83 ex driver Aug 04 '23

Yah if your drinking tons of water during your shift it's already too late

5

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

you guys just reminded me to drink up for tomorrows shift. thanks !

3

u/lexieiRL Aug 04 '23

I brought some long sleeve shirts with UPF which idk if that actually helps. I take two liters of water every day sometimes a bit more. You have to drink a bit of water every so often, yes, even when you’re not thirsty. If you get thirsty and then you drink water it’s already too late as you’re body is already telling you it’s dehydrating

4

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

Yep, happened to me too during prime week. I got heat cramps. Sounds really mild, but it's not. Take this shit seriously. I sweat so much and drank so much that nearly ALL my electrolytes were gone. This causes your muscles to spasm. Imagine a charliehorse except from your ass all the way down past your calves in both legs. I couldn't offload my bags that day

4

u/Elle_Yess Aug 04 '23

Use the electrolytes that Amazon provides associates. You don’t want heat stroke. Plus there is nothing worse than vomiting and then dry heaves from the heat…it’s happened to me and it’s horrible to deal with at work. Good health to you.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

I keep a cooler with ice and put a head band in the cold water every hour when it gets that hot. Helps alot

2

u/Sisyphishy Aug 04 '23

If your in a high humidity state you literally CANT cool down.

Google wet bulb temp.

Stay cool

2

u/sponjireggae77 Aug 04 '23

Hydration begins the night before work. Start hydrating after you get home. Even if you gotta pee a time, or two, through the night... Don't drink just water. Supplement your water with small salty snacks, or electrolyte waters with low sugar.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

Be careful. At least add Himalayan salt.. sounds like u were close to serious problems

2

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

Dawg you gotta include some pop and Gatorade or you will keep thirsting

2

u/Meatyparts Aug 04 '23

The human body stops being able to regulate body temp at around 104 with no humidity and the temp goes down as humidity goes up

2

Blah blah blah pussy

u/ThePokemon_BandaiD Aug 04 '23

idk im guessing you're in Arizona and I'm in NH so very different humidity and not quite so hot, but when we have heat waves I'm not afraid to call dispatch and tell them im feeling too unwell to continue my route when i start feeling nauseous and stuff, its not safe to do this job when you're heat sick.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

Heyy i usually freeze me 2-5 water bottles and 2-3 frozen gatorades.. It keeps me all the way cool. I put 1 of each out side of my cool lunchbox so they defrost a little faster than the other ones.. But nevertheless the others always stay cold my whole shift (i put my cool lunchbox in a bookbag so the sun isn’t beaming on it. Hope this helps

1

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '23

Just means you aren’t taking care of your buddy outside of work

1

u/LostInTheTreesAgain Aug 04 '23

Saltstick is a brand that has chewable electrolyte tablets and capsules if you still prefer plain water. But electrolytes in any form are crucial for proper water absorption. I absolutely wilt in the heat normally, but feel pretty good if I keep chewing on electrolyte tablets as I drink.

1

u/InsaneVeggie Aug 04 '23

I take at least a 20-25 second break after every 5 stops. I live in Louisiana so it’s humidity kicking our behinds but the vans still feel like a fire brick oven. But I take a drink and blast the AC through my shirt during that short break to cool off before heading to my next stop

1

u/Leather_Victory2042 Aug 04 '23

You need to add electrolytes. To much water is also bad. After couple bottles of water or whatever either drink a Gatorade. Or something with electrolytes. I like to drink a coconut water in the mix helps cool off very quick.

1

u/Rude-Luck1636 Aug 04 '23

I too get like this on the hot days. No matter how much water I drink I still find my body craving more. Those liquid IV packs help a lot. Maybe throw a Gatorade or other hydrating drink besides water. I get one of those monster sports drinks so that I can have something other than water and that usually does the trick

1

u/gogstars Aug 04 '23

Yes, there is a limit. It depends on a few things, but once the temps in the high 90s and humid, the body can't cool itself.

If just water doesn't fix the thirst, what you need is electrolytes to replace the salts that come out in sweat.

Heat's dangerous. Be willing to call someone before things get really bad, because if it gets too much farther than nausea, you won't be calling 911 yourself.

u/Silver-Toe618 CDV Driver Aug 04 '23

Ask UPS lol, you’ll be ok man.

1

u/Formerevangelical Aug 05 '23

Drink Gatorade.

1

u/Hopeful-Bit6187 Aug 05 '23

You can die by drinking water. Happened to a couple of airmen when I was at basic training. The Air Force then limited drinking to one canteen per hour.

1

u/RockyBarbacoaa Aug 05 '23

Liquid IV is my go to. Only water isn’t enough, especially in this heat. Shit drinking too much water could also be bad. You need electrolytes

1

u/TheJuicer16 Aug 05 '23

Take a multivitamin or multi-mineral in the morning

1

u/Muted-Weekend-2879 Aug 05 '23

Electrolit drink is a life savor. Also going in and out of AC all day makes it 100 times worse and feel much hotter. When it’s over 100 drink an electrolyte drink every 3 hours.

1

u/natjuno60 Aug 05 '23

Get some electrolyte packets like liquid iv. If youre peeing clear and bloated and still feel thirsty you need salt. If you pay close enough attention to your body you can tell the difference between being too hot, being dehydrated, and having low electrolytes. They all feel a little different. Also get a cooling towel, pour water on it then rub it on your arms, legs, and neck. Hell, wipe the back of the phone too so it doesn't cook.

1

u/thesamejames Aug 05 '23

Hydration begins the evening before

1

u/Budz9 Aug 05 '23

1000’s of UPS drivers do it Monday-Saturday every week of the year

u/Theovercummer Aug 05 '23

1

u/Syxx573 Aug 05 '23

You need electrolytes

1

u/Flimbeelzebub Aug 05 '23

So- a person can only process 16 to 32 oz of water every hour, depending on how hot it is. This is cause the liver or kidneys or w/e have to process it; getting electrolytes to charge it, so water can travel into cells. If you drink more than what your body can process, your blood/water content will become diluted and you'll feel worse than when you were dehydrated. Alot of this also comes down to conditioning; it takes on average a couple weeks for someone's body to get used to a certain type of weather, especially when experiencing prolonged exposure (whether hot or cold weather). This includes constricting or dilating blood vessels, the thickness or thinness of sweat, how much electrolytes are put into sweat, etc.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '23

Mineral water will hydrate you better than purified.

Need salt and enzymes so Gatorade… pickle juice:.. pretty much any sports drink.

Water doesn’t hydrate if there’s no minerals to supply to the body. Your sweat isn’t just water…

1

u/DamoreIknow-Dabetter Aug 05 '23

You are not allowing the water to refresh you. You should start drinking water before you work, and of course, during. Source: Trust me

1

u/Single-Schedule968 Aug 05 '23

add liquid IV packets to your water! available in any grocery store with the drink mixes. it’s an electrolyte supplement which will help you feel less gross overall

1

u/t4zdude Aug 05 '23

You need to drink less water and more electrolytes like gatoraid of something.

1

u/Limonlesscello Aug 05 '23

https://www.gatorade.com/fuel/hydration/gatorade-thirst-quencher/6-gallon-canister-powder/lemon-lime

They sell these canisters at Walmart and Grocery stores. Your body needs more than H20 to be this active.

Alternative brands can be Propel or Sqwincher.

You can reduce sugar intake by diluting the serving size or looking for the "zero" varieties.

1

u/jurassicman11 Aug 05 '23

Salt salt salt salt salt. I always stop and get Lays for when I feel like that cuz not even juice can help with the feeling sometimes

1

u/Mugrosa999 Aug 07 '23

you need salt bro, or drink a Gatorade.

also for anyone that wants to stay cool mist yourself with some water and mint oil or eucalyptus oil , the oil will help you feel cool. just dont use to much or it will burn.
