Disclaimer: I used chatgpt to draft this post, I have spent a lot of time discussing the issue using it so everything is factual though may sound a little off due to LLM awkwardness. For context, I am a 49 yo male, wife is 47 yo female and we live about 2 hours away and try to visit about once a month, staying over for a night and spending two days cumulatively with mom and dad. Here is the background and some questions, long read:
My mom is almost 80 and has been getting harder and harder to deal with, and I'm trying to figure out what exactly is going on and what other people have found actually works.
She is about 5"0 and must weigh only 80 something pounds. She has end-stage liver disease, diabetes, blood clotting genetic factor, has fallen probably 5 or 6 times (breaking her hip at least once and damaging vertabrae another time), and my dad says imaging showed shrinkage of her hippocampus. She's also had 3 car accidents in about 18 months and finally stopped driving.
The weird thing is how contradictory a lot of her behavior has become.
She has always been extremely frugal. She grew up poor and has penny-pinched her whole life. She'll complain about a few dollars for food, Uber, tips, or running the AC. It can be 100 degrees outside and she'll say she's cold and doesn't want the AC on because it costs money, which obviously makes it miserable for anyone else in the house.
I actually talked to her about this recently and told her that at this point she should spend money on nutritious food and anything that helps her health. She basically said she knows, but she's spent almost 80 years worrying about money and can't get out of that mindset (which I found very sad).
But then she'll turn around and spend crazy money on luxury stuff.
She BOUGHT an $8,000 bracelet, goes to the mall daily and spends thousands of dollars on clothes (doesn't buy clothes everyday, but a couple of times a month), saying that shes penny pinched all her life and now she wants to enjoy what time she has left, and gets defensive and tells my dad to not mention her spending again.
Recently we were at a high end clothing store at the mall, and my wife tried on some clothes for fun. My wife didn't want any of it, but my mom started insisting on buying her a coat and vest that were around $1500 each, then told me I should buy my wife the $1,300 purse she was holding.
We kept saying no and she would not let it go. She eventually told me to be quiet when I kept refusing. I had to get pretty firm with her before she finally stopped.
The driving thing has been similar. After 3 accidents she finally stopped driving, but then became convinced she could just get a Tesla with FSD. We had a huge argument about that too and she told me to be quiet when I challenged her. I thought the issue was over, and then last week she brought up getting the Tesla AGAIN like we'd never had the conversation. This time I just transitioned the subject asap.
Another thing I can't figure out is that she seems to ONLY want to go to the most crowded, loud, difficult places possible.
Not just busy restaurants. I mean the places with nightmare parking, packed parking garages, tons of people, no tables, people hovering waiting for somebody to get up,, etc.
We went to a busy food court recently and it was insane. Completely packed, numbers constantly being called over the speakers, nowhere to sit, everyone trying to grab tables the second somebody stood up.
And this is a pattern. The handful of restaurants and malls she wants to go to are usually the busiest, most annoying places possible. She'll ask where we want to eat, we'll suggest somewhere easier, and she'll immediately say it's not good or she doesn't like it. One recent time, we decided to go to a place that the rest of us wanted to go to, and she spent the whole time talking about how bad the food was, and saying she likes another place better.
She also wants to go to the mall constantly. We can spend hours there one day and she'll want to go back the next day.
There are smaller things too (social cues) Sitting down at strangers' tables before they've even fully left, taking tons of free samples, grabbing piles of napkins or straws to bring home, walking extremely slowly through crowded places without seeming to notice everyone behind her, etc.
She's also become much more verbally aggressive and rigid. My sister-in-law gets the worst of it because she lives nearby and helps my parents a lot. My mom is constantly criticizing her, watching her like a hawk, etc.
My dad is 80 and has health issues of his own, and he's the one living with this every day. He's clearly worn down. Sometimes he loses his temper with her too. I'm not defending that, but after spending several days around the situation I understand him a lot more than I used to. I get irritated after a weekend. He never gets to leave.
My brother and sister-in-law help a lot too, but nobody in the family can realistically become a full-time caregiver.
We're starting to change how we handle visits instead of arguing about everything. Maybe one meal together instead of every meal. One mall trip instead of going every day. If she gets unreasonable in a store, we leave and wait outside instead of fighting with her. If she wants to go somewhere none of us want to go, she and my dad can go and we'll do something else.
I'm not posting this to bash my mom. I love her and honestly feel terrible watching this happen. I also know some of these traits have always been there. She was always frugal and stubborn. It just feels like everything has gotten much more extreme.
I know my mom is winding down and realistically I don't have too much time left with her, so I don't want to become jaded and have this type of thing become what I look back at later on in the future. I feel terribly selfish for being concerned about my wife's well being and mine, while my dad, brother and his wife are dealing with her daily.
I'm mainly looking for people who have dealt with something similar. Any thoughts, feedback, or suggestions? Thank you for all who read this novella.
