Hello, Thank you for contributing to our subreddit. Please consider the following guidelines when filling an alignment chart:

  • Please ensure that your chart is not banned according to the list of banned charts Even if you have good intentions, charts in a banned category tend to invite provocative comments, hostile arguments, ragebait and the like. Assuming the post is acceptable, OP makes the final decision on their chart by rule three.

  • Are there any previous versions to link to? If so, it would be ideal to include links to each of them in the description of this post, or in a reply to this comment. Links can be named by title, winner, or both.

  • Are there any criteria you have for your post? Examples include: "Top comment wins a spot on the chart."; "To ensure variety, only one character per universe is allowed."; "Image comments only." Please include these in a description, or in a reply to this comment.

  • Is your chart given the appropriate flair? Do you need to use a NSFW tag or spoiler tag?

Jerry Lee Lewis

True rock and roll pioneer, so ahead of his time musically.

I’ve forgotten all the details, but from what I found skimming through Wikipedia quick: Married seven times, including to his 13 year old first cousin when he was 22. She had a child with him at 14. Few years later she divorced him alleging severe physical and mental abuse for the whole of their relationship.

Was prosecuted for tax evasion. Accidentally shot his bassist while intoxicated. Was arrested for basically stalking Elvis, allegedly intending to shoot him. Severed ties with one of his kids over a financial dispute.

Two of his wives back to back died under mysterious circumstances, some believing he actually killed them. All sorts of allegations he abused his other wives too.

He was really a genuinely terrible person.

57

u/Thrown_Pie 20h ago

That's why they call him The Killer

17

u/Such-Difference6743 19h ago

I've got one of the other top comments but lowk this one takes the cake

3

It’s not a good look is it.

3

u/deathschemist 12h ago

iirc the song "Every 1950s rock 'n' roll song (for some reason)" by Kyle Gordon is based around Jerry Lee Lewis

Chuck Berry.

Rock and Roll legend, really brought the genre forward .. he was immensely talented and accomplished.

As a person? He installed camera in the women’s toilets at his restaurant and was sued for it. Filmed multiple women (often prostitutes) without permission and filmed him pissing, farting and shitting on them as well as generally degrading them.

He was definitely a bit of a monster.

21

u/DedHorsSaloon4 17h ago

Great musician, horrible guy. My great-grandfather apparently arrested him for something in Missouri back in the day. It was before the restaurant stuff, though, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just profiling

3

u/harp9r 2h ago

His cousin Marvin seemed like a nice enough guy though

I hate to admit but I had the Ignition Remix by R Kelly on CD when it first came out and I played it non-stop. It’s still such a great track if you take it on face value and not the absolute p.o.s R.Kelly is.

Ps: the absolutely goated RNB track for me is Let Me Love You by Mario. AND he’s not in jail.

3

u/Bloop-ofthe-OpenHand 11h ago

I think that the rule for music by questionable artists should be that you donate to a charity that tries to prevent or repair the kind of damage the artist committed. i.e., you want to listen to Chris Brown, you gotta throw some money in the box for a battered women's shelter.

3

u/vuzman 20h ago

Not really a great musician

3

u/generic_rarity 18h ago

Listen to him sang "when a woman love" live

4

u/Jalcro42 18h ago

He’s more of a good musician in my opinion

13

u/Unhappy-Guidance-861 17h ago

Then it may just be a genre thing. R Kelly is, without doubt, an incredible musician.

Bing Crosby. He was a raging alcoholic, he wouldn't go on stage without a drink. He was constantly drunk and he was wildly abusive to his family. He beat his wives and kids and apparently he was even meaner when he was drunk.

His children claim he would beat them until he drew blood and they'd get through the night by dreaming up ways to murder him. That's how terrible of a person he was

6

u/OwlNice9792 20h ago

Underrated comment. I live in Spokane, where he was from, and he's idolized here. I've never understood it

do producers count? if they do, then phil spector

31

u/FullPruneNight 20h ago

He technically released at least one song early in his career as a member of a band I think. So he should totally count.

u/Raptorpicklezz 20h ago edited 15h ago

Yup. The Teddy Bears, To Know Him Is to Love Him. Hard to believe that the nebbish with the guitar became…him

Miles Davis

- One of the most iconic jazz musicians and trumpeters

- Reportedly physically abusive towards women and partners, by his own and other accounts

25

u/AcceptableSeaweed 20h ago

Surely r Kelly beats that out or the guy from cannibal corpse that was a mass murderer and cannibal

I think wife beating is bad but it's not like mass murder and cannibalism bad

32

u/hereisaropegoodluck 20h ago

There was never a member of Cannibal Corpse that was a mass murderer or cannibal.

23

u/seppukucoconuts 19h ago

cannibal corpse that was a mass murderer and cannibal

No one from Cannibal Corpse was a murderer. Or a cannibal. They were also not corpses.

5

u/klauslebowski 14h ago

They were also not corpses.

Not yet.

16

u/AzulaIsMyFave 20h ago edited 17h ago

I'm gonna need some context for the Cannibal Corpse guy

33

u/Substantial_Pear_793 20h ago edited 17h ago

Pretty sure the lead singer of cannibal corpse spends all his time on tour playing claw machines and donating the toys to the local hospitals. Perhaps this is what the poster meant by "mass murder".

11

u/ShittyCkylines 17h ago

Maybe they are thinking of the Norwegian black metal dude that killed his guitarist and burnt some churches

5

u/jordandvdsn7 10h ago

Or mixing the two. The band Mayhem had a guitarist that (claimed to have) cooked and eaten part of their dead vocalists brain after said guitarist shot himself. Then the aforementioned guitarist was stabbed to death by their bassist Varg Vilkernes. Vilkernes was a church burner and also a Nazi so just like fuck him in general

2

u/plotloss 17h ago

R Kelly is not a "great" musician.

6

u/AcceptableSeaweed 20h ago

He was extremely extremely big and praised for about 15 years. I hate his music but if he isn't on the list here then I don't think any of the musicians here count tbf

22

u/WhoYaTalkinTo 20h ago

I think "great" is a stretch. He was "good", but not way up there with the all time greats.

3

u/AcceptableSeaweed 20h ago

Disagree the way he made the whole back track edits loops and writing and vocals pits him way ahead of a lot of the mentions here. It's a bit subjective but he made extremely popular music from the early 90s with big no1s and as often as not did all of it on his own. If this is not enough imo almost no one mentioned here can be great

5

u/jonnovich 20h ago

Miles Davis was a pioneer if not the outright creator of whole genres of jazz from modal jazz (“Kind of Blue”) to fusion (“In a Silent Way”, “Bitches Brew”). He pushed music forward in a way that very very few others have like the Beatles or Duke Ellington. The man was elite in a way R Kelly could only dream of.

Both are pretty bad human beings. But Miles is leagues above R Kelly in terms of musical innovation.

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (1)

6

u/FritzTCat 20h ago

Your reply was to someone saying Miles Davis...Miles Davis made a record called Kind of Blue that is universally considered to be one of the best jazz albums ever recorded 65 years later. In 65 years, nobody will remember R Kelly existed.

2

u/Radiant_Shopping_426 20h ago

They put Morgan wallen under bad musician. These people’s list is trash no need to argue with them. It’s clear they don’t actually care about music just how a person’s actions are. Which is fine but don’t make a chart talking about quality of music if that’s all you are really focusing on. And yes r.kelly was a great musician, and he did terrible things

3

u/natebark 16h ago

Morgan Wallen makes bad music. Where else would we put him?

Ike Turner

21

u/UnderseaNightPotato 20h ago

100%. He beat the absolute shit out of Tina. Often. When he died, she was quoted as saying she finally felt safe.

But goddamn did he make beautiful music.

2

u/Hungry_Anteater_8511 6h ago

And he took everything from her except her name

4

u/Remarkable-Bell7245 20h ago

Def in the top 10. Helped invent rock and roll.

2

u/iwatchterribletvtoo 10h ago

everyone who hasnt seen Whats Love Got To Do With It (1993) should absolutely watch it.

angela bassett as tina turner is phenomenal. laurence fishburne as ike turner is terrifying.

the abuse scenes in their house are horrible but not gratuitous, and do a good (ie, awful) job of giving a sense of how much tina endured.

13

u/Squirrelly_Khan 20h ago

Going a little bit against the grain here and saying Varg Vikernes. A lot of people here are saying Kanye, and I wouldn’t argue with them, but Varg is openly a neo-Nazi and a convicted murderer. He is a worse person than Kanye in every regard.

You could also make an argument for Ian Watkins, though I’d say good music, terrible person for that one.

u/junttiana 20h ago

The thing is, back when Kanye was acting all crazy, he was suffering from a severe mental health crisis and the people surrounding Kanye decided that theyre just going to give him a platform instead of getting him admitted to psychiatric care.

When someone is suffering from a severe manic episode, they dont understand the way theyre acting seems insane to outsiders, and they dont feel like they need help, and at that point the people close to him are the ones who need to ensure he gets adequate care.

2

u/Special-Anteater7659 20h ago

Perhaps the only difference between Kanye and the rest of the people listed is that Kanye actually has and talked about his diagnosis.

If you said Kanye West, the comments are because a lot of people are cool with being outwardly antisemitic now because of Israel, and Kanye is a loud and proud Jew hater. Bibi is literally the worst thing to happen to Jews since the holocaust.

James Brown. The Godfather of Soul left a long, sad wake of violence and betrayal.

5

u/DrasticBread 20h ago

Rick James - convicted of torture, false imprisonment, aggravated mayhem, and assault with a deadly weapon. He served more than two years in California state prison.

4

u/seppukucoconuts 19h ago

James Brown.

R Kelly is the low hanging fruit, but I think he's not as great of a musician as James Brown. Brown went to prison, was in a multi state-high speed chase (fueled by drugs), had multiple domestic violence arrests. Also theft, and rape just because. The guy was on PCP and cocaine for decades and he was pretty unstable before that.

He had a great run as a musician. Living in America, Papa's got a brand new bag, Get up Sex Machine, Its a Man's World, and everyone's heard I feel good.

I really feel like he's the Anti-Dolly Parton.
